Review
Jennifer Fulwiler,  radio show host and author of Something Other Than God:
"Steve, your book is really excellent. Even for someone with no science background or who is not a big reader, The Reality of God is a book that is accessible to anyone regardless of their background. As someone who was a lifelong atheist before I converted to Catholicism in my late twenties, I have to say this might be the best single book that goes over the basics of why we believe in God and the scientific and human evidence that God is real. Just excellent stuff. Everyone should get this book. I love it. Honestly, I really think this book is fantastic."
Dr. Jay W. Richards, co-author of The Privileged Planet: "Too many Catholics don't know how to integrate faith with science. The Reality of God shows us an inspiring way forward. Once we separate the real evidence of science from naturalistic philosophy that masquerades as science, we discover compelling evidence from nature for God's existence. From the origin and fine tuning of the universe, to human moral intuition and consciousness, we can agree with St. Paul, here at the beginning of the 21st century, that God's eternal power and divine nature can be clearly perceived in His Creation."

Fr. R. Scott Hurd, author of When Faith Feels Fragile: "Employing his scientific and theological knowledge, as well as his gifts as an author and Catholic of deep faith, Steven Hemler tackles humanity's most pressing question―Does God exist?―with clarity and conviction. In an eminently readable and easily digestible fashion, Hemler demonstrates that faith and reason do not conflict but instead point toward one and the same truth: that God is real. Seekers and students will especially benefit from this fine work."

Brandon Vogt, author of The Church and New Media:"Recent years have seen a slew of books defending the existence of God. Each of those titles are tightly written and brilliantly argued, but they can also be a bit intimidating for people with no background on the subject. But a new book by Steven Hemler, The Reality of God, makes the arguments more palatable. Hemler's stated goal is to help ordinary Christians articulate objective reasons why God exists. In that he succeeds well. Most of the book is breezy and clear, making this an ideal introduction to the arguments for God."

Dr. Jeff Mirus, CatholicCulture.org:"I was glad to see Steven R. Hemler's new book from St. Benedict Press, The Reality of God. Hemler's book explains that the many things we now know about the universe point even more strongly to a Creator than did our more general observations in the past. The book is divided into brief sections, the evidence is explained clearly and concisely, and the author provides discussion questions to help focus on key issues. He has read widely to present this effective summary. The Reality of God is well-suited to the general adult reader and high school education."

Matt Nelson, ReasonableCatholic.com:
"Most Christian apologists today have ordinary day jobs. They are in the world, at arms with a culture of indifference and skepticism, with good books as their primary training grounds. Thus, The Reality Of God is both timely and necessary. In this clear and accessible book, Steven Hemler provides an introductory landscape of scientific and philosophical arguments for the existence of God, supported by up-to-date research and solid reasoning. The Reality of God is yet one more useful book that should be in the hands of every New Evangelist."

The Arlington Catholic Herald:

"The Reality of God: The Layman’s Guide to Scientific Evidence for the Creator by Steven R. Hemler (Saint Benedict Press) is a worthwhile read for any believer who couldn’t find the right responses when confronted by agnostics—or even for cradle Catholics who could use a scientific boost to long-held beliefs. Readers who doubt the existence of God may experience a number of ‘aha’ moments when everything seems to (finally) make sense. Catholics may experience the same thing—or may finish the book with the quiet reassurance of truths already known. Get the book."

Pete Socks , Catholic Book Blogger:
"Author Steven Hemler explores the science that proves the existence of God in his new book The Reality of God: The Layman’s Guide to Scientific Evidence for the Creator. I was always led to believe, through my public school education, that God had little to do with science, yet as I worked my way through this book I came to realize this was completely wrong. Take up this book and read, even if you are like me and science is not your thing, there is much fruit to harvest in this book. Steve Hemler has done the Church a service by providing a book that utilizes science to affirm the existence of God. Well done Steve."

Dr. Matthew Bunson, The Catholic Answer

"Steve Hemler offers a comprehensive but eminently approachable examination and defense of the arguments for the existence of God in The Reality of God. At a time when atheism has achieved a kind of cultural chic, Hemler answers the key questions and accusations used by the enemies of belief to proclaim the absence of God by looking at three different perspectives: Cosmic Evidence, Biological Evidence and Human Evidence. All three categories are immensely detailed and well-reasoned, in particular the effort to demonstrate that the natural sciences do not actually disprove religious belief but actually reveal the existence of a Creator."

This is such a lucid and necessary book!

This is such a lucid and necessary book! Steve Hemler explores three distinct disciplines and their evidence for a creator: space, including laws of nature, biology, including evolution and genetics, and human logic and philosophy. He covers each area thoroughly and convincingly but without overwhelming the reader with jargon. There is enough depth to participate in a debate about the details with someone else, such as a teen, a sibling or a co-worker. For instance, as a physician I have learned the science and I am glad the book describes enough of the concepts that I can have an intelligent conversation with colleagues about the evidence for God in the scientific details. A non-scientist, though, will still understand the arguments and evidence the author presents. You don’t need to be preparing for a debate to enjoy this book. Just reading it for yourself, you will come away with renewed awe and wonder for what our Creator has made for us. God is in the details, and Mr. Hemler's book will reveal or remind you of those details.

As a parent, I am glad he reminds the reader of John Westerhoff's four stages of Christian faith : experienced faith (bells & smells), affiliative faith (connecting in a faith community), searching faith (with which this book will be immensely helpful), and owned faith (with which this book will be immensely re-affirming). My own three teenagers and many of their friends challenge the very ideas that Mr. Hemler covers. He gives a very thorough and convincing explanation of the evidence. Teachers and parents will love this book.

The book is well written and well edited. If you are an informal member of the "Grammar Police," as I am, this book will not leave you irritated by typos and misspellings. All of the i's are dotted and t's are crossed. The book is well referenced, and has a bibliography and index. There is also Kindle edition if you prefer.

After reading all the evidence, I am glad Mr. Hemler ended the book with this quote by Norman Geisler, "God has provided enough evidence in life to convince anyone willing to believe, yet has also left some ambiguity so as to not compel the unwilling." Mr. Hemler adds," ...it is not possible to absolutely prove the existence of God beyond any doubt. A 'leap of faith' is required from each of us."

It just so happens that I chose this book to read on a recent vacation in Arizona. As my children and I looked over the Grand Canyon, my scientific mind was trying to integrate the facts of rock formation and water and soil erosion with the amazing grandeur in front of us. Why would rock and erosion be this beautiful? The obvious explanation is that the creator wanted us to be in awe. This was the evidence that Mr. Hemler writes about. As we stood there among the crowds of people at the Canyon that day, people of all ages, from all over the world, all faiths, all levels of education, I had this realization: not one of the birds, deer, squirrels, much less the trees and rocks are in awe at this site, but every single human there was in awe!

Read this book. Learn or remind yourself of the evidence God has provided to convince you, then take that leap of faith in Him.

God is the master scientist
By Gene P
I've been an engineer since I discovered a screw driver as a toddler almost 70 years ago, and used it to discover how things worked. I've spent retirement discovering how the universe and humans work and how they evolved from absolutely nothing. This has always enhanced my Catholic faith. I discovered that God is the master engineer and scientist and rarely resorts to magic tricks. That seems to be contrary to what we are told in the media and in public schools and colleges, where it is easy and profitable to ridicule religious fundamentalists who rely on faith alone. This book provides a firm lock on the realities of science, and surprising to many, modern Popes agree. It's easy to read, because it follows a lecture outline, yet it gets quite specific when covering DNA, the "language of God" (ref: Francis S. Collins). My only regret is that it missed references to some noteworthy scientists in the clergy, such as Sister Miriam Michael Stimson. The book should be mandatory reading for every parent, and for every teen who was short-changed on parental guidance.

A great read for the believer and non-believer alike!!!
By Kevin Starner
Faith can be a difficult thing, faith in God especially so. As students of a secular society, we are taught to use the Scientific Method to shape our beliefs and perceptions of the world around us. Specifically, we are taught to develop a reasonable hypothesis, and then test that hypothesis to determine how the various natural laws play into it. Rarely does faith play any part in that process. This has the potential to be problematic for those of the Christian faith because it does not allow for that which cannot be seen, proven, or reasonably tested. As a result, such processes can lead to one questioning their faith solely because of its intangible aspects.

Enter Steven Hemler's book, The Reality of God: The Layman's Guide to Scientific Evidence for the Creator. Unusually well written, The Reality of God clearly and concisely presents three worldly types of evidence that boldly proclaim the existence of a divine Creator. Using simple, easy to understand language, the author masterfully tackles the complex Laws of Nature and their universal fine tuning to outline the cosmic evidence for God's existence. Next, the author delves into the biological evidence for God's existence by discussing the fundamental differences that are often portrayed (and highly contested) between Creation and Evolution. With periodic references to scripture, the author rationally explains how these two theories may not be as opposing as is typically presented, and how the concept of Evolutionary Creation or Theistic Evolution seems to fit that which we presently know about the world and its origins. Finally, Mr. Hemler points to the human race, itself, as profound and remarkable proof for the existence of God (whose very image we have been created in). The fact that human beings are conscious creatures, fully knowledgeable of our existence and actions, and that we are all guided by an innate conscience (that internal moral compass) seems to point to a higher spiritual being that intentionally placed the human race above the rest of His divine creation. The author goes on to explain how the godly gift of free will allows each and every one of us to develop a personal relationship with the Lord when and how we see fit. God calls us to love Him, but does not force our hand in the matter. As conscious beings acting through free will in accordance with our internal conscience, the author narratively demonstrates that the human evidence may, in fact, be the most definitive proof for the existence of God.

In reading Mr. Hemler's book, my personal faith in God has been strengthened, and I feel significantly more informed about the truthful evidence for God's existence. This book is a pleasure to read, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about God's Creation, the Genesis Story, and how we fit into it.
