"O, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long!"

At first glance, the title Love Your Bible may strike the casual browser as odd. They may be inclined to think "Of course I love my Bible!" or "Don't all believers love their Bible?" However, in this brief book Gary Neal Hansen brings to life the words of Psalm 119:97 "O, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long!"
While some readers may have heard of lectio divina, others may not be familiar with this ancient practice. Hansen beings with a brief history of lectio divina and its role in Christian history. Of particular interest is the fact that Benedictine monks were required to spend 2 hours a day practicing this discipline and four hours during the winter. As very few of us today have the opportunity to commit that many hours to this practice, Hansen spends the remainder of this book breaking down the steps of lectio divina for today's readers. A single chapter is devoted to each of lectio divina's four parts. Throughout the book Hansen uses examples from Psalm 1:1 to help the reader practice the steps.
Readers will gain much by reading through the entire book once rather quickly to obtain the full breadth of the book and the to become familiar with lectio divina. After this first brief reading, readers can engage in a second slower reading in which they practice this discipline. To obtain the most from this resource, you simply cannot just read the words on the page but must put them into practice. Fortunately, this book is slim enough to keep with your Bible, perhaps tucked into your Bible cover, to refer to often.
At the end of Love Your Bible, Hansen suggests that readers could practice lectio divina on a single verse of the Psalms each day which would take roughly six years. This suggestion may sound ludicrous to our fast paced, speed of light society, yet following this suggestion will profit those who accept it in the long run. This book is a wonderfully accessible introduction to this ancient practice.

St. Matthew records a saying of Jesus, “Therefore every teacher of the law who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old,” (Matt. 13:52). That is what Gary Hansen does in his new book, Love Your Bible. Drawing on the writings of a 12th century monk, Hansen invites his readers to engage with the Bible in a new, though very old, way called lectio divina or ‘divine reading’.
Hansen walks his reader through the four stages of lectio, reading, meditating, praying, and contemplating, with clear direction and helpful examples. Hansen relates how our engagement with Scripture can be more meaningful than strictly academic study while being more grounded and rich than is often the case with purely devotional reading. He doesn’t just repeat what Guigo II, the 12th century author of The Ladder of Monks, had to say, but presents it in clear prose that can be understood by modern readers who don’t have Hansen’s experience in reading ancient texts. Hansen even shows how this ancient practice can be enhanced with 21st century tools available on the Internet.
As with his previous book, Kneeling with Giants, Hansen mines Christian history to provide new and refreshing Christian practices that will enrich your faith and help you mature as a disciple. Love Your Bible is a new treasure pulled out of the ancient storeroom of Christian history. A brief, practical and engaging guide to lectio divina

In “Love Your Bible”, Dr. Gary Hansen continues to provide practical wisdom for experiencing fresh and vital faith today by joyfully introducing us to the best Christian ideas and practices of the past. In this case, we meet the little-known but highly influential Carthusian monk Guigo II, whose teachings about the Biblical study method known as "lectio divina" have helped countless people experience a life-giving encounter with God. As always, Dr. Hansen helps us learn from our fathers and mothers in the faith by writing with clarity, brevity and good cheer. The book reflects careful scholarship, but it is never dull or difficult. Indeed, it gives very practical guidance for Bible study that employs both head and heart as we read, meditate, pray and contemplate the Scriptures. Each step in this process (or, in Guigo’s imagery, each rung in the ladder) is clearly described and further illuminated through stories and examples. I was delighted to receive a free promotional copy of “Love Your Bible” by the author in exchange for an honest review of the book, and I highly recommend it to any individual, small group or class wishing to move closer to Jesus and grow deeper in faith - step by step.
