Matthew L. Becker is an associate professor of theology at Valparaiso University, USA. An ordained Lutheran minister, he is the author of The Self-Giving God and Salvation History (T&T Clark, 2004), the editor of Nineteenth-Century Lutheran Theologians (Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht, 2016) and The Daystar Reader, and a co-editor of God Opens Doors.

Superb, for Christian and critic alike!

This is one of the best researched and lucidly written surveys of Christianity and Christian thought this reviewer has seen in a long, long time. Although I call it a "survey", Professor Becker's work is rich in specific detail with essential information on the history of Christianity and what various Christian groups/denominations have taught through time. It doesn't have to drill deep everywhere in order to drill well and be productive for the inquiring mind. Furthermore, the book engages the reader, both the so-called "believer" and "non-believer" alike, in theological conversation around the fundamental issues when one considers God and wrestles with the most important "God questions." Because of its strong historical foundation, the book "sets the table" for the present. The author's intended primary audiences are college and university students interested in and open to a serious look at the Christian faith from a theological and historical perspective. At the same time, this book should be required reading for even the most seasoned (or jaded) pastor and well-read lifelong layman who wants to sharpen his or her mind and memory. As if these audiences are not enough, critics of religious faith generally and of Christianity in particular may well come up with a reappraisal of that which they criticize.

I purchased two copies, one for my granddaughter who will be studying theology at Valparaiso University and the other for myself. I hope we can communicate on different chapters in the book when she has her class with Dr. Becker. From what I have already read, I find it a great summary of what I have understood and taught over the past 58 years as a Lutheran pastor and theologian. Thank you Dr. Becker
