Revenge Redeemed: A True Story of God's Grace: Includes Study Guide, by Bob Stewart

Does God's command to love your enemy include forgiving the drunk driver who killed your only child?

It’s Christmas Eve, but Frank and Elizabeth Morris have no reason to celebrate. Joy, peace on earth, and good will toward men have been replaced by heartbreak, hatred, and bitterness. Their beloved only child, eighteen-year-old Ted, has just died from injuries sustained in a horrific automobile accident. Days later, they would learn that their son had been killed at the hands of a drunk driver.

The Morrises’ strong Christian faith is shaken to its foundations as grief chokes every bit of hope and joy from their lives. They demand the death penalty for their son’s killer, a young alcoholic named Tommy Pigage. When the charges are reduced from murder to manslaughter, they are outraged by the injustice of it all—and anguished by God’s seeming indifference to their suffering.

Tormented by their inability to “love their enemy”, they continue to stumble through dark days and darker nights. It isn’t until Elizabeth opens up her car door—and her heart—to the troubled young man who killed her son that the light of God’s transforming love begins to seep through the cracks of their broken lives.

Thankful for the Reprint.
By Jerrie W. Barber
I am glad this book has been reprinted and is available in Kindle. I have read the book numerous times and recommended it often. When I teach a Bible class on forgiveness, I ask each person to read Revenge Redeemed. It is the best non-biblical illustration of forgiveness — with all it dynamics — that I have heard. I have watched these families in the decades since 1982 and see that the story continues. The forgiveness and relationship still remain.

Profoundly Moving

It is an exciting story that shows how God can and does turn tragedy into victory. It is a case study of the range of human emotions and how God gives us grace to bear the unbearable.

It may seem like is a story for more mature readers, but I am going to read it with my 6 1/2 year old, and I expect that it will keep her on the edge of her seat as she hears the story unfold through all the twists and turns, knowing that it ends on a very positive note. Romans 8:28 is one of my most frequently referred to Bible verses.

All of us will face heartbreak, but most of us are spared the pain of having to bury our only child, knowing that another person was at fault. Seeing the transformation from hate to love in this story is inspiring and has left me better equipped to forgive and love people who have offended me to far less of a degree.

With God, all things are possible. It isn't always a smooth and easy road, and this story is told in a brutally honest way. I know many other readers have found this book to be as profoundly moving as I have, and I can't recommend it highly enough.

How God Can Turn Sorrow Into Joy
By Beckie
This book was a gift to me from a very close friend. I would never have known about, found, it or read this special story without her decision to give it to me. I think God wanted me to read it, and He made sure my friend put it in front of me. At first I thought it was going to be one of "those" holier-than-thou preachy sort of tales. I was a bajillion times wrong about that.

The subject snatched my attention immediately. It was so sad. A young man's life is finished by another young man the devil has decided to torture with alcohol. Add a car to that, and you have death at the hands of an intoxicated driver. Ted died. His killer, Tommy, lived.

I said Ted's life was finished, didn't I? Actually, it really wasn't. His physical presence vanished, but HE did not. The real Ted, the part of him that mattered the most - his SOUL - was a constant "there-ness" from the beginning of the book until the end. The author skillfully kept my emotions zig-zagging all over the place, and never once did I forget Ted. His mother and father, Frank and Elizabeth, thought of him every second, even in their dreams. This was a poignant reminder that our loved ones don't "really" die. We just can't see them. But we still do things to help us hang on to our loved ones. In Elizabeth's case it was a beach ball that her son, Ted, had blown up. HIS BREATH was inside that ball, and she guarded it in a way only a mother can do.

Like Frank and Elizabeth, I detested Tommy at the start of the book. He seemed dirty and uncaring and just all-round gross. But since I knew this was going to be a story about redemption I gave him the benefit of the doubt because I already knew how this book was going to end. The title alone gives a huge hint as to how everything comes together toward the last page.

I think sometimes we are completely sure...I mean absolutely positive that we will react in a certain way when confronted with a certain thing. I feel if a drunk driver killed my son or daughter there would be no solace anywhere for me. I can imagine how my life would gradually become darker and darker with not so much as a pinpoint of a crack that would let in even a barely-there ray of light. Could I live the rest of my life in mourning? Barring suicide, yes. I would have no choice. And people would tell me to find the silver cloud. Silver cloud in the death of one of my children? SERIOUSLY??

But this book taught me that that sort of almost-impossible forgiveness IS possible. Easy? No. Worth fighting for? Yes. Holding on to blind faith when you have every reason not to. When all you really want to feel is hate and misery. You want to wallow in it. It's not that you enjoy letting the devil have his way with you. You're just resigned to it. You get to the point where you don't even care what the devil does. You don't care about anything anymore.

But you know, God has this way about Him. We have Free Will, yes, but you see, God also gave us a conscience. And conscience is lazy. Lazy as a spoiled cat napping in warm sunlight. Conscience has to be exercised and kept strong in order to keep us from giving the devil too much power. Unfortunately, sometimes we don't keep our consciousnesses in tip top shape. We fail and then are more miserable than ever. Maybe sometimes you have to reach the lowest place of your life - like the molten core of the earth - before you start feeling God's hand on your cheek. You have to reach up and touch that hand, squeeze it, don't let go of it. If you love that hand it will begin to pull you out of the hellish molten core.. And God will probably do it in a way you never would have figured because God likes to do things His own way, and His way is sometimes the exact opposite of what we want. And since we weren't given a reference book containing the alphabetized ways God uses to help us, we think He isn't helping us at all. We are impatient by nature, and we are quick to get mad or cry 24/7, believing our lives are the worst things ever. Sometimes I don't know how in the world God puts up with us.

His helping us to forgive people who have hurt us brings out the best in us. It is hard to forgive. But when we feel ourselves doing it, our reason for cuddling hate in the first place becomes less understandable. It takes the one and only true God to be able to untangle the messes we make and solve several problems simultaneously. We run around in circles like confused little ants trying to fix our troubles when all the while God is right there just waiting for us to notice Him.

Everyone's beliefs are different because each of us is unique. I see God as Abba - Daddy. I've had a dream about Jesus ever since I was a little girl. (And believe me -- I am FAR FAR away from being a little girl!) I am walking down a tree-lined road. It's getting kind of dark, and I'm getting afraid because monsters lurk on this dark road. But just before panic begins to suffocate me I spy a figure in the distance, coming toward me. I begin to run toward it and realize it is a man. I am so relieved to see this man. As I get closer to Him something inside me tells me who He is. So I run as fast as I can. He catches me and, holding me high above His head, He twirls me around and laughs. Then He sits down on the dirt path, and I climb into His lap. His arms go around me. Every time I feel my tears roll down my cheeks I also feel them being absorbed into His robe. I love that dream, and I love that I keep having it year after year, and it is always the same. And I am also that little girl in it rather than the older woman I am now.

It is a great exercise to read about how people fight to keep their faith, to trust God during the worst of times. It's so hard. But so is physical exercise when you first start doling it. Your every muscle screams with pain, but if you want to lose weight and get into shape, you have to keep going to the gym no matter if you like it or not. I like learning which gym other people like go to. It fascinates me that no one thing is going to work for one other person. Everyone finds God in a different way, and that is how it should be because when we understand people better we can help them and love them in God-like ways.

REVENGE REDEEMED is a must read for those people who love a true story that ends with God finding and bringing home another lost lamb.

Highly recommended.
