About the Author
Charles H. Kraft is retired from the faculty of the School of Intercultural Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary after 40 years as Professor of Anthropology and Intercultural Communication. He holds degrees from Wheaton College, Ashland Theological Seminary, and Hartford Seminary Foundation. He is also an internationally renowned speaker and president of Deep Healing Ministries, which focuses on deep-level healing, deliverance and spiritual warfare. He and his wife, Meg, live in Pasadena, California.

Plea to Pay More Attention to Spiritual Warfare

Compared to the charismatics and Pentecostals, evangelicals have generally shunned "spiritual power issues" for fear of emotionalism and fear of going overboard with tongues, prophecy and other charismatic gifts. According to well known anthropologist and linguist, Charles Kraft, our Western worldview constitutes a major hindrance to an evangelical's understanding of spiritual warfare. He also laments how evangelicals stop short of venturing boldly into the spiritual domain. Like a puzzle of 300 pieces, evangelicals generally use 200 pieces with the first hundred about the physical world and the second hundred about human activities. The third hundred, which is about spiritual activities and warfare tends to be relatively ignored. This is quite reflective of a Christian's understanding of the Trinity as well. Much has been written and talked about with regards to God the Father and God the Son. Relatively little has been written about God the Holy Spirit. In the same way, evangelicals generally talk or teach little about spiritual battles and warfare. This book is meant to guide evangelicals on the importance of this matter, to highlight the myths as well as pointing out the biblical perspective that spiritual warfare is real.

Since the 80s, Kraft has been engaged in works of inner healing and more recently spiritual warfare. Sensing a greater openness from evangelicals about the reality of spiritual warfare, Kraft has written this book to describe his concern for the general apathy of Christians toward spiritual warfare. He lists eight reasons why one ought to take spiritual warfare seriously.

1) The Bible speaks of demons which means our Enlightenment approach to Christian spirituality is grossly limited.
2) There Contexts of conflict in the Bible
3) Jesus models healing and deliverance
4) Jesus would do the same today
5) Our Church leaders must learn spiritual warfare
6) Evangelicals must not over-react against the excesses of Pentecostal/Charismatic spirituality
7) Our traditions and institutions need to outgrow fear
8) Demons outside are secondary compared to the issues inside us.

Designed in five parts, Kraft begins with an introduction that makes the case for evangelicals to take spiritual warfare more seriously. Part Two is about changing one's worldview toward a fuller Christianity that includes spiritual warfare. In terms of worldview, Part Three teaches us to move away from an either/or perspective toward a dual causality, both/and: Physical AND Spiritual. In terms of evangelical Christianity, we are urged to move to a "Threefold Christianity" that comprises Truth, Relationships, and Power. Part Four and Five go on an offensive with tips on how to launch a ground as well as a cosmic level spiritual warfare. He deals with eight controversies in ground level assaults. He mentions three types of ground-level spirits to be aware of: Family, Occult, and Ordinary.

Kraft makes several potentially controversial statements. He makes a case for animism as a way God can use for good. While it is true that the West has over-secularized spiritual matters, it is equally possible that one can over-extend the other direction to give credibility to pagan practices. In pointing out the problems of Westerners, Kraft talks relatively little on the unique problems of non-Westerners in their cultures.

There are many points Kraft have and readers will see numbers conveniently placed to guide. For me, after the first few chapters of "eight issues" in spiritual warfare; "twelve truths of who we are," "three hindrances of asserting power," "five theories of Jesus," and so on, I get a little weary about having to keep count on how many points per chapter or per section. While it is easy to follow in terms of point forms, it is quite distracting as far as following the big picture flow is concerned. Used as a reference, this book certainly makes for easy reading. Used as a big picture, readers will find it challenging.

Good Tools to be aware of

The Evangelical's Guide to Spiritual Warfare had some very sound, Biblical, Scriptural advice on "spiritual warfare". It has helped me to be less excessive in helping others in the area of deliverance. I often enjoyed the "excess" associated with Pentecostal Charismatic type worship and had not really realized how that could be a detriment if the one that needed healing did not share that personal view. I personally do not take credit for any miracles or healings that God has performed in my presence. I'm just happy to be one praying with faith for such a thing to be provided.

Prepare to have your faith challenged and life shaken!

This book is probably the most spirit filled and guided work I've read in a long time. You can not help but hear the voice of God calling you to a deeper relationship with Him as you read this amazing classic. From begining to end each page is an impassioned plea for the reader to abandon "comfortable Christianity" in order to truly know God as He desires to be known. You can see right away that truly Mr. Tozer wrote this book on his knees. I found myself challenged to look at my own faith in Christ and what I should be doing with that faith in every chapter. Sometimes with weeping and confessing and always compelled to deep times of prayer and renewel in God's presence. The chapter entitled "The Blessedness of Possesing Nothing" should be required reading for anyone confessing Christ as their Lord. I was totally blown away and my life with Christ and my own pursuit of God has been forever enriched. I have read this book over and over and shared much of it with friends and family. If you are "stuck" in you walk with the Lord, let the Spirit of God use this book to shake you loose and move you onward and upward.

A Book Saturated with God's Presence!

This is one of a few books I've read that, upon reading it, actually manifested God's presence. In line with the teaching of the book, God impressed upon me his love and his desire for a more intimate relationship. I broke into tears. Few books have had that impact. The chapter entitled "The Blessedness of Possessing Nothing" is a profound call to absolute simplicity and abandonment to God who owns everything you may think you "possess", including yourself! Surrender it all to God and see what miracles will be wrought for His glory. Let God possess you! For those who want other recommendations, try "The Christian's Secret to a Happy Life" by Hannah Whitall Smith, "A Testament of Devotion" by Thomas Kelly, "Abandonment to Divine Providence" by Jean-Pierre de Caussade, "The Practice of the Presence of God" by Brother Lawrence and, for those who want to experience God's holiness in a powerful way, "The Holiness of God" by R.C. Sproul. - Brad Clark

The Pursuit of God - made easier to know and practice.

Didn't realize that when they called this book a classic they really meant it. Many ideas and also clear direction to a more full walk with God (which, I think, is what we all really want). For the believer, God's "distance" is never the issue. It is only that we are to tune in to Him and the reassurance of His already immediate presence is known and felt by us. The idea of God's Throne in one's life (and there is room only for One on the throne at any time) is simplified. Yes, we want to walk with God. But remember it is He who reaches out to us before we can know Him in the first place. No wonder this book is so highly regarded.

Awesome clean love story!!!!!

This book was absolutely awesome!!!! I work fulltime and barely have time to clean house much less read for pleasure…however I made time to read this book and can't wait to read the others in the series… very clean romance!!!!!! Loved it…gotta go "Not His Type" awaits me!!!!!

This little book has so much potential, but feel far short of being believable. First of all, the author needs an editor. A really good editor that can sift through all the lengthy paragraphs and read every word. Several sentences had words that had no meaning within the sentence.
Second issue: author needs to develop Proof Reading Skills! At the beginning of Chapter 8, Clay is wakened by the sound of Callan's car door. Later in the same chapter, Callan wakes to find Clay gone. Okay, Ms. Author--you can't have it both ways. Learn to proof you work.

Hoping I can finish this book. Difficult when main character is described so often as having legs that go on forever. Really! A good writer does not use cliches--and a really good author never repeats cliches.

A lot of work went into this story. Too bad she didn't do more.

Cute, sweet romance. It has light Christian overtones, but nothing serious. I enjoyed most of the plot, but it was predictable. I wasn't surprised by any of it. I got sick of jumping to peripheral characters point of view just for them to comment on how wonderful and special a couple they were. There were several places the book could have happily ended. I initially enjoyed seeing their interaction over a longer period of time (the book takes place over a year) but it became tedious towards the end as the author seemed to drag it out. The very end was over the top, in my opinion, and completely unnecessary. It was the only part of the book I had a hard time getting through.

Be sure to check out all three books

Theology of the Body (TOB for short) can be a deep and sometimes confusing subject for even the most educated Catholic. Pope John Paul II talked and wrote on the subject extensively, even before his pontificate. In the simplest of terms it discusses the human body and sexual love. That is the barest of barest details about it, and I have tried to read on it many times and have always walked away scratching my head and with more questions than answers. That's not to say it's not worth studying. It just means I don't have the intelligence to tackle it yet, but hopefully one day. With all of that said, imagine my surprise when I open up a box and discover three board books dubbed TOB for Tots. "How are toddlers supposed to grasp these concepts, when even I can't?" I said to myself, but I decided to give them a shot.

The book titles in the series are Everybody has a Body, Every Body is Smart, and Every Body is a Gift. Looking at the product codes, I believe this is the "proper" reading order. That's not to say you can't read them in any order as the message of each book can stand on its own. Each board book is twelve pages and contains pictures of children of all different races (always appreciated) in the toddler range, as well as their parents, and grandparents. The word body is in bold lettering everywhere it appears to reinforce the focus of the books. Everybody has a Body's main message is that God made our bodies, and how boys and girls are alike, but also stresses that boys and girls have different bodies as well. It does this without explicitly spelling out the differences. Everybody is Smart talks about listening to their bodies when they are hungry or tired and making good choices, like knowing to be quiet in church or eat something healthy and not just cookies. Everybody is a Gift teaches the children about love and how we can show love to others. At the end of each book is a section for adults to help you put the book and teachings in perspective for you and your children.

Overall, I was very impressed by this series. We are just now starting to slowly understand the beauty which is Theology of the Body, and I believe we should be trying to teach it children as early as possible. These books help accomplish that. I hope that there will be more in this series, and also a that there will be series for older children, tweens, teens, etc. I highly recommend these books for parents of young children, teachers, and catechists.

The third book in the series explains that God created “our bodies to be very smart.” Our bodies know when we need certain things such as food or sleep, and we should respond to those needs. The message goes a step further however. It explains there are times when we have the capacity to choose to wait. The idea of waiting for things that we want as a sign of being a big girl or a big boy will appeal to young children. The last sentence of the book is a very simple prayer that can be added to a child’s prayer life.

I applaud the author for taking the beautiful message of the Theology of the Body and making it appropriate for a young child’s journey to understand God’s plan for us all. Parents, grandparents, and teacher will find these books are wonderful lessons about what it means to be created in the image of God – an important foundation for a child’s future. While the world is telling us who we should be, God’s plan is perfect, and a child should learn this truth from the seeds planted by his or her parents and family. This series of books will help parents begin this journey.

Most beginning readers will be able to read the stories on their own. Younger children will enjoy the engaging illustrations while listening to the stories.

A great and welcome addition to the theology of the body literature! Listening to the body is something my pastoral counseling clients lose track of or get trained out of. Teaching kids to listen to their body from the beginning is just plain common sense!! And in a very few pages the authors get right to the point! Thank you!

Excellent Primer on the Meaning and Importance of the Incarnation

All believers are familiar with the fact that Jesus was born of a virgin and came into this earth as a baby boy, lived a sinless life, died for our sins on the cross, and then rose from the grave to conquer death and the grave. With that said, the purpose and importance of the incarnation in all its mystery and glory is a topic many believers have not drilled down enough into. Peter Mead in his book Pleased to Dwell: A Biblical Introduction to the Incarnation strives to walk the reader through how Scripture points to this important event and what it means for God to dwell with us.

Mead aptly notes the language of Genesis 1 “nudges us towards a relational understanding of the image of God. Humanity was not made in the image of a power-hungry dictator. The dominion described is not one of conquering and crushing, but of multiplying and caring.” Furthermore, Mead comments “The climax of the creation account is the ecstatic delight of Adam as he meets his bride…God wants the Bible reader to see, more than anything else, the great picture of marriage.” This is a hugely important point to make when discussing the subject of the incarnation. In the original creation Adam and Eve enjoyed perfect spiritual and physical relationship between themselves and more importantly, with their Creator. Sin marred both relationships, again most important the Creator/creation relationship. The promise of the coming Messiah outlined in Genesis 3 reveals the solution to that broken relationship, namely the incarnation of the Son of God, the bridegroom for the bride. Miss that setup in Genesis 3 and the rest of the story frankly becomes a bit opaque.

This promised Messiah and God’s relationship with His people is continually noted throughout the Old Testament. Mead does an excellent job of tracing this promise in the life of Abraham, Moses, Samuel, David, and the Prophets. It becomes quite clear there was great anticipation for the coming of the Messiah. I appreciated how Mead noted how this promise is revealed through the often neglected genealogical accounts found in the Gospels. In these lists of names, we find God being faithful to His promise of sending a deliverer thus fulfilling the promise made in Genesis 3 and to Abraham. Mead also saliently notes the inclusion of Gentile women in the genealogical accounts, namely Rahab and Ruth, thus revealing God’s promise to Abraham that all the families of the earth would be blessed by the coming of the Messiah. Mead aptly reminds the reader God “even brought together a Moabite widow with good guy Boaz to prepare for the coming king.”

The most enjoyable portion of Mead’s book for me was his discussion of the reason God became man. Far too many continue to treat Jesus as that little baby boy in the manger, somewhat forgetting that he grew up to become a man who died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin and then three days later rose again. Mead examines several New Testament passages to outline why the incarnation was needed. He notes Jesus came to do that which we could not do, namely obeying God’s law. Additionally, Mead outlines how the incarnation displays God’s grace toward us thus focusing our eyes on the second coming of the Messiah and the full renewal and redemption of our physical and spiritual relationship with our Creator. Also, Mead reminds the reader of the humility of the incarnation, the stepping down if you will from glory to this earth which of course resulted in death on a cross on our behalf. All this so that sin and darkness would be defeated as promised long ago.

Mead concludes this helpful book with an excellent point that truly strikes to the heart of the purpose of the incarnation and why we should be forever thankful. He notes “The need on our side was deathly desperate, and the love on God’s side was abundantly overflowing. So He was manifest in the flesh. The forever focus of the Father’s delight was sent to earth for us. He became flesh and dwelt among us. He revealed God the Father to us. He came to rescue and woo us.” I hope the reader will note the lengths God went to restore relationship with us.

If I had any issue with this book it is that I somewhat disagree the incarnation or Pleased to Dwell is an introduction to Christmas. I firmly believe and Mead clearly outlines that the incarnation is of yearlong importance for all believers. This biblical issue should not be something we visit once a year as we unwrap gifts or attend church services where holiday songs are sung. The incarnation is truly God dwelling with us and that is a reality that must be grasped each and every single day of the year. So perhaps this book should be presented as a Biblical introduction to God’s love for us that never fails and that is present all year long.

I highly recommend this book for all believers. It’s devotional style and pastor tone makes for an easy read. Furthermore, Mead examines some very important theological truths in a way that drives home how much God loves His creation to include the beauty of Jesus coming to this earth to deal with the sin and death problem.

A Wonderful New Way to Look at The Birth of Christ!

I have been reading this book as a daily devotional and I love it. It challenges the way I have viewed certain passages and has made me want to dig deeper into the scriptures. I have even been reading it to others and having discussions about the topics in each chapter. This is something I can read over and over and learn new things each time.

It is like sitting down and having a conversation about God in everyday language. It is not like a college textbook, it is more like two friends sharing a new discovery about God and Christ.

I would recommend it to all ages and backgrounds.

Waited for years for a book like Pleased to Dwell

A perfect God, a Perfect World and a Perfect Relationship. Then sin enters this world of perfection and changes everything... but not forever. The Loving Triune God of perfection had a plan. A Christmas Plan!

It would take a few thousand years, filled with a rebellious mankind, determined to believe the lie that destroyed God's perfection, before the pinnacle of God's giving would occur. This gift, for an undeserving and rebellious mankind, has been difficult to absorb for more than 2,000 years: The Triune God, in the form of His Son Jesus Christ, would come to a fallen world to redeem a fallen and rebellious man by paying the ultimate ransom; He would die a painful and ignominious death, while still being rejected by those He came to save.

With this amazing Sacrificial Christmas Gift, the restoration was nearly complete. The only thing left is for each person in this fallen world to either accept or, by default, reject this Christmas Gift from God. To accept Him for who He is in the Person of Jesus Christ and the sacrificial gift He gave on your behalf. At some unknown time in the future, the God of perfection will return in the form of His Son, Jesus Christ, and finish the restoration of perfection by taking all of us, who accepted His Perfect Christmas Gift, to be with Him for all eternity, in a perfect relationship with the perfect God who gave Himself as the Perfect Christmas Gift, that we might be brought back to a perfect home.

Peter puts just the right amount of meat on the bones so you will be compelled to reach for a Bible and do some in-depth follow-up as you delve into the Scripture references for yourself.

About the Author
Father Paul O'Sullivan, O.P., was born on February 7, 1871. After studying in Dublin, he went on to Rome, where he was ordained a Dominican. He then pursued a Lectorate degree for theology, which in turn prepared him for his future career in writing simple, profound books and preaching to the faithful. He is the author of How to Be Happy, All About the Angels, The Wonders of the Mass, Read Me or Rue It, An Easy Way to Become a Saint, and The Secret of Confession.
Father O'Sullivan also founded the ???Catholic Printing Press??? and established the Rosary Association, one of several associations he created with the Church's permission. He wrote on and had a great devotion to St. Philomena as well. He died in 1958, on the Feast of the Presentation.

MUST READ FOR ALL CATHOLICS!

This book shows the unestimable graces we receive each time we participate in the Sacrifice of the Mass. It tells us how much more blessed we are than the angels, because they can't receive the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity that we receive every Sunday and often take for granted. I recomment this for Priests to read as a homily on a day when many are in attendance, because this will get people coming to church as often as they can.
