I absolutely love this book

I absolutely love this book! Although it is deeply rooted in scripture, it also contains relatable characters and scenarios that make it easily applicable. My favorite thing about this book is that at the end of each chapter, there are take-a-ways titled "Seeds of Success”, which basically sums up the most important lessons in that chapter. This book is very well written and unlike some self-help styled books that I’ve read, it’s not overwhelming or hard to digest. I highly recommend this book to book clubs or study groups because the "Points of Action" that are also included after each chapter, include a lesson or task to help apply what you've read. I plan on reading this book again soon and I hope there is a part II in the making.

This is a comprehensive book about how to achieve success in the Christian life. It discusses many of the major challenges that we face in life, from fear and past hurts to occupational and relationship challenges. Dr. Shelton-Quinn cites a multitude of scriptures in the book and uses descriptive real-life situations to demonstrate life-application. The Points of Action & Prayers at the end of each chapter make this book truly an invaluable transformational tool! The messages of the chapters are relevant for new and mature Christians. Awesome read!

This book has helped me face my fears and hold firm to my Faith. I can now, as Dr. Shelton-Quinn puts it "Launch out into the deep."

As soon as I received my book and start reading it, I couldn't put it down. This book provide good insight on how to have a successful life. Some of the chapters really hit home and after reading them I felt inspired to becoming a better person.I really enjoyed reading this book and it's has helped me out in more ways than one. It is good that Christmas and Easter are not far apart because we cannot understand one without the other. If Christmas tells us why Jesus came, then Easter tells us he fully accomplished his mission.

In between those two events we have the whole life of Christ. That’s our focus as we walk “In His Steps.” Between now and Easter we will cover many of the places Jesus visited while he was on the earth. I hope in taking this journey together, we will come to know Christ better and to love him more.

The forty-seven devotionals take us from Ash Wednesday all the way to Easter. Since the dates of Lent change each year, we have numbered the days so this devotional will fit during any Lenten season.

No one who met our Lord ever stayed the same. The same is true today. May these Lenten devotionals help us all to say, “Lord Jesus, I am ready to follow you!”

Encouragement to walk with Jesus

Excellent Devotional that I used during this year’s (2015) Lent season.

Being affiliated with the Apostolic Oneness Pentecostal way, there may have been a few statements I disagreed with. However, knowing this individual is a Trinitarian it is to be expected. Ultimately I found much of the material to be heartwarming and thought-provoking to the Glory of Israel’s God in, through and (as) our Lord, Savor and King Jesus Christ.

Dr. Ray Pritchard communicated many Biblical truths very well.

"Jesus was a traveling man." I love that first sentence from this new Lenten Devotional. It set the scene for the remainder of the Lenten journey. I highly recommend this thought provoking and encouraging devotional that leads us along the path that Jesus took from birth to His glorious resurrection. This is an excellent Lenten Devotional for the whole family.

Not Very "Lenten" in Overall Content.

Most of Pritchard's devotionals I would rate with four or five stars, but this particular devotional was not very "Lenten" in it's overall content. It covers the life of Christ from Incarnation on, but I don't feel like Pritchard presents even this as well as he has done in his other writings. It may be that I have a different idea as to what a Lenten devotional ought to look like.

Prichard's other devotional works have been a real blessing to our family, and I would encourage folks to try them out.

A Lenten book that will impact your entire year

I’ll admit it: I was DREADING reading this book. because I had to read it just on the cusp of FALL. I DID NOT WANT TO THINK ABOUT LENT.

And yet, this book was exactly what I needed. I found myself appreciating that I was reading it now, because when Lent rolls around, I’m going to have this book beside me for round 2. (And I’m not a big re-reader of books.) What D’Ambrosio has crafted is part treasury, part practical toolbox, and part kick in the pants. He’s tapped into his experience as a normal guy and his expertise as a theologian-type, wrapped it up into a book that’s both digestible and good reading, and then shared it with all of us.

This book was a gift to read, and I plan to craft a thank you note. I fail at Lent pretty much every year (and I guess that’s how I know I’m succeeding, to some extent), and this year, I plan to fail with this book in hand. And then I’ll get back up, dust myself off again, and try again.

Because this book makes me want to. It makes me want to try. And then try again. And then, because I know I’ll have to, try yet again.

What a book. Go on. Consider it my gift to you: a book you can have in hand for Lent that will impact the entire year.

A book about what you can do (instead of what you cannot do) for Lent

40 Days, 40 Ways is Dr. Marcellino D'Ambrosio's latest book. You might remember his previous one, which I also reviewed, called When the Church was Young! In his latest book, he attempts to get us to look at Lent in a new way. Most people dread Lent, and just try and find something to give up to satisfy the requirement and have their "card punched." Dr. D'Ambrosio (aka Dr. Italy) instead provides us with devotions, prayers, or other tasks we can do. He tries to make Lent more about what we can do and not what we cannot do.

Each day is about two to three pages long, and starts with a suggestion on what to do, not just this day in Lent, but the whole season. Some of the tasks are "easy," like pledging to say the "Our Father" three times a day. Other tasks require more effort like going on a contemplative retreat during Lent. After the task, we are then given a long reflection on the specific task for the day. For example, on the day that tells us to pledge to say the "Our Father," Dr. Italy discusses the word father, its meaning, and how personal it is that we can call God our Father. In addition to covering the 40 days of Lent, there are reflections (but no task to complete) for each Sunday during Lent, as well as Easter Sunday. There is also a helpful section of resources at the end, which includes prayers, devotions, books to read, etc.

I found this book to be a refreshing change of perspective on Lent. Be sure to read the Preface, I didn't my first time through and thought the book was a bit overwhelming. However, reading the Preface he encourages you to read through the Table of Contents, and pick a few tasks you can accomplish this Lent. A lot of the tasks are easy enough to accomplish, but if you try and do too many, you might find yourself burnt out trying to change too much, too quickly. I think I will re-read this book during Lent and try and incorporate some of the ideas and maybe gradually over several Lents, I will have accomplished everything in this book. If you're looking for a book that makes you think and re-evaluate what Lent is about (growth and doing stuff, not just giving stuff up), then pick up a copy of Dr. Italy's latest book.

Something for everyone

Marcellino D'Ambrosio opens 40 Days, 40 Ways by describing the scriptural basis for Lent from Noah on the ark through the temptation of Jesus in the desert (Luke 4:1-13). The 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Holy Saturday are "training days," he explains. The six Sundays of Lent, always exempt from fasting, are mini-celebrations of Christ's resurrection. This distinction underlies the 40 Days, 40 Ways format. Each Sunday is devoted to a general meditation, but content for the weekdays consists of life-changing actions that can lead to a fuller discipleship.

D'Ambrosio provides guidance for using the book to best advantage. Before Lent begins, read the Table of Contents, with its specific daily goals (for example, Day 12: Read a portion of Scripture every day). Praying for guidance from the Holy Spirit, choose up to three items that seem both important and realistic, then read the pages about those activities and commit to following the practice faithfully throughout Lent. Next, commit to reading the appropriate pages every day and trying to carry out the practice at least on that day if not on a more regular basis.

Though the activities are presented in random order, I found myself fitting them under the following four themes: prayer and scripture, worship, reaching out, and learning. These are fluid and often overlap. For example, we learn about the works of mercy on Day 10. The action for Day 23 is reach out to the least important, least popular, most ignored..... Day 28: Visit someone lonely in the neighborhood, the hospital, or prison. Day 32: Pray regularly for those whose rights and dignity are trampled and for those responsible for their pain. Look for a way to help. Day 35: Learn the Prayer of Abandonment of Blessed Charles de Foucauld. Surrender your possessions, your future, and your life to God as you slowly pray it daily.

About the Author
Michael Davies, who lived from 1936-2004, was a Catholic writer who authored various works following the Second Vatican Council, in addition to unifying Una Voce America, a conservative group. Previously an Anglican, he converted to the Catholic Church in the 1950s, and went on to compose such works as The Liturgical Revolution, The Order of Melchisedech, Partisans of Error, For Altar and Throne, and The Wisdom of Adrian Fortescue. Upon Davies' death in 2004, Pope Benedict XVI called him a man of deep faith who was ready to embrace suffering. His Holiness went on to say, "...We can be confident that the Lord opened wide for him the gates of Heaven. We commend his soul to the Lord's mercy."

Development of the Roman Liturgy

In this well written booklet, Michael Davies does a wonderful job of giving a compact history of the Roman Rite Mass. His coverage takes us from the Last Supper to the Traditional Mass as it is said today. We also get an explanation on the origins of the Low Mass.

He goes over the reforms of Pope St. Gregory the Great and Pope St. Pius V. Which shows us how the liturgical texts were always treated with great respect and any changes were minor. And it remained so until 1970 when radical changes were made.

Read this book and you will gain an appreciation of the Traditional Mass, known as the Tridentine Mass.

Both History and Apology

Both a histiry and an apology (in the litereary/rhetorical sense), this very short (60 pages or so) book describes the evolution of the Tridentine Mass, as well as the explanation tracing it back to as early ast the 4th Century. The apologetics as it pertains to other rites, the Eastern Orthodox, the Protestant Reformation and the 1970 Novus Ordo make it much less of an unbiased history and much more of a religious book. If you have interest in the subject, it's an interesting background read.

Excellent overview

Davies is undoubtedly one of the most important figures in "Traditional" Catholicism in the English-speaking world over the past several decades. This overview, if oversimplified at times, provides the reader with a brief summary of the development of the Mass according to the Roman Rite from it's roots in Apostolic times through the Early Greats (Leo and Gregory), the Renaissance standardizations (Pius V) to the implementation of the Mass of Paul VI in 1970. A great introduction for the casual reader.

The Catholic Sanctuary and the Second Vatican Council would make an excellent follow up. At about $6 for both (less if purchased in bulk from the publisher directly) and about 100 pp. one cannot get a better, more affordable summary of the historic Mass of the Roman Rite or the present situation in which the Roman Rite finds itself.

Lisa McKendrick lives in Lakeland, Florida, in a house that is very boring. It is not haunted or cursed, and there's no hidden treasure buried beneath it (she's checked). After going to school forever, she graduated from Brigham Young University with a master's degree in English. She is the mother of six kids, all of whom love every chance they get to play with their cousins. She is married to Rich McKendrick, a real nice guy who likes to collect flashlights. Fun, clean romantic comedy

Sophie loves her dad and wants to marry someone just like him. Her relationship with her mother is much more complicated; her mother is over opinionated, overbearing and critical.
On learning as a small child that she cannot marry her father, he suggests that she begin writing letters to her future husband in a special journal. Though reluctant at first, by the time she is a teen, crushing on her brother's friend, the journal has become a place to fantasize about the future until her snooping mother ruins everything by violating her daughter's trust and reading her diary.
As a young adult her grandmother, with whom Sophie is very close, pays for her to travel around Europe. Fate steps in and while visiting romantic Florence, Italy she happens to run into her childhood crush. She spends an idyllic day with him only to discover that evening that in reality he is severely flawed. Crushed and embarrassed the crush's room mate rescues her and takes her safely back to her hotel amid reveling, drunken, Italian soccer lovers. In her depressed state she and the room mate share a romantic moment but Sophie puts it down to being on the rebound and the next day continues her vacation.
Ten years later the strained relationship with her mother finds her working clear across the country for an advertising agency. Still unmarried but dating a guy who is a successful hedge-fund manager, life seems to be headed in the right direction, until Sophie goes home for Christmas and bumps into the room mate from Italy. Her successful boyfriend surprises Sophie by flying in to meet her at her parent's and the difference in the two men is highlighted by their proximity. After a falling out with her boyfriend her heart turns towards the man from her past. She is encouraged in this by dreams where her future daughter appears to her and tells her the room mate should be her dad.
As usual the course of true love does not run very straight but eventually comes to a satisfying end.
The characters are funny and quirky and the story is full of good, clean humor. This is a book directed primarily at an LDS audience but is a light romantic comedy that would be enjoyed by any teen.

The Perfect Blend of Romance and Humor

Lisa is an established author with three other books under her belt. She knows how to blend romance and humor perfectly. I'm a singleton myself, but I never would have guessed how relatable I would find her spunky main character, Sophia Stark, from Letters. Sophie's journey through life and the Big Bad Dating World touched my heart and kept me laughing until the very end. My favorite element of the story is her preteen mentor on the journey, a sassy ten-year-old who will one day be Sophia's daughter. As you might expect, Sophie's interactions with her daughter grow her as a woman and enrich the experience of finding her future husband.

As a helpless romantic, Letters had me cheering, cringing, and occasionally berating Sophia for her bonehead choices, all of which only serve to make her a more lovable heroine. Letters is a story that heart and soul celebrates womanhood. It's one that both married and singletons alike will appreciate and that women of all ages can enjoy.

LOVED. LOVED. LOVED. IT!

Not only are there letters to a future husband...

There are also wonderful dream-chats with her future daughter (really fun scenes causing much lack of sleep :)

About the Author

A beautiful book filled with bite-sized pieces of solid, substantial truth--Spurgeon exposits the Scripture concisely and powerfully for daily edification. Much food for meditation even when time is short. Makes a wonderful gift!
