But now as the aforesaid Bishop has left us and departed to Christ, meanwhile these ten Conferences of the grandest of the Fathers, viz., the Anchorites who dwelt in the desert of Scete, which he, fired with an incomparable desire for saintliness, had bidden me write for him in the same style (not considering in the greatness of his affection, what a burden he placed on shoulders too weak to bear it)--these Conferences I have thought good to dedicate to you in particular, O blessed Pope, Leontius, and holy brother Helladius. For one of you was united to him whom I have mentioned, by the ties of brotherhood, and the rank of the priesthood, and (what is more to the point) by fervour in sacred study, and so has an hereditary right to demand the debt due to his brother: while the other has ventured to follow the sublime customs of the Anchorites, not like some others, presumptuously on his own account, but seizing, at the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, on the right path of doctrine almost before he had been taught and choosing to learn not so much from his own ideas as from their traditions. Wherein just as I had anchored in the harbour of Silence, a wide sea opens out before me, so that I must venture to hand down for posterity some of the Institutes and teaching of these great men."

About the Author
John Cassian was born about the year 360 to wealthy and pious parents. While still young he left the opportunities for worldly success behind him and entered a monastery. He spent many years in the monasteries of Syria, but his greatest wish was to visit the monasteries of Egypt and speak with the spiritual fathers in the desert. During two lengthy journeys, of many years extent, with his spiritual friend Germanus, he was able to learn from experience the Egyptian monastic tradition. He was sent to Rome in about 404 with a letter for Pope Innocent, and spent the rest of his life in the West. He founded a monastery near Marseille which followed the Eastern monastic tradition and wrote his three great works there, the Institutes, the Conferences and On the Incarnation. He finally died in about 432.

Really helpful spiritual classic

I must admit that John Cassian is one of my favourite spiritual writers so I wasn't surprised to find that I enjoyed this collection of his conversations as well. The main reason I rate it so high is that it is better value than any of the other editions which are available. I do recommend any of John Cassians writings that you can get hold of, and at the price this is probably the best edition at the moment of this particular work.

Bought this for Kindle and it has no table of contents. Not sure why they still do this. You can find a better version with active table of contents in a PDF file here: www.documentacatholicaomnia.eu/03d/0360-0435,_Cassianus,_The_Conferences_Of_John_Cassian,_EN.pdf. I saved the file to Dropbox, opened it up on my iPad and was able to use it immediately.

Sound Guidance for those seeking the kingdom of God

I have read many of the spiritual books concerning the Desert Fathers - mostly written about or by the Eastern or Orthodox church. John Cassian's Conferences is another excellent book. The John Cassian recounts meeting or conferences he had with the Fathers. Typically he would ask a spiritual question and the Fathers would respond, a common technique of those times. While the translations of many of the books I have read were poor this version is excellent.

About the Author
James W. Goll is a lover of Jesus who cofounded Encounters Network, an organization dedicated to changing lives and impacting nations by releasing God's presence through prophetic, intercessory, and compassionate ministry. He is the founder of the God Encounters Training E–School of the Heart—"where faith and life meet." He is also International Director of Prayer Storm, a 24/7/365 media–based house of prayer. After serving as a pastor in the Midwest, James was thrust into the role of international itinerant teacher and trainer. He has traveled extensively in over fifty nations, carrying a passion for Jesus wherever he goes. To Know God, You Must Engage in Passionate Pursuit!

Deb's Dozen: To know God, we must understand the Trinity and know His Word.

In these days of feel good Christianity and many churches’ desires to ensure the people in the pews are “comfortable,” James Goll’s book, Passionate Pursuit: Getting to Know God and His Word is as a fresh breeze. Goll wrote the book because he believes the fundamental teachings of the faith are not emphasized enough by the Church today. He feels we greatly underappreciate God, the Great I AM; the Son, the human incarnation of God; and the Spirit, the active part of God who brings us to Him. The book is divided into two sections—the first about the Trinity—and how we know God by our understanding of the Trinity. The second section show us how to know God through His Word, the Holy Bible.

The first section, about the Trinity, shows us how deeply God desires a relationship with us and that in turn, our greatest blessings come the more we know about God and His nature. Only if we truly understand God can we truly understand the relationship we have with Him through Jesus Christ and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. We have to be intentional about seeking to know Him more deeply. “After all, God said, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ He didn’t say, I am the God who ‘was’ or I am the God who ‘will be.'” The more we study and learn, the more we can experience His love. Topics Goll covers in Section One are those such as “God as Our Personal Father,” “God’s Amazing Attributes,” “The Messiah Has Come!” and “Holy Spirit, You are Welcome Here.” James’ desire is to show us “Here is the God who created the universe, and yet He is relational. He already knows you inside and out, and He wants you to know Him. He wants us all to know His heart.”

Section Two covers “Knowing the Master Builder,” “Hungry for His Every Word,” and “The Uniqueness of God’s Word” among others. He begins this section with this statement:
If you want to know God’s heart, then you must know His Word, where His nature and character are revealed. The Word speaks to you directly with His voice … and “God’s words, as revealed in the Scriptures, are trustworthy. God’s authoritative Word is inspired by the Holy Spirit. This Word takes the ‘warp’ out of our lives and sets us on the straight path. The Word is consistent and powerful, pulling down negative strongholds and making us complete in Him.

He states that “knowing God is not automatic; it is a lifelong process that required dedication to the task. It is a lost art, and I have dedicated my life to bring it back to the people of God.” He encourages us to be more like Mary sitting at the feet of Jesus and less like Martha—we’re to “get out of the kitchen” and into the life and love He has for us.

If you are interested in growing deeper in your Christian walk, you’ll want to read Passionate Pursuit. James Goll brings to our remembrance or, perhaps, first knowledge, the Awesomeness of Almighty God and the power and privilege of His Word. Although you may find the Scriptures quoted within familiar, I trust they will also positively impact your desire to grow closer to God. I would rate this book five stars due to the importance of the Christian’s knowing intimately the material contained within.

Passionate Pursuit consists of teachings about God backed up by the appropriate Scriptures. Goll told me the book came into being over twelve years of discovering God and His nature—he taught these things in a class. He is concerned the plethora of writings today are all about helping people and not about teaching them to grow in knowledge of the supernatural—they’re more about today’s culture. He feels they teach God “stuff” but are not about teaching God.

In an effort to reaffirm his beliefs, he went back to look at the “classics” of Christian literature to see what had been said. He came under conviction that we need to center on God the Father, Jesus Christ the Messiah, and the Holy Spirit. He wants us to remember and deeply know “The Father, the Son, and the Spirit are love personified. This is the Godhead.”

I asked James what he learned about himself during the writing of this book. He said he started with the goal of “helping people think” He says as he began to teach this class (and write the book), he had to go back and ask, “What do I really believe myself?” He told me the writing helped him truly anchor his own soul to the truths of God and Scripture.

He studied at Central Missouri State and was valedictorian in 1970. He was on scholarship and enjoyed singing (bass and baritone). After a Bachelor’s in Social Work at Wesley Catholic Center in St, Joseph, he thought he’d work in biological research. However, his uncle, a Methodist minister spent much time conversing with him. His uncle was a church person who had “died to credentials before me.” James said, “I got saved from living a successful sinning life.

James has written more than thirty books—largely because books were his mentors and he wanted to be a mentor to others. He has a doctorate in Practical Ministry (2007) from and has worked for the Wagner Leadership Institute. He is the founder of the God Encounters Training E-School of the Heart—“where faith and life meet.” After serving in the pastorate in the Midwest, “he was thrust into the role of international itinerant teacher and trainer and has traveled extensively in over fifty nations.”

What did I learn about James from our interview? He has a great sense of humor, a wonderful speaking voice, and considers himself a “hipster.” He was a singer before he was a preacher and still sings every morning and evening.

Most interesting papers on Jacob 5 - great background and analysis

This is a big and very interesting book on a very specific parable in the Book of Mormon contained in the book of Jacob chapter 5. Jacob is teaching his people their place in history of God's plan for his chosen people. Here he quotes the prophet Zenos, a book contained on the plates of Brass, but currently lost from the Bible. Jacob is calling his people to righteousness in the surrounding chapters and assuring them that God has not forgotten them and will at some point graft them back into the House of Israel.

So, why such a big book over a one chapter parable? This book contains twenty-one chapters grouped into five parts. Part 1 contains five papers discussing aspects of the meaning of Zeno's Allegory of the Olive Tree including an a review of what the early 19th century saints said about this allegory. Part 2 provides four papers on textual analysis including chapters 4 & 6 and textual variants. Part 3 has three papers providing insights into what the olive mean in the Greco-Roman world, and in the writings of the ancient near east and the Old Testament. Part 4 has seven papers reviewing early Jewish and Christian texts and their symbolic use of the olive. One very interesting paper by David Seely and John Welch discusses some Old Testament texts that may have been borrowing from Zenos. Part 5 provides some background on the botany and horticulture of olives. It is interesting to note that the parable gets the caring of olive trees just right and even has a picture of an old olive tree with exactly the kind of grafting described in the parable. The other paper shows that calling the olive orchard a vineyard is consistent with ancient linguistic usage.

This book will enrich your understanding of this beautiful and important chapter in the Book of Mormon. Believers will find their testimony strengthened and enjoy how the material here will enrich their enjoyment of the scripture.

yet easily understood allegory and would be difficult for any to ...

Although this work, which includes many assembled essays regarding the allegory of the olive tree which appears in Jacob 5 in the Book of Mormon, will certainly be of greater interest to Latter-day Saints, the work is of considerable scholarly importance and should be heeded by any who are interested in Judaism or Christianity and their ancient roots.
This is long and extremely complex, yet easily understood allegory and would be difficult for any to compose of oneself, especially were one to know nothing of olive husbandry, its importance in the ancient world and its potential for allegorical application. It is an amazing allegory, especially if it were composed by an young and somewhat ignorant farmer, who although he might know something of temperate fruit farming, would know nothing of olives, and while staring into a hat in the dark at a stone at that. This book helps one to understand both the symbolism of the allegory and the nature of olive husbandry anciently and now. As such it is an invaluable reference work putting this little gem into its proper place in the canon. Sacred to Latter-day Saints it should also be of interest to any who are interested in the works of antiquity.
I doubt that Joseph Smith could possibly have composed this of himself, even were he to have Paul and Isaiah and their somewhat limited reference to olives, Israel and trees right in front of him. It can stand as evidence that the Book of Mormon really is an ancient work while also validating ancient scripture.
This work assembled by Stephen Ricks helps one to understand its real importance. I have enjoyed it now twice, once in print and once on my iPhone. I highly recommend it.

Olive tree

I am not a Mormon but believe the Book of Mormon is God's Word that came through a people in this land. It is in agreement with the Bible. I got this book because I love the Allegory of the vineyard that is in the Book of Jacob in the Book of Mormon. It is very prophetic. This book is a collection of many LDS discussions on the allegory. It has a lot of things that are LDS in it which I just push aside. But there is a lot of good in it also.

The gospel: The power of God to save.

The title of this book relates to Bunyan's Pilgrims Progress. The Pilgrim had to go through a little wicket gate, which stands for the entrance into the Kingdom (or salvation).

Charles Spurgeon, a greatly gifted physician of souls, was concerned that many hung around the wicket gate, as it were, but did not go in. Part of the problem being that they found many reasons to exclude themselves from the simple, honest and real invitation to every man, woman and child, who was willing to enter in. Remember the leper who came to Jesus and said: "If You are willing, You can make me clean"? Jesus answered: "I am willing, be clean", and with that He touched and healed the sick man. There was no lack of willingness in Jesus. All who come to Him for salvation will find it, because He was so willing that He actually died to get us in.

But even to believers the mysteries of the wicket gate can be quite daunting. After all, if we are not sure how we got in the gate, we can hardly recommend it to others! It only takes a little doubt to shut us up, and make us feel that if we only ploughed our way through a virtual library of books our assurance in the gospel would return. This won't do.

But what should someone do to be saved? Must they conclude that the wicket gate, that gives them access to light and life, is actually their baptism; or their going forward in a meeting; or their sinner's prayer; or even their spoken declaration to follow Jesus? This is what this small book is concerned with and helps us understand.

Why do I recommend this book to you? I do so because the gospel is at once utterly simple and at the same time profoundly deep. The gospel is, actually, if you wish to look at it like this, an introduction to the real and living Lord, Jesus Christ. It is not just accepting a number of propositions; neither is it simply getting your head round some difficult concepts. It is quite literally to encounter Jesus for yourself.

The reason that the gospel is the power of God to save is that it presents Jesus. The evangelist doesn't save people, nor, in a sense, does the repentant sinner get HIMSELF saved. The gospel is a wicket gate - a door. That door is Jesus. It's not just about Jesus; it is Jesus! "I am the door", says Jesus, "He who enters by Me shall be saved".

When you get excited about the "wicket gate" you aren't just getting excited about some method or way of salvation, you are getting excited about Jesus; the Jesus that died and rose again for you. That's why I can happily recommend this book to you: I want you to know Him.

Spurgeon's book is a concise look at scriptural teaching on what true salvation is, and is not. He uses the allegory "Pilgrim's Progress" to illustrate his teachings on the matter. This book is an easy read, but pithy and thought-provoking. I enjoyed this book very much and have passed it on to others.

An insightful, valuable exploration of anxiety

Rhett Smith approaches a challenging topic--one that is often tackled with a "fix it" perspective--with gentleness, wisdom, and compelling insight. I love how he shares transparently from his own challenges and struggles with anxiety, while at the same time drawing on his considerable experience and training as licensed marriage and family therapist.

Discussions about anxiety so often approach it as a problem to be fixed--one that is ultimately shameful and a sign of weakness, and one that should be hidden from others in professional settings and even at times in personal relationships.

But Rhett forgoes these all-too-common approaches in The Anxious Christian: Can God Use Your Anxiety for Good? and instead delves into how anxiety can be a potential source of good in a person's life.

For me personally, I was really touched by his exploration of how our anxiety can be reimagined, that is, how God can use it to reshape pain and suffering in powerful ways. Rhett writes that "[anxiety] is God's tool to help you grow, and the catalyst that helps us get unstuck and move out of the rut." In fact, God uses anxiety, Rhett explains, "[...] as a way for you to give birth to new life and to follow after the new opportunities that are out there that He is calling you toward" (p.76).

As someone who has experienced anxiety to deep and impacting degrees at many points in my life, I found this book to contain very good news--a most welcome message of hope.

Anxious Christian lifts this struggle from the cellar of shame, that much of society has labeled it, and provides a new perspective laced with hope. In what reads more like a memoir than self-help, Smith is like a friend saying “I know how you feel.”

The problem with The Anxious Christian is its theology on suffering. Smith, a licensed therapist, seems to endorse the idea that anxiety is from God rather than the result of living in an imperfect world. Referencing a session with a therapy client and the cause of the person’s anxiety, Smith asked the client, “What if God put that anxiety in your life for a purpose?” (84) Smith also reflects on his own life and suggests “…anxiety was perhaps a feeling that God had placed in my life to help bring about change.” (88)

The idea of God bringing a spirit of power, love and a sound mind doesn’t seem to match with Smith’s idea that God is the source of anxiety.

Describes what is coming

Very well it describes what is coming with the Antichrist empire and how we are quickly being hurled toward as it.
He is correct that events are being manipulated by the elite to bring their God to the forefront.
We live in perilous times but our Lord Jesus is always in control.

Bad Exegesis and Eschatology

Wish I could have given it no stars. Some people want to write books purely on the sweat of someone else's brow. It's like cheating on a test. The sad truth is he's regurgitating bad, unsound exegesis and eschatology. Never in all the interaction the Israelites or Jews had with God did God ever return them to the promised land without their repentance. When have the Jews repented and turned to Christ? They haven't and they won't until Christ Jesus' second coming. Most are secular; some are satanic with their belief in the talmud and kaballah. Tel Aviv is the most homosexual friendly city in the world. The verses in Isaiah, Ezekiel and Hosea refer to the millennium NOT to 1947. Until people get the eschatology right, most will fall prey to the antichrist. Know to that the 70 Weeks Prophecy was completed when the Jews rejected Christianity 3 1/2 years after the death of Christ which is when the apostles went to the gentiles. In the entire new testament, there is no corroboration for a 7 year tribulation period only that there will be tribulation or great tribulation. There is no biblical authority anywhere in the Bible for splitting off the last week. These are deceptions propagated by the adversary and carried on by those that are blind. Read the Bible as if you have no preconceived ideas fostered by others. You will then see the truth.

Kindle formatting is horrible!!!! Content interesting.

The biggest problem with this book is that the formatting for the Kindle is horrible!!! There are whole sections that are a mix of pictures and some faint text. Skipped pages. How something like this get's through a review process is unbelievable!!! No quality control at all. The content of the book is very interesting although I wish I had tons of time to fact check everything that is written in a book. You have to hope the author is being factual.
