About the Author
Father Paul O'Sullivan, O.P., was born on February 7, 1871. After studying in Dublin, he went on to Rome, where he was ordained a Dominican. He then pursued a Lectorate degree for theology, which in turn prepared him for his future career in writing simple, profound books and preaching to the faithful. He is the author of How to Be Happy, All About the Angels, The Wonders of the Mass, Read Me or Rue It, An Easy Way to Become a Saint, and The Secret of Confession.
Father O'Sullivan also founded the "Catholic Printing Press" and established the Rosary Association, one of several associations he created with the Church's permission. He wrote on and had a great devotion to St. Philomena as well. He died in 1958, on the Feast of the Presentation.

The Power of God for Every Believer

Meyer is unparalleled in his "biographies" of Biblical characters. He stresses how these are not vaunted men of legend to whom us mere mortals should never aspire to be like. Rather, he shows the very human nature, as conveyed in scripture, that marks these men.

Elijah was a rough, back-woods shepherd who claimed faith in God's promises. This took him from his wild fields to the palace halls, where he was probably a curiosity to the refined crowd.

When you read the pages of this book you find the treasure of gold that God has given us (and mined so expertly by Meyer) in the pages of 1 and 2 Kings.

The secret of Elijah's power is something each and every believer can and should possess. And in these days it has never been so vital that Christians step forward in faith to claim it.

An excellent guide to Mariology for both the beginner and the more experienced

An excellent introduction to Mariology for the beginner which will also prove fruitful for the one more experienced in the field. The title of the book seems inspired from some words on page v:

"There is no rose of such virtue
As is the Rose that bare Jesu
-Medieval English carol"

The cover featuring the Russian icon Our Lady of Korsum drew me in to take a look. When I saw in the "Contents" chapter "4. The Co-redemptrix" and chapter "6. Mediatrix of Graces", I decided to purchase the book. I am interested in seeing the promulgation of a fifth Marian dogma. How that will be described, I don't know. Maybe something along the lines of: Mary, Co-Redemptrix and Mediatrix of Graces. I agree with Mark Miravalle who is mentioned on pages 87 and 88:

"[I]n the words of American Mariologist Mark Miravalle: 'The corpus of Marian dogma will not be complete until the Church presents a dogma directly defining the nature of Mary's co-redemptive mission with the Redeemer.'"

Page 112 mentions Saint John Paul II:

"As John Paul II affirmed in a 1985 address at the Ecuadorian sanctuary of our Lady of Alborado, 'Mary's role as co-redemptrix did not cease with the glorification of her Son.'"

The book covers the development of the very early Church's thoughts about the Mother of God, travels through the centuries, and mentions a number of popes, including Pope Francis.

The final chapter, entitled, "An Excursion on Eastern Orthodox Theology and Marian Art" is a bit different but also enjoyable.

Nichols' prose and logic demonstrates his mastery of Catholic mariology. It is particularity useful for the non-Catholic reader; albeit you may have some trouble with it if it is your first text in theology.

A compelling and refreshing view of life after death

In his new book on heaven, appropriately titled HEAVEN, Randy Alcorn tells the story of an English vicar. When asked by a colleague what he expected after death, he replied, "Well, if it comes to that, I suppose I shall enter into eternal bliss, but I really wish you wouldn't bring up such depressing subjects."

I asked her if she thought Tom Sawyer would go there, and she said not by a considerable sight. I was glad about that because I wanted him and me to be together."

It's exactly this kind of bland vision of eternity that Alcorn's book seeks to dispel.

"The pious Miss Watson had nothing to say about Heaven that appealed to Huck. What would have attracted him was a place where he could do meaningful and pleasurable things with enjoyable people. In fact, that's a far more accurate description of what Heaven will actually be like. If Miss Watson had told Huck what the Bible says about living in a resurrected body and being with people we love on a resurrected Earth with gardens and rivers and mountains and untold adventures --- now that would have gotten his attention!"

Indeed, and it got my attention too. Despite my education at a Bible college, I've spent little time thinking about or studying the logistics of eternity. And I'm not alone. Whereas heaven used to be on the forefront of the collective Christian mind, it receives little attention these days. Alcorn suggests a number of reasons for the waning interest in heaven, but the bulk of his polemic effort is to stoke curiosity and he does a tremendous job.

For example, do you realize that the place you go when you die is not the place where you will spend eternity? I'll let Alcorn explain:

"The answer to the question 'Will we live in Heaven forever?' depends on what you mean by Heaven. Will we be with the Lord forever? Absolutely. Will we always be with him in exactly the same place that Heaven is now? No. In the intermediate Heaven, we'll be in Christ's presence, and we'll be joyful, but we'll be looking forward to our bodily resurrection and permanent relocation to the New Earth."

Alcorn goes on to quote theologian Wayne Grudem who says, "Christians often talk about living with God 'in heaven' forever. But in fact the biblical teaching is richer than that: it tells us that there will be a new heaven and a new earth --- an entirely renewed creation --- and we will live with God there.... There will also be a new kind of unification of heaven and earth.... There will be a joining of heaven and earth in this new creation."

"Oh yeah," I thought to myself. "The New Earth!" If you've studied Revelation you know that Christ will return to remake the world after the Tribulation and Armageddon and all those staples of the Christian imagination take place. This is clear regardless of when or if you think the rapture will actually happen. Somehow I had never integrated Revelation's teaching on the New Earth with my thoughts about eternity. Indeed, it seems to support Alcorn's idea that the place we go when we die is only intermediate, temporary lodging until we can move to Earth part 2.

Frankly, I find the idea of living on a perfect earth full in a resurrected body in God's presence to be incredibly compelling. Forget the clouds. Where did we get that idea anyway?

HEAVEN is divided into three sections: a theology of heaven, questions and answers about heaven, and living in light of heaven. So after he explains his views on heaven, he provides practical answers to questions everyone has wondered about at one time or another. In HEAVEN you can find answers to questions including: "Can people see what's happening on the Earth from heaven?" "Will we experience time in heaven?" "Will the New Earth be like Eden?" "Will we maintain our own identities in heaven?" and "Will our resurrected bodies have new abilities?" And that's just scratching the surface. HEAVEN is nothing if not comprehensive.

It's important to note that, despite his clear conviction about his understanding of heaven, Alcorn is quick to welcome any biblical evidence that he has come to the wrong conclusions about eternity. Being biblical is his utmost priority.

"From the beginning, I want to make it clear that it's vitally important that this book be true to Scripture. I believe that most of my conclusions, even those that significantly depart from current evangelical thinking, will stand up to biblical scrutiny. Inevitably, however, some may not. In the context of prophetic statements, the apostle Paul says, 'Test everything. Hold on to the good' (1 Thessalonians 5:21). It's up to you to test by God's Word what I say, hold on to the good and reject the bad."

Such humility is refreshing, as is Alcorn's vision of the afterlife. It turns out that Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer might want to go to heaven after all.

Welcome Home

Pastor, seminary professor, speaker, and writer Randy Alcorn has written a monumental opus on heaven, humbly titled "Heaven." I often have taught that our views of heaven are too heavenly and not earthy enough. Alcorn's entire book communicates the same message.

His theme is continuity--all that is beautiful about life on earth continues in the new heaven and the new earth. All that is horrible about life on earth is healed in the new heaven and the new earth.

Notice the phrase "new heaven and new earth." When you do, consider Genesis 1:1, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." What is heaven? Some ethereal, non-physical place where spirit beings sit on clouds playing harps eon after eon after eon after boring eon? Hardly!

In Alcorn's biblically accurate hands, heaven becomes what God designed the Garden of Eden to be--a physical place of beauty, a relational place of harmony, and a purposeful place of meaningful, creative work without weeds.

Read Alcorn's "Heaven." It could and should change how you live on earth now. It could and should change how you view how you will live for all eternity. This is clearly the best book on heaven that I have ever read.

perspective

Perspective is what is often needed in our lives as we face difficult or challenging circumstances. Even if our lives are going great perspective is so helpful. Randy's book on Heaven does just that--gives perspective. By seeing the whole picture--at least as much as God has shown us at this point--we are encouraged to move forward in life. If we are facing tough times it is so helpful to know that present difficulties pale in comparison to what God has provided for us. If life is great, Randy's book reminds us to not try to find heaven in what we do, who we are, or in our material success.

As a seminary educated person, I was surprised at how little I knew about this subject. As the saying goes, I know what I know, but I don't know what I don't know. Randy's book showed me a lot that I don't know.

Clear But Not Simple

"There are fundamentally only two doctrines of salvation: that salvation is from God, and that salvation is from ourselves." This is pretty much Warfield's passion in this book. It is written by an intellectual zealot for the Christian faith and the Reformed Tradition. Warfield's erudition may mean that his modern readers get stretched a bit, but if you want to understand how the various denominational distinctive views on salvation are fundamentally to be understood, this book is where to start.

The book is based on a series of lectures, as with Kuyper's Stone Lectures on Calvinism, and are therefore oriented toward an audience inclined to systematic study. The language on the whole is accessible and not overly technical. The lecture format gives the material a "bite-sized" nature which allows for reading in segments rather than having to carry a theme through the whole. All in all, this book will become indispensable to anyone who cares about the doctrines of salvation and needs grounding for their own understanding or for presenting it to others.

The Plan of Salvation is a series of five lectures originally delivered by B.B. Warfield. The topics include: Differing Conceptions, Autosoterism, Sacredotalism, Universalism, and Calvinism.

If we believe in a God, we believe in the control by this God over the world he has created. We must then believe in the plan outlining all that God does, and also in His plan of salvation. What then is God's plan for salvation?

These lectures by Warfield present a logical and incisive examination of God's plan of salvation from sin. They provide a valuable tool to a systematic review of the biblical truths to God's plan of salvation.

Warfield identifies the vital questions linked with God's plan of salvation. He provides a detailed analysis of the most dangerous answers that men have created to those questions. He outlines the detriment to men's souls and the impact on God's glory which results from those errors.

Serious thought about choosing a plan for eternal (that is a long time) life

There are only two main options- either a plan set out by God or one scrambled together by man. Warfield shows that man's plan actually has lots of religious variations, but not are sufficient. God's plan as set forth in the Bible is clearly sufficient and will stand for eternity. Well worth the time to study the difference in these plans and hopefully trust the good news plan

Spiritual Abuse: Old Problem -- New Name

When thinking about the term "Spiritual Abuse," there is the temptation either to dismiss the term as psychobabble, or, going to the other extreme, imagine that any elder or spiritual leader that has looked at us with a funny expression has spiritually "abused us." June Hunt, in her book, is careful to explain what spiritual abuse is NOT: it is not, for instance, church discipline, or the firm holding to biblical principles. She is also careful to note that even though the term "spiritual abuse" may be a new one to some, the behavior it describes is one that goes back to the Garden of Eden, where Satan used a little truth, coupled with a lie, to influence the behavior of Eve, and then, Adam. While there were many godly leaders in Israel, and, later, in the Church, it is sadly true that there were shepherds described by such prophets as Ezekiel as those who devoured the flock rather than caring for them.

Our Lord was, as June points out, very strong in his condemnation of religious leaders who, though, apparently highly observant of the Mosaic law, had added laws of their own that had put a burden on the flock that was impossible to sustain. June gives a number of examples from her own counseling work of people taken advantage of by those in positions of spiritual leadership, rather than being cared for by them. She also notes examples of those who use very private interpretations of the Scripture to bolster some position that will advantage them personally, and put a burden on the person being counseled.

I believe it is good that June has included this subject in her writings, since, in a day in which extensive knowledge of the Bible is not something common to the population at large, and postmodern subjectivity has infected the thinking of many people, it is more than easy to be taken advantage of by religious leaders who may be in positions of leadership chiefly for their own benefit, rather than for the benefit of the flock. Others have written about the fallout of spiritual abuse, which, it seems, takes a toll on families and general well-being, but, as an introduction to the topic, June Hunt's book is very helpful, and a good place to start.

I need to add a couple of things: I should mention that one of the pillars, one might say, of the whole spiritual abuse syndrome, is legalism, and June Hunt has given a fine and thoughtful analysis of what might be involved in that. In addition, it should be added that Ms. Hunt has been very careful throughout to use the Holy Scriptures as the measuring rod: for example, rather than merely fastening on that which comprises abuse, she cites passages from the Bible that tell the attitudes and actions that SHOULD characterize shepherds who are caring for the Lord's flock.

In the commercial world, we say, "Let the buyer beware." I believe that anyone reading this little book would be more prepared than most to identify situations in which, not the buyer, but, the faithful, in this instance, might need to beware.

Although I received an advance electronic copy from Rose Publishing in return for a candid review, I had, some time before, obtained a copy, myself, and had read much or most of it.

How Hungry are you?

Many people will say that they want to live in the perfect will of God for their lives and live out their God given destiny but are they hungry? Are you hungry for God and His perfect ways for you?

To some people walking in the will of God would be impossible as they cannot hear the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking to them. These people first need to be able to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit before this book will make any sense to them. Sure, they can read this book and it might serve as an encouragement for them to seek to hear the Holy Spirit, but you won't be able to apply this book in any measurable way until you can hear the Holy Spirit speak to you.

This short book is rewarding and reinforces what I have written about in my books and confirms I am on the right track.
