Passover Necessity

Beautifully written in a conversational style. As a Jew and a life-long participant in Passover Seders, I learned a lot not only about seders but about the whole history of the holiday and it's historical relationship to Christianity. I believe the title should be...;What Everyone Needs to Know about Passover.

A thought provoking expansion of our Christian faith

Do not make the mistake of thinking this is a simple book of instruction designed to help Christians celebrate Passover. While those instructions are aptly provided, Rabbi Moffic masterfully opens a window into not only Biblical antiquity but into Jewish thought as well. To read this book is to get a glimpse down the long corridors of history and tradition that bind Jews and Christians together. There is a weight, a gravitas, to the Jewish understanding of not just Passover, but of all holidays (Holy days) that seems to have been diluted in more modern Christian experience. This would be an excellent read for a small group or Sunday school class as it stirs deeply in and amongst the roots of our Christian heritage in equal measure to its sampling of Jewish thought both ancient and contemporary. As you read attend to the questions that arise for this book stimulates thought as thoroughly as it instructs.

Get an insider's view on Passover from rabbi!

QUICK SUMMARY: An interesting view of Passover written by a non-Christian Jewish rabbi, for Christians.

BACKGROUND: I'm a Christian, but not of Jewish descent. The title of this book intrigued me because it was written from a Jewish rabbi for Christians. Christians give Christmas and the resurrection of Jesus wide recognition, but the Passover celebration is regarded as something only for Jewish people to commemorate. But why? This book points out that Passover can be commemorated by Christians, too.

The first page of the Introduction made clear that this wasn't written by a Christian author: "(Jesus' Passover meal) both drew on and re-created the events of the original Passover from Egypt, and it foreshadowed the world-changing events of Jesus' death." A Christian author wouldn't have written that sentence, because it wasn't the death of Jesus that changed the world. Many unjust deaths of been suffered by men and women through the ages. The world-changing events didn't begin until Jesus rose from the dead. It was the resurrection of Jesus that became world-changing.

WHAT I LIKED:

- I liked reading about the Passover from a Jewish rabbi who has the generational history going back to the original Passover celebration
- Although the author isn't a Christian, he is exceedingly respectful towards the belief system of Christians
- The book has a copy of a Haggadah that could be used for a family celebration of Passover
- The author explains how Jews today have replaced the paschal lamb by adding a third loaf of matzah in home commemorations of Passover (while Christians belief that Jesus was and is the Lamb of God who became the once-for-all sacrifice for sin -- a key difference in belief systems)
- I liked the author's personal reflections on his own Passover observances, which helped the reader better identify with the material
- I even made homemade matzah (easy!) after reading this book!

WHAT COULD BE BETTER:

- For a Christian, the book won't sufficiently and satisfactorily explain how Jesus is the once-for-all sacrificial lamb, and why the need for sacrifice for sins is no longer needed. To do that, the author himself would need to be a Christian.
- While the 2-ingredient matzah recipe (flour + water) is simple enough, it would be nice to know of a few other recipes that could be alternatively used in preparing matzah (though admittedly it's easy to do an Internet search for this info)
- Although the author discourages using a haggadah written especially for Christians, I think a Christ-focused haggadah would be absolutely appropriate. Why take the Lamb of God out of the Passover celebration - just to achieve authenticity of the celebration prior to Christ?

CONCLUSION: I recommend the book. I appreciate and applaud the author's goal of helping Christians obtain closeness with God through the Passover celebration. The Jewish heritage is extraordinary for many reasons, not the least of which is how Jews maintained their uniqueness through the ages, through persecution, and even without a country of their own. I like the "insiders view" that Rabbi Moffic provides in this book.

Very Practical and insightful!!

Doc Reid and his son Josh have compiled practical advice from their years of experience and the experience of many others. This is an invaluable resource of ideas and suggestions to help break the cycle of industrial youth ministry in the local church. This book is a call to go out and do ministry rather than administrate ministry. It's a great read with sound advice and Biblical foundation. Definitely a recommended book for all student ministers.

Student Ministers, READ GET OUT!

The Reid's team up to communicate a timely message to student ministers today that desperately needs to be heard: GET OUT! A student minister has to learn how to balance church and community as well as time spent in and out of the office. With the combination of Dr. Reid's academic excellence and Josh's practical experience, the best of both worlds collide to demonstrate the need of the hour in student (not youth...read the book) ministry. Having served in the trenches of student ministry at various churches, I am proud to endorse a book that spells out multiple ways of moving a ministry that is focused on what takes place in the four walls of a church to that which takes place outside those same walls! Some of the points of application are repetitive (such as feeding football teams and working with FCA) but perhaps that is the point. Maybe student ministers need to hear and READ these words over and over: GET OUT!

This book is a needed read on the present and future of youth ministry. Its time that people begin to see students as members of the body of Christ who are called just the same to "be" the church and be equipped as young people to make sacrificial decisions that glorify God. This book provides ample biblical and practical scenarios to help every youth minister begin to find little ways to turn event driven youth groups into missional centers of student discipleship. Excited for this book to push the next generation of youth ministers to a better and higher calling!

Even If You Disagree On Some Parts, It Is Extremely Thought-Provoking

In the interest of fairness, I want it to be known that Brazos Press did send me a review copy and I consider Jerry Walls a friend.

When I first heard about Jerry Walls, I thought he was a Catholic.

Not because I’m anti-Catholic! Not at all! With my philosophy, I’m a Thomist in my philosophy and a reader of people like G.K. Chesterton and Peter Kreeft. I’d just heard that he’d written a book about Purgatory and thought that was the case. I was surprised a bit when I found out he was a Protestant just as I am. I suspect with this book out, some people would be surprised to learn that this is a protestant view of the cosmic drama, as he describes it.

But yes, Walls is very much Protestant. Picking out his position I find is interesting. The book is not about soteriology per se, but yet his strong position against Calvinism is noted. It’s more really about eschatology, but he is one of those rare people that you can talk about his position in eschatology and you don’t mean the one we normally mean, such as what is the view on the rapture or the Olivet Discourse. This is all about our personal eschatology. What happens to us when we die.

Walls is familiar with this seeing as he wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on Hell, and I can hardly imagine what it would be like to have to give a defense of your view that Hell is a justifiable doctrine. While I think it is, it is not the kind of position I would want to do a Ph.D. dissertation on, yet Walls did so and it looks like he managed to defend Hell in light of some of the best antagonism, so he has something to say.

Yet this time, he rightly starts with Heaven. What is Heaven. How will it be for us? Walls rightly shows that we Christians need to spend more time thinking about this doctrine. I do want to jump ahead to something he says at the end of the book about Heaven answering the question of if we will be bored in Heaven. I do that because frankly, hearing the way some Christians talk about Heaven, I think I would be bored endlessly if their descriptions were right. Too often we make Heaven sound like an eternal church service. (Never mind other baloney claims such as we become angels when we die) There’s a reason skeptics of the faith say that Heaven would be boring and if they’re in Hell, they’ll be with their best friends anyway.

Walls gets most of his information on Heaven from Scripture going to Revelation 21. He does not take it in a literalistic sense, but he does have it that this is powerful language. God who exists in Trinity is the central focus of our eternity. He is the basis. He is the one that makes Heaven, Heaven and he is the one that makes eternity to be eternity. Our origins are found in Him and our purpose is found in Him. As has been said, if you have a “God of the Gaps” mentality, you’re not really dealing with the God of Scripture.

Wells shows that this is not just pie in the sky nonsense to escape reality, but is facing reality head on. It is saying that all of our hopes and desires do point to somewhere. He does this engaging with numerous arguments from the skeptical side, such as those of Russell or Nietzsche. Heaven is the best explanation that we have of all of the data that we have. Heaven makes sense of our world.

Yet what about Hell? Why is there Hell? Walls works to show that Hell is God giving people what they have wanted for so long and for this, he is largely in debt to Lewis, who aside from Scripture I would say is no doubt the most quoted author in the book. The gates of Hell are locked on the inside. The people in Hell are the ones who ultimately choose they want nothing to do with the God of Scripture. I would have liked to have seen something in this section that would have dealt more with the conditionalist position which is gaining popularity. Walls could have done that in another book, but it would have been good to see something here.

From there, we get into Purgatory. Now this is where some Protestants could be raising up their intellectual shields in defense and preparing to go on the attack. It is understandable, but I agree with Walls that we really need to interact with this idea and not just associate it with Catholics. Catholics believe a lot of right things too after all and just because an idea was misused is no reason to throw it out entirely.

I will not go into the details of Walls’s argument other than to say it focuses greatly on sanctification and while I cannot say I’m totally sold on it yet, and I do not think Walls would want me to change my mind entirely after reading just one book, I can say I do think Walls has benefited us greatly by starting the discussion and one aspect I will say I am sure he’d be pleased with, is that it does get me thinking more about sanctification and how seriously we need to take it.

Walls also deals with the problem of evil, including from this the speaking of Ivan from the Brothers Karamazov. While Dostoyevsky who wrote the book was a Christian, these are some of the most powerful quotes you’d hear advocating the problem of evil that he puts on the lips of his atheist character. Many atheists should learn to realize that we know the problem very well and I think Dostoyevsky places it more powerfully than any atheist writing I’ve read on it.

And yes, Walls has an answer. Of course, those interested in this need to get the book so they can see it.

We move on from there to morality and if there is a grounds for it in atheism. Walls of course argues that there isn’t and looks at some of the best theories out there attempting to explain this. Of course, if there is no ground for morality, then it’s quite difficult to raise up the problem of evil unless you want to say that it is an inconsistency for Christianity but when you abandon Christianity, lo and behold, there is nothing that is truly good or evil.

Finally, there’s a section that includes theories on the possibility of someone being reached even after they die. This is an interesting idea, but again, I’m not really sold on it. I wasn’t really sold on Walls’s approach to Hebrews 9, but I do think he’s certainly right to show that if Scripture does contradict any idea that we have, then we have to come to terms with the fact that that idea is wrong.

So while I do not agree with all that Walls says, I have to say this is an excellent book to get you thinking. It will put in you a desire for the state of Heaven and get you thinking seriously about sanctification and holiness. I do not doubt that even with that conclusion, that Walls will be pleased.

Thoughtful and provocative

Jerry Walls, who has published widely on Christianity’s teaching on the afterlife (though this is not a uniform concept), here seeks to articulate and defend a Protestant view of purgatory.

Early on, Walls makes a couple of astute points that are more commonly found in academic circles, but are still struggling to find a foothold in the church. For one, Walls comments that “popular writing about the afterlife is often sentimental, simplistic, and emotionally manipulative” (14). This is especially evidenced by the flood of journey-to-heaven books and movies to the Christian media market.

In his seven truths about heaven (based on Revelation 19–22), Walls dismisses the notion that heaven is an escape from earth. Redemption concerns more than just human souls—it concerns the entire cosmos (30). I have come around to this particular view of salvation, that God’s work of redemption in/through Christ entails the preparation of those who have been justified by faith in Christ for the fullest realization of the kingdom of God—the redemption of the created order as the dwelling place of God.

On these (and other more general points) I found Walls’ arguments agreeable. However, the main idea of the book is that the concept of purgatory is a defensible position for Protestants to hold and Walls spends the first third of the book turning the soil into which he will plant, sow, and reap a Protestant view of purgatory. Walls suggests that every theology needs a purgatory, not just that of the Roman Catholic tradition (93). The assumption underlying this idea is that prior to “entry” into heaven (which I take to simply the entry into God’s immediate presence) souls are still stained with sin, thus, they need to be fully purged. Walls makes clear that the very word purgatory bears the negative connotation that drew the ire of the Reformers, which was a justifiable response. However, Walls contends that the concept of purgatory had been perverted and is in fact a rather gracious work of God, not on men. Walls’ contention seems to be that the necessity of repentance requires some measure of purification between death and entrance into the heavenly kingdom.

As far as the biblical evidence for his position, well, there’s little discussion of that. Walls’ work is more philosophical in nature and does not deal adequately with the biblical data, which is its biggest weakness. Scripture is referred to, but only in such a way as to leave readers wanton for more substantive interaction with the sacred text. Walls is certainly shows himself adept in his interactions with theologians, philosophers, and writers (Dostoevsky, for example) on this issue, but if he had addressed the Scriptures more substantively this book would have been much stronger. As it is, it remains a largely philosophical enterprise, which is not necessarily a critique, but an observation as to its

Deep down I want to believe that there is some post-mortem opportunity for those who die without having surrendered to Christ to repent and enjoy life eternal, but I simply can’t get around the biblical data that suggests otherwise. I’ll admit that perhaps some texts could hint at the concept of purgatory as articulated by Walls, but I think the overwhelming testimony of the NT is that life is the time of opportunity and to miss it means separation from God. I want there to be another chance, but I can’t convince myself there is and Walls’ book, while thoughtful and well written, does not sway me in this matter. However, despite the fact I’m not persuaded by his arguments, Walls is a good writer and makes his case for purgatory well enough, just not strong enough to persuade me.

valuable discussions and addresses many practical concerns

A title like Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory: A Protestant View of the Cosmic Drama provokes interest. The idea of a Protestant purgatory is not novel (as is proven by Walls) but certainly uncommon to many ears. As an important element of Catholic theology rejected in the Reformation, a Protestant doctrine of purgatory might sound like an oxymoron. Hence the natural interest many will have in this title by theologian/philosophy Jerry L. Walls. HPP distills three academic books spanning a decade proving Wells is no novice on these issues (16). This is no half-baked publication from an emerging theologian. This level of understanding and writing makes HPP lucid, enjoyable, and provocative.

Despite some presumptions about the subject matter, HHP is not dry doctrinal reflection on an unimportant doctrine. While Walls does provide general introductions to the doctrines of heaven (chapter 1), hell (chapter 3), and purgatory (chapter 4), he also explains how these ideas undergird morality (chapter 7), hope (chapter 6), and even definitions of personhood (chapter 5). The existence of heaven and hell is immensely practical. Even Walls’ presentation of purgatory is practical in nature.

Acknowledging the Reformation’s departure from the Catholic, satisfaction view of purgatory (91-93), Walls presents a sanctification view of purgatory that is generally congruent with a Protestant idea of justification by faith alone (99-105). This concept of sanctifying (transforming) purgatory is obviously helpful to Walls’ theology as he seeks to explain how the worst of sinner (e.g. Hilter, child rapists, etc.) will be transformed alongside repentance before reaching heaven (149-153). However, Wall’s further exploration of repentance and even necessary sanctification in purgatory are limited to non-Reformed thought only (200-205). Since Walls’ arguments against Reformed thought are not able to be presented, some might dismiss the benefit of the discussion on purgatory and a grace beyond the grave.

This quick rejection of Reformed thought reveals the only negative of HHP, Scriptural exegesis is not common to Walls’ arguments. Apart from the occasional page of discussion (e.g. specifically instantaneous sanctification pp. 112-115), Scripturally deep arguments receive little attention. In fact, exegesis of C.S. Lewis is more common than that of Scripture. These discussions are deeply theological, but they move quickly and specifically into the realm of philosophy. This is where Walls shines. Walls is well acquainted with Christian and secular philosophies and is a well suited to explore these thoughts. He is able to introduce philosophies meant to undermine the doctrines of heaven and hell and also provide excellent Christian responses (chapter 2 and 7). These insights prove useful in the philosophical realm but also practically. One example is Wall’s handling of philosophical questions about heaven and “no more tears” (chapter 6). Many laymen readers will recognize some of their questions throughout HHP and benefit from Walls’ insights.

In conclusion, Heaven, Hell and Purgatory is worth a slow read. The investigation and dismantling of secular philosophies will benefit all Christians. The distinctions made concerning purgatory will benefit inquisitive and open Protestants. The dismissal of the Reformed positions will leave some readers dissatisfied, but should not hinder future discussions of purgatory. Walls has provided a valuable laymen oriented guidebook that contains valuable discussions and addresses many practical concerns.

More Interpretation Needed

I will honestly say that I expected more for the price in this book. I thought that this book was going to be the tool that helped to answer all of my questions about dreams, but unfortunately I was disappointed. The book has a great hook and is well written, but sadly I believe that it missed the mark. I wish many blessings for the author and I pray for the wellness of her ministry.

Short, sweet, inspiring

There are many reasons this isn't just one more book on prayer to wade through and check off your "To do" list, or that will remain on your "shelf" causing guilt each time you see it because you still haven't read it (and we all have plenty of those, right?). Because of its length, you can actually finish it and, by the time you finish the first page, you'll want to! It's not wordy or drawn out: the points are clear and the examples are applicable and inspiring. It's super engaging and inspiring, and to a broad audience. We have seven children between the ages of 5 and 16 and the only interruptions we had were of different ones, my husband and self included, saying, "Wow!" We finished it in just 3 of our morning devotion times, leaving time for prayer afterward. There's a section in the back for FAQs, which was super helpful. You won't be sorry you spent the time and at 99 cents, you won't sleep over the cost, either. ;)

Does prayer really "work"? Read this book and find out.

I recommend this book on prayer because it's about real life situations, real people, and real answers from God. There are no platitudes here, no easy (or imaginary) solutions to life's difficulties. As the author explains, "prayer is hard work," and she gives practical help in doing this hard work. She also provides plenty of examples of God's response. Sometimes profound, often humorous, this short book is a must-read for anyone interested in prayer. For sheer readability and helpfulness, I give it 4 stars.

I love it! Not a "guilt-producing" book on prayer

I love it! Not a "guilt-producing" book on prayer, but a very inspiring one! I love Julie's illustration of prayer (or any "discipline", really) of being like ice skating: reading all about it is good, but at some point you've got to start practicing it... and when you mess up, you get up and try again. Time for me to get up and try again! So many encouraging stories to turn our eyes back to a really amazing God!

About the Author
Robert Noland began his writing career as a songwriter in 1983, then spent the next 10 years as a touring musician and producer, penning lyrics for artists such as Glen Campbell, Babbie Mason, and Gabriel. He wrote his first series of Bible studies in 1988 and in 1991 wrote his first Christian devotional book for a para church ministry. Noland has since authored over 50 titles spanning across children, youth, and adult audiences. In 1996, he wrote a Christian follow-up booklet entitled Life Change, which to date has sold over one million copies. In 2011, Noland released his first book titled The Knight's Code and in 2012 released 3SG, a Men's Small Group Manual. He blogs regularly at theknightscode.com. Since 2011, Noland has been a freelance writer and author for faith-based organizations, ministries, and Christian publishers. A book co-authored with Randy Frazee, entitled Think, Act, Believe Like Jesus, released in December 2014. Regardless of the target audience or mode of delivery via paper or digital, Robert writes what he calls, practical application of Biblical truth. He lives in Franklin, TN with his wife of 30 years and has two adult sons.

Helps to define the struggle between the Cultural Church and the Authentic Church in American society today.

This book greatly helped me to put words to a frustration I have had in ministry for many years. I have always struggled with understanding why so few church members truly desire to know and learn the deeper truths in the Bible regarding all of the teachings of the Bible. I have understood that there will always be some church members who are not Christians. But many Christians struggle making the commitment to grow spiritually. Dr. Coy, in great detail, describes how this has happened to our churches today and how we will be marginalized more and more by the changing society in which we live. He encourages us to see the blessings of God as we move away from Cultural Church and move back to being the Authentic church in the margins of our society. I greatly encourage all pastors and lay leaders to take the time to read this book.

Dr. Coy's book, like any good book, also leads to further questions as to the application of what has been learned in the given and unique context in which we serve. How will the individual churches respond to this marginalization? How does the rural context and the metro context differ in its application of this knowledge? How will we, as church leaders, enlist our members, especially our leaders, to understand this transition and as a result lead to the revitalization of Biblical churches in the place of Cultural Churches that are fading and dying each day?

I recommend this book to any church leader who is serious about seeing their church grow and excel in the coming days of marginalization in American society in which we live and serve.

There is a statement in the Bible in the Old ...

There is a statement in the Bible in the Old Testament book of Esther where Queen Esther is told by her cousin Mordecai about her being in the position of Queen that she has been placed in that position "for such a time as this." A unique moment whereby God would use her to rescue His people. I believe that statement can be used of this book by Terry Coy. The church in America is in a unique position today, still the hope of the world because of the ministry of proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and yet finding itself more and more pushed to the margins of society and culture. Less influence in the public square but filled with the power to change the public square. This book helps us see a new phase of the church for approaching the future and re-learning how to have an impact on our country, even if from the margins. A worthwhile, even necessary read!

Banana Split

Sadie Hoffmiller has survived eighteen months of nonstop adventures filled with murder, deceit, and danger. She could really use some rest—and maybe even some time to heal—relaxing in the tropical paradise of Kaua'i. However, palm trees and sunshine are not as effective a medication as Sadie had hoped. And when she finds herself entangled—literally—with a dead body, she is forced to face the compounding fears and anxieties that are making her life so difficult to live.

Her determination to stay out of danger and to focus on overcoming her anxieties soon takes a backseat when she meets eleven-year-old Charlie, the son of the woman whose body she discovered near Anahola Beach. Charlies has some questions of his own about what happened to his mother, and he is convinced that only Sadie can help him. If only Sadie were as confident in her abilities as Charlie is.

With the help of her best friend and a local social worker, Sadie dives into another mystery with the hope that, at the end, she'll be able to find the peace and closure that has eluded her.

Tres Leches Cupcakes

Sadie Hoffmiller has relocated from Colorado to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is starting a new job as an informant for the Bureau of Land Management on an archeological site. the sun and dirt blocks her initial excitement about the job, but she makes the best of is, using her baking prowess to help her gather background information on her fellow "dirt geeks." Being in the middle of nowhere and digging up artifacts from hundreds of years ago is supposed to keep Sadie out of trouble—until recent burials are found on the ancient site.

Before Sadie knows it, she's arrested for starting a bar fight, a new friend is missing, and she's worn out her welcome in Santa Fe in more ways than one. But when a trip to the annual hot air balloon fiesta in Albuquerque leads to even more danger, she begins to wonder if she'll ever be safe...from herself.

Baked Alaska

Sadie Hoffmiller is looking forward to an entire week cruising the Alaskan wilderness with her two grown children, Shawn and Breanna, and her boyfriend, Pete. Not only will they all have the chance to get to know one another better, but Sadie will finally be able to help Breanna plan her upcoming wedding. They board the ship with high expectations of a well-deserved vacation.

And except for the mysterious woman on the ship that Shawn seems to know but will not discuss, and the fact that Breanna's future mother-in-law has already hijacked the wedding plans, and the unexpected death of a passenger in the middle of the buffet line, Sadie's vacation would have been perfect.

As it is, Sadie will need all her investigative skills to navigate the deep waters of the mystery that is soon swirling around her family. Amid her growing fears for the future, Sadie must also come to terms with the fact that her role in the lives of her children is changing and that even the best laid plans can go awry when a secret gets thrown into the mix.
