Chosen for Paradise: Reframing Election in Romans 9-11, by John Crowder

The doctrine of election has confused theologians for centuries like a dog chasing it’s own tail. Does God choose us, or do we choose God?

Some believe that our own striving human willpower must somehow conjure up and maintain our own salvation. But how can we ever be certain that we have believed deep enough? Is it really up to us to save ourselves? To depend on my own decision for God?

Others believe salvation is God’s sovereign business from start to finish. But what about those who don’t believe? Did God choose some to fry in their own fat forever in Hell?

What if God’s predestination is not about choosing some for bliss and others for destruction? Following the lead of the great theologian Karl Barth, John Crowder explores the volatile passages of Romans 9-11 to shed new light on the debated topic of election.

God is not choosing one human over another. Jesus Christ is the chosen, elected man on behalf of all humanity. And you are fully included in Him.

John's shortest book ever aims to cheer up theology's biggest problem ever! Written as a companion book to Cosmos Reborn

Expanding Predestination Horizons
By Amazon Customer
Why give a book 4 stars for content I don't fully agree with? Because I appreciate the heart and the writing. It is evident that John Crowder invested a lot into this passionate work. He respectfully treats Calvinism and Arminianism. Many of the points (which are clear and easy to follow) make a lot of sense.
I do find that Romans (the basis of this book alongside Karl Barth's theology) is not presented in a way that I personally find it should be presented through an Exegetical reading. My interpretation of the author's writing (and I could be mistaken) is that Roman's has a "universal" theme and that Paul as the author of Romans was appealing to both Jews & Gentiles equally or at the very least, a strong Jewish audience. But some things I would point out wherein lies my disagreement with the foundation of the text... and I do stress foundation because I agree with many of the conclusions. Paul, was truly writing to what was probably a mostly Gentile crowd through my estimation (and as always... I could be wrong). It even says in Romans 9 "For I could wish that I myself were accursed - cut off from Christ - for the sake of MY PEOPLE, MY fellow COUNTRYMEN, who are Israelites. To THEM belong the adoption as sons, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the temple worship, and the promises" (which to me is clear he is talking about a his history to a group who does not have the same heritage). Our best historical guess for Romans is that it was written between 54 & 56 A.D. But Claudius expelled the Roman Jews in 49 A.D. So, even though many Jews could have returned to the Roman Christian gatherings or even slipped through the cracks of their expelling, the parts of the book where John Crowder is speaking of inclusion/exclusion, I still think it is valuable to consider the audience rather than what this book claims Paul is appealing to Jewish thinking. If Paul was primarily focused on a Jewish mindset rather than a Roman mindset, the letter to the Roman churches would look a lot different in my opinion, maybe even more like the book of Hebrews. This is not to say that the Romans weren't familiar with Jewish thinking as they were probably proselytized prior to exile by church leaders who were once Jewish but had turned to other cities to reside in after the exile.
Why does all of that matter? It matters because the meaning of Romans is somewhat tied to the audience of Romans. But the message that Christ did die for all and that we are elected in Him is one that I can stand behind. And that, is why I like this book. I would encourage you to consider giving this a book a try to widen your "predestination" horizons :)

Jesus Died as Humanity
By Christopher R. Wilson
He died as humanity. That first bit at the opening of the book reminds me of another book that begins “Its all about God” and went on to sell millions and translated in many languages. Hmmmm.

The 5 page Introduction by Dr. Eric Wilding summarizing Karl Barth is worth the price of admission alone.

And then read on for an amazing fleshing out of the election of all in Jesus Christ. Crowder takes the idea of effortlessness to a whole other level as he presents this beautiful gospel of mans inclusion. We see that the playing field of salvation is completely leveled by all being excluded so that Jesus who died as humanity could include us all. He presents the Arminianist and Calvinist views briefly summarizing each camp and then points out their strengths and flaws throughout the book as they relate to the finished work of the cross. I love this little statement towards the end of the book, “Let us not be dogmatic where the scriptures offer a double-sided coin of mystery.”

Over the years Crowder has been accused of many things and being a universalist is one of them. If your tidy whities have gotten into a bind over this one John pretty clearly tells all where he is and isn’t.

“Your either in Him experiencing the joys of your resurrection, or you’re in Him demanding a reprobation He has already bore on your behalf - fighting against the bottomless pit of love. The fiery pleasure of the love you reject is inescapable and becomes heaping coals on your head." Crowder holds our hand as we travel through this theological mine field of Romans 9-11. Good clarity on the Potter, Jacob and Esau, and Pharaoh as well as Israel. I love how John always brings it back to Jesus. Of course the passages are inherently doing that but in our double sided theologies we have woven in so much humanism, logic, and religion. Crowder sifts the minefield and what we see is Jesus past, present, and future in this bliss of election.

The book draws richly from Karl Barth, Fr. Robert Capon, Martin Luther, T.F. Torrance, and others.

Lots to chew on and roll around in your mouth. I say get the book and a few extra copies. Find some friends with cigars and then dive in for a long afternoon of smiles, hair pulling, and fun. You wont not get through this little gem without popping out the other side with an opinion one way or another. Can you handle about 75 pages of theology and fun...........well....can you?

I began with the first part of the book and so here is the final line in the book “You’ve been elected for the unfathomable destiny of enjoying him forever” Beautiful. If you enjoyed this book or not come to Cana 2015 where you can jump into the deep end of theology and the mysteries of Christ with other lovers of Jesus. John will surely chat this book up.

Great study
By esse
This is so utterly refreshing as it makes election both clear and simple! This book was apparently born out from "Cosmos Reborn," and it serves well as a fast read and excellent extension of the former. I am really thankful for both books and all the minds that contributed to them.

At times redundant, Crowder explains why: "we have to go slow," not because election was ever meant to be a complicated subject, but because we're de-threading a complicated mesh of misunderstanding now many hundreds of years old. "Chosen" does more than reframe election but, in so doing, also tweaks the brain just enough to wrench you out of any ol' time traditional thinking that has made us dull of hearing or just confused. As much as I learned about election, I also learned about exegesis itself, and about the overall wonderfulness of our very able Savior.
