Dealing with Worry

Are you a worrier?
I think all of us have things that keep us up at night, at least from time to time. Hopefully, those things don’t overwhelm us and cause us to worry all the time. Worry is unhealthy. It leads to stress and causes anxiety, exhaustion, and a host of other health problems.
Tired (literally) of living with constant worry, Jane Rubietta finally realized and accepted that God provides freedom from worry. She shares her experiences with readers in Worry Less So You Can Live More: Surprising, Simple Ways to Feel More Peace, Joy, and Energy.
Jane’s writing style is like sitting down with a friend. Rather than reading like a self-help book, Worry Less So you Can Live More is written in a beautiful prose style as Jane shares her life lessons with readers. Her stories are compelling and relatable, and the accompanying questions and journal prompts provide tools for really meditating on the material and getting the most out of the book. Each chapter concludes with a Votum and Benedictus–a conversation with God. These poetic verses are worth revisiting over and over again.
The struggles Jane writes about and the examples she shares serve to show how God works in our lives. In one chapter, she talks about how being on a tight budget caused her to deprive herself of what she considers trivial extravagances. A red pair of shoes caused her to step out of her comfort zone and treat herself, and after needless worry, she realizes how much God delights in our delight:
". . . you’d think I was raised in the Great Depression, where it cost too much to smile. I worry; I work. And part of my soul withers away. In the deepest of places, I knew this struggle wasn’t about red shoes (p. 41)."
It was touching to read how the red shoes symbolized so much more in her life, and the places they have taken her:
"Right there, on a boulder along the shore of Lake Erie, a group of young foxes played peek-a-boo with me. I was entranced. No one else in the world saw this spectacle. God and I were the only audience. The morning play of these kits, safe in their burrow from predators, spoke to my soul in ways only God would understand, and love. That God cared enough to allow me to see that joyful play moves me. Without the red shoes, I’d have stayed in my room and worked before breakfast, missing a significant encounter with Jesus (p. 46)."

Worry Less so you can Live More

This title just leapt out at me! When scrolling through the list of books to choose for my next review, I thought, “I’ll read this and pass it on to my friends: Worrier A, Panic Attack Freak B, and Hypochondriac C”. And before you judge me, I don’t normally categorize my dear friends as such. It’s just so easy to point fingers at the people in our lives who could learn (insert goal of book fix here), isn't it? And yet, not so surprisingly, as I began to read, I realized that I could use some focus as well. Imagine that!
Author Jane Rubietta wrote a book that not only gives practical advice on how to worry less, but she also takes instances from her own life, which gives us readers relatability and points us in the ONLY direction that can take away our worry. It was so refreshing to see a woman whose life is immersed in women’s ministry share her fears and worries amidst conferences and personal interactions. Gone was the facade that doing the Lord’s work eliminates stress and worry. Jane made it clear that it is very much a part of her life, and that she has a few ways to deal with anxiety.
Jane shares about the need to empathize with others, and how isolation takes away from our ability to heal and cope with some of life’s struggles. Now, to give away all of the details of her solutions would take away the reason to pick this book up for yourself, so I will not divulge any further. But I will share that the Lord indeed plays a huge part in recovery, and that reminding ourselves that it is okay to play, to have imagination, to go back to a time in our lives when time didn’t exist and childlike nature was acceptable…those moments can definitely relax and refresh you. So often, I was transported to Jane’s visual destinations by her ornate descriptions. I felt like I was in a field with wildflowers all around, and seeing lightning bugs at nighttime. I genuinely saw her desire to go to (and her desire to take us to) the places where we were allowed to give ourselves permission to just be still. As adults, we don’t do that. And we certainly need to.
Her book is a fast read, with wonderful questions. She also includes Votums and a Benedictus for the end of each chapter. My recommendation: Grab a cup of hot, fresh coffee, a warm blanket, and curl up in your favorite reading spot with your Bible, and begin this journey with Jane. You won’t be disappointed. And you’ll also feel as if you’ve made a new friend, one who “gets” you and will continue to pray for you. :)

Great Book With Great Godly Advice

Worrying is one of the worst things we can do. It never accomplishes anything. I consider myself a "worry-er". It is one of my many faults. But, I am trying to get better at trusting God with every part of my life. Jane Rubietta wrote a new book titled Worry Less So You Can Live More. I jumped on the opportunity to review this darling little book.
Having peace in the midst of trials is such a hard concept to grasp. To trust God no matter your circumstances is a wonderful feeling. Those who have accomplished this have such a blessing. I hope to one day be able to not worry about every little thing in life.
This book is such a sweet treasure filled with encouragement, stories, and God's Holy Word. Jane Rubietta is a critically acclaimed author of fifteen books, including Grace Points and Quiet Places. She travels and speaks at many women's events, churches, and parenting groups. She writes regularly for indeed, MOMSense, Fullfill, Just Between Us, and many other magazines and websites. I read this book expecting the normal "this is what the bible says", "do this, not that", "stop worrying...". I was pleasantly surprised to find that Jane Rubietta sprinkled Worry Less So You Can Live More with so much love and delight. She recommends keeping a journal throughout your worrying less journey so you can see your progress. Her stories are funny and charming yet realistic.
I recommend this book to anyone who worries or knows someone who worries a lot. It is helpful in that she gives simple advice on how to feel more at peace and have more joy and energy.
