missing something

I found Man of God by Charles Stanley to be a little lacking...

Ok. I know that all of those Charles Stanley fans out there are probably trying to figure out my address so they can go throw eggs at my house. Please don't misunderstand me. I love Charles Stanley as well. I first began to understand many of the things to do with God while listening to his voice on cassette while I was working third shift janitorial at a mall. I got a glimpse at what a good television preacher could be like while watching him wave that giant, floppy, heavily used Bible. I could tell there was a passion for this Great God that we serve when I heard his voice. This isn't an anti-Charles Stanley sort of review. All I am saying is that I found it a bit lacking.

Now, it was full, chock-full of excellent, godly advice. Bits of wisdom from years in the ministry. Every bit of it was definitely valuable, and I wouldn't have a problem recommending it to any young father or young husband. I especially enjoyed the second chapter where he broke down the elements of a "man of steel" and a "man of velvet". A true man of God is a combination of these two, pictured in the man Jesus.

But I still found it lacking.

Scripture felt a bit sparse... Definitely not absent, just sparse. It might be because I have grown accustomed to books that break down passages of scripture and tie these daily realities and applications back into the grander reality of the great narrative of God and the gospel. I kept waiting for that, but it never came.

He highlighted all of the important realities to being God's man. Most importantly the need for true salvation as the basis for true manhood was driven home near the conclusion of the book. But much of the book was a bit more like listening to a godly grandfather give advice. (Which definitely not a bad thing. Good godly advice from grandfathers is invaluable.) The voice talent on this book added to the grandfatherly feel. He sounded like a wise-old-guru of a gentleman.

Was it a good book? Yes. Did it leave me wanting more? Yes, but not more of the book, more of what wasn't in the book.

A Good Book for a Struggling Father or Husband

There are a number of positive qualities to Charles Stanley's new book Man of God: Leading Your Family by Allowing God to Lead You. Perhaps one of the most notable traits is how he is able to pick a topic, or metaphor, and carry it through an entire chapter. This gives his book a continuity that is attractive to most men. For example, in his chapter "Man of Steel and Velvet" Stanley explores how a man should be like steel in the first half of the chapter and like velvet in the second half. Additionally, Stanley offers a great deal of scriptural support and incorporates it into what he is saying smoothly and with practiced ease. This provides the Christian reader with a constant confirmation that what is being said is biblical and not simply rehashed secular thought presented by a well-known pastor.

Another striking element of Stanley's writing is that he asks the reader questions. This not only improves the tone of the writing, making it sound more like a discussion than a lecture, but helps men think introspectively about the various issues Stanley is addressing. This is paralleled by Stanley's simple point-by-point breakdown followed by a list of suggestions and/or examples for the reader to think about. This highly organized, interactive style will prove attractive to most male readers. Finally, Stanley presents himself as a fallible father and husband. This honest, realistic approach should engender trust and defuse resistance in his readers.

There are a few elements however that could be points of frustration in this book. First, the narrator seems to announce, or perform, more than he shares with the reader. This seems to run contrary to the natural, conversational tone that Stanley was going for. Furthermore, while the structure is advantageous to the novice reader, it can come off as a little formulaic to the more experienced reader. By the end of the book, I was becoming nostalgic for the days of Confronting Casual Christianity and other books by Stanley that were hard hitting and provocative but every bit as helpful and biblical as this book.

In the end, this is a good book for struggling husbands and fathers. There are also the occasional points of thought for the more successful father. Moreover, I would suggest this book to those people in the church who are counseling men and families but lack a formal education. This is an excellent starting point and could prove a good resource for men before their first counseling session. This is a good book even if it doesn't live up to Stanley's work from the 80s and the 90s.

If it wasn't for us some men would starve...

I am constantly amazed with how many men/guys don't have a clue. As I get older though I realize that because of depravity and the degradation of our society (2 Timothy 3), I really should not be surprised when a guy says to me, "I am helpless at home, work gives me purpose and meaning...I don't know how to lead except at work (actual recent conversation)." We live in a wake of misguided men a recent author stated. We are also in a culture the reminds men how far we fall short on a regular basis. To the rescue, Charles Stanley takes this tender topic with much wisdom and experience, fills it with heavy application on how to lead your family and what it means to allow God to lead you.

I have been a Charles Stanley listener for many years (and to his son, Andy, as well). There is definitely an evidence of God's grace upon the men of that family! Both have differing gifts and both passionate for Christ! The narrator especially brought out the material versus being distracted by the audio. This topic is very interesting to me as I realize how far I have to go in my daily worship and missional work. It challenged me to learn about manhood from Christ's example. I was inspired be both velvet and steel and I was enlightened about being more sensitive and compassionate to others in the circles of my life. Although I did have to listen 2x in its entirety, I was challenge to re-think through the material with the excellent questions sprinkled throughout the material.

Charles Stanley does hold my attention, but I did giggle a few times about the dichotomous difference between what Andy is talking about and the `many lists' and `10 steps to...' or `5 ways to...' that is one of the differences between their styles, of which one could say was presented in a cohesive and yet appealing manner. I just remember my days of countless hours of Charles Stanley sermon audios in the late nights over 10yrs ago. I have also watched him a few times on Christian TV channels, and of course watching him from afar through his public divorce and seeing how his life DID reflect repentance, this is an apt fruit of that work. I was pleased to listen more to the what the bible had to say versus psychobabble which is so prevalent in much church teaching today. Other reviewers said they thought that scripture was sparse, but I would `push back' on that as I hear it saturated with creation-fall-redemption-restoration narratives and references. Sometimes there is a temptation when reading/listening to Christian works (done it myself) to skim/skip over the scripture while our heart says arrogantly, `yeah I already know that' and dismiss it as basic and preliminary. If you really need chunks of scripture in a book other than the Bible (which your probably not reading either), then I don't know how to answer that about this work, because there was much scripture to meditate on which is also missing in so much of today's `How-To' works. I would recommend this to ANY man at any stage of life even non-believer's (because hark... Charles says that none of this ...the book... is possible without the gospel and there is a clear presentation of such) would benefit from this audio. I am also glad this is not another `beating up on men' work, which is the other extreme to avoid as well.

Great for the price

I am leaving a 4-star, based on the price I paid for the Bible. I went to a few book stores, and found that a nice Bible would cost me $40 and up! That's ridiculous! So anyways, found this one, for less than $20, here on Amazon, and I'm happy with it. The paper used is very thick, which is unusual for a Bible. Not sure yet, if I like that or not. I think I prefer the traditional thin paper pages, as they turn and lay more nicely. Also the print is crazy small, but that's fine for me, as my sight is good. This Bible is your average standard size. Not huge, not compact. I hope to have it for years to come!

I bought this for my daughter for her birthday and she absolutely loves it and so do I! I want one now too! I love the thick leather like material it is binded with and the thick not cheap pages! Also a nice touch I absolutely loved about this beautiful bible was that silver color on the edge of the bible/pages... Thanks for such an amazing affordable product!

If you want to be moved then read this book, 2 Words summarizes this book, 1 Awakening, 2 Revival. There must be an Awakening in our private lives and churches so we can experience Revival. Too many outside the walls of our churches are hurting and don't know how to cope with it, scripture tells us we have that hope residing in us, many of us are not called to travel abroad to take the Gospel, we have a mission field just outside our front door. Let us have an Awakening in our own lives so we can experience a personal Revival, who knows how many can be won to Christ.

Peter Greer (www.peterkgreer.com) is president and CEO of HOPE International, a global nonprofit focused on addressing both physical and spiritual poverty through microfinance. He has a master's degree in public policy from Harvard's Kennedy School. Peter speaks regularly to large audiences, including at conferences like Catalyst and Passion. Peter lives with his wife and three children in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

NOT A NEW CRISIS

A little more than a decade ago, I devoted two columns in WORLD magazine to an exploration of why "institutions and organizations of all kinds regularly drift from the right to the left, from orthodoxy to heterodoxy, from faithfulness to unfaithfulness, from discipline to permissiveness" ([...]).

Not then, and not even now, do I pretend to have all the answers to that question. But I am enormously grateful to Peter Greer and Chris Horst for picking up that theme and pressing it so energetically into the consciousness of those responsible for maintaining the mission of hundreds of evan¬gelical non-profit entities. Their new book, Mission Drift, is specific, it is accurate, it is charitable and kind-spirited, and it is ultimately helpful to anyone who will take a couple of hours to digest it. This should be high priority reading for organiza¬tional board members, administrators, and mid-level managers throughout God's kingdom.

Perfect for Board Members

As a board member of a local Christian non-profit, I was amazed at how spot-on the challenges outlined in this book are when it comes to keeping an organization on mission. It's a sobering call to action for leaders of any business or group, but certainly valuable for non-profit staff & board members. This book has changed the way I think about my role as a donor and board member and it should be read by every person with a desire to see the organizations they love most stay mission true.

A book that needed to be written . . .

I've spent a lifetime exposed to faith-based non-profit work and have seen myself that good intentions are inadequate when it comes to staying mission true. The litter of drifted individuals and organizations
are more the norm than the exception. This book exposes causes and cures and is a must read for anyone who admits to this potential drift in themselves and their organization and desires to do something concrete about it. By the end of my reading I had accumulated a sizable list of people who I knew HAD to read it.

GRACE: Experience it again ... for the first time!

Former spiritual skeptic and atheist, Lee Strobel, has been providing life-giving information in his books for many years. They answered the intellectual questions about faith that our generation is asking. I, and countless others, have benefited greatly.

This newest addition to Strobel's New York Times bestselling "THE CASE FOR ..." series, however, is different and exciting -- and it speaks to a deeper need. This one touches the heart.

With disarming vulnerability and, at times, jolting detail, Strobel describes his own long journey toward grace, and he weaves it around a variety of jaw-dropping stories of God's supernatural intervention in the lives of other people, some of whom could have lived next door, and some who lived on the other side of the world.

The Beauty of Grace

Grace is probably the most misunderstood word because it is can be difficult to grasp the full beauty of grace in action. Grace can be turned into cheap grace, where we trample on what Christ did for us by taking sin lightly or take the grace from God but do not extend it to others. In turn, this can make us more legalist and hypocritical. In the Case of Grace, we share in the stories of a handful of people that have experienced and know the power of grace. Put in a book for us to stimulate our thinking about grace and how it can change our relationships with God and others.

The stories reflect lives changed by grace. They will leave you humbled and hungry for grace that only God can give in the Son. Each chapter is a testimony starting with Lee Strobel and the relationship with his family. The breakdown of the role of his father in his life was without grace. It is something we don’t think about, but our children need to know a healthy grace that loves and is disciplined. That encourages and gives children strength to go out in the world.

Chapter two is the orphan. It starts with JI Packer quote of “Our understanding of Christianity cannot be better than our grasp of adoption…of all the gifts of grace, adoption is the highest.” Adoption is being chosen when we are at our worst. The story of Stephanie Fast whose mother abandoned her in Korea when she was a toddler is heartbreaking. Her story is profound, ugly, and beautiful. Do you feel abandoned? Maybe not from your parents such as Stephanie’s’ story but maybe you can be an orphan of the heart. I love that statement. I think we all are until we bring our hearts to the one who we were created for. Love the Lord you God with all your heart, soul and mind. My God is an all-consuming fire.

Chapter 3-the addict. Grace is not tamed. Jud’s story of an addict turned pastor in Sin City Las Vegas. Ministering to those that he once was and sharing the grace that changed him. What Jud came to realize that it is not in perfection, or what we do or don’t do and the expectations we have of others and what we need from them, but expectations of God and his grace. In order to have those expectations, we need to know who God is and what he is not. Do we understand redemption?

Chapter 4 –the Professor-starting the chapter with a quote from Bono..”I’m holding out for grace. I’m holding out that Jesus took my sins onto the cross, because I know who I am, and I hope I don’t have to depend on my own religiosity.” Craig Hazen-the intellect with everything. Just like the young rich ruler that asked Jesus how might I be saved? When you have everything, how do you know you need grace? Hanzen in his journey came to realize that it is only in understanding the effects of sin. To understand the concept of grace, you really need to understand sin. The problem is we have lost the concept of sin.

Chapter 5-The executioner-From the Killings fields of Cambodia to the Harvest of Cambodia; Christopher LaPel family being torn apart, killed and imprisoned. LaPel story is where the boundaries of Grace lie. Where does LaPel strength lie? How LaPel came to Christ and how he came face to face with his executioner. How forgiveness became necessary and not just some to do or say. LaPel came to realize that if God is who he says he is, than grace itself is the character and attribute of God. It cannot be anything else.

Chapter 6-the Homeless-Cody Huff was the Prodigal Son. Digging out of the trash and coming to realization that he has hit rock bottom. How do you climb out of the pit? How many times do we look at people as problems needing to be solved instead of people that need to be loved? How often do I hoard grace?

Chapter 7-the Pastor..Brad Mitchell who had a thriving ministry, a great marriage and now stands before his congregation asking for forgiveness for his infidelity. His story is also his wife story as she had to come to a place of forgiveness and the realization that you do not get to choose what you can and cannot forgive. That forgiveness is a decision before it’s an emotion. How many times do we make our life-changing decisions based on our emotions? Brad’s wife Heidi put herself with Christ and his sufferings. She denied her “rights” and went thru the process of forgiveness while Brad went thru the process of repentance. In order for Brad to begin, he had to take full responsibility for his sin. No blame anywhere else. It is only thru full responsibility we can begin the healing and have true repentance. By going in front of the church with his full responsibility of sin, the sin died. There could be no gossip or speculation. This is church discipline and this is how the church grows healthy and strong. Brad fought the shame of what he did with what Christ did on his behalf. He says “But when I take on shame, then I’m saying that I’m not really purified, that the cross was a failure that Jesus’s sacrifice for me was lacking.

Chapter 8-The Prodigal. It opens up with this quote from Drew Dyck…”The Gateway to Grace is Repentance. We can’t truly appreciate God’s grace until we glimpse his greatness. We won’t be lifted by his love until we’re humbled by his holiness. This is the story of Luis Palau son Andrew. Luis Palau is well-known world-wide evangelist. It is a great reminder that our children need to establish their own faith and not the faith of their parents no matter how strong the faith of those parents are. Andrew had built his own kingdom of pleasure where he reigned supreme. He did not want God to control his life wholly. Andrew’s attempt to draw near to God came to the realization what it meant for God to control all areas of his life. We all struggle with this and if we don’t know this struggle, chances are we don’t care or acknowledge God.

Chapter 9-Empty Hands – this chapter opens with this quote...”When all seems lost, God’s grace is enough. When all seems lost, God’s grace is enough. God does not give a gift inferior to Himself” Augustine. This is Lee Strobel story when he found himself in a health crisis. The health crisis turned into an identity crisis. Our identity is tied to so many things…what we do, who we are, our desires. All this is our way of controlling our life when in reality we have no control.

I don’t like writing a long review; however, I wanted to share what these lives, these real people, these hurts, tell us about grace. Grace is a gift. Open it today. Share it with someone and Praise God for it.

Good addition to Strobel's, "The Case For" series

In this latest book of his “The Case For” series author Lee Strobel will take us on a tour of God’s Grace by using some scripture but mostly by interviewing several people and allowing us to read their testimonies in this book.

As I started to read I wondered how Strobel would deal with the topic of Grace, I should have known it would be through interviews and then sharing those interviews with the reader. There was not a masterful job of delving into scripture and expositing it to teach about Grace, instead it was a masterful job of journalism / interviewing of people and sharing their case studies that brought us to the truth that God’s Grace is unlimited and available for everyone.

After the first couple of interviews I wondered if Strobel was only going to share with us the “Fantastic” testimonies, those show stoppers that have all the sin and wickedness that we come to expect from a heart stopping testimony.

There is the story of the “Orphan” mixed race Korean child who is abandoned on the streets and left to die, but this child struggles through life until being eventually adopted by Missionaries.

There is the story of the “Addict” who goes from one drunken / drug influence experience to the next and should have died many times over, only to eventually come to Christ.

Those testimonies are good, but I wondered if he would ever touch on the Grace extended to even the “good” kids, those who were not rebellious or evil, but lead normal lives. Well, the very next chapter hit that one out of the park. We meet the College Professor who was the perfect poster child for the Best Student award in every school and the Best Child award from every parent. But that wasn’t enough, he still needed Jesus.

So, in all of these cases plus the five others, including Strobel’s, we are faced with how God’s Grace is sufficient to bring to salvation people who are alienated from God.

So, this is not a major theological study, but instead a great read about the testimonies of people who have hit rock bottom (yes, even the perfect child) and there they found God waiting for them to just acknowledge their sinfulness and their need for Grace.

Finally, there is a discussion guide in the back of the book to help your book club read the chapters and then have some things to talk about in relationship to each of the testimonies shared. It is well written and will be a good discussion guide for any group.

Biblically Rooted Assurance-A Soul's Anchor

Are doubt and fears the lot of all believers in this life? To doubt the work of God's Spirit in us is sinful,but every Christian deals with remaining sin and corruption until the end of their earthly course.Thus there will be struggles with doubt,fear and even accurate assessing the true state of their standing before the Lord at times.The degree and frequency will differ with the individual due to a number of various factors-p.61"The assurance that God's people have of their state of grace is not so high and full that it excludes all doubt,for there is nothing perfect in us this life...".One of the reasons why no believer is immune from all doubt(and it will affect their assurance at times)is because it-"is grievously assaulted by Satan...and by the unbelief of our own hearts."

What is the importance of having assurance of our salvation? 'Assurance breeds spiritual strength'.Fear and doubt foster timidity and can cripple some at times from any usefulness.Strong assurance encourages the believer to godly living,strength and vigor in duties and boldness to bring the Gospel to those in need.-Assurance is the-"pillar and anchor of the soul","...by strong and customary acts of believing in Christ and patiently waiting,we come at last to be assured." Assurance will help one to remain steady,to press on 'to be strong in the Lord' and the power of His might amidst the fierce winds of trial,that this life brings at times-p.199 "There is no stronger wall to repel the devil's darts than the testimony and knowledge of the truth and knowledge of grace in our hearts." There are many obstacles to assurance.Doubts and fears are two of the most significant obstacles.Carelessness is also an obstacle.2Peter1:10a '...give diligence to make your calling and election sure...'. One great help to assurance is to be tender and watchful towards all known sin-"sin separates the soul from God and causes a great gulf between them."

While faith and assurance are not the same thing,there is a close connection between them.When faith is strong it weakens and removes doubt,sometimes completely for a season.When faith is weak or unsteady,then doubt and fear will gain strength and seek to overcome the saint of God,so much so that they wind up in John Bunyan's 'Doubting Castle' and battle with the 'Giant Despair'(from Bunyans' allegory of the Christian life 'A Pilgrim's Progress).

The Puritan's preached and wrote frequently on 'The Nature Of True And False Conversion'.Though Burgess's 'Spiritual Refining'(Faith Seeking Assurance is an abridged version of that work) is one of the great works on 'Assurance of Salvation', there is an intimate connection between these two things.One of the ways a person comes to a Biblically grounded assurance of faith is by being able to discern 'The Mark's Of God's Children' in their lives.Some lack assurance because they mistake some of their weakness and frailty for a lack of sincerity,or they don't have an adequate understanding of 'The Mark's Of Grace'.A book,such as this,which clearly distinguishes these things,might help to clarify for some,who lack or struggle with assurance, that they have been reconciled to God.

Tremendous! Challenging! Convicting! Buy It!

If you're looking for a book that gets in your face and calls sin, sin--this is it! This is not for those who are weak of heart but for those who are seeking to know God in the deepest way. Those who are not afraid to examine their own lives to the deepest levels and root out the stench of sin and worldly compromise. This book was a blessing to my life.

Where does the Power come from? Certainly Not Man Created

Oddly enough, I discovered in my own life a need for a spiritual revival that did not come from meditations on the navel, praying to a Moon god, reflecting on oceans and sunsets. I had a spiritual revival that changed my life- my attitudes, thinking, acting, and feeling toward the world and individuals. I began to see even more clearly that the troubles of political interventions never were going to sovle my problems or that of my neighbors. I needed to go to the source of all Power, that being the God of the Bible. This book reinforced by recognition that any change in humanity's well-fare will only come when I, and my fellow man, turn with willingness of mind and spirit, in recognition of my obvious prideful short-comings, and ask His help. You will either feel the Power of the Holy Spirit while reading this book, or you will shun it because you will know that are either unwilling or un-ready to receive it. But God waits patiently, even to your last breath. Now is the time to turn- there is no other way.

Finney is on point

Charles finney calls to account mediocre religion and lazy christians. His command of the english language and his devotion to seeing the lost saved make him a stand out minister. He, in this book shares his thoughts on the Baptism of he Holy Spirit. He cuts no minister slack for their lack of annointing and fervor. If you profess to be a believer this is a must read.
