Hell Is for Real: Why it Matters, by Gary Frazier

According to the results of recent surveys, Americans overwhelmingly believe that HEAVEN exists, though a much smaller number believe that HELL exists, with only one-tenth of one percent believing they will go there when they die. Gary Frazier helps readers:

  • Discern what beliefs are based on fact or fiction
  • Discover the truth in the midst of so much deception
  • Understand the depth of Scripture that speaks of HELL more than HEAVEN.

Hell is for Real is a clear search for truth, and truth matters for the simple reason that we all have a divine appointment with death. What if those who do not believe in HELL die one day and find they made a tragic and eternal mistake? Where do we turn for real answers? Should we look to movies, television, and stories of personal experiences, psychics, or religion?

Cemeteries and mausoleums dot the landscape of America as evidence and reminders of the sad reality of death. The good news is there is a source of hope that provides answers for each and every one who cares to seek the truth. Join the search and choose wisely because, eternity is too long to be wrong and Hell is for Real.

Great read
By Scott Cook
Thank you Gary for writing this book. It really reminds me of the brutal truth we all will have to face. It has called me out for the sins in my life and will work on my personal relationship with Jesus. I really like the format and the bible scriptures to back up the realities of revelation. I will read this over as many times as it takes to remind me how valuable and important my life is to not waste anymore time with stupid stuff in this earthly realm. All that matters is serving a great God and to know, follow, and obey Jesus.

Worth reading, regardless of your background
By DMP
Note: I was offered a free book for an honest review.

Gary Frazier has written a very clear and understandable approach to the whole question of Hell and future events as presented in the Bible. Obviously, someone who is already a believer and adherent to a dispensational theology will readily read this. However, I think that if someone is open minded about the subject, regardless of their background, they will come away with a solid understanding of this viewpoint - whether they accept that viewpoint or not.

The bottom line is that if Mr. Frazier's theology is correct, then you owe it yourself to read this and make a potentially life changing / eternal decision. If you still disagree with him, then you've only lost a few hours of your time.

I give this book 5 stars because he uses defensible arguments and interesting examples.

URGENT - This is a MUST READ!!! There is no time to wait...
By Lillian
An excellent read showing the brutal reality and truth about Hell and the consequences of the wrong decisions and choices we make.
Dr. Frazier brilliantly proves Hell (& Heaven) is for Real with scriptural references, and plays it out through the story of the Rhodes family. This book should cause every person who dares to read it to make a decision to accept The Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior, rather than suffer the eternal consequences of Hell. And by the way, no decision is a decision and is just as destructive as the wrong decision... it leads to Hell. Thankfully, Dr. Frazier shares the Good News and how to make the right decision for eternal life in Heaven!

About the Author
J.R. Miller, some might say, was born with a pencil in one hand and a book in the other. His writing career started in 6th grade when he wrote a science essay for whom he foolishly thought was the girl of his dreams. She got an A. He did not. Later, he earned an A for an 8th grade bully, sparing him a beat-down of epic proportions. Through most of his adolescence, however, his writing career fell to secret angst-filled journals, silly revenge stories and trite song lyrics all of which he promptly (and regretfully) destroyed upon finding them years later in a box under his bed. He was born and raised in the blue-collar suburbs of Detroit. After a career designing and copywriting for a super- big ad agency proved that corporate cube farms are The Matrix, he, joined by his wife and children, moved to Florida, where he received his MFA in Creative Writing from the University of South Florida. His work has been published by Midwestern Gothic, Palooka, Prime Number, Prick of the Spindle, and several others. He is founding editor of A Review of Text and Image and the production editor for Sweet Publications.

The Beauty of Self-Control
By sandy
This book is very rich in the material presented. The fact that it was written from a different time period made it at times difficult for me to grasp, but overall it was a wonderful book! A spiritual minded person with good understanding of how books were presented during that time period will enjoy this book!

Exceptional Read
By Rhino
The Beauty of Self Control, which was published over 100 years ago, is one of the most relative books on this subject that I have had the opportunity to read. I was pleasantly surprised to find that a strong spiritual basis for self control is highlighted throughout this fine book. If you truly are seeking to improve your character and further develop your person, this book is a must read. -- Ryan Philbeck, Michigan

this was a great deal. This is for our daughter to use ...
By BBecker
The same bible was $25 at our local book store so, this was a great deal. This is for our daughter to use for school and it is the perfect size. It's thin so it doesn't take a lot of room in the desk and backpack but big enough so the print isn't small and difficult to read. Plus the imitation leather is very soft and flexible not like some that after a short time it cracks and becomes brittle. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a bible.

A Glorious Dark: Finding Hope in the Tension between Belief and Experience, by A. J. Swoboda

When what you believe isn't what you see

On Thursday as they ate the Passover meal with Jesus, the disciples believed that the kingdom was coming and they were on the front end of a revolution. Then came the tragedy of Friday and, somehow even worse, the silence of Saturday. They ran. They doubted. They despaired. Yet, within the grave, God's power was still flowing like a mighty river beneath the ice of winter. And then there was Sunday morning.

Real, raw, and achingly honest, A Glorious Dark meets readers in the ambiguity, doubt, and uncertainty we feel when our beliefs about the world don't match up to reality. Tackling tough questions like Why is faith so hard? Why do I doubt? Why does God allow me to suffer? and Is God really with me in the midst of my pain? A. J. Swoboda puts into sharp focus a faith that is greater than our personal comfort or fulfilment. He invites readers to develop a faith that embraces the tension between what we believe and what we experience, showing that the very tension we seek to eliminate is where God meets us.

From the Back Cover
"Too often Western Christian churches focus only on the sunny side of life. Why? Because it takes far more courage to walk into the darkness. Lucky for us, A. J. Swoboda has the guts to pierce the darkness and search for God there."--Jonathan Merritt, author of Jesus Is Better Than You Imagined; senior columnist for Religion News Service-"Once upon a time, there was a man who saw the the breadth of God's strange redemption in just three days of Holy Week. That man is A.J. Swoboda and this is his book. It is funny, honesty, literary, outward looking, inward looking, and upward looking. 'Stars are only seen when its dark,' Swoboda writes. Indeed, and it is rare to find both stars and their darkness so beautifully charted in ink. A glorious read."--Paul Pastor, associate editor for Christianity Today's Leadership Journal and PARSE-"A.J. writes with the passion of a genuine seeker and with the reflective insight of a true mystic. Here he turns his attention to the meaning of Jesus's death and resurrection. We find ourselves drawn into the momentous events of the cross and resurrection yet again."--Alan Hirsch, author, activist, dreamer; alanhirsch.org-"Just as the real story of Golgotha is of three crosses, not one, so theologian A.J. Swoboda shows in fiery wisdom and icy wit how the real story of Holy Week is of three days, not one. This is a book I will get out and reread every Holy Week for the rest of my life-to keep the gospel 'good news' that stays good and stays news."--Leonard Sweet, bestselling author; professor at Drew University and George Fox Evangelical Seminary; chief contributor to Sermons.com-"A Glorious Dark is a brilliant display of the cross of Christ. My heart and mind were awakened by A.J. Swoboda creatively redeeming everything from personal experience to insightful apologetics, from Star Wars to Jean-Paul Sartre. He challenged me to confront long-held myths that dead-ended my faith. For any serious student of life, A Glorious Dark is a must read!"--Wayne Cordeiro, author and pastor at New Hope Christian Fellowship, Honolulu, Hawaii-"Attention is owed to any writer who can excavate the deep theological meaning of Scooby-Doo and apply it articulately to Christian faith-and that writer is A.J. Swoboda! With spark, passion, and an engaging accessibility, Swoboda successfully makes the case for a holistic Christian life that holds in tension the poles of light and dark, triumph and loss. Highly recommended!"--Tom Krattenmaker, USA Today contributing columnist; author of The Evangelicals You Don't Know-"Is our Christian faith painful, awkward, or hopeful? That's like asking if water is a solid, liquid, or gas. The answer is emphatically Yes! Swoboda reminds us that although we want to pick and choose, God knows we need the full spectrum of death, descent, and resurrection to abide in Christ. Gloriously enlightening!"--Nancy Sleeth, author of Almost Amish; cofounder of Blessed Earth-"Swoboda has written a beautiful book. It felt like reading the Psalms. He touches on the full bandwidth of the human experience with compassion, honesty, insight, and humor. And this book ruminates with love for God. Not a sentimental love of evangelical culture, but a deep clinging to Jesus through all the complexities of faith and discipleship. This book will resonate deeply and inspire faith to walk boldly into the glorious dark."--Jon Tyson, pastor at Trinity Grace Church, New York; author of Sacred Roots: Why the Church Still Matters-"A.J. is like Seinfeld and Kierkegaard rolled into one. If you want dry diatribes of funny fluff, look elsewhere...This book is hilarious and holy in all the right ways!"--Joshua Ryan Butler, author of The Skeleton's in God's Closet; pastor at Imago Dei Community in Portland, Oregon-"Among this next generation of faith-leaders, A.J. Swoboda stands apart, bringing in equal measure the mind of the scholar, the heart of the shepherd, and the honesty of the bard. No one else could have written A Glorious Dark."--Tony Kriz, author of Aloof; neighborhood pastor in Portland, Oregon-"In A Glorious Dark, AJ Swoboda  paints a full-color portrait of the love of God that is both exquisitely simple and profoundly complex.  His words dive deep into the beauty of Holy Week while never attempting to explain away the mystery.  I found myself more intrigued, more captivated and more in love with the One whose story stretches out over the wide expanse of human history and welcomes us all in."--Bo Stern, speaker and author of Beautiful Battlefields  -"This good book on the pattern of death and resurrection in the Christian life,  A Glorious Dark, offers a fresh accounting of faith in the contemporary world. In this book, author, pastor, theologian, Swoboda guides us through the story of Jesus's death, burial, and resurrection.  Throughout Swoboda teaches us to embrace the Christian life with all of its mysterious discomforts."--Keith Jagger, spiritual director with Equipping Lydia

A Perfect Road Map Through the Process of Spiritual Questioning
By Dr. Michelle Watson
Vulnerable. Real. Challenging. Authentic. Heartfelt. Thought-provoking. Moving. I could go on but these meager words are my best attempt at summarizing the impact that AJ's book, A Glorious Dark, had on me.

They say you can't judge a book by it's cover, but in this case the cover truly does accurately represent that which unfolds in the treasured pages that follow. His subtitle claims that this is a book to help us "find hope in the tension between belief and experience." From the very start AJ calls us to embrace the tension involved in working out our faith experience. No pat answers. Instead, he invitingly normalizes the process of spiritual wrestling.

Having already been a fan of AJ's writing from his first book, I enthusiastically dove into this one and once again found that I was drawn in from the very first page. He has a powerful style of sharing his heart while leading us to follow. His profound and unique ways of seeing the world are a gift in that they put words to thoughts that have often not had such succinct expression. I can honestly say that this book exceeded my expectations.

By using the three days between Jesus death and resurrection as a metaphor of our lives ("I want to persuade my readers that Christian faith is the whole weekend and they must enter all three days---we must embrace the pain of Friday's sunset, the awkwardness of Saturday's silence, and the hopeful sunrise of Sunday morning."), AJ chose to vulnerably expose his "Friday" struggles, risking possible criticism as a result. For me, however, it is exactly this kind of raw and honest self-disclosure that deeply spoke to me and makes this book, in my opinion, a must-read for anyone who longs for a richer, fuller, more authentic, transformative interaction with our Creator God, the One who longs for relationship with His kids. Thank you AJ for the gift you've given us all in writing and sharing this book.

"Hey, A.J, I read your book..."
By Bryan C. McWhite
You should really read "A Glorious Dark" just to get that joke. And then marvel at my wit, please.

I've been reading the other reviews of this book, and rereading the cover blurbs and I'm honestly convinced that many (most?) of the endorsers didn't actually read the book, or at least aren't quite sure what to make of it. There are a lot of gushing adjectives in the endorsements--and deservedly so--but not much sense at all of what the book is actually about, or what it might be useful for. And it's hard to blame them. It is a little difficult to discern what A.J. is trying to do here. And it might actually help to have a little ADHD in order to follow it's flow, which is far more serpentine than the stream in its cover art. But it's an excellent book, so I'd like my (brief) review to try to fill that gap a bit in hopes that you'll read it.

"A Glorious Dark" is part Swoboda autobiography, part biography of Theophilus, part gentle critique of the shallow, consumeristic, materialistic tendencies of the western church, and part a few other things... But really what it is (or, at least what I perceived it to be) is a holistic articulation of the beauty and wonder of the story of God in Christ. In other words, in some ways it's an apologetic for Christian faith. But not at all in the vein of Geisler or Zacharias or William Lane Craig, who spoke into a modern, Christendom mindset, convinced that a compelling articulation of evidence is sufficient to "win" people to Christ. Swoboda is much closer in pedigree to N.D. Wilson (see his "Notes from the Tilt-A-Whirl") or C.S. Lewis who, as he says, began later in his career to realize that people tend to be changed not through their intellectual faculties, but through their imaginations.

Swoboda uses the rubric of the three final days of Holy Week as a lens that brings the Christian life into focus. As he says, "I want to persuade my readers that Christian faith is the whole weekend and they must enter all three days---we must embrace the pain of Friday's sunset, the awkwardness of Saturday's silence, and the hopeful sunrise of Sunday morning." But what's that mean? Well, what he really seems to be doing is reimagining a fresh articulation of the Christian faith--and not a shallow, Christian bookstore best-seller shelf version of the Christian faith. But a Christian faith that reckons with the doubt, darkness and despair inherent in the Christian life, as well as its joy, wonder and beauty. This despite the fact that his "positions" (I don't think he'd like that term) on a variety of issues such as sin, heaven and hell, judgment. the resurrection, the Bible, human sexuality, etc., are actually quite traditionally orthodox. But his articulation of the Christian faith is anything but traditional. It's fresh and imaginative and vivid and tangible and humorous and insightful--exactly the sort of articulation many Millenials, in particular, will find compelling. Swoboda is a masterfully insightful observer of the world, and his observations make his work very engaging and enjoyable.

So, how I intend to use this book is to read it several times and to absorb its language and expressions--not so that I can mimic A.J., but because I think his articulation of the Christian faith is a very helpful one in the cultural milieu in which I find myself. I'm a Gen X-er pastoring Millenials, and I have an inherited modernistic, Christendom, evangelical vocabulary that I'm constantly trying to break out of because it doesn't work anymore. It had its place and time, but it's now tired, doesn't spark imagination, and doesn't address the questions Millenials tend to ask. My theological and ecclesiological "positions" (there it is again) seem very close to Swoboda's, but I want to learn to articulate them as imaginatively and provocatively as he does--even if that means stealing his lines here and there.

You'll enjoy this book. You'd really have to have lost the humor and whimsical faculties of your brain not to. It's worth reading just to spark your own imagination and learn new ways of thinking about Jesus and his present and coming Kingdom. But if you find yourself in similar shoes as mine, this could also be a very useful tool. Thanks, A.J.

One Weekend in History
By Michele Morin
For years I celebrated Easter as if it were a stand-alone holiday, singing “Up from the Grave He Arose” without giving much thought to the horror of the Dying or the silence of the Dead. Providentially, my early efforts to incarnate and to enliven an invisible God in the hearts of four sweet boys found a way into the obtuse heart of their mother as well. Therefore, this Lenten season, I will be re-reading A Glorious Dark, a book about believing which confronts the loss and defeat of Friday and the awkward silence of Saturday with Sunday morning resurrection truth. Where memoir meets theological pondering, author A.J. Swoboda’s story winds through his faith journey, with the bonus of startling spotlight quotes which he aims at himself and at all of us who say that we believe. Here’s one of the dozen or more: “Many envision faith as a kind of hall pass for laziness, excusing them from a life of action, doing, and working hard.” Ouch and amen.

What we believe about one weekend in history, the three days’ journey from Golgotha to the garden tomb, impacts our whole experience of the Christian life. A Glorious Dark challenges the reader to enter into Friday, to “own up to our part of the evil in the world.” This involves trusting for the lavish grace to have our emptiness filled, our requests denied, and our fatherlessness remedied by the Father. On Friday, we turn our faces away from our “sponge” of choice and embrace our identity as pilgrims, lifelong seekers of the will and the voice of God.

With candor, Swoboda describes the bleak-hearted rising of post-crucifixion Saturday, and because much of the Christian life is lived under Saturday-like conditions, it is helpful to hear that we must “sit in Saturday;” we must “squat in the tomb” in order to enter into the grief and disappointment of the original disciples. Saturday is our opportunity to remember our own mortality, to remember that we live with Jesus in his death. On Saturday, we evict ourselves from the center of the universe by “embracing the gift of waiting,” and by mourning our failure to see others and their grief.

Resurrection Sunday not only verifies all that Jesus claimed, but it points to his future coming, the ultimate surprise which will serve to further verify all that we hold true. As the church meets to celebrate the resurrection every Sunday, we also reenact the resurrection, celebrating the mystery with “people we normally wouldn’t love, [who] breathe down our necks, [but who] hold our feet to the fire of our beliefs.” Sunday faith perseveres when my theology cannot account for the chaos I see around me.

A Glorious Dark reveals a God who “stand[s] tall” above human history and invites (rather than scorns) the questioning heart. After all, of the thirty-one questions Jesus posed in the Gospels, He answered only three. When God does not break into history to rectify the list of problems set forth in my latest memorandum/prayer, it will be helpful to remember the messy way in which that one weekend in history played out for those who were on the scene. Once again, the life of Jesus will be made manifest, a glorious life emerging from a glorious dark.

A Readers Journey through Matthew
By Book lover reviews
I really enjoyed these daily readings of the Bible and Darlene's insight and the spiritual truths she has observed. Many times I would read what Darlene wrote and said," Wow." I had never thought of that passage in that way before. Many of these insights inspired me to try to live as God would want me to.This journey incourages and shares God's truths. I hope she writes more of these Spirit led devotions and Bible studies. I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Read how we can be joyful in all circumstances and bring God glory!
By Amazon Customer
I have so enjoyed this journey with Darlene through Matthew. She brings her perspective as a writer and a precious woman who lives in a nursing home. She reminds me in each reading that we can be joyful in our circumstances and bring glory to our Savior. I would recommend this to anyone but especially to writers and/or to those who live in a nursing home or love someone who does. I have read it with my mother each time I visit her and it truly blesses her heart in a special way.

This book was timely, powerful, and grounded. ...
By Karla
This book was timely, powerful, and grounded. It is the rare author who can speak such raw truth with such pure grace--God met me in these devotions, and I am grateful. Darlene's writing is always solidly grounded in the Bible, and I appreciate how I learn as I am inspired. More than anything, though, her courage in sharing real-live stories within real-live struggles gives us all permission to be human . . . and be saved. #redemption #beinspired #blessed

Mad About God: The Over-Romanticism of Pain and Why Your Suffering Is Not a Lesson, by J S Park

When life hurts, we're tempted to spiritualize our pain and to find a lesson in the suffering.

We've heard, "Everything happens for a reason and God has an amazing plan for your life."
But sometimes, you just want to be angry with Him. You want to shake a fist and shout against the dark.

You don't want to rush past your healing with Christianese clichés and pat answers.

Another irreversible tragedy has left you doubting Him, wondering if He's really good and truly in control.

Maybe no one has taught us how to be mad about God. Maybe the secret rage at our pain means we're closer to God than we think.

In this journey through our trials and suffering, we'll discover a safe place to vent, to be angry, and to grieve without formulas. Here are real stories from real people with heartache and loss, with no bow-ties and a messy crawl to victory. We'll talk about True Detective, Louis C.K., the Serial Podcast, and The Shawshank Redemption. We'll also talk about depression, doubt, surviving rumors and failure, handling a chaotic world, "messing up God's Will," why cancer in Hollywood has to be sexy, second world problems, the pressure to do "great things," and misquoting Jeremiah 29:11.

There's no silver bullet or magical formula in these pages, but perhaps we'll find a Faith that works in the face of death, and a Truth could carry us through to the end.

Amazingly profound and wise ideas on a delicate and sensitive subject
By Rachel Denk
I want to start off by saying that this book spoke to me on such a deep level. After struggling for some time with God and forbidding myself to feel anger towards Him and ask Him, "Why?", this book served as a catalyst that broke the dam I had spent so many years building.

How many times do you feel like you have to be "in the right mindset" or at a "good place" with God in order to come before Him? Don't you ever feel like you've been told since God is almighty and righteous that we have no right to be upset or angry with Him? And when we can't suppress pain, anger, or bitterness, all of that is somehow transformed into guilt. Why? Because as Christians, we're supposed to be happy and giddy all the time, seeing every ounce of pain and every drop of suffering as a blessing and forbidding ourselves to truly feel those "bad feelings." At least that's how I saw it. But don't worry, that's not the case. J.S. Park beautifully deconstructs all of these notions that have been drilled into us for far too long. And guess what? It's okay to be upset. It's okay to be angry. It's okay to doubt. It's okay to not understand why things happen and question God.

J.S. asks the hard questions. He prompts the difficult ideas. He opens the can of worms that may never truly be shut. My favorite passages from the book include Hijacking And Reclaiming Jeremiah 29:11, Our Hollywood Craze To Live An Epic Life, and The Problem With Job: As We Bleed, We Find Our Deepest Need. Sound intriguing just from the titles? You better believe it. These passages floored me - I often caught myself reading this and thinking how someone seemed to understand this little aspect of my heart and soul that had been secretly struggling for so long.

Ultimately, J.S. encourages the idea that with God as our rock and stronghold, we must come to Him. Whether we're kicking and screaming, seething anger, or drowning in sorrow, God wants all of us - every single part of us, the messy and clean. He wants us to come to Him. We don't have to make ourselves perfect before approaching Him. And while we allow ourselves to feel, God is right there with us.

I strongly urge you to read this book. You're human, you're going to struggle. And that's why this book is for you. Because amidst the joy of having a Savior who loves us dearly, there are going to be those times when you're bogged down in guilt, sorrow, and anger. This book phenomenally addresses those feelings and offers guidance and comfort for whatever you may be going through.

Thank you J.S. Park for yet another amazing contribution to the Christian community. This book has radically changed my faith and mindset, and I cannot thank you enough.

Something needing saying...
By Jerry L. Edmonds
Mad about God? Really?

Who in their right mind would get mad about God? Surely we should never express anger or frustration or disappointment about God. Wouldn't this give us an express ticket to Hell? Surely this invites fire to fall on us from heaven!

Nope.

If this response is ungodly and brings condemnation, then Job is condemned. As is David. As is Jonah. As is Ezekiel. As is Moses.

As is Christ.

All of these people expressed, even vented their feelings about God. If we're honest with ourselves, I think we all can say that we have done the same. Emotions, after all, are God's idea, God's design. He made us emotional creatures. Why would we want to deny any aspect of ourselves to Christ? Wouldn't that make us disingenuous? Fakes? Especially since He knows us anyway?

Joon responds to the above dialogue in his usual open, brutally honest manner. He is willing to say what many would suppress. He hits head on the reality of the human/God relationship in a manner more honest than any other written work that I have read, save the Bible.

See, that's the beauty of the Bible. No other scripture treats its heroes in such a normal, fallible way...you know, how we humans actually are? I mean, get real. If you were writing about your life, as Moses did, wold you make sure you included your failures, even emphasizing them? Not me.

Joon follows this pattern with this, his latest (and I think best) work. I don't know if there is a more misunderstood aspect of the Christian life, and life in general, than the place of evil, pain, and suffering. These experiences are the ones that bring such feelings to the surface, causing us to lash out at God as many characters in Scripture were prone to do.

Without presenting spoilers, let me here say that God is a big God, capable of handling anything that we throw at Him. Not only do I see it cathartic to lash out at God sometimes, I see it necessary.

It is dangerous to take this to extremes, just as it is dangerous to take most things to extremes. Despite this reality, there is a place and time for being mad about God. Where we cross over into danger is when we misunderstand that this pain, suffering, and evil is, as the Psalmist writes, a valley to go through-not into. Joon does a great job pointing out the areas of proper and improper expressions of emotions.

Once you have read this book, you'll have a better understanding of how OK it is, with yourself and God, to be the human that you are.

watching a loved one suffer from a terminal illness
By Anna Bachinsky
Pain, trials, and hardships are inevitable for everyone. At one point in our life we will all reach a place where we find ourselves starting at a dead end, looking into a coffin, watching a loved one suffer from a terminal illness, or face a job loss, a heartache, or a bankruptcy and it is at those moments when we hit the lowest of lows that it is hard to believe in a loving God who wants the best for you. It is hard to believe that your future will somehow be brighter. It is hard to believe that you will ever get out of the dark hole you find yourself in. It is here where doubt starts and our questions begin. Why would God allow something bad to happen? Is there always some kind of spiritual and good reason for the suffering we endure? And should we still believe in a God when the broken pieces of our lives lay as proof that a God that is in control seemed to have stepped back and allow us to experience moments that seem absolutely out of control?

I have asked myself these questions many times when I found myself right in the middle of a storm, and I still ask them today. My faith has been shaken by circumstances I can’t control, by healings of loved ones that don’t come, and by prayers that remain unanswered for years. Picking up this book and reading it was both refreshing and encouraging and it helped me discover that even in the midst of my doubt and pain I have a reason to hope and believe. If you buy this book hoping to get all of your hard life questions answered then you will be disappointed because there will be no clear answers, there will be no cute Christian clichés to memorize, and there will be no special techniques and methods to help you put God in a box and understand why you are walking though pain.

But what this book WILL do is help you see suffering from a brand new light and a fresh new perspective. It will open your eyes to truths in the Bible about trials and pain that will make you understand what you are going through in a way you may never have understood before. And in the end it will bring you to the One who does have all the answers. The One who knew suffering better than every single one of us. And even then, we might not get all of the answers to our “why’s.” But at least we will have a place where we can begin.

If you are going through a hard season right now and if suffering just doesn’t make sense to you I would highly recommend for you to read this book.
