Review

“Prayer is a particular kind of relationship to God, not a technique. By examining the fundamentals of that relationship—who he is and who we are—with straightforward Bible exposition, William Philip helps you understand and enter into it.”
—Timothy J. Keller, Pastor, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, New York City; best-selling author, The Reason for God

“There are not many books on prayer, and there are fewer good books on prayer. Here is a handbook on the subject that combines clarity and brevity and provides us with a thoroughly biblical and understandable framework for prayer. I commend it enthusiastically.”
—Alistair Begg, Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Chagrin Falls, Ohio

“Philip grounds prayer in the nature of the triune God, thus avoiding the modern evangelical tendency to make ‘the experience of prayer’ central. When divine Sonship and not feelings define you, then you have real prayer with a real God. This book will bless you.”
—Paul E. Miller, Executive Director, seeJesus; author, A Praying Life and A Loving Life

“This book made me want to pray! It shows us what God is like—a Father who speaks, and whose adopted children are able to speak to him, by his Spirit. It is thoroughly biblical, honest, and entertaining. Philip takes our eyes off ourselves and our performance and onto God—Father, Son and Spirit.”
—Caz Dodds, Scotland Assistant Team Leader, UCCF

“Wonderfully refreshing, biblically realistic, and personally motivational—this book cuts through the stereotypes and guilt about prayer and presents us with our amazing privileges, at the heart of what it means to be a child of God. It will do your own heart good!”
—David Jackman, Former President, Proclamation Trust, London, England

“To speak freshly about prayer is neither easy nor common. Philip has done it here. In answering so well the big question he has set himself, he has enriched my thinking and practice.”
—Dick Lucas, Rector Emeritus, St. Helen's Church, Bishopsgate, United Kingdom, Founder of Proclamation Trust

“In this wonderful book I find that my prayer life needs a reality check. The heart of prayer is not only talking to God, but knowing I pray because God is a speaking God.”
—Karen Loritts, author; conference speaker; blogger, MomLife Today; mother of four and grandmother of eight

“In this fine book on prayer you will find no super-spiritual hype nor dry detachment, but robust and sensitive exposition. Philip has put us all in his debt by this little book, which can be read with enjoyment in one sitting, but will reward repeated study and will give both challenge and encouragement.”
—Bob Fyall, Senior Tutor, The Cornhill Training Course, Scotland

“I found my heart and will deeply moved by the key premise of this book: that we learn about prayer by learning about God. He speaks—are we listening to him? He sends his Son—are we responding to him? He is sovereign—do we trust him and think his thoughts after him? He sends his Spirit—do we realize we’re empowered to pray? Internalize these great Bible truths, and your prayer life will come alive.”
—Rico Tice, Evangelist; author, Christianity Explored

“It’s refreshing not to have another Christian how-to book. Philip takes us right in by the front door and down the stairs to examine the very foundation of prayer. As he presses us to face the why, we also find help with the what and the how. I found these studies an essential exercise in thinking, a welcome source of relief, and a gentle lure to repentance.”
—Dale Ralph Davis, Professor Emeritus of Old Testament, Reformed Theological Seminary

We know we should pray, but do we know why? A readable, pastoral explanation.
By Paul Mastin
Glasgow minister William Philip would certainly encourage his congregation to pray, but in his new book Why We Pray his concern "is not with an exhortation to pray but with an explanation of prayer." He writes that "nothing is more important and nothing more difficult to maintain than a meaningful prayer life," so an explanation is in order.

Here are the four reasons we pray:

God is a speaking God
We are sons of God
God is a sovereign God
We have the spirit of God

Prayer is all about talking. We speak to people with whom we want to have a relationship. "Speech is the audible form of a real and living relationship." We were created for relationship with God, and "we have been redeemed that we might again respond to him." This, to me, is one of the most important points Philip makes. We don't pray because we are worthy to approach God, but because of our status as adopted children of God. Our purity or sincerity are irrelevant to our ability or worthiness in prayer. Because of our adopted status, "God cannot not hear us." So when we pray not believing that God hears, or when we don't pray, we are "disbelieving the gospel."

I struggled with Philip's exposition on the third point: God's sovereignty. I agree that prayer should not primarily about asking for stuff. Christians have long struggled with "the efficacy of prayer" as C.S. Lewis wrote about. Responding to the common assertion that "prayer changes things," Philip writes, "People repeating this phrase rather assume . . . that God won't work unless we pray, or (worse) that God can't work unless we pray," implying that "God is, in fact, impotent without the help of our prayers."

A better approach is to think of prayer as agreeing with God. Because we have the spirit of God, we are alongside him, like a less-skilled player playing alongside the all-time league champion on the same team. Philips writes, "So if we mean by the phrase, 'Prayer changes things' that prayer takes control of God and his thoughts and his ways, I'm afraid that just won't do at all. A much better dictum is this: 'Prayer is thinking his thoughts after him.'"

I can't argue with this. I was nodding right along with him. But later on, I'm thinking about praying for specific things, about the woman pleading with the judge, about other scriptures that point to asking God. I have to conclude that this is one of those enigmas of faith. I don't subscribe to open theism, which Philips links to the idea that we change God's mind when we pray and that God does not know or control the future. However difficult it is to reconcile God's perfect knowledge and our need to bring our petitions to him, I think we can, in faith, believe both.

Nevertheless, Philip's book is pastoral and readable. What a great reminder that as God's children, God wants to hear from us. Now that Philips has provided a rationale for why we pray, well, let's pray!

Thinking God's Thoughts After Him
By Michele Morin
“Why would God want us to speak to Him?”

William Philip’s question stopped me in my tracks because most authors of books on prayer argue from the opposite perspective: “Why should you want to speak to God?” Forever curious about the nature of God and constantly frustrated with my inconsistent prayer life, I found biblically-based and deeply thoughtful reflections in Why We Pray, which focuses on explaining rather than exhorting, and bases the explanation for why we pray on satisfying theological reasoning expressed in four points:

1. We pray because God is a speaking God. He spoke the world into being. He spoke to our spiritual forbearers audibly. He spoke salvation through His Son (see Hebrews 1:2), and He speaks today by His Spirit to all who seek his words in the inspired Word. Created in his image for relationship with Him, our highest privilege is communion with God. Thus prayer becomes “the audible form of that right relationship with God.”

2. We pray because we are sons of God. The only begotten Son of God is ultimately the only “true human being” in the sense that He maintained constant communication with God. As the God the Son, he had direct access to the Father. And no wonder the gospel is called good news, because the truth is that all who are in Christ Jesus are the sons of God and have that same access to the Father! An important point of clarification is that because “son-ship” in biblical times implied a certain status, the term “son” should not rankle the female ear. If “son” offends, a better substitute would be “heir” rather than “child,” because “everything that [belongs to Jesus] by right of birth is now ours by right of adoption.” The staggering application of this truth to our prayer life is that, as our Father, God “cannot not hear us” when we pray. Hence, our identity as pray-ers stems from our standing rather than from our merit or performance.

3. We pray because God is a sovereign God. Having taken the initiative in calling out to us, and having restored broken lines of communication with humanity in the death of his Son, God Himself is the ultimate reason that prayer is even a logical activity. John Newton poetically summarizes Philip’s argument: “Thou art coming to a King/Large petitions with thee bring/For his grace and pow’r are such/None could ever ask too much.” However, this attribute of sovereignty constantly rides the theological seesaw opposite human responsibility, particularly in relation to prayer. Why We Pray makes an excellent case for a balanced seesaw: “God is sovereign, and we are responsible.” Philip encourages his readers to view prayer as “thinking God’s thoughts after Him,” not as robots, but from a place of privileged partnership, understanding God’s goal for the universe and receiving all the benefits of a working relationship with One who is aware of, concerned for, and able to meet our deepest, truest needs.

4. We pray because we have the Spirit of God. It is the indwelling Holy Spirit who aligns our desires with God’s sovereign purposes — and who convinces us that it is not in our best interest to try to align God with our selfish purposes. The indwelling Holy Spirit’s enabling us to become “real pray-ers” bears out the truth of Jesus’ insistence that it was far better for his disciples that He leave them, for the ministry of the Spirit completes a staggeringly important circle: the sovereign God who speaks abides in his true sons through the Holy Spirit’s ministry for us, in us, and to us. As a result, the believer who abides in Him and prays in line with the revealed will of God in scripture will pray with confidence.

An excellent and very relevant and realistic point for “boots on the ground” Christianity is the matter of prayer when the will of God is not clear on a matter; e.g. the prayer for healing of a gravely ill family member. When God has not seen fit to reveal his will, “to attempt to drum up lots of faith in order to be sure that God will answer our prayer is self-deception.” In fact, “often the more fervent the prayer the more pagan it is,” (see Matthew 6:7). Refusing to lay the matter out before a sovereign God and scorning the words “if it is your will” is not a mark of faith, but of presumption.

Reading Why We Pray, answering each chapter’s Questions for Reflection or Discussion, and realizing anew the nature and motivation of true prayer is an eye-opening experience. In the foreword, Alistair Begg has written, “In our Christian lives, nothing is more important and nothing more difficult to maintain than a meaningful prayer life.” I would add to that: there is no greater privilege than the challenge of becoming a praying person — because of Who God is and because of who we are in Christ.

Short, Succinct, and Encouraging
By Terrence T. Delaney
At only 112 pages and four chapters Why We Pray may be one of the quickest reads on this most important aspect of the Christian Life I have read to date. Granted, there are a number of articles and such, but this little book is full of biblical insight centered on who God is and what He has done for us through His Son, Jesus Christ. It is quite frankly because of who God is that leads us to be able to pray confidently knowing that He not only hears our prayers but He will answer them as well.

Philip deftly deals with certain questions (why pray if God knows what is going to happen) though he readily admits he is not dealing with them exhaustively. His intention in writing this book is to give the reader confidence to pray. Therefore, he does not belabor his points nor does he offer systematic theologies on various doctrinal concerns. This is done, in my estimation, in order to quickly introduce the reader to the necessity and joys of prayer and to gently give them a little nudge to begin praying.

I believe the brevity and succinctness of Why We Pray is its greatest strength. Along with that is the apparent high view of God the author has as he extols His greatness page after page.

There are a number of books on prayer. Why We Pray deserves your attention because it is short, succinct, powerful, and full of conviction and joy as the author happily explains that the greatest reason to pray is the truth that you get to talk directly to the Creator of the universe. I highly recommend this resource to all Christians.

When School Bells Call (Farm Life Series), by Elva Hurst

Readers ages seven to eleven will be drawn to this charming story that happened during a time not so long ago. Take a peek at life in a large, loving Mennonite family where everyone works together, faith is practiced daily, and fun happens often.

When the harvest starts in Lancaster County, it signals time for school to begin. Children help gather the fruits and vegetables from the gardens and prepare the one-room schoolhouse for the first day of school, and Elva loves it all!

One day Elva and her classmates plan a secret "food roll" to bless Teacher. They try their best to hide their giggles but erupt with laughter as Teacher shows her surprise. Then when her fifth-grade arithmetic lessons get Elva down, her brother suggests the perfect way to forget about her troubles—for a while anyway. And when the beautiful harvest moon is at its fullest, Elva steps quietly through the rustling corn fields to listen for...for what? What is it that makes Elva love autumn so much?

About the Author

Self-taught artist and gifted author Elva Hurst draws inspiration from her warm memories of growing up in a large conservative Mennonite family on a dairy farm in Pennsylvania. Now with a husband, four children, and a small farm of her own, she carves time out of her busy day to follow her passion for the arts and writing—all from her kitchen table.

a snapshot of life in rural Pennsylvania
By Wayne S. Walker
In rural Pennsylvania, summer is rapidly passing by, and autumn is coming. It is early September, and Elva is dreading fifth grade at school. She attends a one-room school house along with her older sister Eva Mae, her friend Linda Reiff, Linda's sisters, and other neighbors. I assume that it is an Old Order Mennonite school because Elva specifically refers to their "Amish neighbors" the Lapps (I wonder if this is Solomon Lapp's family, about whom Wanda Brunstetter writes) who also attend, and the school is across the road from an Old Order Mennonite Church, yet there is a reference to other "children in public schools." There is a new teacher this year.

The book follows Elva's adventures throughout the fall as she reluctantly starts her new school year, participates in the traditional "food roll" for the new teacher, tries to study fifth-grade arithmetic which she hates, learns an important lesson about lying while pretending to be sick so that she can play hooky from school to escape an arithmetic test, and joins in the family harvest activities. In the back are a glossary that will help readers to understand a number of Pennsylvania Dutch concepts, and a couple of recipes for tomato soup and browned butter which are mentioned in the story. Both children and adults can laugh with Elva while they also reflect on the various principles which her life and experiences impress upon her. Author and illustrator Elva Hurst is perhaps best known for her book 2006 picture book Woolly: My Pet Lamb. She also has another picture book, Johnny, The Story of a Doll.

When we were in Pennsylvania's Amish Country last year, I noticed the four books of Hurst's Farm Life Series and picked up this one because I am interested in anything related to old schools. I now wish that I had bought all four. Book 1 is The Pony Cart Adventure (2008) and must take place the summer before When School Bells Call because in the latter Elva writes, "There would be no more swimming in the creek or pony cart adventures. Linda and I laughed as we recalled our unforgettable pony cart ride to town and coming back in a thunder storm." Book 3 is A Country Girl's Christmas (2009), and Book 4 is Then Comes Spring. A similar book, True Friend, about a horse, was written by Elva's daughter, Bethany, age twelve. I certainly enjoyed reading about Elva's school days.

Who Are The Natsarim?: The Original Followers of Yahusha Of Natsarith (Strongholds & False Beliefs Book 4), by Lew White

This is an eBooklet for mobile devices that quickly references the historical existence of the Natsarim. It will prove from Scripture what they were called, and how their sect was "spoken against everywhere." It will contrast the original followers of Yahusha which settled at Antioch with the Didascalia, or Catechetical School at Alexandria - which was funded by Rome's Fiscus Judaicus, a tax on any who observed Torah. This state-supported Didascalia (literally "teaching authority") grew into the dominant form of Christianity seen today. After the destruction of Yerushalayim in 70 CE, two groups emerged: The Pharisees and the Natsarim. The way to recognize the true followers of Yahusha is not by what they wear, titles, racial makeup, or location. It is discovered by what they teach and their behavior, powered not by money, but by the living Spirit of Yahusha in them producing the fruits of His Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control - against which there is no law (Galatians 5).

A Great Pope's "Reflections on the Grandeur of Marriage and Family Life."
By John Willson
St. John Paul II was the greatest man of the twentieth century in many ways, but in no single way was his influence greater than in defense of the traditional family. This "Letter" is a book of 139 pages, designed by Sophia Institute for Teachers to be the basic primer on the subject from a Catholic point of view. It is beautiful. Originally written to celebrate his proclamation of 1994 as the Year of the Family, it is the perfect summary of St. JPW II's reflections on the most important institution in God's created order.

Something all parents should read
By Stuart Dunn
When I look back at Pope John Paul's papacy and think of the legacy he left, it is a bit overwhelming. The man was pope for 26 years. He visited many countries, touched the lives of many, and inspired a generation of Catholics. We think of his smiling face, the way he suffered at the end of his life, but we tend to forget about his legacy of words. Perhaps, that is because Pope Benedict XVI succeeded him and left us a legacy of books. However, Pope John Paul II, in addition to giving us Theology of the Body, he also delivered countless homilies, wrote fourteen encyclicals, and was also responsible for numerous exhortations and letters. Sophia Institute Press has recently published two of his works - Letter to Families and Catechesi Tradendae.

Letter to Families was a letter Pope John Paul II penned in 1994 addressed to families in the Year of the Family. He also considered it great preparation for the Great Jubilee of 2000. After an introduction, in which he explained how the family is a domestic church, he launches into Part One: The Civilization of Love. Here he discusses the role of man and woman, the covenant of marriage, parenthood, and family. Part Two: The Bridegroom is With You talks about the wedding at Cana, the mystery of marriage, and the Annunciation being the beginning of the "fairest love" of all.

The book is short, but powerful. There is an foreword by Archbishop Charles Chaput and study questions at the end to aid you if you are reading this on your own or with a small group. It is also a very affordable price, so what's not to love? If you are looking for a book to give to a newly married couple or a couple who has been married for twenty years, they would both benefit from reading this saint's words. Highly recommended!

About the Author
Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor. Murray considered missions to be "the chief end of the church." Andrew pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860. In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. After Martha Osborn married George Howe, they formed the South East Africa General Mission (SEAGM) in 1891. SAGM and SEAGM merged in 1894. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission's name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with SIM in 1998 and continues to this day. He died on January 18, 1917, four months before his eighty-ninth birthday. Over the years he has influenced many, including Jessie Penn-Lewis, a key figure in the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival.

After you read this little book, and you realize just how special Jesus' name is, you will never again speak His name with anything but reverence. In fact, when you hear someone else saying His name out of frustration or anger, you will cringe.
When you realize just how long ago this book was written by Fr.O'Sullivan, and how amazing it is that people are still reading it, you know that there must be a reason.

Christ the name above all names
By A Customer
In this book Fr. Paul tells of the power of the name of Jesus. So few people know of the power and the meaning behind this beautiful name. Father tells us of the miracles behind the name and how we can acheive holyness just by repeating the name of Jesus over and over again. It was practically impossible to put down. Father tells us that the name of Jesus is so powerful that every knee in Heaven and in Hell must bend and touch the ground when the holy name is said. Father also tells us of how much the devil hates the name of Jesus and how he flees in terror when he heres the holy name. The book is a must read for anyone wanting to recieve Christ in a more spiritual mannor and who also wants to learn to fight the devil while doing so.

The Power and Vulnerability of Love: A Theological Anthropology, by Elizabeth O'Donnell Gandolfo

What is it about human beings that makes us capable and even desirous of inflicting terrible suffering on others (and ourselves)? If human beings—not God—are the cause of evils such as extreme poverty, violence, and oppression, it is imperative that we probe the depths of the human heart to uncover why we, who are made in the image of Divine Eros, fail so miserably to love. Gandolfo constructs a theological anthropology in response to these pivotal questions. Gandolfo maintains that such an anthropology—and a response to these questions—begins with the condition of human vulnerability. Drawing on women's experiences of maternity and natality, she argues that vulnerability is a dimension of human existence that causes us great anxiety, which in turn sets in motion tragic attempts by individuals and interest groups to eliminate their own vulnerability at the cost of vulnerable others. Yet, vulnerability not only forms the basis for violence but also affords the possibility of human openness to the redemptive work of divine love. Poised paradoxically between tragic and redemptive vulnerability, human beings need existential resources and empowering practices to cope with and manage our vulnerability in more courageous, peaceful, and compassionate ways.

40 Days with the Holy Spirit, by Jack Levison

40 Days with the Holy Spirit will inspire you to encounter God in fresh and surprising ways. You’ll develop stronger spiritual muscles as you breathe, read, reflect, and pray—all with an eye to cultivating a relationship with the least familiar member of the Trinity. The book is interactive, offering the opportunity to write and pray each day; intelligent, rooted in a rigorous study of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation; and inviting, with 40 insightful, well-planned 20–30 minute daily exercises; and prayerful, with 40 original prayers that capture each day’s insight into the deep, spiritual work of the Holy Spirit.

“Jack Levison’s lively new book 40 Days with the Holy Spirit is an engaging devotional that invites the Christian community to be reacquainted with the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit. I read it as a Pentecostal pastor/theologian and it provoked me to consider anew how the Spirit is actively at work in my life and in the world. Though there are differences in pneumatology within the body of Christ, all who read this book will have to affirm that the Spirit is moving and Jack has caught its zeal!”—Johnathan E. Alvarado, Senior Pastor, Grace Church International, and Professor of Theology, Beulah Heights University, Atlanta, Georgia

"Jack Levison's new devotional will guide you into the theme of the Holy Spirit in Scripture, aiming for spiritual formation, not just spiritual information. My favorite part: the simple prayers at the end of each reading. A beautiful, accessible, and soul-nourishing resource!" —Brian D. McLaren, Author of We Make the Road by Walking

“Jack Levison combines a scholar's intimate knowledge of scripture with a born writer's mastery of nuance, style, empathy and humor. Every page of this book brims with reverence for God and common-sense wisdom won the hard way.” —David Laskin, author of The Family

“40 Days with the Holy Spirit opens a door for all seekers, religious and irreligious, to experience ‘God’s Spirit-breath within.’ This is more than a must read-its food for busy and hungry hearts.”—Dr. Michael Rakes, Pastor at Winston Salem First

“Is it possible to live a Spirit-filled life amid our daily distractions and demands? Jack Levison assures us it is and offers a path to wisdom through stillness and abandonment…This book leads us to the ultimate Source, the Spirit. It is a guide not just for 40 days, but a lifetime.” —Judith Valente, Correspondent, Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and author of The Art of Pausing

“Jack Levison brings together scholarship, Scripture meditation, concrete practices, and compelling inspiration. He helps us retrieve the tragically lost centrality of the Holy Spirit in the mainline Christian world. Here comes the return of the fire and the wind!” —Fr. Richard Rohr, ofm

"Jack Levison’s book is not an overly intellectual look at the Holy Spirit, but really examines what it means to live a Spirit-filled life. A needed resource for those looking to be guided by the Holy Spirit found in Scripture. Jack opens our minds to the fullness of the Holy Spirit and removes the human limitations that we often place on this person of the Trinity, teaching us to hear and obey as God speaks."— Dr. John M. Perkins, Co-founder of the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA), Founder and President Emeritus of the John and Vera Mae Perkins Foundation

Review
If you think that the Holy Spirit’s only “big day” was Pentecost, think again. In 40 Days with the Holy Spirit, Jack Levison artfully and intelligently unpacks the Holy Spirit’s works throughout the entire Bible (and today) in a 40 day devotional format. Adults and church groups alike will be inspired along a journey of knowing the Holy Spirit better. Framing the book are seven verbs that Levison uses for the devotions:
Breathe… Pray … Practice … Learn … Lead … Build … Blossom

Levison chooses passages that are both well-known for the presence of the Holy Spirit (Pentecost, for example), as well as passages in which it can be inferred that the Holy Spirit is at work.

For me, this balance of passages was one of the most interesting aspects of the book: I came to faith in a more charismatic community and now worship in a more meditative community. I was encouraged to find a Holy Spirit book that deals with both the wind whispers and the dramatic fire of the Spirit’s presence in different situations. This balance also provides an inspiring growth edge for people of either worship style.

Make sure to get your hands on these two excellent books before Pentecost to add wind and fire to your journey with the Holy Spirit! —Alexis Cruza, Building Faith

Alvarado, Senior Pastor, Grace Church International, Atlanta, Georgia, Professor of Theology, Beulah Heights University, Atlanta, Georgia

Jack Levison’s new book 40 Days With the Holy Spirit is filled with insights about the Holy Spirit. The book is divided into several brief meditations on the Spirit — and the language the Scriptures use to speak of the Spirit’s role.
And, in reading this new book, I came across a insight about the passage above that was new to me. I am quite familiar with the passage that reads: “When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Some scholars call this the Johannine Pentecost — the Gospel of John’s way of speaking of the coming of the Holy Spirit into the lives of the Christian believers. More traditional believers have had some difficulty reconciling this bestowal of the Holy Spirit with the later event of Pentecost — wondering when the Spirit really came upon the first disciples of Jesus.
But, I had never looked closely at the language used here. The typical translation “he breathed on them” (understandably) tones down the language. It really says: “he breathed into them and said….” Levison writes:
But translators usually avoid the appalling intimacy of inbreathing by saying Jesus “breathed on them,” in the way, I suppose, we might breathe on our glasses or a mirror before cleaning them with a rag. This is a mistake.
Indeed it is. Looking at the passage more closely, I discovered that the language here is quite interesting — just as Levison says. When I looked up the verb used in verse 22 for “breathed” I discovered that it was ?μφυσ?ω — a word that means “to blow or breathe into, inflate” [Mounce Greek Dictionary]. Levison writes:
Breathing into someone is more intimate, more intense, more indiscreet than breathing on could ever be.
And, he also cites places in the Greek translation of the Old Testament Scriptures (called the Septuagint or LXX) were this verb ?μφυσ?ω appears. It appears in Genesis 2:7 where it speaks of God breathing life into the first human being: ?νεφ?σησεν ε?ς τ? πρ?σωπον α?το? πνο?ν ζω?ς (“breathed into his face the breath of life“). It appears again in 1 Kings 17:17-24 when the prophet Elijah lays on the widow’s dead son, face to face, and breathes life back into him. In the Septuagint it reads κα? ?νεφ?σησεν τ? παιδαρ?? τρ?ς (“and he breathed into the boy three times“). It appears in Ezekiel 37:9-10 when, in the prophet’s vision, the Spirit of God enters into the dry bones to bring them back to life: ?μφ?σησον ε?ς το?ς νεκρο?ς το?τους (“breathe into these corpses“). Levison writes:
In each case, Spirit-breath enters into a body to bring it to life. Adam, once dust, now pulses with life. The widow’s son, once dead, comes alive, turning a mother’s bereavement to delight and praise. Israel, once a hopeless heap of bleached bones, turns not a nation looking to its future. And, finally, in a private upper room, it occurs again. This time, Jesus gives to his friends the newfound authority of the Spirit, to forgive or not — but not from arms length. The very personal act of inbreathing turns into a fresh call for his frightened and timid friends.
That is a remarkable new insight into that passage of Scripture that I must confess, I hadn’t looked at it that closely before.
This insight is found already in Day 6 of Levison’s 40 Days With the Holy Spirit. I am looking forward to many more insights to come. The book is well adapted for use by individuals in personal study or by church study groups. It might be a good thing to read during the 40 days of Lent. —Craig L. Adams

As with many Paraclete books, the book is shaped for the church calendar and this one for Lent, but this book far transcends Lent. It is for personal spiritual formation. What matters perhaps most about the Holy Spirit is that we don’t “get” the Spirit conceptually and internally all at once (even if you are charismatic!) but we need to learn about the Spirit more and more. We learn not by cramming it all into one session — grabbing a concordance, a dictionary and a big theological book — but by daily long term routine exposure.
Jack’s book is designed to do that: 40 days. Stories, good Bible study, and a prayer at the end of each short chapter.
Gathered around seven verbs and these verbs organize the themes of the book:
breathing, praying, practicing, learning, leading, building, and blossoming.
This is a devotional … by a world class Bible scholar… and he’s not pandering to anyone’s theology … and he opens the Bible and lets the Spirit turn chaos into order. —Scot McKnight

For the large majority of Christians, the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost is the third person (hypostasis) of the Trinity: the "Triune God" manifested as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; each person itself being God. The New Testament includes over 90 references to the Holy Spirit. All three Synoptic Gospels proclaim blasphemy against the Holy Spirit as the unforgivable sin. The Holy Spirit plays a key role in the Pauline epistles. In the Johannine writings, three separate terms, "Holy Spirit", "Spirit of Truth", and "Paraclete" are used. The New Testament details a close relationship between the Holy Spirit and Jesus during his earthly life and ministry. The Gospels of Luke and Matthew and the Nicene Creed state that Jesus was "conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary". The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus as a dove during his baptism, and in his Farewell Discourse after the Last Supper Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit to his disciples after his departure. The theology of the Holy Spirit is called pneumatology. "40 Days with the Holy Spirit" will inspire you to encounter God in fresh and surprising ways. You'll develop stronger spiritual muscles as you breathe, read, reflect, and pray -- all with an eye to cultivating a relationship with the least familiar member of the Trinity. "40 Days with the Holy Spirit" is interactive, offering the opportunity to write and pray each day; intelligent, rooted in a rigorous study of scripture, from Genesis to Revelation; and inviting, with 40 insightful, well-planned 20-30 minute daily exercises; and prayerful, with 40 original prayers that capture each day's insight into the deep, spiritual work of the Holy Spirit. "40 Days with the Holy Spirit" is very highly recommended to the attention of all Christians regardless of their denominational affiliation. It should be noted that "40 Days with the Holy Spirit" is also available in a Kindle edition ($9.95). —Midwest Book Review

Christians are people of the Spirit.  Since the day of Pentecost, we have acknowledged that the Spirit of God plays a central role in the Christian faith. It is true that the Holy Spirit seems marginalized in the creeds, and great effort has been undertaken by church authorities to keep the Spirit under wraps, but without the Spirit Christianity is simply a gathering of dry bones. The doctrine of the Holy Spirit stands as a reminder that we are not alone in our journey through life. God is with us, breathing divine life into our human lives.

Levison uses seven verbs—Breathing, Praying, Practicing, Learning, Leading, Building, Blossoming—to organize the forty meditations, with the final meditation set apart under the moniker "Looking Ahead."  Levison points out that there is a sequencing to this layout, leading “from deep within to the world outside” (p. xvii).  We start with our inner life and gradually move outward into the world. Due to his desire that we finish the course set before us, he offers us directions – first plan out when you will engage the book, find an appropriate place (I don’t think my choice of my desk chair is what he had in mind, but it worked), have a pen (I used pencil), and finally notice the patterns that develop in your spiritual life. Oh, and patience—if you miss a day, he says, don’t worry, just come back when you can. The point is keeping on with the journey.

Forty days is often linked to Lent, and this makes for an excellent Lenten devotional exercise. It is, as I said, how I read it. That said, it can be used productively at any time of the year. It should prove valuable at any time that one wishes to devote forty days to a journey with the Spirit. In the course of the forty days you will have the opportunity to be engaged the Holy Spirit and learn of the Spirit’s practices and teachings. Because the Spirit is so often linked to Pentecostalism, many Christians are leery about exploring the Spirit and the Spirit’s blessings. With this in mind Levison is an excellent guide to a life in the Spirit that is often quiet in its expression, but which will lead to a deeper encounter with God.  As he notes the journey moves from deep within to the world outside. It is a call to grow in faith and practice. It is an experience worth embracing, and I found it a deeply enriching and rewarding experience, which meant that I completed the journey. —Robert Cornwall, Ponderings on a Faith Journey

Levison, who teaches Old Testament at Perkins School of Theology, has made a career of studying Spirit in scripture. He puts his significant learning in accessible form in this book intended for use as inspirational reading over a 40-day period, which could be used for Lent or any time of year. Whenever they think of Spirit, Christians are inclined to think of Pentecost, baptismal liturgy, gifts of the Spirit—or noisy charismatics. Levison shows that there is so much more about the Spirit that can enrich our thinking about the God who is Spirit. The Spirit is involved in the biblical story from the outset: in the first creation story in Genesis it was the Spirit who brooded over the primordial chaos. It is God’s spirit that gives each person breath. The simple prayers Levison offers at the end of each day’s reading are themselves worthy of meditation. —The Christian Century

I think I could sit at a table talking about the Holy Spirit with Dr. Jack Levison for hours. The way that he thinks and writes is ever engaging and many of the questions and concerns he poses go on to raise countless hours of reflection. Those of you who are into pneumatology will likely know of Inspired: The Holy Spirit and the Mind of Faith and Filled with the Spirit, not to mention a few of his other books.
40 Days with the Holy Spirit Jack’s latest book is 40 Days with the Holy Spirit: Fresh Air for Every Day (I’m going to refer to the author as “Jack” rather than his last name simply because I think this fits with the type of book we’re looking at; this is not a sign of disrespect!). The publisher states that this new devotional “inspires daily, fresh and surprising encounters with God.” Eugene Peterson writes that this new book “is conspicuous for its lively, down-to-earth conversation.”
I think these two statements are quite accurate. Jack had me when he writes:

While 40 Days is certainly ecumenical and can’t be pigeon holed by a “charismatic” or “non-charismatic” label, I would like to suggest that those of us who identify with (p)entecostalism or the (c)harismatic movement will have a rich resource to within 40 Pages. Jack may not consider himself a Pentecostal but this devotional assumes the reality of the Holy Spirit in the life of God’s people. Furthermore, Jack maintains a balanced approach to the natural and supernatural which those of us in the Vineyard might call the “now and not yet.”
All in all, 40 Days is highly recommended. You will not be disappointed as you engage with the Spirit over the course of forty days. You’ll deepen your awareness of the Spirit’s presence, thicken your understanding of Scripture, find helpful practical ways to consider a variety of related topics, and experience some life-giving encounters with the living God. I fully intend to now go through this with my wife and children over the summer.
—Luke Geraty, Think Theology

“Jack Levison brings together scholarship, Scripture meditation, concrete practices, and compelling inspiration. He helps us retrieve the tragically lost centrality of the Holy Spirit in the mainline Christian world. Here comes the return of the fire and the wind!” —Fr. Richard Rohr, ofm

What might happen in our lives and our congregations if we gave more attention to the Holy Spirit? Jack Levison has been asking that question for many years as a scholar and teacher. In fact, few biblical scholars have given as much attention to the Holy Spirit as Levison who teaches biblical Hebrew at Perkins School of Theology. This is not a scholarly book, though it is grounded in a wealth of scholarship. This is a book designed to guide readers into greater understanding of the Holy Spirit. As the author puts it, “It’s intended to prompt you to reflect at your own pace and to absorb, slowly and deliberately, the presence of the Holy Spirit in your life, your community of faith and the world.” Within the biblical universe the Spirit is the One who gives power to sustain faith, courage to face fears and conviction to speak boldly. This same Spirit is alive now. This book of 40 daily devotions is designed to be a practice that will both increase your learning about the Spirit but more importantly expand your experience of the Spirit. Read—meditate—reflect—breathe—pray. This is the pattern of the book; it’s a pattern that leads inward, outward and back again. What might happen in our lives and our congregations if we gave more attention to the Holy Spirit? Find out. —Roy W. Howard, The Presbyterian Outlook

Review
Jack Levison’s book is not an overly intellectual look at the Holy Spirit, but really examines what it means to live a Spirit-filled life. A needed resource for those looking to be guided by the Holy Spirit found in Scripture. Jack opens our minds to the fullness of the Holy Spirit and removes the human limitations that we often place on this person of the Trinity, teaching us to hear and obey as God speaks. — Dr. John M. Perkins, Co-founder of the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA), Founder and President Emeritus of the John and Vera Mae Perkins Foundation

Jack Levison studies, meditates, prays and writes of the place of the Holy Spirit in our lives with more skill and understanding than anyone I know.  —Eugene Peterson, from the foreword

I found myself going back into the rear view mirror a lot and seeing His handiwork in years past and recognizing His presence in
By David C. McNair
His format requires you to daily read scripture, then his meditation, and then write your reflection, which requires some deep thinking. I found myself going back into the rear view mirror a lot and seeing His handiwork in years past and recognizing His presence in awesome situations and offering thanks all over again. Top notch content and format. Well worth it; 40 days of growth.

The Spirit for all of Life

40 Days with the Holy Spirit by Jack Levison

If you know Jack Levison, you know that he is chalk full of good writing on the Holy Spirit. In his new book, 40 Days with the Holy Spirit, he boils down some very good devotions for us to meditate on the Holy Spirit. The book combines scriptural passages, prayers, even exercises for us to work through, giving us a fully orbed view of the Holy Spirit. Overall, the book is simple yet profound, small but weighty, challenging yet understandable. Jack gives us grace here, challenges us to see the Spirit’s work as overwhelming, but also reigns us in to see how the Bible comes alive with witness to the Spirit.

Jack gets to the uneasiness of sonship and slavery by writing, “I’m not so sure I understand this contrast because sometimes I am stuck in the middle between sonship and slavery, like a domestic on a British landowner’s estate, consigned to drudgery downstairs in order to serve people upstairs. I’m not quite a slavey but not exactly a son, I inhabit a world where I am free to go but also obligated to stay, to get the job done day in and day out…God’s passion for you isn’t a response to your expert attention to obligations. God’s passion lies in a primal love for us, sons and daughters who respond in faith with only one word that matters: Abba (39-40)!” Jack gets to the heart of the weightiness of life’s frenetic pace and our familial relationship to God with this quote. Yet, he brings us back to God’s love.

Jack points us to a wonderful thing in speaking about the Spirit and truth on Day 19. He writes, “Jesus teaches that study and spirituality, a vibrant spiritual life and a life of learning, go hand in hand (71).” Should we pray earnestly for fruits of the spirit and spiritual gifts? Yes. But, in spirit and truth we worship God, and this involves learning the great truths of the faith. Learning does not necessarily impede the outpouring of spiritual gifts but enhances our spiritual experience of God. Truth and Spirit are two sides of the same coin, two elements in worship that are never to be torn apart.

You will be encouraged by this book, by the prayers alone, and your own wrestling with and reflecting upon the Holy Spirit.
