A Day Brightener

I have treasured the "Ideals" magazines for years and this one was every bit a delight to have. I bought an extra one to give to a friend. These magazines are timeless and I have several back issues which I refer to when I need something for a group's devotions. Past issues cover other seasons, too, but recently I have been getting just Christmas and Easter, and will now check Amazon to see if there will be other season issues in the future.

Excelente libro para adoradores. Abrira tus ojos sobrenaturalmente y si pones en practica lo aprendido tu adoracion no sera ya dirigida desde la tierra, sino desde lugares celestiales.

The winds of change are all around us...

I found this book to be engrossing with some important life lessons. The main character is challenged in ways he had not expected or could have ever predicted. Was encounter with the old man a dream or was it real? It is an interesting twist that add mystery to the storyline.

Michael appears to have it all- a loving family, business success and financial security. Through his new revelations, he is presented with the opportunity to change a future that is destined for tragedy and heartache. He challenges himself to accept where he is placing his loyalty and how he can make better choices.

The message is hopeful and inspiring, offering the opportunity for second chances. Well-written and insightful.

I enjoyed reading this story and the reminders it brings of what’s important in life. At times we get caught up in our days and take things for granted. Sometimes an unexpected interruption makes life interesting and you reflect how your choices can impact your fragile life.

The story is artfully conveyed and you’ll wonder if Michael will ultimately make the right choices. The author will captivate you as he unfolds the story line and creates a dynamic dialogue, and interesting circumstances between all the engaging characters. You will enjoy the depth of noble lessons written in this story line. I recommend you read this inspirational book!

Life is a string of choices

I read some non-fiction books by Mark Arnold and was pleased to find he now wrote a novel. And what novel it is! As can be expected from this author it is a Christian life story, full of life lessons, but I was pleasantly surprised about the way he crafted the material into a really interesting read. Will Michael make the right choices after his encounter with the mysterious old man who bears the same name? I won’t give it away. Life is a string of choices. Indeed.

About the Author
Author Russ Voris served in the US Air Force from 1950 to 1974, with a one-year interim period in 1954. He spent most of his military career in many varied assignments: three tours in England (10 years); an eighteen-month tour in France; three different assignments in Texas; and a 14-1/2-month tour in the Philippines. In the latter assignment, he taught middle school students at Clark AFB (part-time) while prepping for his teaching certificate, and at the same time taking graduate courses at Philippine Islands University. Russ met his future wife, Anne, on his first assignment in England in 1952, and married her in July 1953. They were blessed with two sons (both Notre Dame grads – Go Irish!). Both sons endured continuous uprooting and displacement due to various military reassignments. A convert to the faith since 1957 (in England), Russ has a deep love for the traditions of the Holy Catholic Church and shares these with those whom he meets. His son Michael operates and produces the content for an independent Catholic news site: churchmilitant.com. This online resource for all things Catholic is available to all Catholics who wish to learn and love their faith more deeply. Others are invited to join in and listen if they desire. Illustrator Bernadette Remski (age 14) is one of 8 children raised on the Catholic faith, and she herself lives on a small farm. She and her sister Mary have two donkeys named Rosie and Juliette, so they know how to work with stubborn wills. A unique and well-written story of what comes next for those who believe in Christ and those who do not.

This is an extremely well-written and detailed fictional story about the coming of the Rapture and Jesus Christ fulfilling God’s promises of ridding the world of evil. I found myself captivated by the story and intrigued to find out more. As a Christian myself, my own questions echoed many of the characters depicted in this book and I found many answers while I followed the main character, Barbara, through her journey. This is a very unique story and I would recommend it to readers of any age who believe in God’s great love for us and His plan for our lives. I would also recommend it to readers who are curious about the Christian faith and why they might want to dig deeper into learning about God. While none of us truly know what comes next, this story does an amazing job of giving us a sense of what could possibly be coming, along with Biblical evidence to support it.

Not like all the others!

I read this book in one sitting. It is well-written, and isn't your average "Rapture" story. This is the story of AFTER the Rapture. If you just like a good read, this will do it. If you are searching, this book will help you examine your faith. Either way, it's a great read. I highly recommend it.

What a wonderful read from John Piper. I highly recommend this book to all pastors and their wives. This really encouraged me in the ministry. Being able to understand the issues, problems and the joys associated with ministry from one of the greats is an inspiration. Thank you Dr. Piper for your personal touches and experience from your 33 years of ministry.

This is the second book I’ve read about Charles Spurgeon this year, and this short book by John Piper certainly has some similarities to Zack Eswine’s excellent Spurgeon’s Sorrows: Realistic Hope for Those Who Suffer from Depression. Piper writes “The question for pastors is not, “How do you live through unremitting criticism and distrust and accusation and abandonment?”—but, How do you preach through it? How do you do heart work when the heart is under siege and ready to fall?”

Piper offers seven reasons why Spurgeon is a model saint for modern saints. He writes that Spurgeon knew the whole range of adversity that most preachers suffer—and a lot more.

He writes about the impact on Spurgeon of a tragedy that took place when he was preaching at age twenty-two, when someone shouted “Fire!” and seven people were killed in a stampede, with many injured. Spurgeon also dealt with a wife who at age thirty-three became a virtual invalid, could no longer have children, and seldom heard her husband preach for the next 27 years until his death.
Spurgeon himself suffered from gout, rheumatism, and Bright’s disease (inflammation of the kidneys). The diseases eventually took his life at age 57. In addition to the physical suffering, Spurgeon had to endure a lifetime of public ridicule and slander, sometimes of the most vicious kind.

Spurgeon also had recurrent battles with depression, which Spurgeon said was his “worst feature.” Spurgeon saw three specific purposes of God in his struggle with depression.

Piper writes that there are innumerable strategies of grace in the life of Spurgeon, and then shares a few of them.

This short book will be most helpful to pastors.

Especially Encouraging for a Pastor

Charles Spurgeon: Preaching through Adversity was a fairly short book. I was able to read this book in just a few sittings. It was really well written, and as it is with most of John Piper's books, the shortness of the book didn't equate to a lack of any kind.

I was initially intrigued by this book because of the title. I hadn't realized that Charles Spurgeon faced such adversity. It probably shouldn't have surprised me. I have always admired the sermons of Spurgeon's, that I have had the opportunity to read, but I really didn't know much about his personal life. This book really filled in the realities of his hardships.

Piper does a wonderful job of using relevant quotes and other examples to pull together the reality of Spurgeon's trials, but more importantly, to answer the question, "How did he continue to preach through this adversity?" As I read through this book I felt that I was really entering into Spurgeon's life.

As a Pastor myself, I found great comfort in this book. It kept pointing me back to great realities and infinite truths that, when believed, bring great comfort and encouragement. Most specifically the truths of God's Sovereignty and the doctrines of God's Great Unmerited Grace!

As the book drew to a close, I found myself... not simply admiring Charles Spurgeon... but glorying in my real hero: Jesus. This is precisely what John Piper desires to accomplish, and I can't help but think that Spurgeon would be pleased with this book as well, because the hero of Charles H. Spurgeon's story isn't Charles H. Spurgeon but Christ.

Excellently written book!!! The emotional details are related to miscarriages; however, they can easily be ascribed to any misfortune that life brings. The author does a wonderful job describing, in an easily-followed chronological fashion, her life-changing disappointments and how God helped her heal both emotionally and physically. Fantastic book for anyone experiencing life's challenges. Kudos to Ms. Yopp !!!!

The Bible on a string...

When I attended Catholic school as a child, I found saying the rosary to be a chore and usually something that I had to do when I was in trouble. As an adult, it has been recommended that I take another look at this practice and I haven't found anyone who details it better than author Piper Scheck. By placing praying the rosary in a whole new light, Scheck is able to displace misconceptions about this beautiful prayer and place it back into the reader's hands for meditation and spiritual growth - where it should be. I loved the added history lesson on the prayer and practice as well as the colorful images included in the book. Very well done.

Some people need a little brush up on how to do it correctly. And some are at a loss as to how to begin. Scheck does an excellent job of breaking it all down.

She also includes clear, colorful images that represent the prayers that should be said and how often. To further support how to pray the Rosary, Scheck includes the text of the prayers. It's not filled with esoteric language that will make your head spin; instead, it's written in everyday language that is quick and easy to read. The guide starts off by explaining what exactly the Rosary is before moving onto the Rosary's fascinating history (it dates back to 1214 A.D.). There are also quotes from famous people about the Rosary. The bulk of the guide, however, is the Rosary prayers organized by the day of the week. They are formatted in a way that is easy on the eyes and easy to follow. Recommended to anyone who wants a practical guide on the Rosary!

Lots of GRACE and lots of TRUTH in this book!

The phrase “grace and truth” is used by John twice in his prologue (1:14, 17), and it aptly describes the contents of Dr. Michael Halsey’s book, THE GOSPEL OF GRACE AND TRUTH: A THEOLOGY OF GRACE FROM THE GOSPEL OF JOHN. While there are already many books available on John’s Gospel and its theology, what sets this book apart is its insight into John’s constant and clear emphasis on grace—the unmerited favor of God towards those who desire the opposite, namely, His just judgment. Though the word “grace” occurs only four times in John's Gospel in three verses—all in the prologue (1:14, 16, 17)—God’s grace permeates this Gospel through the life, sign-miracles, and teaching of the Lord Jesus, since Christ Himself was the personal embodiment and revelation of God’s grace to mankind. This emphasis of Christ's life is caught by Halsey and accurately conveyed to the reader of this book.

Dr. Halsey’s book may best be described as a biblical theology of John’s Gospel since it is neither a verse-by-verse commentary, nor is it a book on systematic theology. Rather, Halsey uses the major categories of systematic theology to exposit John’s message regarding the Bible, Christ, the Holy Spirit, Angels, Mankind, Salvation, the Church, and Last Things. In addition, Halsey gives the introductory background of John’s Gospel covering its date, authorship, literary features, narrative structure, flow, and themes. However, readers of this book will discover that this is not a dry, theological tome. The content and emphasis on grace makes it not only scholarly and informative but very edifying. The book is easy to read due to Halsey’s witty, engaging, and illustrative style of writing.

The Gospel of John is one of the most beloved and influential books of the Bible. Those seeking to become better acquainted with John's Gospel will find THE GOSPEL OF GRACE AND TRUTH to be an excellent companion and resource. The book is suitable either for classroom use or personal enrichment.

Awesome book on John's Gospel

Wow! The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ comes shining through in such a refreshing and encouraging way in this book.

I learned a lot reading through this book, yet it hardly seemed like I was learning theology at the same time. Dr. Halsey seems to have a unique ability to take a deep subject, like the doctrines of John's Gospel, and write about them in such an interesting, witty, and engaging way.

Though THE GOSPEL OF GRACE AND TRUTH has a scholarly, almost textbook feel to it, i was able to breeze through it rather quickly.

This book gave me a deeper understanding and appreciation for the grace of God, not only in the area of Christology (the study of Christ) and Soteriology (the study of salvation), but in every areas of theology in the Gospel of John. If you love the Lord Jesus Christ, the Gospel of John, and the grace of God, you'll love this book too.
