About the Author
Adam S. Miller is a professor of philosophy at Collin College in McKinney, Texas and the author of six books. He earned a BA in Comparative Literature from Brigham Young University and a MA and PhD in Philosophy from Villanova University. His first four books were written for academic audiences and they explore, from a variety of perspectives, new ways of thinking about "grace" as an ordinary, this-worldly phenomenon. His fifth book, "Letters to a Young Mormon," is the first to be written and published for a general audience. His newest book, "Grace Is Not God's Backup Plan" is also intended for a popular audience. Miller is co-editor a series of books for the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship at Brigham Young University entitled "Groundwork: Studies in Theory and Scripture" and serves as the director of the Mormon Theology Seminar. He was a co-owner and co-founder of Salt Press, a promising independent press recently acquired by the Maxwell Institute. Miller has been interviewed about his academic work on public radio and a variety of podcasts. He blogs at the "Times and Seasons," "The Church and Postmodern Culture," and "Speculative Non-Buddhism" websites. He participates regularly in regional, national, and international conferences that address religious themes. He has organized three professional conferences. He has published more than twenty articles, reviews, and essays in a variety of journals and venues and delivered more than forty conference presentations since earning his doctorate in 2005. He was named "Best Essayist" in 2011 by the Association for Mormon Letters.

I suddenly felt like Paul was speaking to me

Miller achieves the task he sets for himself admirably: to provide a paraphrase of Romans that is thoroughly readable, true to the spirit of the text, and pertinent to the modern context. While by no means a literal translation -- one of the passages most effective for me involve electron fields -- the direction and intent of the Pauline text comes clear in Miller's paraphrase.

Perhaps the most important goal of "Grace Is Not God's Backup Plan" is to perform an act of estrangement: to make something that was familiar brand new, and therefore as powerful again. In part, he does this by making Romans entirely accessible to a modern audience. I was completely taken aback by certain renditions -- for example, by rendering Romans 12 in everyday speech, I suddenly felt like Paul was speaking to me, personally, in a way that I hadn't felt for years. Thus, the value of a faithful but imaginative restatement like Miller's comes clear: what was old becomes new and once again has the power to affect us.

This. Is. GORGEOUS.

Adam Miller's project in this lovely little book is to provide a new translation of Romans, correcting for the tendency of most other English translations to focus on "the letter of the text" rather than "its logic." "Paul's forest," writes Miller, "is always getting sacrificed for the sake of its trees." The result is that Christians frequently misunderstand grace, thinking that God's grace is a response to our sin. We get it entirely backwards, argues Miller. Grace comes first. It is not a cosmic Band-Aid. Grace was the whole plan all along.

This paraphrase is simply spectacular. It is novel and fresh. It brings out the intimacy of Paul's letter and falls on modern ears just as I imagine Paul's original Greek fell on the ears of his contemporaries. I've read a number of books on Paul's Epistle to the Romans, but I've never understood this letter as well as I do after reading Miller's book.

I am now entirely convinced of the "urgency" with which this paraphrase is needed. Read this book. It is gorgeous.

A new light given to the book of Romans

Adam Miller shows a deep understanding of the Scriptures through this translation of Paul's letters to the Romans in his language, and in how he addresses the book as a whole. He brings a new level of clarity to the book of Romans through a personal translation that is not based word for word (or even idea for idea like some translations have done) but rather, by incorporating the whole aspect of Romans--the purpose and placement of grace within our lives--to bring the whole book of Romans to life.

Miller brings the book of Romans to life through his show of the importance of grace. Through his close reading he shares an important insight that Paul shares: Grace is not something that has come about due to our sins or the "fall", but that grace has always been working for us. Furthermore, grace is such an important and rooted part of life that one of the important aspects of it is to seal us to both God and our neighbors. Through Millers idea's (translations) of Paul's view of grace, we can come to better understand the workings of empathy for our neighbors, whether they are similar in thought/action or different than us. Regardless, we find that Paul asks us to accept all, as God has already accepted all, and grace already covers all.

This book is a wonderful addition to any New Testament study. Whether you've read the book of Romans many times, through many different translations, you will gain a whole new view of what Paul was getting at, and the absolute importance of grace, and God's us of grace. Through Adam Millers translation of Romans, we find a unique, relevant, and modern use of Paul's words.

A book of it's kind is long overdue for our generation. Dedicated believers in Jesus Christ, who happen to be professionals in the natural world have been waiting for such a book. Nehemiah people provides the reader with "Continuing Spiritual Education", training and encouragement. It serves many purposes, but perhaps the most profound is the writer's ability to challenge the way our spiritual lives seem to be disconnected from our professional lives in the marketplace. This book shows us that it is possible to marry both and expect results in the marketplace .
The believer is presented with a solid scriptural foundation for ruling and reigning in life with Christ in the marketplace without fear but with supernatural results. The challenges of the 21st Century have placed a demand on believers in Christ to be Proof Producers in the marketplace. Nehemiah people will help every serious professional and believer in Christ to walk in the truth, authority and the convictions of biblical faith in the marketplace successfully and thus produce the proof that Jesus Christ is who He says He is.

Nehemiah People is a phenomenal book!!!!

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ who has ever struggled with the question of whether or not you can be effective as an agent for Kingdom change while working in the marketplace -- you MUST read this book. Paul deals with the issue of how God uses people who are not in "full time ministry" while sharing significant Biblical insights from the life of Nehemiah.

I am a Nehemiah person. I love the Lord, and look for every opportunity to serve Him and advance His Kingdom. I just happen to be called to do it in the marketplace much more frequently than from a pulpit. If YOU are a Nehemiah Person - this book will open your eyes to several principles that will help you to better understand how and why God calls people to serve in the marketplace. More than that, it will encourage you by giving you a better understanding of the principles He can use in your life to equip you for better service.

A diamond in the rough - MUST READ for those serious about walking out their faith in the marketplace

Nehemiah People affirms the calling on my life, almost 40 years ago. It has been a lonely journey - knowing you are called to live your life of faith in the marketplace - seeking to use your vocation as the platform to reach the lost and serve our Lord Jesus Christ, wherever and in whatever capacity that may be.

There are few books that with honest, integrity, solid Scripture and written by one who has lived it out. Os Guiness' book The Call, Redpath's The Making of a Man of God for example - books that are not fads but bear the trial of time and are cornerstones for those who choose to live for Christ, where He has placed your feet. Your calling is not to be taken lightly. Nehemiah People is just such a book and will help fashion and affirm your walk with Christ in the marketplace.

I look forward to the years to come, as rereading it over the years will continue to bring new light to my calling. I highly recommend it to all to read - at least once!

Christen Civiletto is an attorney, author, and adjunct law school professor. She’s passionate about exploring the intersection of faith, environmental justice, and the law, and has devoted tireless efforts to helping others appreciate such a connection. She enjoys staying up on current events, reading great fiction, hiking in South Carolina, and spending quality time with family and friends. Christen experienced a wake-up call after wondering why she and so many other residents in her hometown of Niagara Falls, New York, were dealing with cancer or other terrible diseases. She began to research the area’s environmental history, and her findings led to the writing of Green City Savior—an environmentally themed suspense novel set in Niagara Falls. Ultimately, Christen’s research resulted in the recent filing of a series of lawsuits stemming from the historic Love Canal disaster. Christen previously authored Full Disclosure: The New Lawyer’s Must-Read Career Guide (ALM 2001), a practical mentoring guide for first through fourth year lawyers. She co-authored The Practice of Law School: Getting In and Making The Most of Your Legal Education (ALM 2003). Her articles have appeared in national print and online publications, including The National Law Journal, NYLawyer.com, and law.com. Green City Savior - A Great Read. Highly recommend it!

Green City Savior is a great story at so many levels – full of action, intrigue and suspense, with underlying themes of spiritual awakening and environmental consciousness. Christen Civiletto has crafted a magnificent illustration of God’s power, mystery and ability to reconcile and restore every aspect of His creation physically, spiritually and relationally. This is a must read book for everyone who is intrigued by the truth that there is a sovereign God who orchestrates every detail of our existence in ways that are often beyond human comprehension.

I like a book where

I like a book where, from the beginning, the characters are so vividly presented that you actually care what happens to them. This story begins with the very elderly grandfather telling his life story. He came over on a boat from Italy and became extremely wealthy starting a business up from nothing. He may be a very wealthy man, but he is a man filled with many regrets. He now realizes that how he made his money has affected many people in a very negative way. There is theme of hope and redemption that runs through this story.

Shows the redeeming power of God's love

Niagara Falls, New York is known as a honeymoon hotspot to the world. But to the residents of the historic city it is known as a different type of hot spot. Cancer, diseases, toxic waste are all found here, destroying its economy and people. But hope comes in the form of a residential development, a town within a town called Cascata Verde. The Green City. Based on the promise of clean soil and water, the city of Niagara Falls begins to believe they have found their saviour. When it's discovered the earth is still tormented by radioactive waste, they are confronted by the One who can make all things new, their one true Restorer.

'Green City Savior' (a Green City novel) by Christen Civiletto is a moving story, and truly touched home for me. My own family has lived in the Canadian Niagara region since 1812 and the area is dear to my heart. When the novel presents issues with the environment and how it has affected health, it was amazing how true to life it was and it's very clear that Civiletto is passionate about the issue. The novel is told from a few different points of view which helped depict various aspects of the plot and showed how all things, and people, are connected.

What was best about this novel was the steady increase in how the characters relied on God. Civiletto uses scripture to show how, as Christians (and Jews, since the book of Genesis relates to them too) we have been commissioned by our Creator with the care of this earth. We cursed the ground with our sin, but that does not relieve us of our duty to take care of God's creation. In the end, He is the one who can and will make all things new. This theme was really brought out at the end of the novel.

'Green City Saviour' is a lovely novel demonstrating how our sins have affected the earth, and each other. But what's better is that this is a novel that shows the redeeming power of God's love.

Taking hold of God's overflowing abundance

This is a wonderful book filled with inspiration and encouragement that God has the BEST plan for us and to trust him FULLY. The choice of words paint a beautiful picture that God is the God of overflowing love, incredible joy, fulfillment, beauty, excitement, peace, contentment, unique creations and the list goes on. The author passionately encourages people to take hold of all that God has in store for them.

Throughout the book, Jody weaves her story of a fascinating adventure that God has called her and her family to. Will there be a sequel to let us know how God continues to unfold that chapter in their lives? And why did I have such an urge to go buy a new beautiful bag as I was reading this book? This book obviously inspired me in more than one way.

DAVID AND JASON BENHAM, former professional baseball players, are also nationally acclaimed entrepreneurs. The twin broth-ers' business success earned them a reality show with HGTV, set to air during the 2014 fall season. Had to Put Down My Book And Write This

Only a few chapters into this book and its already so great I had to write a review. This book is an easy read but don't let that fool you because the pages are filled with valuable life principles. The book truly captures the brothers personalities! I don't read books often, but so glad I picked this one up cause it's already a GREAT read! Now, back to my book!
