You can't run from your problems

The thing I picked up on quickly is that while Cora was on her renderings, she had been relatively good. Yes, she wore Englisher clothes, dropped her hair down, but hadn't really been wild. It wasn't until she met smooth talking Matt. Once she was with him, most of what she was involved in was out of fear of Matt's abuse. She was smart enough though to get away and find a way back home.

Cora's second chance came through running into Isaac; an old childhood friend. Isaac has grown up though and cares very deeply for Cora.

When Matt finds Cora and attempts to kill her, Isaac stops him. The police become involved and want Matt for many crimes back in the city. Cora, while in the hospital, tells Isaac the whole story. She figures she will never see him again.

Very good story and an excellent second book for the series.

This was quite a story about young Cora in her running around time to get an idea of what English Life was all about, she did but the worst part of it. How she got mixed up with the wrong people and what developed from it. You must read book 2, to find out what happened. A lesson young and old alike can learn. Happy reading

Enjoyed this book as it finally shows a bit of why teens need to be careful. Actions and consequences that young people may not think important right now.

This author is showing that a good reputation is hard to get back once abused or lost.

People are responsible for their own actions, even if you think that they are 'sick'. TRUTH in the saying you can't save others but tell, ask for help for them safely. The store owner as one example.

I like how there are everyday life experiences you can apply in the story. Sure there is more coming.

Extremely helpful, Gospel-centered, clear devotional for parents to use with children at Easter.

Looking for an easy to use resource for helping your kids go deeper into the Bible story this Easter? Scott James has given us a beautiful resource in his book Mission Accomplished: A Two-Week Family Easter Devotional (New Growth Press, 2015). This book is intended to lead families through a devotional each day the week before and the week following Easter.

I haven’t seen another devotional that is as Gospel-centered and true to the text, nor one as helpful and clearly laid out, as this little two-week devotional.

Each day’s reading is organized as follows: a selection of Scripture to be read, a short devotional (about 1 page), discussion questions (with answers for the parents), a suggestion about what to pray about in response to the lesson, and then either a family activity or a song to sing that is related to the lesson. The activities are usually a craft that is engaging for young minds. The songs are hymns. I appreciate that the text is not included, this will help kids learn to interact with their own Bibles.

The illustrations by A.E. Macha are bright and cheerful, but not overpowering. The insights and connections with the Old Testament (particularly the Passover and the sacrificial lamb), are very helpful and simple enough for young children to understand. I suspect that elementary and middle school children will be most appreciative of the book, but it can be used with even younger children.

I highly recommend this work and trust it will be a blessing to Christian families everywhere.

Great Resource

Mission Accomplished is a new two week family devotional by Scott James that is just in time for Easter. The cross and the resurrection are at the heart of the Christian Gospel and Easter is a perfect time to bring these truths front and center for our families. It is easy to get distracted and forget to focus on the important things and this helps us to refocus our families on the Cross of Christ and His victory over death.

Mission Accomplished is divided into two weeks. Week One: Walking With Jesus to the Cross begins with Palm Sunday and walks with Jesus to the Cross, ending with Jesus in the tomb. Week Two: The Risen King focuses on the resurrection, Jesus on the road to Emmaus with the disciples, the Great Commission, our freedom from sin and our hope in His return.

The layout of Mission Accomplished is helpful in leading a family devotional. "Each devotion includes a Bible passage to read together, notes to help you discuss the passage with your child ("Think About It"), questions and answers to guide your discussion ("Talk About It"), and suggestions for a short time of prayer. Each devotional time could take anywhere form ten to twenty minutes," The days also alternate between a hymn to be sung together and a family activity to do. These devotionals are excellent and provide a great outline for parents to interact with their kids and Scripture over a two-week period. Great family resources are what I have come to expect from New Growth Press and Mission Accomplished meets those expectations. I am definitely looking forward to using this with my family this year.

Excellent 2-week Easter family devotional!

Scott James, pediatric surgeon and devoted father wrote this fourteen day devotional, Mission Accomplished with families in mind. The first week begins with Palm Sunday and ends with "The Dark Day in Between," with Jesus in the tomb. The second week, "when Jesus' rescue mission seems to have failed," focuses on death's defeat and Christ's resurrection. His conversations with the disciples and the "marching orders" Christ gave to the disciples to spread His message to the world, what we know as the "Great Commission."

Devotions begin with scripture to be read aloud or together with featured suggestions to "Think About It." Question and answer prompts in "Talk About It" relate to youngsters experiences and encourage discussion, followed by a brief prayer time. Devotions take ten to twenty minutes and end with either a familiar hymn or another family activity. I've never seen such a useful, biblically sound, simply written family devotional before and highly recommend it.

This book is a MUST READ!

I have been waiting for a book like this for a long time: inspirational in finishing life strong and filled with illustrative photographs that make the author's points come to life. This book will inspire you to use all the Lord has taught you thus far to advance in your faith. You'll find yourself energized in waiting for God to move mountains that have refused to budge in the past. I just received the book and I'm already on the last chapter. I could not wait to order a signed copy for a relative. Bruce does a great job painting a visual picture of what it looks like to press on into the pages of eternity and make your life count. It's a must read for every follower of Christ who desires to leave a powerful legacy.

Finish Well

A senior executive at Focus on the Family, seminary graduate, and seasoned Christian, there was every reason to think that Bruce Peppin should have scaled the mountains of midlife with skill and enthusiasm. However, with his marriage and his family relationships deeply broken and his faith in God taking a nose dive, he realized that he had veered off course. His journey out of despair and defeat is the basis for The Best Is Yet to Be: Moving Mountains in Midlife, his five-part course correction manual for those of us who are hiking through or toward midlife. Just as a mountain climber keeps her eye on the summit, the goal of midlife is to finish well and in accordance with Peppin’s well-framed definition:

“To finish life in right relationship to my God, spouse, family, fellow man, and the work He gave me to do.”

With “gray divorce” at an all-time high, long-term marriage is no longer a given apart from the grace of God and a commitment to faithfulness. Peppin shares vulnerably how the Lord of the Breakthrough turned his own marriage around. Sin and poor judgment calls from the past have a way of cropping up in midlife. One’s own morality looms large, and this question even larger: How have I spent the life God has given?

Using powerful metaphors but plain speech, Peppin challenges his readers to follow six principles for decisions, relationships, and mindset that are essential for midlife, but helpful to have mastered beforehand. (The sooner the better!)
1.Heroic invisibility: Living a life of integrity before an audience of One requires a realization that recognition is not the priority — honoring God is the path to true self-esteem.
2.Famous in heaven: Living according to the standards of heaven, for applause from a heavenly stadium, yields right priorities.
3.Decades not days: Taking a long view toward preparation for future assignments and accepting His timing acknowledges and bows to the sovereignty of God.
4.Be ready: Assess readiness for scaling spiritual mountains by answering the following life-changing question: “If God was looking for someone to use on an important assignment for the kingdom, would you be the one He’d choose, given your present attitude, behavior, and choices?”
5.Drink the cup: Climbing mountain peaks over fourteen thousand feet, Peppin has honed traits of dedication and perseverance. It is tempting to quit before reaching the summit. In the same manner, honoring commitments to the Lord requires the discipline of determination.
6.Faithful to the end: Inspiring testimonies of mentors and historical figures who endured despite obstacles and finished their course in faithfulness to God drive home the point and provide powerful motivation and inspiration.

Apart from Christ, the uphill journey of middle age could seem discouraging and pointless, but the power of God’s Word can transform feelings of rejection, fear, and failure into powerful Christ-exalting expressions of God’s sufficiency. The Best Is Yet to Be challenges the reader to look beyond this life to consider the importance of a godly legacy. As Randy Alcorn has said, “Our present life on earth is the dot. It begins. It ends. It’s brief. But from that dot extends a line that goes on forever. That line is eternity which Christians will spend in heaven . . . Live for the line, not for the dot.” Peppin’s book stopped me in my tracks one afternoon as I considered the outcomes of finishing well: a life of integrity, courage and reward. There is food for thought here, but, more importantly, there is grist for one’s prayer life. “Lord, help me to remember, as I walk through midlife, that there is no reward on earth that can compare with Your well-done.”

Midlife (and life in general) is tough. Parenting, marriage, finances, spirituality. So many people with so many opinions (and a lot of them bad opinions). THANKFULLY, there's Bruce and The Best is Yet To Be.

Bruce does a great job of walking you through these struggles, letting you know it's ok (and normal) to go through them, and offers practical advice on how to navigate (and win) in these areas of your life.

Hope in the Fire

As we are all aware, there are people who are quick to diagnose the reasons for which trials come, and, sometimes, they limit themselves, as Job’s comforters did, to blaming the person who is having the trial: that person, they say, must certainly have sinned, and probably, have sinned very drastically! The Bible, June points out, shows us various causes of trials. In any case, she notes, it is important to focus on what should be our attitudes during trials, how God can be very close to us throughout their duration, and how He is refining us during their process. While not minimizing trials, this booklet, I think, helps! Right now, in fact, I am thinking of at least one person who would probably benefit greatly from a copy and be encouraged by its contents. When we experience trials, it is easy to focus on the difficulties, and to develop a kind of tunnel vision. Ms. Hunt, as always, helps us to take a higher look, and, as always, encourages us to get our spiritual focus right. Help when the Trials show up - and they will

Every believer who is practicing sanctification (as Paul explains it in the Book of Romans) is going to experience trials in their life – in spite of what some of the “name it and claim it”/prosperity gospel TV preachers would have you believe.

I just got through reading Trials: God’s Refining Fire by Christian counselor June Hunt. She pulls no punches and reminds us nowhere in Scripture do we find a mention of easy times. As a matter of fact, Scripture tells us just the opposite.

She has a gift for alteration and uses catchy ways to make her points. For example when she helps us understand why we have trials when we serve a loving God, she points out Christians are “called to be in the crucible” because we are: 1) called to be committed, 2) called to be corrected, 3) called to be courageous, 4) called to conquer and 5) called to be Christ-like.

Each of the points are spelled out thoroughly but the fact she took the extra time to phrase them with all the C’s just makes me want to learn more about what she says.

Maybe a couple of decades of David Letterman have conditioned us to Top 10 lists, but I like them. It helps me to know someone has thought into delivering a message. Her section on 10 Steps to Accepting God’s Sovereignty help answer a multitude of questions on the subject of “why me, Lord?” as well as give practical counsel.

And every point she makes she does so with Scripture. That goes a long way on the credibility scale with me.

I wish I would have had this book when I’ve gone through a trial. But now I’ll have it for the next one.

About the Author
David Baily Harned (PhD, Yale) is a retired professor of religious studies who taught at Williams, Smith, and Allegheny colleges, as well as at the University of Virginia, Louisiana State University, and the University of Edinburgh. In addition, he served as department chairman at Virginia, president of Allegheny, and dean of arts and sciences at LSU. He is the author of eight books, published not only in the United States but also in Scotland, Spain, and India.

A brilliant, highly engaging work in theological ethics.

An exceptionally solid, indeed exciting, contribution to theological ethics. Harned rehabilitates our understanding of and appreciation for an old, even old-fashioned, virtue and forces us to rethink its meaning for us today. His book is unusual, beautifully written, and persuasive. I would think that individual Christians would find this book very helpful and deeply meaningful. The author is a wonderful guide to the moral life and a wise counselor. Highly recommended.

An enduring and timely response to our complicated world

Harned's book is a timely answer to a complicated world in which we admire expediency and demand action.

In investigating this oft-ignored virtue in Biblical traditions, the author makes it clear that patience does not mean accepting social injustice, but recognizing the supremacy of God in the world he created. Waiting is an ancient virtue that we need to embrace anew, Harned argues. In fact, patience is the attribute that ties together other virtues, such as courage, justice, temperance, prudence, hope, humility and gratitude, he says.

This new reprint of the book includes an Afterword by historian David Hein, who ties together four related themes: ethics, leadership, and then the specific examples of patience and George Washington. This approach enables Hein to test the claims Harned makes on behalf of the virtue of patience in the real-world setting and highly consequential actions of the Father of Our Country. The result is a fresh, vigorous, and altogether compelling inquiry which adds much of value both to our understanding of virtue and, indeed, to our grasp of the moral weight of the American Founding. By expanding our understanding of patience, the afterword has the interesting effect of deepening our appreciation of both Washington and virtue in relation to the Revolution and the Founding.

Thoughtful and Practical

This book is a nice treatment of patience and its role in life. While written from a Christian perspective, the book has much to say to anyone interested in what patience is and why it is important to individual and social welfare. I found that reading the book helped me practice patience, because I was more aware perhaps of circumstances in which I'm tempted to be impatient. For that reason alone, it is worth your time to read this book.
