My Thoughts About The Book: I have been a Methodist all my life. I have been a pastor for two years and this book is amazing. I loved the question-and-answer format, and clear, easy to understand writing of the book and found the book to be an excellent resource for me as a lay person and as a pastor. There were a number of questions that all Methodists have asked at one time or another and simple answers to help a young Christian or an aged one find the answers being searched for. This book is a must in every pastor's library and a great help for Sunday School or Bible Study leaders. Loved it!

Solid. Biblical. Practical.

Oh man!!! Where to begin! My husband and I ordered this book knowing it would be great! Truly this is a keeper. Practical Truths were shared and powerful illustrations of what it looks like when we preach (teach) for God alone. I believe my eyes were opened by Piper's personal examples of relying on God and trusting Him in every part of His preaching. Even though we "know" we are to rely solely on the Holy Spirit. It was still very humbling for this teacher/preacher duo to read and reflect on how we are not trusting God to sustain us I'm doing the work He, Himself called us to. I would and already have suggested this to many already.

One of the best books on preaching.

John Piper’s The Supremacy of God in Preaching get’s better with every new edition. It’s amazing that lines like “preaching is expository exultation” weren’t in the first edition. Piper clearly lays out the aim of this book, “My burden in these pages is to plead for the supremacy of God in preaching—that the dominant note of preaching be the freedom of God’s sovereign grace, that the unifying theme be the zeal that God has for his own glory, that the grand object of preaching be the infinite and inexhaustible being of God, and that the pervasive atmosphere of preaching be the holiness of God” (23-24). He then argues for this plea in the way he structures his book.

Piper splits his book into two parts. The first is his argument for why God should be supreme in preaching, and in the second he demonstrates how to make God supreme in preaching with guidance from the ministry of Jonathan Edwards. The first part contains four chapters: The Goal of Preaching: The Glory of God, The Ground of Preaching: The Cross of Christ, The Gift of Preaching: The Power of the Holy Spirit, and The Gravity and Gladness of Preaching. Part two contains three chapters: Keep God Central: The Life of Jonathan Edwards, Submit to Sweet Sovereignty: The Theology of Edwards, and Make God Supreme: The Preaching of Edwards.

The Same God Different Pulpits The sermons in this book were preached in three different churches. I strive to make the sermons relevant to the congregation so to understand them, let me tell you about the churches. I first served Douglas Presbyterian Church in Lancaster South Carolina. This church has about 100 people in worship and it was centered in the middle of farmlands. The church was truly a family, but it was a family under stress due to the closing of Springs Industries, which was the main employer of the town. The second church was Old First Church in Huntington, and the differences between Old First and Douglas were like night and day. Old First had about 150 people in worship, and these folks were mainly well to do and well educated. Also gone was the farmland to be replaced by suburban sprawl found in Long Island. The concerns, the attitude, and the relationship between pastor and congregation were much different than what I was used to and at times very painful for me. These forces affected my sermons. The church I am serving now, Westminster United Presbyterian Church, as an interim, is a small family church with about 55 in worship. Together we are seeking God’s will for this place and looking toward the future. This church is truly a family church where people care for each other and the community.

It must be noted that in all four states, man is free to choose what to do or not to do according to his will. His will is free because it is not forced or compelled from without. However, his will is determined by his own moral inclinations. This means that while the glorified man will always choose to do good because his heart’s inclination is always to glorify God; the natural fallen man will always do what is evil (in God’s eyes), because his motives are never pure, and never to glorify God.

Before the Fall, man was able to choose to do either good or evil, his heart, and so his inclination and disposition, being innocent and not tainted by sin. But Adam’s state was mutable and when Satan tempted Eve, and then through Eve, tempted him, he chose to sin against God by eating the forbidden fruit and so fell from the estate of innocency.

They will behold that glorious blessed body, which is personally united to the divine nature, and exalted above principalities and powers and every name that is named. There we shall see, with our eyes, that very body which was born of Mary at Bethlehem, and crucified at Jerusalem between two thieves: the blessed head that was crowned with thorns; the face that was spit upon; the hands and feet that were nailed to the cross; all shining with inconceivable glory.” ~Thomas Boston

About the Author
Thomas Boston (1676-1732) was a Scottish Puritan and church leader. Educated at Edinburgh, he became the minister of a small parish in 1699. In 1704 he came across Edward Fisher's Marrow of Modern Divinity, a compendium of the opinions of leading Reformation divines on the doctrine of grace and the offer of the Gospel. Boston later published an edition of The Marrow with notes of his own.

In my estimation, this discourse is among the Kindle e-book's "must read" category. Thomas Boston's (1676 -1732) understanding of the human nature in its fourfold state was, no doubt, influenced and in agreement with that same subject discussed in Chapter IX of the Westminster Confession of Faith (1647); Man in a state of innocence (IX, 2), Man in a fallen and sinful state (IX, 3), Man in a state of grace (IX, 4), and Man in a state of glory (IX, 5). This e-book entry provides a cogent development of this theological teaching. A few sample quotes include:

"In the way of the gospel, the sinner must stand before the Lord in an imputed righteousness--but corrupt nature is for an inherent righteousness; and, therefore, so far as natural men follow after righteousness, they follow after `the law of righteousness,' Romans 9:31, 32; and not after `the Lord our righteousness.'"

"The infinity of God makes infinite wrath the just demerit of sin. God is infinitely displeased with sin; and when he acts, he must act like himself, and show his displeasure by proportionable means."

These two quotes alone should encourage the reader to devour what follows in the book: those sections on the state of grace and the eternal state.

Since there is no active table of contents provided, it is suggested that on the initial reading of the text, the reader establish a table of contents with locations in a computer spread-sheet so as to facilitate later readings of this material.

A "must read" for all true Christians

This book is one of the hundreds written by the English Puritans for the instruction and edification of Christians who love the Faith in all its Reformation glory and fullness. I consider it an essential book for all who wish to understand the foundational truths of the Bible regarding the status of mankind from Creation until entrance into Glory, i.e., Innocence, the Fall of Man, the believer's present state of Grace, and our final state in Heaven, including, of course, the concomitant rejection by God of those who will not receive His Son.

This is not a "quick read" as so many of today's productions are. It requires careful and thoughtful reading and meditation, but will surely reward the one dedicated to understanding the deep things of God.

A Must Read

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Thomas Boston had incredible insight to the workings of the flesh and just how far it would go to earn salvation. If you don't read anywhere else read pages 268 - 279 and ask yourself if you have had this experience. I believe that real Christianity today is rare indeed and I believe when the Rapture of the Church takes place it will be so few that will be taken that it won't even make the headlines. Read these pages slowly and meditate on what he is saying and please let it speak to your heart like it did mine many years ago.

"Dr. J. M. Carroll, the author of this book, was born in the state of Arkansas, January 8, 1858, and died in Texas, January 10, 1931. His father, a Baptist preacher, moved to Texas when Brother Carroll was six years old. There he was converted, baptized, and ordained to the Gospel ministry. Dr. Carroll not only became a leader among Texas Baptist, but an outstanding figure of Southern Baptists, and of the world.

"Years ago he came to our church and brought the messages found in this book. It was then I became greatly interested in Brother Carroll's studies. I, too, had made a special research in Church History, as to which is the oldest Church and most like the churches of the New Testament.

"Dr. J. W. Porter attended the lectures. He was so impressed he told Brother Carroll if he would write the messages he would publish them in a book. Dr. Carroll wrote the lectures and gave Dr. Porter the right to publish them along with the chart which illustrates the history so vividly.

"However, Dr. Carroll died before the book came off the press, but Dr. Porter placed them before the public and the whole edition was soon sold. Now, by the grace of God, we are able to present this 66th edition of 20,000. I want to ask all who read and study these pages to join me in prayer and work that an ever-increasing number shall go forth.

Landmarkism and Baptist Origins

I gave this pamphlet 3 stars because it is the classic expression of a movement within the Baptist denomination known as "Landmarkism." It is good to read if you understand its context. The Trail of Blood has been called "successionism" because Landmarkers believe that the Baptist church has existed in unbroken succession since Jesus was baptized at the Jordan River by John the Baptist. (It is also called the JJJ theory.) Landmarkist beliefs began circulating in the 1830s and stem primarily from the teaching of J.R. Graves who was a Baptist editor and preacher in Tennessee. Graves taught that Baptist churches are the only true churches; the true church is local and visible and that the Baptist church and the kingdom of God are one and the same. Landmarkism split Baptist churches and threatened the unity of the denomination after the Civil War. This pamphlet was written by J. M. Carroll, the brother of the prominent Texas Baptist and founder of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, B. H. Carroll. (Baptist historians still debate whether or not B. H. Carroll espoused Landmarkist views.) Most Baptist historians today contend that Baptists derived from English Separatism in the 17th Century. Some believe that Baptists were also influenced by Dutch Anabaptists. It is abundantly clear that Baptists were not connected to groups such as the Donatists or Waldensians mentioned in this pamphlet. For more on Baptist history see: H. I found some it a little hard to piece together. It is interesting but I wonder about the historical accuracy and how the theology of the different parties meshed. A stretch of the imagination.

Revelation, Revival, Remnant, and Readiness

Bestselling author, Sid Roth, known internationally for his television program it's Supernatural brings the writing of twelve highly recognized prophecy teachers in his book It's Sooner Than You Think: A Prophetic Guide to the End Times. The book is a clarion call to watch with vigilance and expectancy at a time when all seems to be getting darker. Roth reminds the reader that God's desire is to flood us with light so that we might be ready for a great end times revival.

Paul McGuire leads off with an end time,s preview that reads like fiction. He encourages Christians to take the Bible in one hand and the daily news in the other to find personal peace in the midst of these tumultuous times. L.A. Marzulli looks at the warning of the great deception, the signs of the times, and the similarity of the days of Noah stressing the importance of knowing we are ready.

Sid Stone sheds light on the first and second comings of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, on the feasts of Israel, and revelations into the teaching of the book of Revelation. Mark Biltz goes back to the very beginning to help the reader understand the Biblical calendar with a clear message to be alert and watching for the Lords return.

WOW I loved this book. This book is about different authors and prophecy that the Lord has given them for the future. I will read this book again and again. A lot of good information and what to look forward to in the future. God has His prophets and wants us to know what is ahead in the future for us so we can prepare and be ready when bad things happen and also when the good happens. You will LOVE this book and want to refer to it time and time again.

Each chapter is written by a different author with the exceptions of two each written by Sid Roth and Perry Stone. Very well layed out. I believe each author documented their writing well, especially for the brief lengh they wrote about their topic.I think that Tom Horn in Chapter 7,p. 121 should have either provided a footnote for or discussed in more detail his statement that the founding fathers wanted to name the Capitol Rome. My quick research turned up some interesting information on the name Rome. There were only two official towns, Georgetown and Alexandria in what is now the Capital. However there was a large farm. The owner was very fond of Italy. He named a river that ran through the property after one in Italy. He also named his farm Rome. So if the founding fathers wanted to call the Capital Rome, it was promted by the already existing name of the farm. However, the farm owner's name will be of interest ~ Francis Pope.

About the Author
Dyanne Gordon Green was born and raised in northern California and currently makes her home in Charlotte, NC with her husband, Robert. She is a devout believer in the Lord and if you have any questions about Jesus, just ask! She has four children and four grandchildren scattered from coast-to-coast. Dyanne has been weaving tales since before she knew how to write. At the age of four, Dyanne would dictate stories to her mom and then ask her to read them back to her word for word. She has published short fiction and non-fiction, produced ad copy for radio, taught creative writing sessions, co-developed a monthly event for writers to showcase their works, and served on the committee for a northern California writer's conference. I really wanted to like it

I really wanted to like this book. The premise was enticing -- older characters finding love. The author hints early on at something in their past decisions kept them single until their attraction to each other. I wanted to know what these decisions were. Alas, the constant hopping from present to past tense, even within a single sentence, threw me off so badly I could not continue. I just got too irritated. I like Christian fiction, but this book just hit the theme too hard and too often, taking away from story line. I did a search and discovered the publishing company is owned by the author. Self-publishers need to be aware that their books should be edited before launch. Even a critique partner or beta reader would have caught these issues.

I found this book very difficult to read for any length of time. I read it in portions, reading entire books between portions of this one. It is written in first person the perspective changing between characters. Present tense, past tense, and third person are switched frequently, often within a sentence. Common sense seems to be lacking in portions. Example: SMALL SPOILER. Our female protagonist goes to her car and discovers a flat tire. Good thing her neighbor owns a towing company and happens to keep several sizes of tires in his garage just in case someone comes to his home needing one. No mention of her having a spare in the trunk or how the rim from the old tire would get onto a new tire. It would have made so much more sense just to have him change her tire with her spare. END SPOILER. The book just sort of goes off into unnecessary, barely related details and then wanders back to the storyline. The Christian thread is strong. That's not a bad thing. I've been a Christian for 40 years and I love books that honor God. I was uncomfortable with this one. I'm not sure I can even tell you exactly what the issue is. For me, something felt off. Although I wasn't able to immerse myself in this story or connect with the characters it may very well be the opposite for you. There is a lot of good stuff in the book that others have pointed out. My own experience is that with the high ratings I had high hopes but in the end I was disappointed.

Stormy with a Chance of Love was a heartwarming Christian experience from beginning to end. Maggie and Frank’s struggles with their pasts, the death of a close friend, and even their own relationship were sincerely shown and handled with a mature eye for character. Christina, Maggie’s cheerful mall-addict sister, along with Joe, a down-on-his-luck- family man who works for Frank helped lend a small town sort of realism to the story. Maggie’s past abortion seemed a little rushed in its introduction, but fleshed out her character and explained her reluctance to marry and start a family. Would be ideal for Bible studies or those who are looking for a well-written Christian romance.
