A fun and a worthwhile read

Author Ken March was a combat fighter pilot and brings this unique perspective to preparing for your daily walk with Christ. The result is a very pragmatic and useful text with autobiographical stories that demonstrate practical application of the biblical principles that are the focus of the book.

A Fighter Pilot's Guide to Spiritual Warfare has been popular with those who I have shared it with. So much so that I need to order another copy for our library since the book gets passed around and not a single one has been returned. I particularly like that this book reaches some who might not otherwise be inclined to read a serious text about Christian living.

A poignant look into the heart of a woman.

This book is a powerful look at the depths of a woman's heart. Tammy shares her story and her heart with such honestly and openness that you can help but respond. Her story shares the truth about who we are as women in the heart of God and it is desperately needed in the church today. We are surrounded, inundated with false ideas of beauty and constantly struggling and evaluating how we measure up; we will never meet this illusive, ever changing standard of beauty. We were created for infinitely more and we were created for community! This book is an excellent tool in helping us uncover our hearts and learn to be FOR one another. It is an answer to my prayer for God to bring healing, wholeness and unity to His daughters.

Beautiful book!

This is a book you should buy for your daughters, sisters, mom and all your girl friends. It is written with such truth (the good and bad) that really opens your eyes as to how you live your life and how you treat other women. It celebrates God's gifts to us and will help open your hearts to live with grace and have a life filled with love. It will encourage you to encourage others and will bring out the best in you! Great writing by Tammy and I applaude her honesty, her faith, and her willingness to share her story with us.

About the Author
Kelly Wahlquist has a B.S. in biology with an emphasis on genetics from St. Mary’s University and a B.A. in nursing from the College of St. Catherine. She left her nursing career to work full-time with Jeff Cavins in 2005. For five years, Kelly was the director of community relations for The Great Adventure Catholic Bible Study, and she is the program manager for the Archbishop Harry J. Flynn Catechetical Institute, serving the Archdiocese of  St. Paul and Minneapolis. She helped to create and implement this institute, which educates and equips the laity in the Catholic faith. For the past three years she has traveled extensively to Catholic conferences, where she is often the keynote speaker. This is her first book.

Great for Groups!

Kelly Wahlquist has written a fantastic book which deserves to be read and shared by every woman. Insightful, inspirational, and filled with truth, "Created to Relate" is a book that is well designed to use either for individual introspection or a group study. Kelly's writing style is accessible and upbeat, but also challenging in a good way. I recommend this book for any woman who wants to tap into her Feminine Genius.

Stellar Choice for SMALL GROUP study!

Looking to bring together women to grow in fellowship and friendship - with each other and more importantly with Christ!! Than THIS is the book for you (and your small group).... I double dog dare you not to find a connection within these pages to your own life!! Kelly Wahlquist does a beautiful job in bringing the reader into the pages in a very personal way. From the very first paragraph I felt connected to the text - moving through my own thoughts and experiences to identify and strengthen my relationships.

Kelly is funny - which always makes people (especially when shared within a group setting) feel more comfortable. The book is so readable - and inspiring (another bonus for group sharing). At the end of each chapter, she includes scripture to delve into, a mediation great to close or even kick off each meeting, fantastic questions to spark deep meaningful conversation and contemplation and lastly two 'call to action' options!!

Created to Relate - is thorough, entertaining, and truly delivers what it promises!! A new appreciation and hopefully adoption of God's design for peace and joy in your own life!! Sure hope Kelly is working on her next book already - because I for one CAN NOT wait to read it!!

Great Catholic Womens' Book Club Title!

It's been a great book club book! We read it during the Advent season and it was just the right reading to enhance our friendships and our personal relationship with God. The activities suggested after each chapter are a nice touch- we wish we had more roses to give! Kelly's done a wonderful job of "relating" to us,, on the other side of the country, in the printed word-and made the world a little smaller and better for having read this book together.

About the Author
James E. Talmage was born in Hungerford, Berkshire, England, on 21 September 1862. In 1876 the family moved to Provo, Utah, where James attended Brigham Young Academy and was a student of Dr. Karl G. Maeser. He later attended Lehigh University (1882-83), Johns Hopkins University (1884), and Illinois Wesleyan University (1896). Talmage was professor of chemistry and geology at Brigham Young Academy from 1888 to 1893, and was president of the University of Utah from 1894 to 1897. He resigned as professor of geology at the latter institution in 1907 to pursue a private practice as a consulting mining geologist. His scientific work brought him national and international recognition. In February 1891 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society of London. In December 1894 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, an honor conferred on few Americans. Two days after his election to the Royal Society, he was made a Fellow of the Geological Society of London. In December 1897 he became a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. He was also a member of the Victoria Institute, or Philosophical Society of Great Britain; a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; and a corresponding member of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. Aside from institutional scientific study, Talmage was instrumental in promoting popular scientific study with his work at the Deseret Museum. Under his guidance, this museum grew rapidly and was regarded as one of the finest of its kind in the West. Talmage held many church and civic offices including city councilor, alderman, and justice of the peace. On 7 December 1911 he was ordained an apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and from then until his death gave great service to his church. Among Talmage’s more important writings, scientific and religious, are: First Book of Nature (1888), Domestic Science (1891), The Articles of Faith (1899), The Great Salt Lake, Present and Past (1900), The Story of "Mormonism" (1907), The Great Apostasy (1909), The House of the Lord (1912), Jesus the Christ (1915), The Vitality of "Mormonism" (1919), and Sunday Night Talks (1931), first given as radio speeches. In addition to these published works, he was the author of numerous scientific papers for journals, and was a prolific writer for church papers and magazines for a period of many years. Many of his scientific works were used as university textbooks.

Great Kindle Adaptation of a Timeless LDS Classic

I won't say much about the content of this book, you can read plenty about that elsewhere. Plus, if you are like me, you already know what you are getting in terms of the content of the book. What I want to review is how well this particular version is adapted to the Kindle.

I previously paid for a version that claimed to have a linked table of contents. It did have a linked table of contents, but it only showed the chapter number, not the title making it nearly useless. This free version does a much better job. The table of contents appears exactly as it does in the printed version, with the chapter number and title (linked to the actual chapter) as well as a brief summary of the contents of that chapter (just as you find in the printed copy). The one draw back is you can't navigate directly to the TOC using the Kindle controls (for some reason it is not linked) so in order to get to the TOC you have to navigate to the cover and page forward a few pages till you get to the TOC. A Minor inconvenience.

The inline references are also linked to the footnotes at the end of the chapter, and the footnotes at the end of the chapter are linked back to the inline references allowing you to quickly and easily flip back and forth between the chapter text and the referenced footnote.

All in all, for a free book, you couldn't ask for more. An essential addition to any LDS Kindle library.

Don't forget the endnotes!

I found this a deep read, which gave me a much greater appreciation and understanding about what is known about Jesus Christ. While there are moments when the Mormon view may be noticeably distinct, they are not particularly distracting. It is an enriching read - especially if you make it a point to read all the endnotes. It does make you wonder why folks sometimes are under the impression that Mormons are not Christians.

This book is about exactly what it says it is: Jesus Christ. True, the author is Mormon, however, the author is not trying to preach mormon doctrine...entirely... he is trying to make a statement on Jesus Christ's Divinity. If you want to learn more about Jesus Christ, read this book. It will definitely help you understand more about him. The author offers this book as a study, taking you through scripture to show more information about Jesus Christ.

Jung's theory of Synchronicity is one of the most fascinating yet illusive aspects of his work. It is essential to a full understanding of what he means by the collective unconscious. In this new work Dr. Montgomery succeeds in bringing annunciation into dialogue with synchronicity. Montgomery's New Approach to Spirituality

Dr. Montgomery’s study and application of Jung’s concept of synchronicity is clear, informative, thorough and exhaustive. However, anyone searching for meaning in spirituality, transcendence and mysticism will recognize this work’s personal relevance.

We live at a time when personal spiritual meaning is being diminished both by secularism denying all forms of spirituality and by religion’s emphasis on ritual, dogma or political and social action. Secularism and Religion have colluded ironically to destroy any spirituality that can speak to the soul to bring meaning and peace.

In this vacuum of spiritual starvation Montgomery offers several much needed detailed nourishments. 1) Synchronicities are neither a “coincidence” as secularists would affirm nor are they the non-specific denials of coincidence affirmed by the often confused “New Age” movement. Rather synchronicities are “a vehicle for the transmission of essential meaning.” 2) Montgomery’s treatment of annunciations will also feed the soul of anyone recognizing how secularism and religion have colluded to dim the light of ancient mysticisms. Montgomery offers hope for the existence of a transcendent objective spiritual world which communicates divine meaning to individual persons. Denied by the secularists and misunderstood by scriptural literalists and inerrancists, annunciations return searchers for spiritual meaning to the ancient spiritual knowledge of mysticism, revelation and the incarnation – “the Logos became flesh and dwelt among us.” 3) Even Plato seems right again in Montgomery’s brilliant book. Dismissed by most of contemporary philosophy, and forgotten by Christians who do not know of the relationship of Platonism to the development of Christianity, Montgomery offers us a Plato-like framework for understanding the connection of our world to a spiritually transcendent one.

This study is an exhaustive hope of the multiple ways the divine reveals itself. Dr. Montgomery shows us what to pay attention to and how to listen.

*The* Classic of Liturgical Studies

Most Liturgical scholars own a copy of Dix's `Shape of the Liturgy.' The reason is that Dix is perhaps the most thorough and erudite liturgical scholar of the 20th century. `Shape' is a classic that has fundamentally shaped most Protestant and Catholic denominations. To the person not familiar with `liturgy,' it means `work of the people,' and is the way in which Christians have traditionally worshipped. It is a common worship, in which the worship of various separate churches is similar, but varies by time of year, and with the local culture.
Dix starts with an introduction to the Liturgy; then he moves on to the performance of the Liturgy. Then he begins his historical quest, in which he attempts to find the roots of the liturgy in the Biblical documents, moving into the pre-Nicene time period. It was in the very early pre-Nicene times that the Eucharist came to consist of a four-action shape: offering, thanksgiving, fraction, and communion. He discusses the Eucharistic prayer, the local traditions, the meaning and theology of the Eucharist, consecration theology, sanctification of time, and the ceremonial. He then discusses the completion of the shape, and the use of variable prayers. Then he covers the medieval liturgy, the Reformation liturgies (with particular attention to Anglican issues), and a call for renewal.
Overall, Dix's work is monumental. Sometimes, it is a bit too monumental. The work is 764 pages long. Much of what he says could be condensed into probably 200 pages effectively. However, his attention to detail is marvelous: he has read every Church father writing 2-3 times! Dix is partly responsible for the rediscovery of Liturgy in most mainline Churches, from the Evangelical Lutheran Church to the United Methodist Church. His research into early liturgies has demonstrated the Jewish nature of many Christian liturgies. I highly recommend this book. However, a little patience is needed to get through the entire book.

An excellent overview of the liturgical development of the early church. I would recommend this book to all people like myself that are non-liturgical. Dix brings out that the general outline of the service of the Eucharist "is everywhere most remarkably the same after 300 years of independent existance in the widely scattered church" in the Mediterranean region. If the non-liturical fundamentalist arguement that pagan intrusion was the origin of the Eucharist service were true, we would expect to see widely divergent local customs surrounding the eucharist service. The only explanation to explain the remarkable similarity is a common origin that must date to the very beginning of the Christian movement, before its missionary expansion. This would mean that the original design of the Eucharist liturgical service was done with Apostolic oversight.

This is blockbuster news to a non-liturgical cleric like myself. After reading this book, I now have more of a respect for the desire of my liturgic brother to keep the shape of the liturgy as it has been handed down to him or her. And I now will be more open to incorporating parts of the liturgy into our non-liturgical service. This is a must read for those that are contemplating throwing out the customs and practices of the liturgical service as being boring and repetitious. Instead the ministry of the liturgical church needs to teach what Dom Gregory Dix writes to the laity of the church, so they understand the various parts of the service, what they mean and their Apostolic origins. If someone had done that for me when I was an adolescent growing up in a liturgical church, I might have stayed in the church, instead of moving on to be a pastor in a non-liturgical denomination.

A Classic on Liturgy returns

"Everything old is new again" seems to have impacted the Christian Church in the 21st Century. With the "rediscovery" of the richness and depth of the ancient forms of worship, the reprint of this classic on liturgy is very welcomed.
Dom Gregory Dix, an Anglican scholar, began a short presentation of the shape of liturgy that by his own admission became an expansive examination of how the Church has worshipped over the centuries. The research is outstanding and the general usefulness of the book is amazing considering the length to which the author has gone to verify his conclusions.
This outstanding work is a key for those theologians, pastors and priests seriously interested in the worship of the church through the ages. A serious layman can obtain much from the book as well.

Recommended for Preachers in Training

"Preach Better" is a good book to review and examine one's preaching style. This text will help you to reconsider your approach. I would recommend this book to those training to be preachers.

I was very eager to receive the book having pre-ordered it. However, if you want to find leads and specific resources to improve preaching, this book is limited and may not be what you need. Overall, this text is an exhortation for examining oneself and offering balance. All ten authors are very qualified and excellent writers, but they seemed restrained in offering insight and ways to grow. I kept thinking, "How do you do that?" When reading, I thought that the editor should have assigned subjects to these writers that were hardest for them to learn rather than their most natural talents. I have come to expect a very high level from Start2Finish. May God continue to bless that work.

NOT Just for Preachers...

PREACH BETTER is a tremendous book about preaching. I would say that it is NOT a book just for preachers. Those in the pews ought also to read it. Sometimes (quite often I suppose), we hear about preachers working only one day per week. To read this book is to gain a great insight into the difficulties and challenges for any conscientious preacher of God's word. To read it is to learn that we do work more than just on Sundays!

Each of the ten writers have done excellent work in concentrating on and covering their individual topics. I am sure a lot of thought went into matching up writers to topics. I've been preaching for a third of a century, but I had no difficulty finding many statements to highlight in the Kindle edition I was reading. I will seek to read them again and spend some of that great abundance of "down time" a preacher has pondering them.

The ten topics chosen are are surely ten of the most vital considerations of any preacher in his most vital work. The two chapters I found of greatest help, personally, were: Better Illustrations and Better Preparation. Each one, though, was extremely helpful.

I am confident this book will bless the lives of any and all who read it whether they be preachers or not. Perhaps these books edited by Chris McCurley will become annual events at Start2Finish. I hope it will be so.

Good insights for all who present God's word

Although geared to full time preachers, this is a good book for anyone aspiring to regularly present God's word. It also helps me to better appreciate those gifted and called to preach. It's a short read with many authors. So it's easy to stay engaged.
