About the Author
RYAN J. PEMBERTON left a career in marketing and public relations to write about life and faith and God. He has degrees in theology from Duke Divinity School and Oxford University, where he lived in C. S. Lewis's former home, served as President of the Oxford University C. S. Lewis Society, and co-founded the Oxford Open Forum, an interreligious dialogue group. He has written for Duke University Chapel, Bible Study Magazine, and Relevant magazine. He serves on the Board of Directors for Jesus' Economy, an international non-profit organization that creates jobs and churches in the developing world. Ryan currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and daughter. This is his first book.

My Reflections On "Called"

I first met Ryan during my junior year of college. We were both attending a campus ministry group called The INN and I was co-leading a small group Bible study called a CASA there (coincidentally, the co-leader I got paired with that year, Jon Peterson, later became my husband-but that's another story for another day). Ryan was one of the core members of our CASA group way back in 2003.
Before we began the "official" study in our CASA, Jon and I decided to go through a book with our group that we both shared an affinity for: C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity. If you've never read it, you should. Today. Like, right now go to Barnes & Noble and pick up a copy. Besides the Bible itself, no other book has ever spoken to me so clearly and deliberately about the Truth of God's person and work. It was the perfect springboard for a group of college students seeking God's will for their lives as we entered the brave new world of adulthood and independence.
Mere Christianity struck such a chord with Ryan that he began spending his free time studying Lewis's works and theology. After college graduation, Ryan married his high school sweetheart and was working a "safe" job in marketing. It was then-in the midst of his comfort and security-when God interrupted his story and called him to something totally new and unexpected: to study theology at C.S. Lewis's former teaching grounds, Oxford. Ryan was called to leave behind the very things he had worked his whole life to achieve and follow God in faith.
In his first book, Called: My Journey to C.S. Lewis's House and Back Again, Ryan explores what it looks like for the Christian to truly surrender and follow God's calling-wherever that may lead them. Even if that means trading a steady job for the life of a poor college student halfway around the world.
Called is the story of Ryan's journey to Oxford (where he actually got to live in C.S. Lewis' house!) but, more than that, it is also the story of what it means to truly follow God. It is the story of the peaks and valleys, the triumphs and the disappointments, the joys and the struggles that come with following God. It is the story of listening to God's calling on your life and following without abandon. No matter what the cost.
And as much Ryan wrote this book about his journey, it also took me on a journey of my own. In turns, the heartfelt stories made me laugh and cry. They transported me to the hallowed halls of Oxford and the unpretentious quarters of C.S. Lewis's home, The Kilns. More importantly, though, the stories also caused me to reflect on my own life. Where is God calling me, and what would it look like if I truly surrendered to that calling?
As I was reading Called I was convicted of what it looks like for me to personally surrender to God's call. You see, I suffer from this disorder called control. In this disorder, I have the misconception that I am entitled to control over my own life and that, in fact, I am currently in control. The side effects from this disorder include, but are not limited to: disappointment, fear, regret, anger, stress and frustration. Thankfully there is an anecdote available for people like me who want to control themselves, their world, their story. Called reminded me that the solution to my "problem" is one seemingly simple act: surrender. We must lay aside control over our own plans and surrender to the calling God has in our lives. Then, and only then, is when the most beautiful story of our lives can finally be written.
In the midst of this most difficult season that I find myself, I would like to surrender my story to God so that He might write the beauty into my pain. As a writer, I know that the author has a purpose in their writing-a goal they are hoping to achieve. So as I go through this journey called life-with the peaks and valleys, the triumphs and the disappointments, the joys and the struggles-I will trust in God's plan for my story. After all, I am the main character in this story, experiencing as I go, but only God knows the ending.
I am humbled that I got to witness part of Ryan's journey as he followed God's calling. I am equally grateful that he wrote it all down in his book for so many of us to benefit from. It is my hope that you, friend, will find the beauty that God has written into your story. And if you need a little inspiration, pick up a copy of Called-you won't be disappointed!

A touching picture of God's faithfulness

“Called,” a new memoir by Ryan J. Pemberton, is unlike any story I’ve read recently in its earnest portrayal of a young man broken but redeemed. Pemberton followed his dream, and what he believed to be his calling, to Oxford University to study theology and to be part of a place still bursting with the ideas of his hero C. S. Lewis. Along the way, Pemberton and his wife had the remarkable opportunity to live in the Kilns, Lewis’s former home.
On the surface, the theme of the book is not new. In fact, we’ve seen a surfeit of Christian bestsellers in the last several years detailing the lives of twentysomethings who equate divine calling with radical adventure. Inherent in most of these books is the message that we, too, are called to leave life as we know it and go.
Pemberton’s book seems to turn on the same motif. Here we have the author, a man in his twenties, who liquidates his retirement account, gives notice at his dream job, and sells his material things in order to move with his young wife to a foreign land to follow the path he believes God has called him to.
But readers must look more closely at “Called” because this is a story deeply rooted in doubt and full of ache. It’s one that builds slowly and shines light into the private and needy places of the human heart. In nearly every way, Pemberton’s memoir flips the divine adventure story on its head.
The book itself, covered with a stunning upward view of the spires of Oxford, begins not in those hallowed halls but in a dark and musty social services office in the United States where Pemberton and his wife wait for word on financial rescue. We realize quickly that this waiting room experience is taking place after their adventure has ended. But like all good writers, Pemberton can easily start at the end and then tell us what led up to it. He deftly weaves the exhilaration of being young and on a sure path with being disappointed and weighed down by the unpredictable nature of life itself. There are failures in this story—academic and professional and personal—but the space between them is where Pemberton begins to understand what it means when Jesus says, “Follow me.”
In moments of painful, raw honesty, Pemberton asks the questions that are on all our lips. What does it mean for a Christian to be called? What if what we thought was a calling was just a personal dream? Can I be obedient when the calling is a slow, daily urging? Pemberton’s courage in publicly confessing his doubts proves that he may be the genuine radical of the twentysomethings.
With timing that mimics the stutter-steps of life, Pemberton pulls us through his reality and lets us learn by his side. He holds out a rare invitation to slow down, recognize our humanity, and rely on God’s faithfulness. In the end, he is surprised and sure of the knowledge that our calling is to trust God’s persistent love, and that through the victories and failures, Jesus continues to ask us to follow.
“Called” is a book that will appeal to every believer because it takes that most knotty of issues—the Christian calling—and helps to unravel it a bit so that we can better understand our own moments of being called.

A Gem for Lovers of C. S. Lewis & Oxford

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to study in Oxford, England? Or maybe you have dreamed of being a writer. Or wondered what Christians mean when they talk about God "calling" them to do something. If you feel any of these statements might apply to you, then I think you will enjoy reading Ryan Pemberton's book, Called: My Journey to C. S. Lewis's House and Back Again.
Called is the story of Ryan and Jen, two twenty somethings who give up a secure life (with Ryan working for a marketing firm) to travel thousands of miles around the world and study theology at Oxford. At turns this book is reminiscent of Bruce Feiler's Looking for Class: Days and Nights at Oxford and Cambridge, Carolyn Weber's Surprised by Oxford, or even Sheldon Vanauken's A Severe Mercy. The reason I associate Pemberton's first outing as a writer with some of these classic books is because the man is a wordsmith who loves, as he says, "stringing words together like Cheerios on a fishing line". However, I can assure you that the end result tastes much better than Cheerios. Reading this book is more like a feast. I found myself frequently underlining choice phrases and fabulous paragraphs that not only helped me to see but to feel Ryan's story.
Pemberton has the gut-wrenching honesty and vulnerability to paint a portrait, or share with us a snapshot of his life, that reveals what one man's Christian life really looks like, "warts and all". Along the way, the reader is invited to learn, in the best and really only way possible, what it might look like to be "called by God". No book I have ever read, or sermon I have ever heard, does justice to this topic like the simple sharing of Ryan's story--not so much because his tale is extraordinary--but simply because it is told truly.
I must confess that I have been blessed to know personally many of the characters and places in this story. But that, too, is a test of this tale's integrity. Despite my familiarity with the subjects, not a note of this score rang untrue to me. Rather, it all came alive, like the invitation to jump into a Mary Poppins chalk picture on the sidewalk, Ryan, through this book, was bidding me to enter another world. And as I accepted that invitation, I found myself being led by the most congenial of tour guides.
If you have ever visited Oxford for yourself and found yourself enchanted by that fair city's "grey magic," you will relish the opportunity to feel the magic again through reading these pages. And even if you have never been to Oxford, or even read a book by C. S. Lewis, this book may just make you want to do both.
To paraphrase another great writer, Frederick Buechner, Ryan's story is important not because it is his, God knows, but because if he has told it anything like right (and I think he has) the chances are we will recognize that in many ways this story is also ours.
At least, I found this to be so.
