About the Author
Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was ordained as a priest in 1969, became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. He was elected pope by the College of Cardinals following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on March 13, 2013.
His life has been marked by a deep humility, concern for the poor, and a passion for engaging people from all walks of life in a conversation about the role of faith in our lives and in the world.
The Joy of the Gospel is his first Apostolic Exhortation.

Beautiul Wisdom

With so much hubub centered around the comments the Holy Father wrote about “trickle-down” economics in Evangelii Gaudium, the entire population, including Catholics, have ignored some excellent points from the exhortation. In Section II, Pope Francis explains that, “Every authentic experience of truth and goodness seeks by its very nature to grow within us, and any person who has experienced a profound liberation becomes more sensitive to the needs of others.” This is a beautiful truth that can be shared across the religious spectrum and is no doubt why this pope in particular is gaining so many admirers from the non-Catholic Christians brethren and even the non-religious.

He’s funny also. In the same section, he says, “...an evangelizer must never look like someone who has just come back from a funeral!” Later he acknowledges the proclivity of some pastors to ramble on in less-than-inspirational homilies: “We know that the faithful attach great importance to it, and that both they and their ordained ministers suffer because of homilies: the laity from having to listen to them and the clergy from having to preach them!”

There’s no escaping the controversial section on economics, however, and I cannot see it any other way than the Pope criticizing the free market. Of course, he’s right when he says that the free-market alone doesn’t lead to a holy society, but I don’t think anyone is claiming that. What the free market does exponentially better than the alternative statist, socialist, or centralized economies is distribute wealth in the most effective and efficient way possible and has brought more people out of poverty than any other institution on Earth, including the Church.

In Evangelii Gaudium, the Holy Father offers readers a wonderful exhortation from which anyone, Catholic or otherwise, can garner wisdom. Despite the glaring flaw in his economic terminology, this is an excellent read.

Five stars for 'Joy of the Gospel'

A clear, joyous statement of what our world can be if we truly follow the words of Christ. Popes have said many of these things before, but I think people are paying attention to Francis for two reasons: 1) He "practices what he preaches," e.g., visits the homeless, embraces a seriously disfigured man, and washes the feet of prisoners (not other Cardinals) on Holy Thursday. 2) He is a good communicator, who writes in accessible, understandable, and friendly language. And he writes for all Christians--not just Catholics. Actually, he writes for all people. I especially wish our policymakers and politicians would read this.

Dr. Houle has been happily married to his wife, Julene, for more than twenty-five years, and they have two grown children. The family makes their home in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

This book is an excellent collection of wise thoughts. Any person who could apply even 1% of these aphorisms would markedly improve their life. I for one will look forward to reminding myself of these aphorisms over and over. Highly recommended!

Beautifully written

This is such an amazing book! It tells of a young girl and her struggle with life! There are many people than can relate to this book and the best and wonderful part is that this book reminds us of how wonderful our Lord and savior Jesus Christ is, it reminds us that no matter what we have done, that there is a God, a good, merciful, and loving God that will take care of us, forgive us and welcome us with open arms! Thank you Jesus for allowing Sis Myrie to bless us with this novel!! It was truly a delight and a great read!! I'm so ready for the next book!!!

Awesome Read!!!!

OMG...this was one of the best reads ever!!! I'm not much of a reader, but this book truly kept me intrigued. This is definitely a great book for anyone working youth/young adult ministries. It portrays real life events, and ties them in with biblical based solutions. This author did an awesome job with this book and I am anxiously awaiting book #2....Getting Over Kyle! If you purchase this book, you will NOT regret it!!!

This book is awesome!!!! The story captivates the reader. Once you start reading, you don't want to put it down until you're finished. I was saddened upon completion of the book because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I can't wait until part 2 of this book is released. The author is very talented. Love this book! August 12, 2013 By Tammy Burch Format:Paperback I love this book! I wasn't sure what I was in for when I started, but once I started reading, I was hooked! The author takes you on a ride in the future right to the past. The time travel is seamless and very easy to follow. The characters bloom more and more with each page! I loved how easy it was to fully engage in the character's lives and feel for them. Can't wait to get my hands on book 2!

A fantasy of what romance should be, it's all good.

I don't read romances very often, but I do like historical fiction. I also like action/adventure and mystery. But this book was definitely a page-turner, I'm glad I purchased it.
The last fiction book that I read was "Gone Girl" which was a fun read but it was so dysfunctional that it made me feel depressed at the end. Another book that I read with a historical fiction and time travel element was "Outlander" which was also a fun read, but had a lot of stressful or negative elements in it.
So, it was good for me at this time in my life to pick up "Shenandoah Nights." The reason is that I have been under a lot of stress lately and sometimes it really helps to read something positive. Also, the protagonist is a Christian and it is really, really rare to have a Christian portrayed as the heroine in a story. That was really refreshing to read. If you read fiction frequently, you will often find Christians (or a group of aliens that represents conservative type people) portrayed in a very negative light. You won't find this attitude in this book.
If you are not a Christian, you will not find the Christian elements to be intrusive. The heroine prays, and values the good character of her men. She also blushes! That is about it, you will not hear any preaching in this book.
This book is very positive, very engrossing, and it ends well. The romance is emotionally intense and not graphic. It is perfect for teens and perfect for those of us who have enough darkness and distress in our daily lives (and on the evening news) that we are ready for a break. Enjoy!

Shenandoah Nights is a tightly written time travel tale

People read books for different reasons. If you are looking for a sweet time travel tale that gives you plenty of history, then this your book. If you are looking for a book about the transforming power of love, then this is your book too. If you want a family base of loving folks with strong values, then this is your book too. It is an entertaining read that not only reveals the people from the past, but also the intriguing past of the tall ships.

Now, I like books that are written, edited and formatted well. Shenandoah Nights meets this standard too.

A Time-traveling Romance

Here is a lighthearted romance with a lot of imagination and even some history worked into the contemporary story. Rebecca O'Neill is talked into being the teacher chaperone on a field trip for the class that will start sixth grade in just a week. This field trip is aboard the Shenandoah, a reconstruction of its name sake that was a schooner used in the American Revolutionary war. In the rebuilding of the ship, Captain Roberts makes sure they use every piece of the original ship that was salvageable. They painstakingly numbered each board as they removed it so when they built the new ship they could put the old boards in the exact location they were originally in. Which creates one cabin made completely of the original materials. This cabin becomes the transport to the past, in 1776.

I loved the movies The Love Letter and Somewhere In Time that involve time travel and falling in love with a person in the past. Then there is the conundrum, can the person from the present, or future depending how you look at it, go to the past and stay in order to be with their true love. This novel falls under that same category. Lisa does a great job of bringing out the chemistry between Rebecca and Captain Reed.

It is fun to imagine such things. The story takes you from present day, to over 200 years ago and back. As a sixth grade teacher, and still in her twenties, some of Rebecca's thoughts seem a little too "young" for me. I wasn't sure if this book was written for young adults or adult women. Lisa has assured me it is for women, although there have been quite a few teenage girls who have read it and contacted her or left a review. Even one sixty-year-old man who read it after his wife did and enjoyed it.

The book was very hard to put down once the romance was established. The last half of the book didn't seem near as geared to such a young audience as I first questioned. It is a fun read, and if you are looking for a short, light hearted romance novel, you will most likely enjoy it, as I did.

About the Author
Adam S. Miller is a professor of philosophy at Collin College in McKinney, Texas and the author of six books. He earned a BA in Comparative Literature from Brigham Young University and a MA and PhD in Philosophy from Villanova University. His first four books were written for academic audiences and they explore, from a variety of perspectives, new ways of thinking about "grace" as an ordinary, this-worldly phenomenon. His fifth book, "Letters to a Young Mormon," is the first to be written and published for a general audience. His newest book, "Grace Is Not God's Backup Plan" is also intended for a popular audience. Miller is co-editor a series of books for the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship at Brigham Young University entitled "Groundwork: Studies in Theory and Scripture" and serves as the director of the Mormon Theology Seminar. He was a co-owner and co-founder of Salt Press, a promising independent press recently acquired by the Maxwell Institute. Miller has been interviewed about his academic work on public radio and a variety of podcasts. He blogs at the "Times and Seasons," "The Church and Postmodern Culture," and "Speculative Non-Buddhism" websites. He participates regularly in regional, national, and international conferences that address religious themes. He has organized three professional conferences. He has published more than twenty articles, reviews, and essays in a variety of journals and venues and delivered more than forty conference presentations since earning his doctorate in 2005. He was named "Best Essayist" in 2011 by the Association for Mormon Letters.

I suddenly felt like Paul was speaking to me

Miller achieves the task he sets for himself admirably: to provide a paraphrase of Romans that is thoroughly readable, true to the spirit of the text, and pertinent to the modern context. While by no means a literal translation -- one of the passages most effective for me involve electron fields -- the direction and intent of the Pauline text comes clear in Miller's paraphrase.

Perhaps the most important goal of "Grace Is Not God's Backup Plan" is to perform an act of estrangement: to make something that was familiar brand new, and therefore as powerful again. In part, he does this by making Romans entirely accessible to a modern audience. I was completely taken aback by certain renditions -- for example, by rendering Romans 12 in everyday speech, I suddenly felt like Paul was speaking to me, personally, in a way that I hadn't felt for years. Thus, the value of a faithful but imaginative restatement like Miller's comes clear: what was old becomes new and once again has the power to affect us.

This. Is. GORGEOUS.

Adam Miller's project in this lovely little book is to provide a new translation of Romans, correcting for the tendency of most other English translations to focus on "the letter of the text" rather than "its logic." "Paul's forest," writes Miller, "is always getting sacrificed for the sake of its trees." The result is that Christians frequently misunderstand grace, thinking that God's grace is a response to our sin. We get it entirely backwards, argues Miller. Grace comes first. It is not a cosmic Band-Aid. Grace was the whole plan all along.

This paraphrase is simply spectacular. It is novel and fresh. It brings out the intimacy of Paul's letter and falls on modern ears just as I imagine Paul's original Greek fell on the ears of his contemporaries. I've read a number of books on Paul's Epistle to the Romans, but I've never understood this letter as well as I do after reading Miller's book.

I am now entirely convinced of the "urgency" with which this paraphrase is needed. Read this book. It is gorgeous.

A new light given to the book of Romans

Adam Miller shows a deep understanding of the Scriptures through this translation of Paul's letters to the Romans in his language, and in how he addresses the book as a whole. He brings a new level of clarity to the book of Romans through a personal translation that is not based word for word (or even idea for idea like some translations have done) but rather, by incorporating the whole aspect of Romans--the purpose and placement of grace within our lives--to bring the whole book of Romans to life.

Miller brings the book of Romans to life through his show of the importance of grace. Through his close reading he shares an important insight that Paul shares: Grace is not something that has come about due to our sins or the "fall", but that grace has always been working for us. A book of it's kind is long overdue for our generation. Dedicated believers in Jesus Christ, who happen to be professionals in the natural world have been waiting for such a book. Nehemiah people provides the reader with "Continuing Spiritual Education", training and encouragement. It serves many purposes, but perhaps the most profound is the writer's ability to challenge the way our spiritual lives seem to be disconnected from our professional lives in the marketplace. This book shows us that it is possible to marry both and expect results in the marketplace .
The believer is presented with a solid scriptural foundation for ruling and reigning in life with Christ in the marketplace without fear but with supernatural results. The challenges of the 21st Century have placed a demand on believers in Christ to be Proof Producers in the marketplace. Nehemiah people will help every serious professional and believer in Christ to walk in the truth, authority and the convictions of biblical faith in the marketplace successfully and thus produce the proof that Jesus Christ is who He says He is.

Nehemiah People is a phenomenal book!!!!

If you are a believer in Jesus Christ who has ever struggled with the question of whether or not you can be effective as an agent for Kingdom change while working in the marketplace -- you MUST read this book. Paul deals with the issue of how God uses people who are not in "full time ministry" while sharing significant Biblical insights from the life of Nehemiah.

I am a Nehemiah person. I love the Lord, and look for every opportunity to serve Him and advance His Kingdom. I just happen to be called to do it in the marketplace much more frequently than from a pulpit. If YOU are a Nehemiah Person - this book will open your eyes to several principles that will help you to better understand how and why God calls people to serve in the marketplace. More than that, it will encourage you by giving you a better understanding of the principles He can use in your life to equip you for better service.

A diamond in the rough - MUST READ for those serious about walking out their faith in the marketplace

Nehemiah People affirms the calling on my life, almost 40 years ago. It has been a lonely journey - knowing you are called to live your life of faith in the marketplace - seeking to use your vocation as the platform to reach the lost and serve our Lord Jesus Christ, wherever and in whatever capacity that may be.

There are few books that with honest, integrity, solid Scripture and written by one who has lived it out. Os Guiness' book The Call, Redpath's The Making of a Man of God for example - books that are not fads but bear the trial of time and are cornerstones for those who choose to live for Christ, where He has placed your feet. Your calling is not to be taken lightly. Nehemiah People is just such a book and will help fashion and affirm your walk with Christ in the marketplace.

I look forward to the years to come, as rereading it over the years will continue to bring new light to my calling. I highly recommend it to all to read - at least once!
