In that same night did the Blessed Francis appear unto me and say: “Sister, if thou had prayed unto me sooner thy prayer would have been sooner granted; that which thou hast asked hath been done.” Upon the next morn ing, therefore, I went into the church of Saint Francis and found there a friar preaching in Saint Feliciano, which friar was chaplain unto the bishop and did hold his authority; and to him I did determine to make my confession immediately that the sermon should be ended. Where fore I did confess myself most fully and was absolved of all my sins. And in this confession I did feel no love, but only bitterness, shame, and pain. The third step was that I did consequently persevere in the performance of the penance imposed upon me, and as yet I was filled with pain and misery without any other consolation."

25,550 Ball Bearings!

Before you can lead and coach others, says Steve Brown, you must learn how to lead yourself. So what would that look like? Steve enlightens us with eight memorable insights in this terrific book.

It’s packed with the practical—like “The Cycle of Grief” chart on page 51 and its antidote on page 53, “The Cycle of Grace.” It’s original—know anyone who hangs a poster copy of Rembrandt’s “The Prodigal” by their front door? And—it’s inspirational.

I made a ton of inspirational notes that I planned to share with you, but then I read Chapter 8, and found the big idea for me (and maybe you). Read this excerpt and you’ll be telling this story to family and friends all year!

EXCERPTED FROM CHAPTER 8: STEWARDSHIP AND SHALOM

“Teach me to number my days aright so that I may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

Steve Brown writes:

People sometimes do strange things. After my first residential session as a participant in the Arrow Leadership Program, my roommate went home and made a very strange purchase. He bought 25,550 ball bearings.

The natural question is, why? Why would anyone buy 25,550 ball bearings? Well, there is a method to what may seem like my roommate’s madness. The answer is profound. During that first Arrow residential session, my roommate had a transformational experience. He was deeply moved by the needs in the world. He was also awed by God’s particular call on his life to be part of his mission in this chapter of history. Finally, he was convicted that God wants everyone to carefully steward their limited time on this earth.

His prayer was the same as the psalmist’s in Psalm 90:12: “Teach me to number my days aright so that I may gain a heart of wisdom.”

So, when my roommate got back home, he took the psalmist’s prayer literally. He wanted to number his days aright. To do so, he did some basic math. He estimated his lifespan to be 70 years and multiplied 70 years x 365 days. This comes out to 25,550 days of life.

Although my roommate knew that this timeframe wasn’t guaranteed and that his days are ultimately held in God’s hands, he was still moved by this research. He wanted to brainstorm creative ways to tangibly and visually mark this precious and finite amount of time. So, he purchased 25,550 ball bearings. With each ball bearing representing a day of his life, he counted out all the days he had already lived.

Then he put the ball bearings representing days already lived into a large jar. The rest of the ball bearings were put in another jar that represented days not yet lived. Then he began a morning ritual.

Every morning he would go over to the jar of days not yet lived, pick out one ball bearing and place it in his pocket. This one ball bearing was a tangible reminder of his responsibility to steward each day that God gives him on this earth.

At the end of each day, he completed the ritual. He would take the ball bearing out of his pocket and place it in the jar representing completed days. It served as a visual reminder that each day given is a gift and resource to steward for God’s glory. Once a day is gone, it is gone forever.

My Arrow roommate eventually stopped this ritual, but he recently told me that the jars still sit on his shelf as a visual reminder.

This story has had a profound effect on my life. We ultimately don’t know how many days we have in this life. Today could be the last one. Maybe there are thousands left. Whatever the number, this story is a vivid reminder that we are called to be stewards of this special gift of time.

Brown continues, “The concept of stewardship is clear in Scripture. God has entrusted everyone and particularly Christian leaders with many resources—time, talent and treasure being just three. Our job is to recognize this trust as well as to seek to care for and invest these resources for God’s glory.

“As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 4:2, ‘Now, it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.’ In other words, leading yourself well means being a steward of the trust given to you. This trust is magnified for Christian leaders who are given opportunities to leverage not only their own talents but also the talents given to others.

“When I put the ball bearing illustration together with these stewardship verses, I am both convicted and inspired to wisely invest the gift of time entrusted to me. I am overwhelmed by the truth that God invites us to be part of his work and purposes. For these reasons, one of the key elements of leading ourselves is stewarding our time.”

Great encouragement for those suffering from past sins and condemnation

This is another success story I have finished and with respect want to thank author Emily Rose Massey for her transparency and dedicated desire to see others freed from the shackles of the past. She has broken through a hard place of her life by stating "The enemy has tried to keep me in shame of my story and silence my voice for too long and I believe now is the time for me to testify for my Lord Jesus.". This book will help those trying to navigate their painful past with strategies and the realization that they are not alone in their journey. Though Massey did not know it at the time and you may not presently, God had a watchful eye and was able to sovereignly turn bad situations around so that we can testify of His goodness.

A broken home, alcoholic father and inadequate perspective of God's love and judgement would set her up for a series of disappointments in relationships. As she ran from men to men in search of love, wrongful soul ties would envelope her. I am reminded in this book that God understands our heart like no other and that though we wrestle, He is able to provide a way out. Her early struggle is not uncommon to what I or others have declared along the way. She states "I said I was going to try to change myself in my own strength because I didn't know how to yield myself to Him yet.".

Learn how she would eventually grow in the Lord and she and her husband would be used in ministry. Today her exhortation to you is though your earthly father may have failed you, your heavenly Father will never leave you and forever love you. Out of the ashes of despair has emerged beauty as you discover how committing yourself to Jesus Christ can replace bondage into peace and turn disappointments into a life that will give Him glory.

In conversation-like style she will share her heart and life up to the present. I give this book a 5 star rating and recommend it for those needing encouragement.

Pick up this book!

Yielded in His Hands is an amazing story of Emily's journey to Christ. Her raw honesty is refreshing and many can relate to her struggle in some way. If you are looking for a encouraging testimony, this is it. I laughed, cried, and nodded my head in agreement while reading. Couldn't put it down and found comfort seeing I wasn't the only imperfect Christian trying to find my way. I recommended this book to believers and non believers interested in seeing first hand how Christ can work in anyone if you just let him.

This book was so beautiful because Emily layed her story out, unedited and transparent in order to allow it reach the deepest and furthest. I could not stop reading I longed to see the redemption of her character, "her", played out in a beautiful love story ending, between her savior and herself AND her prince charming and herself. I was not disappointed and we never are when we are "Yielded in His hands".

I consider this e-book very helpful to those desiring to learn how to activate a purposeful life style of prayer. As time is spent in prayer, author Taylor Chapman believes, God will begin to operate in one's life more clearly and more frequently. Though many consider prayer an extra thing to do occasionally, Chapman states that praying needs to be a priority as a Christian.

As you learn how to apply the Lord's prayer to your personal life there will also be sample prayers for the lost and backslidden as well as prayers for pastors and leaders. Taylor Chapman lays the foundation for understanding how prayer gives you access to heaven for blessings, favor, and a transformed nature. About the Author
Henri Nouwen wrote over 40 books on the spiritual life that have sold millions of copies and have been translated into dozens of languages. His vision was broad and inclusive, and his compassion embraced everyone. He died in 1996 but his work and spirit live on.

For all those who know and love the work of Henri Nouwen, here is another tidbit to remind us of what made him so endearing. Those new to Nouwen are in for a treat. This book chronicles his three day trip to the healing shrine at Lourdes, France, and it is brief, a mere fifty pages. Thoughtful, empathic and encouraging, Nouwen is always a good read, especially when you are feeling uncertain or downtrodden.

Perfect for a retreat of solitude

This book is a journal of a weekend retreat that Henri Nouwen spent in Lourdes, France. He went there to take a break and rediscover God's place in his heart and life. And God met him there in a rich and profound way. This is a perfect guide book for your journey of solitude in your quiet place, backyard or a park. God promises to meet us if we seek him and that was Henri's experience in this short journey. If you are not Roman Catholic or have questions about Mary's place, you'll need to just skip over a few paragraphs, but followers of Jesus worldwide should appreciate the encounter that our brother Henri describes here.

A suck it up attitude

From the Hub to the Heart is the conversion story of Andrew LaVallee written by him and co-author Leticia Velasquez. I do not know Andrew, he is a complete stranger except he and I have led similar early lives.
Andrew is from the Charlestown district of Boston, a working class neighborhood. His description of his early life was almost comical to me. I knew what he was going to say before I read it. I recognized his father and his father's friends. I said hello to his closest friend, I miss mine, and I knew to be aware of where the other neighbors were as I walked about his old haunts.
A suck it up attitude, a keep your mouth shut culture, a life of work and drinking after work - that was working class America as I knew it as a child of the early 1960's. Also familiar were the nuns teaching in Catholic school, of kid's fights settled with another kid fight sanctioned by adults and the dictum "Your one of us and only traitors leave."
Actor Jim Caviezel plays a key role in Andrew's conversion as he persuades him to visit Medugorje, but it is the Blessed Mother that took the reins once he arrived there.
The book reads like you are listening to Andrew give a talk and you can hear his Boston accent. The text is basic, clear and uncluttered. If you insist on highfaluting verbiage in your reading you should look elsewhere but if you enjoy a straight from the heart story told by the man who lived it, then come on in.
Reading this book will give you a glimpse of what makes America great while also seeing the challenges it faces. But that is not the purpose. The book exists to help others find their way back to God no matter how far afield they are. Everyone, man and woman, has a need for the Sacraments, Prayer and the support of other pilgrims as we journey through life. Andrew LaVallee has generously shown a bright light on his life so others can learn from his mistakes and find hope themselves if they feel lost. It is a short book. The few hours it will take you to read it may very well save your soul for all eternity.

truely a great story told from the heart

I picked this book from my kindle today and could not put it down until i finished it!

Much of the first half of the book details andy's life growing up in poverty in charlestown. It shows a rich life of family and friends but filled will much hard work and little pay. In sports friends and family he was gifted but nothing was gained without extreme hard work. Halfway thru the book the story turns a different chapter.
. He takes a trip to Majegorie and discovers the very real tangible existence of a spiritual world. The very same determination and drive that spurred him on to excel in golf baseball horseracing and his bread business was directed toward building a life dedicated to God.
Anddrew's ability to share his innermost fears and drawbacks is very commendable. I have learned a lot from this testimony and i am filled with much hope for our country and the world when others like myself become willing to center our lives on the power and majesty of God ! It seems with prayer and fasting
Miracles will become common place !

Inspirational!

I found Andy's book very inspiring! While it details one person's specific faith journey, there is so much content that anyone can relate to and learn from. The book is very easy to read are there are wonderful "life lessons" for each of us: not only the importance of God in our lives but family values, hard work, honesty and integrity. This book helped me to reexamine my own faith journey and is the perfect reading to help us reflect during this season of Lent.
