About the Author
Jane Roach was Director of Training for Bible Study Fellowship for more than twenty-five years. She currently teaches two Bible studies, is part of the steering committee for the Texas Hill Country Bible Conference, and assists with women's ministries at her church.

Life Transforming

Except for the Bible, this book has had the greatest impact on my life than any other. I completed this study as part of a small group Bible study before it was published. It presented me with truths that I had learned before, and it tied them all together in a way that brought clarity and helped me see Jesus in greater depth. His sacrifice became intense and personal; God's love became sweeter; and I was convicted and compelled to live in light of this. One thing I really like about this book is that each chapter includes a hymn which beautifully complements the lesson.

"Joy Beyond Agony" works great as a study for small groups, larger groups, or individuals. There will be eye-opening moments for seasoned believers, as well as for those new to Bible study. Using the Bible to answer the questions, meditating on or singing the hymns, discussing the lesson, and then reading the commentary afterwards, allows you to engage in God's word and discover for yourself truths that help to see how the Cross is central to every aspect of life. Completing this study helps enrich subsequent Bible studies, hymn singing, and participation in Communion. Easter will no longer be about bunnies and chicks! Personally, this book filled my mind and heart with Bible truths that re-shaped my life.

There are more than 20 ladies using this book as text for study. We meet each week and cover one lesson. The questions are thought provoking and many of us feel that we are thinking of the cross of Christ in a fresh way. This is an excellent study guide with commentary to provoke an even deeper understand of the chapter topics. I highly recommend this book, for individual as well as group study!

About the Author
Gary Zimak is a full-time Catholic evangelist and author. He is a frequent speaker at parishes and conferences across the country and is widely known for his talks on overcoming anxiety. Gary hosts a daily radio show on BlogTalkRadio and is a regular guest on Catholic Answers Live, EWTN’s The Son Rise Morning Show, and Catholic Connection with Teresa Tomeo. Discerning God's will

Seeking God's will is not something that's done once or twice in a lifetime, writes Gary Zimak in Faith Hope & Clarity. The author points out that we have an opportunity to turn to the Lord for help with major and minor decisions every day.

Zimak uses his own experience throughout the book, citing the steps he took to transition from a successful computer programmer to a full-time Catholic evangelist. He also writes about ways he and his wife reached decisions related to their children--first, a serious health issue with a newborn and later the choice to home school their daughters. His key to discovering God's will is a combination of common sense and willingness to hear and listen to what God is saying.

The book covers major elements of discernment including the role of the Church, prayer, and spiritual direction. Chapters close with a list of key points and reflection questions, making this a useful resource for faith-sharing groups as well as individuals. Sample key points:
* Trying to determine what God wants us to do is a process that takes time.
* If God wants us to know something, he will reveal it to us.
* The fact that difficulties arise in our plan doesn't mean it isn't God's will; he often allows us to struggle in order to increase our faith.
* To truly discover God's will, we must decide that what he wants is more important than what we want.
* Sometimes God's will involves doing things that we would rather avoid.
* It is never God's will that we disobey the commands of his church.

Zimak also sketches several general situations that occur during discernment and offers suggestions for dealing with them. If you feel that the Lord wants you to do something different, but don't know what that is, it may not be time to move. If you have an idea what God wants but the plan doesn't provide a way to support yourself and your family, Zimak recommends staying put for the time being.

This is a great book and I highly recommend it! I really enjoyed reading it. I love that it is easy to read and understand. Gary taught me how it is possible to have a true personal relationship with Jesus and the steps I need to take to ultimately discern His will for me. His step by step approach makes it easy for anyone to know how grow closer to God and to discern God's will for them in their life. Gary Zimak is a great author and this is one book that I will read again and again. Thank you Gary Zimak for writing this book! It is a true blessing. God Bless you!

Good but falls short of the "Clarity" promised.

Good but falls short of "Clarity" promised. Excellent writing style. Highly readable. However, when it comes to providing clarity on the most important factors used to confirm the most difficult discernments, Gary punts. He fails to address how and when "signs" can be sought or relied upon (Isaiah 7:11; Judges 6:39; Genesis 24:13, etc). About the Author
Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor. Murray considered missions to be "the chief end of the church." Andrew pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860. In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. After Martha Osborn married George Howe, they formed the South East Africa General Mission (SEAGM) in 1891. SAGM and SEAGM merged in 1894. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission's name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with SIM in 1998 and continues to this day. He died on January 18, 1917, four months before his eighty-ninth birthday. Over the years he has influenced many, including Jessie Penn-Lewis, a key figure in the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival.

Excellent Reasoning! Motivational!

The aim of good works is that God is glorified, not man, Andrew Murray tells us in the beginning of this book. Waiting on God is part of the work process. Offering oneself as an instrument through whom God can work is the chief objective of life, Murray writes. Work is the "highest form of existence" he adds, noting that we are defined by our work. We are what we do in a sense. In maintaining a Christian perspective, he places work in the context of love, noting that "The most Godlike thing is love."
Fruitfulness is an outcome of work. Fruit is produced spontaneously. It isn't forced. Murray presages Rick Warren in discussing how fulfilling one's God-given role with talent and ability leads to a sense of satisfaction. He goes so far as to say "The works of a man not only reveal his life, they develop and exercise, they strengthen and perfect it. Good works are of the very essence of the Divine life in us."
Murray sounds a theme found in Robert A. Schuller's work when he talks about Divine work requiring Divine intervention. Dr. Schuller similarly talks about a God sized dream, one that cannot occur unless God is involved. Faith is a necessary part of such a dream becoming a reality.
In the conclusion he returns to the opening comments about waiting on God. If one is to achieve what God designed him to acheive, it will have to be done God's way. That can only come about as one waits on God.

My day started out like any other day. I was in the kitchen preparing breakfast, before going to work; cream cheese spread over rye toast and coffee. The breakfast of champions! As usual, I was running late, and it certainly didn't help my cause any when I spilled cream cheese all over my new silk tie.
"This is how my day is going to start," I said to myself after letting out a long drawn sigh. I rushed quickly to the sink; lowering my tie into the basin, I tried desperately to wash it out before it stained.
Just as I was vigorously cleaning my tie, and cursing under my breath, it happened.....Jesus Christ walked into my kitchen.
"Hello, Michael," he said with the most beautiful and peaceful smile I have ever seen. "I am Jesus."
Out of total shock, I jumped up immediately and yelled. "Sir, I don't know who you are and how you got in here. But you need to get out of my house now!" I reached desperately for the frying pan and held it firm in my right hand. I held it out in front while making a real threatening swinging motion to let him know I meant business.
"You know exactly who I am," he said with such a smooth voice. He seemed sincere and very humble; he was almost childlike. "Because I just told you."
"Look," I said angrily while holding the frying pan out in front with both hands, grasping tightly around the handle as though it were a tennis racket. "I'm warning you; if you don't get out of here, I'm calling the cops!"
"Are you sure you want to that? Because I'm only here to help you," he said with an extremely relaxing tone of voice. He had a very serene look; like twin wells of purity, his eyes reflected gentleness and compassion.
"Help me," I snorted sarcastically. "Who says I need any help!"
"Michael, you are a man who has lost his ways and I am here to put you back on the right path," he said with a brutally honest stare.
"Look, just drop the act, I know that you are not Jesus and if you leave now, I promise you that I won't call the cops," but even as I said that, I let my guard down just a bit; truth was, this man was very non-threatening. He was the opposite of aggressive.
"How do you know for certain that I am not who I say I am?" He asked.
"Well, for starters, you are way too short to be Jesus; second of all, Jesus had long hair and lastly, Jesus died over two thousand years ago;  so you see, there's no way that you can be him." I responded in a calm and matter-of-fact manner.
"I am not too short! I am exactly as my Father has made me." Jesus said in a very passionate tone.
I had finally had enough; so I decided to take a different approach, turning towards him I said, "Okay, if you really are who you say you are, then prove it."
"I have no need to prove myself to you," he said abruptly.
"Yeah, but do you have any idea how many people in the world claim to be you? Not eight blocks from here there is a mental hospital full of crazies claiming to be Jesus! What makes you any different from them?"
"I am different from them because I am the one True Son of God."
"Ok, then let me ask you this, what's the winning numbers to this weekend's Powerball?" I asked him with a smirk on my face.
"I am the Son of Man; not your personal genie," he responded with an amicable grin. He also had an amazing level of patience and calmness in his voice.
"Well, I remember that in Sunday school, they taught us about all the wonderful miracles you performed back in those days. But isn't that how people knew that you were the Son of God; didn't you have to walk on water and raise the dead in order for them to believe?"
"Those with pure hearts do not need to be swayed. A man with a clean conscious and a clear line of sight will surely see the truth; especially when it's right in front of his very eyes."
"Okay," I said finally caving in. I put the frying pan into the sink and said, "Let's say, just for argument's sake, that you are Jesus. Then what are you doing here; why are you in my kitchen?"
"That's easy," he said with a friendly and inviting smile. "I am here to have breakfast with you."
My house sits all alone, at an abandoned cul-de-sac, in a forgotten part of the world. But on this day, I sat in my kitchen and had breakfast with Jesus.

Fantastic. This isn't a terribly long book, but it conveys everything that is necessary. The author paints a really clear picture of Jesus through his conversation with Michael, the main character. Though it is presented kind of like a story, Jesus's conversation with Michael is packed full of wisdom. It will certainly help you think about life in a different way, and this book is truly uplifting.

Drop this great little book in your purse or suitcase, tuck it in the glove box of your car, or take it with you on a date with your sweetheart. Some of the questions are profound, but most are just plain fun, lead to good discussion, and give you an opportunity to get to know one another even better. I recently read that one of the best ways to ramp up your love life is to share secrets. Grace's questions bring out things I probably wouldn't have thought to ask...they've revealed more about each other and we've connected more intimately. GREAT BOOK! Love it. Thanks, Grace!

15 years and going strong!

After being together for 15 years and married 10, you would think we know all there is to know about one another, but One Minute Romance for Couples by Grace Fox took us to a deep level of understanding, communication and love. Sure I know his favourite food and favourite colour, but do I know things like "What legacy do you want to leave behind as couple?" or "Recall our wedding day. What was the highlight for you?". This simple questions began a conversation, laughter and a feeling of love the drew us closer on a new level.

This little book is profound in its simplicity. What a great idea! If you and your spouse (or someone you know) needs a little help to kick-start a deeper intimacy, this is the perfect book to do it. And they're not expensive either, so you can buy more than one copy. I encourage you to do so!

Chris Clevenger has ministered for churches in Alabama and Tennessee and currently speaks at churches and events throughout the U.S. He is a freelance broadcaster, content creator, and the host of the Biblical Manliness podcast, which focuses on defining masculinity in a biblical way. Chris and his wife, Melissa Jane, currently live aboard The Lovable Little Bus, traveling and adventuring while living a life of biblical simplicity. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and studying, coffee, and trail running.

A breath of fresh air

The culture’s view of manhood seems to fall into two categories, on one side you have the effeminate, weak man and on the other you have the brutish, overbearing, ignoramus of a man. Many men today are, therefore, left wondering “who does God want me to be?”Sons of Dust answer this question in wonderful detail.

Sons of Dust is a study of manhood from the pages of Scripture. The author, Chris Clevenger, beautifully breaks down Genesis chapter 2 covering various aspects of manhood, what it is and what it is not. Throughout this 123 page book Chris covers the man’s sense of adventure, our role in marriage, a world without men, and what it means to be created in the image of God.

I really enjoyed my time with this book. I enjoyed his personal illustrations and thought he handled the text very well. Sons of Dust is filled with Scripture and does a wonderful job breaking down the text of Genesis 2 and showing what it means to be a man. The only issue I had with this book was that there were a few typographical errors, however, though present, they did not detract from my reading experience. This book would make a great resource or Bible class for a men’s class at your local congregation. In a culture that increasingly blurs the line between manhood and womanhood, Sons of Dust was a breath of fresh air.

I received this book to review from BookCrash bloggers program. Not being a man, I asked my husband to review the book and give me his insight and thoughts. So, while I did read his highlighted portions of this book and I am writing this review, most of the thoughts of this book are his, with a few comments from me.

My husband is not necessarily a “reader” – at least not as much as I am. However, this is a book that he truly enjoyed. I know this because of the highlighted sections throughout the book.

This book, Sons of Dust; The Roots of Biblical Manliness by Chris Clevenger, is based on the second chapter of Genesis – the account of the Garden of Eden. The author, walks with the reader through the concepts found there to develop and enrich their masculine spirit and cultivate what God instilled in Adam. Thereby developing his character and potential to live as Sons of Dust. This book would be a great study for church men’s group – for men young and old.

A call to men to be real men

Masculinity has been given a hard way to go. From being maligned to misunderstood, it is often looked down on. Men may not even know what it means to be a man in the Biblical sense. Chris Clevenger seeks to fix that in Sons of Dust, a walk through of God's creation of man.

If you rely on society and movies to show you masculinity, you will end up with a false picture. Men are not men because they don't cry, fight all the time, and hide their feelings. Men are created to take care of things, from work to family. To be a man means that you fulfill God's purpose for you.

Clevenger begins with showing who our Creator is, and what makes man so special among creation. He also tells about why women are important to complete men. Through out the book, he breaks down stereotypes of what being a man is, and replaces them with truth. For example, men don't have to hide feelings or a creative side; God created them to be expressed. Clevenger issues a call for men to return to who they are created to be, workers, protectors, lovers.

There is a lot of information in Sons of Dust, and it is good for men of different ages. It would make a nice complement to a Bible study group to use. Dads could use it with their boys as they grow up.
