From the Author
Years ago, while in the midst of bleak circumstances, I stared out the window and noticed the parched landscape due to a long-lasting drought. In my spirit I sensed God telling me, "Twila, the rain is coming. The rain is coming, and it's for you. Revel in the rain. Splash in the puddles. Delight in the deluge." God gives me that message often. It's one He wants to soak deep within my soul.

Rain has become symbolic to me of God's goodness and greatness. He speaks to me through the rain and reassures me of His love. I'm reminded of His power, presence, and purpose in my life.

My prayer is that you would let the words in this devotional wash over you; allow them to saturate your mind and your heart. Meditate on the Scriptures at the top of each page. As you turn your thoughts to the truth of who God is and how great His love is for you, receive encouragement, hope, and comfort. And may you be able to trust that He is big enough for all you need.

I love what Hosea 6:3 says:

Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge Him. As surely as the sun rises, He will appear; He will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.

TWILA BELK, aka “The Gotta Tell Somebody Gal,” is a writer and speaker who loves braggin’ on God. In addition to Raindrops from Heaven, she has written or co-written five books and contributed to several others. Her most recent titles (co-authored with bestselling author Cecil Murphey) include I Believe in Healing: Real Stories from the Bible, History, and Today, and I Believe in Heaven: Real Stories from the Bible, History and Today.

Fresh, new, hope-filled devotional!

A fresh, encouraging, hope-filled entry for each day! Twila knows how to weave words, share solid Scripture truths, and offer thought-provoking questions that challenge and delight. I love this little book. The shape, size, ribbon place-marker, and style of entry makes this one of my favorite devotionals.

Sometimes you CAN judge a book by it's cover. "Raindrops..." is a lovely on the inside as it is on the outside!

"...like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings grass from the earth..." these words from 2 Samuel go a long way to describe how I feel about Raindrops from Heaven. This little book of gentle reminders of God's power presence & purpose is a breath of fresh air in the morning, a pause that refreshes during the day, a word of comfort at night.
The passages are are short, a perfect jump start to a busy day. The brevity is also just right for those who are going through tough times, with responsibilities that don't leave time for longer reflection or concentration on an entire chapter of a book.
Twila Belk as "The Gottatell Somebody Gal" does just that in her new book. Her passion to share her friendship with God shines on every page.
As she shares her heart, Twila speaks to my own heart, some days in laughter, some days in tears but every day with a touch of God's spirit to refresh, encourage or comfort me.

Beautiful and fullfilling words of promise and encouragement!

My sister gave me this book after I lost my son. As I have struggled to live through each day, God's words are spot on and give me the encouragement, hope, comfort, and guidance that I need as I try to begin to heal my shattered heart. Its like it was written just for me! I look forward to reading it everyday along with my Bible. Highly recommended to everyone! The words will remind you that God is right beside you, no matter what trials or tribulations you are going through. He will never forsake us! I ordered this for one of my dear sister's in Christ who is going through some difficult times. I know it will inspire and encourage her just as it has me. GOD IS GOOD!

About the Author
Sir Robert Anderson (1841-1918) was converted to Christ at the age of nineteen and almost immediately began to preach in his native Dublin where he trained for a legal profession at Trinity College. He became a respected member of the Irish Home Office and an expert on criminal investigation. In 1888, he was summoned to Scotland Yard, London, to serve as Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department, an office he filled with distinction until retirement in 1896. At his retirement, he was knighted by Queen Victoria; and in 1901, King Edward VII made him Knight Commander. In the midst of all his many duties, he managed to gain a profound knowledge of the Bible, preach in various conferences, and write seventeen books.

This seems audacious and gall. I regard answering these requests for me to take time to take up the Lord's time to answer these questions of my opinion as asking a favor of me. And then to specifiy a slew of your requirements of what rules I must follow to do so is audacity and gall.

I don't have the time to keep doing this; my time is too short to be "laying up treasure in Heaven" to waste it on advertising for some company, even one otherwise as great as Amazon.

Easy to read and easy to apply.

This is a great weekly devotional for law enforcement and really any other career. It's easy to read and even more easy to apply. I really like the practical applications with the "notes" sections, it allows for a little bit of reflection and accountability to follow up at the end of the week/chapter. It will definitely be a suggestion to the other officers in my prayer group.

Gracious good news and subversive questions for churches and struggling leaders

Over the last seven years (since 2010) our church I have pastored has grown, plateaued and declined, if the one important metric is Sunday attendance. Missional literature helpfully urges us to adopt more of an incarnational posture. Community development literature urges us to serve our neighborhood. Congregational transformation literature shows us how lighthouse churches have reversed their decline. We have learned from all these, have trained and sent out leaders and started a community ministry, but overall Sunday attendance has declined. Our church situation of decline is not unusual in the Western world. It is why I immediately ordered this book when I saw it published.

Jeffrey Jones is Associate Professor of ministerial leadership at Andover Newton Theological School. He has served as a Baptist pastor and denominational staff member and written on congregational leadership. He does not avoid questions of growth and sustainability. But refreshingly and practically, Jones seeks to change the score card for how we measure “success” or what he better terms “faithfulness”, and counsels how to find hope in tough times.

Firstly, Jones identifies churches tend to avoid bad news. Well-resourced churches are less likely to want to adapt for post-Christendom, postmodernity, new technologies and the rise of secularism that mean churches operate in a whole new world. At least churches in decline may be more ready to rely on God and radically rethink their approach to church.

The most interesting chapter for me was “Why Ezra and Nehemiah were wrong and what that means for us”, offering biblical insights on the distinctions and tensions between priestly and prophetic leadership. In similarly tumultuous times, churches today are often like Nehemiah and Ezra, intent on rebuilding new walls and reestablishing old institutions as if that is what we need! Second Isaiah in Exile more appropriately called God’s people to follow God’s new thing. We need priestly functions, and congregational revitalization, but we also need prophetic leadership to stand in contrast and urge us to move beyond maintenance and survival-seeking and to pursue God’s mission in the world. Moreover, Jones explores the leadership literature that urges institutions to choose deep change over otherwise slow death, and letting existing structures die for new life to appear:

“This is a time in which we need to face the difficult, often painful reality that new life comes only when we die to the old life. Too many renewal efforts seek to avoid this practical and theological reality, and because they do so, they are unable to address the true nature of our situation and offer a solid hope for the future. We need to be more concerned about resurrection than renewal.” (p.34)

Part 2 of the book subverts old assumptions with five new questions:

1. Rather than “How do we bring them in?”, ask “How do we send them out?”
2. Rather than “What should the pastor do?”, ask “What is our congregation’s shared ministry?”
3. Rather than “What’s our vision and how do we implement it?”, ask “What’s God up to and how do we get on board?”
4. Rather than “How do we survive?” (or “How do we structure?”), ask “How do we serve?”
5. Rather than “What are we doing to save people?”, ask “What are we doing to make the reign of God more present in this time and place?”

This is not rocket science, but recalls the essential function of churches as mission stations and disciple-making communities. Such questions remind churches to slow down to dream and listen, to face tough questions about identity and mission, to get in sync with the Kingdom of God and be prepared for fresh directions as crucibles of hope.

This will likely challenge values of existing church members and create conflict, but in Part 3 Jones dangerously urges letting go of organizational efficiency and pithy mission statements, preoccupation with attendance and budgets. Instead he challenges leaders to courageously pursue the new things God wants to do in mission, and to foster the personal spirituality, patience and fortitude to embody this adventure with their churches.

Facing Decline, Finding Hope does not cause me to give up on hoping and working for our church to grow in numbers. Rather it reminds me to primarily persevere in reshaping a new kind of church that sends people to use their gifts to foster the reign of God in the midst of dislocation and confusion – not to rebuild the walls but to refind our prophetic voice and subversive calling. In this sense it is a gracious and hope-filled book that is a gift of wisdom to church leaders and an asset for our churches. I will be encouraging my colleagues and leadership teams to read and discuss it, and to plan for a future those new questions suggest.

This is an excellent book for pastors and congregations facing decline and dramatic cultural changes. Without offering lots of prescriptions, it, more importantly offers a structure to discuss the changing cultural landscape churches see. It would be a wonderful text to use in a study with church leadership, especially in small and medium-sized congregations.

Won over by the purity of life, nobility of character, and pre-eminent gifts of the Maccabees as high priests, civil rulers, and military commanders, the Chasids, or early Pharisees, had some decades earlier attached themselves to this new high-priesthood, though with many a misgiving on account of the break in the high-priestly succession. The approval thus won from the reluctant Chasids, the Maccabees had deepened and strengthened by their achievements every year in every province of their activity, till the thought was begotten in many a breast, that at last the hope of Israel had come, and, in defiance of all ancient prophecy, was sprung from the house and lineage of Levi. There are good grounds for regarding Psalm ex. as the outcome of such an expectation, and as greeting one of the Maccabees as the long-expected deliverer of Israel. But, however this may be, there is no doubt that our author addresses two or more Messianic hymns to John Hyrcanus, in whom had culminated all the glories and gifts of this great family. The writer already sees the Messianic kingdom established, under the sway of which the Gentiles will in due course be saved, Beliar overthrown, sin disappear from the earth, and the righteous dead rise to share in the blessedness of the living. Alas for the vanity of man's judgment and man's prescience. Our book had hardly been published, when Hyrcanus, owing to an outrage done him by the Pharisees, broke with their party, and, joining the Sadducees, died a year or two later. His successors proved themselves the basest of men. Their infamy is painted in lurid colours by contemporary writers of the first century B.C., and by a strange irony the work, or, rather, fragments of the work of one of these assailants of the later Maccabees, has achieved immortality by finding a covert in the chief manifesto that was issued on behalf of one of the earlier members of that dynasty. This second writer singles out three of the Maccabean priest kings for attack, the first of whom he charges with every abomination; the people itself, he declares, is apostate, and chastisement will follow speedily—the temple will be laid waste, the nation carried afresh into captivity, whence, on their repentance, God will restore them again to their own land, where they shall enjoy the blessedness of God's presence and be ruled by a Messiah sprung from Judah. When we contrast the expectations of the original writer and the actual events that followed, it would seem that the chief value of his work would consist in the light that it throws on this obscure and temporary revolution in the Messianic expectations of Judaism towards the close of the second century. But this is not so. The main, the over­whelming value of the book lies not in this province, but in its ethical teaching, which has achieved a real immortality by influencing the thought and diction of the writers of the New Testament, and even those of our Lord. This ethical teaching, which is indefinitely higher and purer than that of the Old Testament, is yet its true spiritual child, and helps to bridge the chasm that divides the ethics of the Old and New Testaments. After the first century of our era the fortunes of the Testaments speedily declined in Christendom."
