This collection of essays from Mormon Women is about how they were able to do and live through very hard things and still maintain their faith and belief in God. Each essay is unique as the women share their stories of suicide, chronic illness, mental illness, financial loss, divorce, death of a child, infertility, children with special needs and loneliness. I particularly love the last two chapters and the summary of women in history who have fought great battles with God. We all have our stories that are hard, some of our hard stories are on-going. But the hope and light that comes as we turn to God, we will live! Healing and peace come, we find strength we didn't know that we had. We link arms with all the past and present, marching to the future with faith and courage!

Do you ever wonder if God is really there?

This is one of those books that I felt I needed to read. You see Ganel-Lyn is married to my cousin. Despite the fact that in life our paths have crossed less than a dozen times I've always been drawn to her. She is genuine, kind and easy to talk to. So this book was added to my infinite to-read list and I obtained a copy of the book but never found the time to actually read it. I then found out that my neighbor wrote one of the essays in this book which was further motivation to read it but time was still lacking.
A few weeks back on a Sunday afternoon I finally picked up this book and began to read. I made it through the first four stories and set the book down in awe of the trials others go through and their strength to overcome and deal with their challenges. Of those first four stories one was about Ganel's struggle after her sister committed suicide and a second was about the financial difficulties my neighbor had gone through. Both these women are amazing and honestly most of the world (myself included) would have no clue the depths of the trials and struggles they have had. They truly have been able to do hard things in their lives by relying on their God.
For the next several weeks as time allowed I picked up and read another story or two until I made it through all 17 chapters. From health issues to financial trouble, to living with mental illness and loneliness to death, infertility and wayward children the women in this book show us how they turned to God, remained faithful and came out triumphant.
If you ever wonder if God is really there in the details of your life or if He really knows what you are going through or if you have ever felt the burden you are carrying is just too heavy to bear I suggest you read this book. It filled me up and brought me peace, comfort and hope that I too can do hard things with God.

AMAZING! WONDERFUL! PHENOMENAL! Can't say enough GREATNESS about this book!

I knew this book would be good just by the title. However, I was not prepared for HOW AMAZING this book is! I went to bed early one night not feeling well and I took this book with me. As I started reading, MY burdens were lightened. Reading these heartbreaking stories of problems with health, finances, family, mental illness, and loneliness I found that with my tears for them I was healing. I am SO GRATEFUL these women felt brave enough to share their stories. For if they can do what they are doing...well, then, I can do what I am being asked to do. I couldn't put the book down and stayed up very late reading about these women whom I wanted so badly to hug. They ARE doing hard things! But as they testify--they are able to do those hard things--with God. May we each turn to the Father who holds out His arms waiting for us to run to Him...for it is from Him that we gain our strength.

About the Author
David and Mercedes Rizzo have been married more than 20 years, and are the parents of four children. Their daughter Danielle has autism and is non-verbal. During her sacramental preparation, the lack of religious education resources available to children with severe disabilities inspired David and Mercedes, with the help of their son Brendan, to create the Adaptive Eucharist Preparation Kit. They have contributed to the Adaptive Reconciliation Kit and the Adaptive Confirmation Kit. Together they have provided material for various blogs including Catechist Journey, DRE Connect and Catholic Mom.

David is a physical therapist who has worked extensively with children and adults with disabilities. He is the author of Faith, Family and Children with Special Needs. He has presented at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress, The Mid-Atlantic Religious Congress, The National Catholic Partnership For Disabilities and the NCCL Annual Conference. Additionally, David has contributed to the Finding God series (Loyola Press). Mercedes is a certified teacher who has provided support to children with individualized education plans. She has worked in both public and parochial schools.

About the Author
Gabriel C. Statom was educated in music and worship at the University of Mississippi, Princeton University, Florida State University, Westminster Choir College, Northern Seminary, and The Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. Dr. Statom is Director of Music at Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis, TN where he leads a vibrant multi-faceted music ministry of choirs, orchestra, and staff. He is artistic director of the Memphis Masterworks Chorale, and directs the Laudis Domini Vocal Ensemble, an auditioned choir that presents a cappella sacred music for worship and concert. He has conducted in the United States, Europe, and Argentina, including performances at Oregon Bach Festival, Spoleto Festival USA, and Carnegie Hall. He is married to Ginger McCollum Statom, and has four daughters: Margaret, Jennie, Sarah, and Ellen.

I came away throroughly unimpressed by Statom's arguments in Practice for Heaven. I can tell he is passionate about worship music, and is uncomfortable with modern trends, and I can respect that. But, there are typos throughout the book that make it very clunky to read, and Statom chases a lot of rabbits, making this book longer than it should have been. However, all of these pale in comparison to the travesty of a chapter that examines instruments in worship. It is literally one of the worst chapters of a book I have had to read during my masters degree. I suppose the rest of the book is worth reading to get some info on the subject, but skip that chapter. Seriously, skip it.

Three books in one

Hannah Smith was quoted in some of Catherine Marshall's books, so I was interested to read the books in this collection. The Unselfishness of God includes biographical information of Hannah's Quaker upbringing. The God of All Comfort is a masterpiece of describing all the reasons we can fully rely on our Heavenly Father. Reading The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life is still on my "to do" list.

Hannah Whitall Smith does a wonderful job of describing the deeper walk of the Christian faith. Her writings inspire and challenge me.

How sure you were of victory, then!" - You may agree or disagree with that statement but Smith leaves no doubt where she stands on matters of faith. This one provokes discussion and might make a great small group study. I also found Praying for the Prodigal encouraging, but for different reasons.
