Young Preacher, by Chris Hill

Four years ago, after much pushing and persuading from the young people that I refer to as my spiritual sons and daughters, the 40 young leaders (all under the age of 40) I mentor from around the globe, finally forced me to join the world of social media.

I was nervous and somewhat apprehensive at first, but with time, I gained a level of ease and began to compose my ideas in concise statements. I designed my statements to communicate leadership tools and life techniques mostly to the young leaders I was mentoring – most of them being Christian preachers, but some of them being business and political leaders from around the globe.

I called it "Dear #youngpreacher" and began to share the thoughts I wished someone had told me when I first started preaching as a boy, and later needed when I was leading groups as a young man. I incorporated the wisdom I gleaned from the many master preachers and accomplished leaders I have worked with or interviewed over the years. I also mixed in the insights garnered from the current crop of young preachers I know; many of whom are emerging as the top thought leaders of the millennial pulpit. I bound these thoughts into "tweets," and from my mobile device sent them around the world.

Like wildfire, the tweets began to spread; answering, in a small way, the massive need for mentoring of both young preachers and young leaders.

As we analyzed the early data, to our surprise, we observed that millions of people were viewing this material, and they weren’t all preachers. Other young leaders were benefiting by listening in on our "shop-talk" and the hashtag was gaining headway on its own. Hundreds of people began to both write me and tell me to, please elaborate more on these tweets. To release myself from the handcuffs of 140 characters and really drill down on these concepts in detail and example, they urged me to see my tweets as modern-day proverbs for their generation and to actually give these tweets and their generation the attention they deserved.

From these many requests was born this 30-Day Devotional. Stylized as modern-day proverbs and presented in categories to maximize their application, these tweets are designed to bless the life of the reader and to enhance their daily devotions.

I have laced these proverbs with strong Biblical references and my personal stories to enhance their relevance, and I am confident that this book will be a real blessing to your life.

I believe in you!

Priceless Wisdom
By Joshua K.
If you are called to ministry, you have been called to read this book. Simple as that.

This book is the perfect book for anyone in ministry, not just for young preachers, but for ANYONE young person in ministry.

So often I would think, "How did Chris Hill get in to my head?!?" He relates so well to the thoughts and feelings of ministers that we might always say out loud.

In all seriousness, if you are called to ministry, you would be doing yourself and your ministry a favor by investing in yourself. This is the perfect to do that.

This is an incredible view of ministry from the perspective of a man of God that has traveled the globe as an evangelist and now pastoring to thousands as well. I feel that the wisdom being passed on here is absolutely integral to you in your growth as a leader. No nonsense advice as if you were sharing a meal or having coffee with Dr Hill. I suggest you get a copy and then give out copies as gifts to your peers and friends that want to see their work for the Lord multiply and become more effective.

What Laurel Sees: a love story (A Redeeming Romance Mystery), by Susan Rohrer

Are Laurel's visions madness or could they be inspired by God?

Laurel Fischer knows the trials of having a prophetic gift all too well. Her husband, Frank, had believed her when she saw they'd have their daughter, Grace. He staked everything on it when she foretold his election to city council. But when a vision revealed that Frank was in the arms of another woman? Frank's politics took a turn. He divorced Laurel. He used her visions to prove her an unfit mother. He'd wed his wealthy mistress, Shana--a woman with everything but the child she'd always wanted.

When a disturbing new vision precedes the councilman's slaying, Laurel seems a likely suspect. The harder Laurel fights to get Grace back, the more that spells motive to hard boiled Detective McTier. It's all the more ammo for Frank's widow, Shana, to fight Laurel for custody.

Reluctant rag sheet reporter, Joe Hardisty, is pegged to cover the story, focusing on Laurel's visionary gift. A legit journalist at heart, Joe balks at the sensational angle. Since his brother was once abused by a priest, the last person Joe is inclined to trust is another supposed emissary of God. Fresh off a failed relationship with his editor, Debra Bernet, the only female he'll cozy up to is his cat.

As skeptical about romantic relationships as he is about matters of faith, Joe's walls are high, but the enigmatic Laurel has a way of unearthing Joe's most closely guarded secrets. Could Laurel's visions be genuinely inspired by God? A forbidden romance blossoms as this psychological thriller unfolds, while detectives close in on a killer.

Which mother will prevail in the custody battle for Grace?
Can Joe return to the faith he knew as a child?
Will Laurel survive to find love again?

REDEEMING ROMANCE is an anthology series of inspirational love stories based on Susan Rohrer's screenplays. In What Laurel Sees: a love story, this Christian Fiction series takes a suspenseful turn, blending the non-graphic sensitivity of a cozy mystery with the real world character drama of a psychological thriller. Biblical fiction lovers will find intrigue in the developing relationship between this modern day prodigal son and a woman with a purported prophetic gift, especially when her visions and dreams hit far too close to home.

From the Inside Flap
This inspirational novel explores mature subject matter in a frank yet discreet manner. It is a wholly fictional book that deals with a tragic reality: the aftermath of child abuse by a fallen priest. Although the referenced abuse is a peripheral element occurring long prior to the onset of this story, collateral damage reverberates decades later, into the characters' present-day adult lives. While this book's content is neither graphic nor profane, and there is no intent to disparage any actual person, group, or entity, some readers may be sensitive to certain fictional depictions. This book was written with great respect to the genuinely devout, with profound compassion for those who have suffered and survived abuse, and with personal empathy for every prodigal in need of redemption and grace.

Page Turner!
By Amazon Customer
I love all of Susan Rohrer's books, but this one is definitely my favorite. This is an excellent mystery with plenty of suspense and some romance too. You will love Laurel and feel for her as she gets some really bad breaks. Her faith in God never fails though. I couldn't imagine going through the things she had to face. And then the suspense got to a point where I just couldn't sleep. I had to find out what happens. I don't want to say too much and ruin anything, but you won't be disappointed. Very surprising twists near the end. Loved it!

A Summer Read by Rohrer that Rocks!!!
By book monitor
**"**/What Laurel Sees/** is a page-turning read that I highly recommend be added to your library ...for two reasons ... you not only won't want to put it down, but will likely also want to commend it to be read by those you love. Susan Rohrer masterfully interweaves the Spiritual with the secular to produce a tale that has it all .... effectively using a backdrop of lust, infidelity, decadence and murder, she encourages her readers to consider how even such severe trials and tribulations as those she depicts can be ... and often are ... used by a forgiving, loving and merciful God to produce patience, perseverance, character, hope and ultimately love in the lives of ordinary people. Though a daunting task for any author to achieve with credibility, Rohrer pulls it off with remarkable skill to give us a story that is both highly entertaining and intellectually challenging. So, for my part, on this you can count ... ***/What Laurel Sees/* is one book I will most certainly be urging my friends to read this summer ... not simply because I am certain they will enjoy it as much as I did ... but, more importantly, because I want to encourage some of those friends who do not already do so to be inspired by Rohrer to engage in thought ... ask questions ... and ultimately seek to know more about the God who loves them even more than I."

She does a brilliant job of developing realistic characters who are all living with past hurts and experiences that draws the reader in immediately . Throughout the story, these characters meet and impact each person's world view in such a way that they must confront their past. It is a great read - and kept me reading till the end. Torrey's Theology of Spirit Baptism
By Seeking Disciple
Many today wonder if R.A. Torrey were alive would he identify himself with the charismatic movement or would he avoid the termonology? I believe he would probably not be a charismatic and would probably even be an anti-charismatic from some of his views on the early Pentecostals. However, this book will make you wonder yourself.

In this work, Torrey gives his biblical understanding of the second work of grace with the baptism with the Holy Ghost. Torrey believes that every Christian receives the Spirit at salvation (Romans 8:9) but not every Christian is baptized with the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49). He believes the "Promise of the Father" (Acts 1:4) is for every Christian who will tarry and pray for the Baptism (Luke 11:13).

Ironically, Torrey's book is now widely read by Pentecostals because of his second work teaching. Torrey's understanding came from his revivalist views along with D.L. Moody and other late 19th century revivalist. It set the stage for the early charismatic movement although Torrey distinced himself from the early Pentecostals as did A.B. Simpson.

Overall I would highly recommend you reading this book even if you differ with Torrey's baptism language (filled vs. baptized) or his second work of grace view. The book does offer a challenge to us to be used mightily by God (Acts 1:8) and to trust in the power of the Holy Spirit and not the strength or wisdom of men (1 Cor. 2:1-5).

Clear and simple, yet so powerful
By Alice F.
Torrey's "The Baptism with the Holy Spirit" is straight-forward, easy to read (and it doesn't take long to read it either), clear and exciting. Taken from Scripture, the book offers life-changing truths that no christian can do without. If you desire to experience the abundant life promised by Jesus; if you're hungry for God and willing to give everything to Him and receive everything He desires to give you, or if you want to understand and/or receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, I highly recommend this book.

Powerful
By Amazon Customer
I'll start with my only complaint and that is on the Kindle version of this book. The Kindle version is full of typos some of which make a word completely unrecognizable, therefore I would recommend the paperback edition. I cut the Kindle version some slack because it was only $1.

The book itself is fantastic! I couldn't put it down until I finished it 2 hours later. It's a short read that is full of scripture to back up the teaching. Anyone who reads this book, who is also a believer in Christ, will have no doubt about baptism of the Holy Spirit. No questions asked. I'm sure there are many people who have received the baptism while reading this book!!! How exciting is that?!

Who Is Jesus? (9Marks), by Greg Gilbert

A famed historian once noted that, regardless of what you think of him personally, Jesus Christ stands as the central figure in the history of Western civilization. A man violently rejected by some and passionately worshipped by others, Jesus remains as polarizing as ever. But most people still know very little about who he really was, why he was really here, or what he really claimed.

Intended as a succinct introduction to Jesus’s life, words, and enduring significance, Who Is Jesus? offers non-Christians and new Christians alike a compelling portrait of Jesus Christ. Ultimately, this book encourages readers to carefully consider the history-shaping life and extraordinary teachings of the greatest man who ever lived.

Review

“Jesus asked his disciples, ‘Who do you say I am?’ It’s a question each of us must answer. In a wonderfully readable and succinct manner, Greg Gilbert mines the pages of Scripture to consider the truth of Christ’s claims about himself. This is essential reading for the Christian and the seeker.”
—Jim Daly, President, Focus on the Family

“Greg’s greatest asset is his ability to make profound things simple. As his book What Is the Gospel? helps us distinguish the true gospel from the false, so Who Is Jesus? helps us distinguish Christ as he presents himself from how we have remade him.”
—J. D. Greear, Lead Pastor, The Summit Church, Durham, North Carolina; author, Jesus, Continued . . . Why the Spirit Inside You Is Better than Jesus Beside You

“There is no more important question in the cosmos than 'Who is Jesus?' Greg Gilbert, with brilliant mind and pastoral heart, unpacks that question step by step with both insight and accessibility. Whether you’re a skeptic looking into these things for the first time or a long-time believer, this book will drive you right to where we all need to go: to the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”
—Russell D. Moore, President, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission; author, Tempted and Tried

“Clearly Christian, but more than polite and respectful to the skeptic, this book helps you consider Jesus carefully. Gilbert throws fresh light upon familiar scenes, joining facts with their significance. It is artful, yet plain and full of beautiful biblical theology. Here is an invitation to you the reader to come to know Jesus yourself.”
—Mark Dever, Senior Pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington DC; President, 9Marks

“This book does two things at once. It credibly places Jesus in the context of his own times, and shows why he cannot responsibly be left there. It is for those who have never thought about Jesus as well as those who think they know him all too well.”
—Timothy George, Founding Dean, Beeson Divinity School; General Editor, Reformation Commentary on Scripture

“The two most important questions for anyone to answer concern Jesus the Christ. Who exactly is he? And how do I relate properly to him? Gilbert addresses these questions effectively in this important book. From the moment at Caesarea Philippi when Jesus asked his disciples about the opinions concerning his identity until now, no other question has had such eternal consequences. This perceptive volume is written with the touch of the Spirit of God in revealing Jesus the Christ.”
—Paige Patterson, President, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

“This little book will be a great tool for introducing people, including the athletes I coach, to the most amazing person who ever lived!”
—Coach Ron Brown, Youngstown State University

“I am always looking for a short and clear book on the life of Jesus that I can put into the hands of someone wanting to truly know who he is and what he did. I now have it in Who Is Jesus? Greg Gilbert is right: ‘The story of Jesus is not the story of a good man. It is the story of a claimant to the throne.’ Consider the evidence presented in this work and see where it takes you.”

Excellent Primer on Who Jesus Is and Why It Matters
By Michael C. Boling
Who is Jesus? Seems like such an easy question. He is the Son of God, he came and died on the cross and rose again, and will one day return for His bride. But who is Jesus? Do we really grasp this Messiah, this history altering figure? Are we able to share with the world who Jesus is and why he is far more than just a moral teacher who lived a long time ago? Pastor and author Greg Gilbert in his excellent book aptly titled Who is Jesus explores this simple yet truly profound question.

There are some books that while small in length, nevertheless pack a giant punch. Gilbert’s book very much fits into this category. While at first glance and upon the first read the message relayed in this book may seem to be focused on those searching for an answer in relation to this Jesus character so many talk about, I firmly believe this is also a book that even the most seasoned believer needs to read. After all, knowing Jesus is at the crux of what we call the Christian life.

Gilbert rightly begins by noting there is “one massive treasure trove of information about Jesus – detailed, personal, eyewitness, blow-by-blow accounts of what he said, what he did, and who he was.” Of course where we find that information is the Bible. For those who might feel like closing this book at the mere mention of the word “Bible”, Gilbert encourages them to stick it out and to continue reading. If nothing else, the accounts of Jesus’ life shared by the biblical authors were written as literal and actual history and thus should be considered along those lines. Gilbert encourages the reader to simply take a look at the claims made in Scripture and to examine them to see if they are true. If they are true, then the reader necessarily has to make an important decision as to what to do with Jesus and to answer that all important question of who is Jesus.

Throughout this book, Gilbert makes the claim that Jesus was no ordinary man, that he is the King of Kings, the great “I AM”, was fully human, the last Adam, the Lamb of God who died for our sins, and the resurrected and reigning Lord. These are certainly some bold claims in the mind of some who have not yet fully dealt with that underlying question of who is Jesus. Gilbert recognizes that fact and with a great deal of patience and speaking from the heart of a pastor, he walks the reader through each important claim made in this book, proving along the way that Jesus is who he claimed to be.

For instance, Jesus claimed to be the great “I AM”. While such a claim may not seem that big of a deal to our modern ears, making the statement that one was the great “I AM” was in the eyes of the Jewish people stating you are God. When God spoke to Moses way back in the book of Exodus, He told Moses to tell the people of Israel that “I AM” had sent Moses to deliver the people from bondage. So to say you are equal with God was shall we say a rather bold statement. Gilbert aptly comments, “if Jesus just wanted to say that he pre-existed Abraham somehow, he would have said, “Before Abraham was, I was.” But by using the present tense – “I AM” – Jesus was clearly taking for himself, again, the unique and exclusive name of God.” Thus, as God and being the Son of God, in order to know God and to have relationship with our Creator, we must know Jesus and affirm that Jesus is who he said he was – God.

Gilbert also does an excellent job of working through the humanity of Jesus, something theologians call the hypostatic union – Jesus as fully God and fully man. This is a rather deep theological concept and Gilbert expertly relates he truth of this issue to the reader devoid of technical terms, instead choosing to engage why this matters. Why did Jesus need to become God incarnate? Simply yet profoundly, Gilbert states “Jesus became human because we needed him to do so. We needed someone to represent us before God and be our substitute. That’s ultimately why Jesus came- to be a loving Warrior King who would save his beloved people.”

I highly recommend this book for those searching for the answer to who is Jesus and also for those who are long in the faith who want to refresh themselves on the answer to that question. Jesus made some bold claims that must be dealt with and Gilbert does a great job of doing that very thing. Those who are searching will be challenged and those who have longed affirmed Jesus as Lord will find this book a wonderful reminder of who Jesus is and why they are so in love with him.

I received this book for free from Crossway Books for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 : “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”

Great Book!
By Dustin Carpenter
I am always looking for books that I can easily disciple someone with that is not overwhelming in size but packs a punch. Greg Gilbert’s first book What is the Gospel? fit that criteria through and through and most of the time, as soon as I get a copy in my hands, I tend to give it away!

Gilbert’s new book Who is Jesus? is just as great! In fact, both books side by side make a perfect one-two punch when you are training a new believer or sharing the gospel with someone who is interested in Christianity.

In fact, I tweeted Gilbert today and he said that the best way to disciple someone with these books is to read Who is Jesus and then What is the Gospel to help lead them to know Jesus and the gospel.

Gilbert’s book, with a great forward by Trip Lee, is broken down into eight compact but great chapters, looking at Jesus from different angles to help the reader to see that there is something that is “more than meets the eye” about Jesus. From looking at Jesus as King of Kings to the Great I AM, to the Second Adam and to the Lamb of God, Gilbert takes readers through some of Jesus’s most audacious titles to nonbelievers and lets the apologetics of the christian faith do the work.

The best chapter is chapter 5 “…One of us.” This chapter focuses on The incarnation of Christ, but most importantly, how Jesus is still interceding, reigning and ruling currently as Human, 100% God and 100% Man. Jesus didn’t lose his Humanity after the resurrection, but in fact is still Human. The excerpt below is one of my favorites from the book:

“Jesus is human now, and he will never be anything other than human—forever. A few years ago, I was having breakfast with a friend, and that truth came crashing into my consciousness during a spirited conversation about (hang with me here) alien life-forms. My friend and I had been arguing for a while about whether other intelligent life could exist in the universe, whether the Bible had anything to say about it, what it would mean if they did, etc., etc., when this question came up: if aliens exist, and if they are sinners like we are, could God save them and how would he do it? My immediate answer was, “Of course he could! Jesus would just incarnate as a Martian, die for their sins, too, and that would be that! Then he could make a decision about the Klingons.” The answer made sense at the time, but do you see why it was wrong? My friend shook his head and said, ‘No, Greg. Jesus is human. Always and forever. He’ll never be anything else but human.’ I had never thought about it like that.”

If that doesn’t convince you, I don’t know what will! I highly recommend this book and can’t wait to share it with more people!

Can be used for evangelism or revival.
By Erik Raymond
I am a big fan of the books in the 9Marks series. Each is so very helpful and accessible. I was happy to recently pick up the new release from Greg Gilbert entitled Who is Jesus? It attempts to interact with one who is investigating the biblical claims of who Jesus is. However, I believe the potential impact of a book like this is much broader. The way Gilbert answers this question ensures that this book will be helpful for those familiar with Christianity but not committed to it, those who are new Christians, those who are mature Christians, and evangelists or teachers who can use sharpening/refreshment on this topic.

Let me give you a few ways in which this book broadly serves the church.

It is clear. Gilbert writes in a very accessible manner. It is a joy to read and fairly easy to understand.

It is theological. The clarity is not because he sacrifices content. He doesn’t. There are helpful definitions of theological terms such as the Trinity. What’s more, he passes my personal test on all books that purport to be evangelistic: Does the author make justification by faith alone clear? Yes.

It tells the story. In a book about Jesus the book is not limited to the New Testament. Thankfully, the book shows how Jesus is at the center of the Bible’s story from Genesis on. By demonstrating how Jesus is what and who the Old Testament was looking toward, it helps to put the Bible together.

It is interactive. The author talks to the reader like he is sitting in a coffee shop with him. There is plenty of back and forth. In addition to drawing you in as the reader it is ideal for evangelistic or discipleship meetings. Good questions help move the ball downfield.

It is clear about authority. I’m not sure if it was intentional, but aside from a couple of references by way of illustration I don’t think I saw a quote of anyone (not that footnotes are bad). Here is a book that just points to the biblical authority and clarity concerning Christ.

It is a testimonial. By this I mean it gives God the mic to talk about Jesus. The Bible has plenty to say about Christ, here we have Scriptural teaching about who Jesus said he is and why he came.

It honors Christ. This is my favorite. Jesus is the hero of this book. It puts him on display. His name is in lights. He is seen to be infinitely glorious in his incarnation and powerful in his sin-atoning, serpent-crushing, wrath-satisfying death!

The book is short (133 or so pages) but good. If you are looking for a book to read with someone that you want to be more impressed with Christ–this is a good one to pick up. As I said earlier, it needn’t be used exclusively for evangelism, it’ll do for revival as well.

A refreshing, honest look at an overlooked segment of the church
By Kyle A. Dillon
I happen to be in a very small minority. I’m in my thirties, I’m an ordained minister in the PCA, and I’m still single. As I get older, I’ve come to see more and more the blessings of singleness. I have learned to appreciate the freedom and simplicity of being able set my own schedule, spend my own money, and pursue my own interests without needing anyone else’s permission. I never have to worry about the inevitable daily conflicts that arise when two sinful humans join their lives together permanently in marriage.

On the other hand, there are times when going home in the evening to nothing but Netflix and a personal-size DiGiorno pizza gets pretty old. I have wonderful friends and family, but as more and more of my friends get married, I sometimes feel left standing in the rain. I find myself asking questions like, Is something wrong with me? Am I being too selfish? Will I be alone forever?

And yet I also find comfort in knowing that I’m not the only one in this boat. I know that there are many other believers out there wrestling with these same questions. That’s why I was so encouraged to read Kate Hurley’s book Cupid Is a Procrastinator: Making Sense of the Unexpected Single Life. Kate, herself a thirtysomething single Christian and a blogger at The Sexy Celibate, devotes about 250 pages to reflecting on the joys and sorrows of the unmarried life.

It’s not a work of academic theology. There is no in-depth exegesis of biblical texts or discussion of systematic categories. But there is plenty of wise, honest, and vulnerable soul-searching—peppered with several personal anecdotes—all written in a manner that makes Kate winsome and relatable. Further, Kate does not offer any formulas for escaping singleness (“Do X, Y, and Z, and you’ll find the spouse of your dreams”). Rather, her goal is to give realistic hope, deconstruct some of the illusions about marriage and singleness, and point to God’s love and care toward us in the midst of life's difficulties.

In terms of giving realistic hope, Kate admits frankly, “Being single sucks” (43). This statement is situated in the aptly titled “Rant Chapter,” where she acknowledges the appropriateness of lamenting our loneliness. This is not a sign of ingratitude toward God; rather, “thankfulness and grieving don’t have to be mutually exclusive” (56). While singleness can sometimes be a source of delight, it can just as often feel more like bondage than freedom. There is a certain sense of loss that accompanies prolonged singleness, which Kate describes as a form of disenfranchised grief. As we get older, the cultural expectation (especially in the church) is that people should get married and start families of their own. But for some reason or another—whether by choice or by circumstance—many of us do not live up to that expectation.

Unfortunately, many well-meaning married folks in the church simply don’t know how to offer the right kind of encouragement or advice to singles. Instead they give trite formulas like, “If you just learn to let go, then God will provide you a spouse” (48). But what does it even mean to “let go?” Does that mean “stop desiring?” Are we Christian or are we Buddhist?! Or some will say, “When you least expect to find your spouse, he [or she] will come right around the corner” (117). But this is a false hope; many Christians find their spouse when they are looking, and others spend their whole lives looking but not finding. Further, this sort of advice implies that singles are somehow to blame for their own plight. It’s the kind of mechanical, simplistic theology offered by Job’s friends—miserable comforters indeed!

Others will say to singles, “Marriage is so hard, you don’t realize how good you have it!” To be fair, there is some truth to this that is worth acknowledging. There are some ways in which singles do have it better than married people. Whether one chooses the married life or the single life, there is inevitably going to be some kind of trade-off: intimacy along with conflict, or freedom along with loneliness (a somewhat over-simplified picture, but you get the idea). Further, each life has its own seasons of ups and downs.

For those down seasons in the single life, Kate provides some very important reminders. She reminds us that as many times as we fall, God will be there to pick us up: “God has rescued me before. He will rescue me again” (40). This is an oft-repeated theme in the Psalms, and it comforts us when loneliness (or struggles of any kind) is at its sharpest. God has been faithful in the past, and he will continue to be faithful. I have known seasons when singleness was so difficult that it pushed me into depression; but I have also experienced great joy in singleness. Emotions come and go, but God’s promises remain firm.

Now contrary to what many of the televangelists would tell us, God does not promise us all health and wealth. I can’t predict the future, and although I hope for a family someday, it is entirely possible that I will spend the rest of my life unmarried. There are no guarantees here, a fact which Kate acknowledges. Even so, she resolutely declares, “I refuse to let my belief in the goodness of God rest on whether or not I have a family” (233). The presence or absence of a spouse in one's life does not change who one is in Christ, and it certainly does not change who God is. He is and always will be the good King, and whatever our lot in life, we can still be faithful servants for his kingdom.

So for those of us who are still waiting, what can we do in the meantime? Kate offers several useful suggestions: for one, we should learn to set realistic expectations for our spouse-to-be. This means prioritizing character over external appearances (speaking as a guy, I have to admit that this is easier said than done, but I'm working on it). Further, we should learn to set responsible boundaries in dating, rather than give up on dating altogether (she has plenty of criticisms of the I-kissed-dating-goodbye philosophy). We should also fight the constant temptation toward self-absorption by devoting ourselves to a particular cause or ministry about which we feel passionate. We singles often have lots of extra time on our hands, so we should use it for God's glory. In addition, we need to be intentional about living in community; being single doesn't mean that we have to go it alone.

I would recommend this book not only for struggling singles, but also for married Christians who want to know how better to minister to adult singles in the church. This is so often a neglected demographic in our congregations, and we need to move beyond pat answers and superficial advice. Cupid Is a Procrastinator is definitely a step in the right direction.

The Best Book On Singleness EVER
By Happy
Can I tell you why I love this book so much?

It’s because FINALLY, someone said it: “Being single sucks.”

That so needed to be said.

Kate tackles all of it: dating, loneliness, church, life, freedom, longing, friendships, expectations, grief, hope - everything! – with wonderful candor, wisdom, and honesty.

And the best part of it is: she wrote her book to married people, too.

I’ve read a lot of books about singleness – but I’ve yet to read one as comprehensive, compassionate, and hopeful as Cupid Is A Procrastinator. There isn’t a single formula or platitude in it. It’s just…well, real. Kate gives us permission to own it that sometimes, being single just sucks. That it’s okay to grieve the loss of something we don’t have. But at the same time she reminds us that there’s “hope that is still hope”, even if it doesn’t end with wedding bells. That Jesus truly is enough. And that ‘family’ doesn’t need to be as narrowly defined as we think it is.

I hope you’ll pick up a copy – for yourself, or for a friend!

Words fail in describing the excellence of this book.
By Molly S. Paulson
This book is truly spectacular. It is an amazing combination of hilarious and profound. For older singles, it is incredibly validating and deeply encouraging (often bringing me to tears). For younger singles, it offers great wisdom on navigating singleness well. And for married people and church leaders, it provides excellent insight, not only into how NOT to unintentionally hurt the singles in your community (which happens a lot), but also into how to love them in a meaningful and non-patronizing way. It is rare that I say everybody should read a book, but I genuinely think everybody should read this book. Buy one for yourself and one to share with a friend and one to put in your church library. Seriously, what this book has to say has been needed for some time, and it's an extra bonus that it's so incredibly fun to read.
