About the Author
James A. Harnish is the author of numerous books and Bible studies, including A Disciple’s Path, Strength for the Broken Places, Simple Rules for Money, and You Only Have to Die. He is an acclaimed pastor and ordained elder in The United Methodist Church who has led congregations throughout Florida, most recently Hyde Park in Tampa where he served for twenty-two years. In 2014, after forty-two years of active ministry, he retired from full-time ministry and moved to Winter Haven, Florida, where he lives with his wife, Marsha, and enjoys writing, reading, and playing with his grandchildren.

Justin LaRosa is a licensed clinical social worker and Deacon who leads the new ministry of Hyde Park United Methodist Church in downtown Tampa, Florida. He served for eight years as the Minister of Discipleship, working with a team of leaders to facilitate the process of organizing, training, empowering, and supporting laypersons. Justin is co-author with James A. Harnish of A Disciple's Path and A Disciple's Heart.

A Book Of Modest Accomplishments

If you are looking for a particularly dry book that gives fairly commonplace details about the content of every book of the Bible, arbitrarily divides the Bible into various historical periods and provides a lot of questions for students of the Bible to answer on their own (without providing those answers), this is a good place to look. To be fair, this book is a very old one, probably used as a textbook back when people read Bibles in school (it has the feel of being used as as form of Bible education in a formal classroom setting). As the work of a Texan doctor of divinity, it represents early 20th century biblical scholarship of a conservative Protestant fashion.

The first eight chapters of this book seek to provide introductory material to the Bible of a very rudimentary and straightforward fashion, giving some reasons why we believe in the Bible based on internal and external evidence, a discussion of the names of God (at least as they were known to early 20th century Protestants with a limited knowledge of Hebrew), the sacred offices, the seven covenants, the divisions of scripture, the various supposed dispensations (as the author is a clear dispensationalist), the ages and divisions of biblical history and some notable personages in the Bible. The rest of the book contains a rather uneven summary of the books of the Bible with their contents, comments about their author and theme and perspective and questions for the reader (who is presumably a student).

As might be expected to be the case, a greatly disproportionate amount of the text of this book focuses on the New Testament, with a particular spirit that always seems on the verge of, if not actually crossing over into, a spirit of antinomianism. The author's knowledge of Hebrew and biblical ways appears very limited and largely second hand. To his credit, the author does not claim any great originality of thought or expression (nor is it to be found in this work), but the lack of biblical understanding of the author does make this work of limited value for believers. Mind you, within those limits it is a book that is of modest pleasure and accomplishment, but it is very limited. However, a point in this book's favor is that it does occasionally contain within its dry outline form answers to particularly notable questions within Christianity, including a refutation of the idea that Peter was the first Prelate of Rome, doing so economically but with some skill. On other questions, like the Sabbath, the book has little of worth to offer whatsoever.

Therefore, those who read this book should be aware of its limitations, so as to not have too high expectations of the work, but also to enjoy the occasional details the book does offer that is of interest. Generally speaking, the beginning of each chapter discussing the book of the Bible is the best part, giving a biographical account of the author and a brief historical introduction to the context of the work. What follows after this are largely superficial accounts of the organization of material (some of the time, such as in Judges, not showing any awareness of the chiastic form of organization within it, and failing to do justice to its structural integrity) as well as basic questions for the reader to determine how many times certain words or expressions are used in certain texts by certain authors (for example). For those who appreciate its limits and its dry and superficial nature, this book is of some interest to contemporary students of the Bible, so long as they are content with texts and no illustrations or charts or diagrams to liven the presentation any.

This book is written as an outline of the Bible, not the Bible itself

Josiah Tidwell Blake taught scripture at Baylor University in Texas for 36 years. He was memorialized there when Tidwell Bible Building was erected on Baylor's campus. Sixty-eight limestone panels, each a ton and carved by talented craftsmen, tell the story of the Bible in a panorama encircling the Tidwell Bible Building.

I would recommend this book to any who would like a little insight into each chapter of the Bible.

Cindy doesn't pretend to have all the answers, but provides a relatable picture of God's greater plan for our lives sprinkled with honesty & lots of laughs. So although this book was not necessarily geared towards me I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and found that it had meaning that .

While I am not a woman, I am single and a Christian. So although this book was not necessarily geared towards me I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and found that it had meaning that I could relate to the struggles I face in my own romantic relationships and my walk with Jesus. Each experience I encounter is a personal experience and one of the great realizations that came from reading this book is that while my experiences are my own everyone is going through or has gone through similar trials in their life. The individual testimonies give a great insight to what goes through our minds when we are faced with choosing to indulge our desires of the flesh or our love for Jesus. We know what's right and wrong in the eyes of the Lord but how do we apply it? In the, "heat of the moment" how do we keep our faith over come our desires? It's certainly not an easy task and I know I've fallen short on many occasions. It really helped to hear how others dealt with the situations in the moment and in the aftermath. Cindy's reflections on the stories really help to tie everything together and made me reflect on my own walk and how going forward I want to respond to situations. It's also wildly entertaining, had me laughing out loud and wanting to keep turning the pages to hear the next disaster of an experience.

Dr. Jonathan Akin is the Pastor of Fairview Church in Lebanon, TN, a suburb outside of Nashville. He is a founding member of a movement of young leaders called Baptist21. Jonathan also serves an adjunct professor at Union University and the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Jonathan has a BA from Boyce College, and he received his M.Div. and Ph.D. in Old Testament from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Jonathan is married to Ashley. Great stuff here. Enjoyed reading this book. Jonathan provides, in a short but thorough way, why Proverbs is much more than a "Christian Aesop's fables" or as he says "Dear Abby".
Although I am a layman, I appreciated the insights that will allow me to see Christ in the book of Proverbs more clearly.

Helpful and practical!

A worthwhile addition to any library. Akin shows the principles of how to preach Christ from the book of Proverbs. He stayed true to the nature of Wisdom Literature but has high Christology in his Biblical theology. I've been preaching for twelve years and this book added freshness to an upcoming sermon series from the book of Proverbs.

Good, but....

This is a very cute book and all the kids in my Sunday school class liked it. Unfortunately some of the parents were irate that I would read a book about bunnies and eggs. The message is this--When you see bunnies and eggs this easter, they represent new life and remind us of the new resurrected life we have in Christ. So...this is a warning....do not read this book to children who have legalistic parents, unless you enjoy being the target of persecution.
