I look forward to learning more about these men, and a few boys

Some men of the Bible are colorful, and some seem a tad boring or nondescript since very little is recorded about them. But the biggies make this book most interesting and focused. You have Adam, of course, to start off the race. King Saul and King Ahab--similar in some ways and very diverse in others. Whoever they are, our pondering on their places in God's history expands our minds, and in some cases deepens our commitment to God's way.

No matter who they are, the author maintains that "one truth remains secure. God shines His enduring love through every believer's life." That includes us today. Mordecai's life shows us a godly man's concern for his people in exile in Babylon, and threatened with extinction. Then to Egypt, where Potiphar is instrumental (in a negative way) for Joseph becoming the Prime Minister and saving millions from starvation.

Like me, you likely know more about New Testament characters than Old Testament. John becomes a "fisher of men." This selection seems out of sync because the author then goes back to Old Testament people -- Methuselah, Abednego, Judah, and more. Interspersed chapters on meaning of these men's names help too. But some men are nameless to us -- the healed leper, the centurion, a rich young ruler, the boy who gives away his lunch. And one "man" is an eight-year-old boy, King Josiah. What a story here!

Near the end of the book, we have a Scripture index--that would help us read the stories as they appear in the Bible. We also have an alphabetical index of the characters. The final index is of the seven contributing authors. All of these make this book more than a mere devotional; it can also serve for study purposes. I look forward to both its devotional and study impact for me.

Very Short Devo about Men of the Bible

Men of the Bible....very short Devotional ....but very good! Packed with just what you need to know in a very concise form. I have only needed to read a few before I was mentally nodding my head in agreement
or puzzling in my mind, 'Do I do that/say that?'
I think this is great for men or women!! (I'm a woman)

It is recommended that this three-volume work be listened to quickly once. Then, lay it aside and wait until the Holy Spirit leads one into a certain stage of spiritual life when knowledge and understanding are needed. Turn, then to the special section of the book dealing with that particular experience for enlightenment. Thus, it will be realized that in Thy light, shall we see light (Ps. 36:9). A very dangerous book...

Jesus teaches that when He judges our service to Him, some of our works will go up in smoke like "wood, hay and stuble"? What if, upon God's examination of your efforts, He determines that our motives are tainted by our own pride, desire for pleasure, attention-seeking, or self-affirmation? And if there is such a danger, how can we identify and avoid it?
Brother Nee exposes these perils in unflinching detail and concludes unapologetically that the only solution is for the believer to die - not just once, but daily! He asserts that, while all Christians have been initially freed from sin's penalty at the Cross, many do not experience freedom from sin's power in actual experience. The result is an inconsistent life, ravaged by external temptations and internal uncertainty.
Normal spiritual progress, he explains, depends on the believer's willingness to deliver himself to the cross completely and continually. All thoughts, desires, emotions, affections, hopes, dreams, opinions, and decisions that do not proceed from the Spirit of God must be surrendered to the death of the cross. Moreover, he emphasizes that mere reform or improvement are not enough. The functions and works of the "old man" must be completely eradicated and replaced. The "new man in Christ" can not collaborate with the "old man" in God's work.
Brother Nee presents a thorough and easily comprehended description of the discrete functions of the spirit, soul and body. His analysis clearly reveals their purpose, operation, and relation both to each other and to the Holy Spirit. His focus is frequently on the "carnal" or "soulish" versus that which is "spiritual". His claims are supported by reference to the appropriate Scriptures.
You will frequently find your responses alternating between "Amen!" and "Oh me!". One thing is sure, though. You will quickly realize that your "old man" has got to go. Prayerful reading of this book and the supporting Scriptures will change you. A dangerous book indeed.

profound truths

This book opened my eyes to a whole world of spiritual reality that I had never seen or even pondered before. Once the truths of the triune nature of man are discovered, you realize where your spiritual power comes from. You understand the mechanics of being tempted and what you must do to become an overcomer. You know what you must do in order to manifest in your outward walk the purity and grace that are communicated to your spirit from God. In short, the book teaches you how to have a victorious walk with God by showing you how your spritual being operates. The knowledge Mr. Nee imparts seems so basic once it is understood, yet without his book, we may never have discovered these profound truths. This book has had a major influence in my thinking.

This book won me over

I first started reading this book with an open, but cautious, mind. As one reviewer wrote, it seemed that this book is based on only one verse, and I was a bit skeptical about it. It wasn't until I delved further into this book to discover that the one verse statement is not correct. The book is very Scriptural. The Bible many times shows the differences between the spirit and the soul, but our English translations are not always clear.

1 Cor. 2:14-15 says: "But a soulish man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God... but the spiritual man discerns all things..."

1 Cor. 15:44 says: "[Our body] is sown a soulish body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a soulish body, there is also a spiritual one."

Jude 19 says: "These [mockers] are those who make divisions; they are soulish, having no spirit."

Most translations translate the word "soulish" as "natural", but in the Greek it is the adjectival form of the word "soul". There are more passages, but these are just a few to get you started.

Those who have warned against this book are right to say that we should always put the Bible first, but they are not right in saying that it is un-Biblical. I recommend reading this book with an open mind, the Bible (and maybe Strong's Concordance) in hand, a prayerful heart, and discernment.

This is an excellent book that will really aid you in your walk with God, teaching you to walk by the Spirit and not yield to the flesh, putting your spirit, soul, and body in the proper alignment. One should remember that Mr. Nee wrote this book in his early twenties. For those familiar with his later works, the level of maturity is slightly noticable. As he grew in faith, he refined some of his teachings later. So that should be kept in mind when reading. As with all things, please compare this book's words to Scripture and prayerfully receive God's teaching. For those who want to live by the spirit, this book will definitely get you off to a great start.

"What is the significance of distinguishing the spirit from the soul? There is a great significance. It has much to do with the spiritual life of the believers. If believers do not know the boundary of their spirits, how can they understand the spiritual life? If they do not understand the spiritual life, how can they grow in their spiritual living? Because believers are either negligent or ignorant of the distinction between the spirit and the soul, they never grow in their spiritual life. Moreover, many times they take something soulish as spiritual, constantly remain in a soulish living, and do not seek after spiritual things. If we mix up what God has separated, we are bound to suffer loss."

A Must Have for every new believer or evangelist

This little book is awesome! It is very compact and fits in my purse nicely. It has the wisdom of Jesus with reflections on each passage. You will find a wealth of information inside: The Person of Jesus and His mission, the body and blood, the call to follow Jesus, and the cost of that decision as well :-) The book talks of his life and His promises, the hope of Heaven and His triumphant return. It shows us how to pray and how to forgive both ourselves and others. This is a must have for the new believer or evangelist! Thumbs up. I am ordering extras to pass out.

Needed Prodding for Reformed Churches

The Protestant Reformation is often accused of lacking missionary zeal (ix). Such accusations often reflect modern views of what constitutes evangelism and missions more than the content of historic Reformed confessions. Bredenhof argues that the Belgic Confession, the Heidelberg Catechism, and (to some degree) the Canons of Dort are missionary documents that should make our churches more missions-minded. While the author overstates his case somewhat about the missionary aim of these documents, he shows admirably that the Reformed theology summarized in these standards should promote evangelistic zeal in our churches.
This study grew out of an earlier work by the author on the Belgic Confession regarding missions. This present volume summarizes his finding from the Belgic Confession and adds his treatment of the Canons of Dort and the Heidelberg Catechism. Bredenhof makes “no strict distinction” between missions and evangelism in this work (xiii). This effectively broadens the horizons of the subject. However, the author may broaden the meaning of “missions” too much by implying that any desire to see others come to Christ expresses a missionary thrust. He noted that part of the evangelistic thrust of the Belgic Confession was directed towards those previously under Roman Catholic teaching (8-9). It seems to this reviewer that most Protestant confessions, like the Belgic Confession, that contrasted themselves with Roman Catholicism, were apologetic rather than directly evangelistic. While Bredenhof anticipates this objection to his thesis, he does not adequately acknowledge that the evangelistic aim of confessions is indirect rather than direct. Authors such as Calvin did not so much expect to “win” (20) Catholic opponents to Christ as much as to stop their mouths.
This point applies equally to his treatment of the Heidelberg Catechism. Intending the catechism for the instruction of youth (37) does not entail that the catechism is a missionary document that looks outside of the church rather than merely within the church. The Heidelberg Catechism is more positive in tone than a mere apologetic for the Christian faith, but it still falls short of seeking “to win our neighbors for Christ” (50). The value of Bredenhof’s treatment lies primary in the fact that the theology of this catechism should produce missionary zeal. He makes the vital point as well that we must communicate the gospel to the world both by word and by deed (48-51). He rightly challenges Reformed churches that are contented with transfers of membership rather than with fresh conversions (57-58).
The author’s conclusion that the Canons of Dort provide the theological foundation for missions rather the being a missionary document (76) applies equally to all Reformed confessions, including the Belgic Confession and Heidelberg Catechism. He admits that Dort is the least likely candidate for being considered as a missionary document and that no one on record has argued that it is such (68-69). However, he argues even here that since the Lord used the Canons to convert some people, then we should consider it a missionary document in some sense (71). Bredenhof rightly teaches that Reformed theology should produce missionary zeal. However, this is not the same thing as saying that Reformed confessions are missionary documents. This seems to give too much ground to contemporary assumptions about missions, which tend to make missions the foundation of theology rather than theology the foundation of missions.
Reformed theology is well-suited to make zealous missionaries and evangelists. In this reviewer’s opinion, the best way to use confessional documents evangelistically is to know them so well that they provide structure to how we present Christ and his gospel. Catechisms in particular help order our thinking and use of texts and topics even when we do not cite them directly. It is vital for us to reconnect our theology to our practices. Bredenhof does this rightly in a way that should revitalize missions. His charge to the church is fresh, necessary, and welcome.
