A Theology of the Family, by Scott T. Brown

This book presents a perspective on the family largely forgotten by the modern church. There are fifty-six authors featured in this volume; authors such as: John Bunyan, Jonathan Edwards, John Gill, William Gouge, Matthew Henry, Martin Luther, A.W. Pink, J. C. Ryle, R. C. Sproul, Charles Spurgeon and Thomas Watson. Each of them give a powerful testimony that the twenty-first-century church needs to be reminded of what she used to believe about family life. These authors bring a measure of the correction and the balm necessary to heal our amnesia and return us to biblical order.

In the mid 1990s, it began to occur to me that the modern Church had actually lost the biblical doctrine of the family. Biblical fatherhood was dead. Feminists owned womanhood. Motherhood was despised. Babies were marginalized as thieves of convenience and success. In America, we have aborted millions of children since 1973. Marriages were crumbling, and the very institution was being redefined. It was almost impossible to find men in the church who understood biblical manhood or fatherhood. The twentieth century was a bad time for the family; the trends were all running in the wrong direction, and biblical ignorance was speeding the family on its way to destruction.

Meanwhile, Jeff Pollard was doing something about it. He was toiling into the night to document a correct theology of the family. He brought these doctrines together in an organized form for the ministry of Chapel Library. If you have known Jeff for any length of time, you know that the last twelve years of his life has been defined by his ministry to Mount Zion Bible Church and the unrelenting schedule to produce the Free Grace Broadcaster, a quarterly digest of Christ-centered sermons and articles from prior centuries. It is all about recovering sound doctrine and biblical practices. Jeff has produced dozens of booklets on subjects such as the gospel, sin, repentance, the Holy Spirit, the blood of Christ, justification, sanctification, secret sins, and many other critical matters. Through Jeff’s work at Chapel Library, there is a wealth of doctrinal resources that are being shipped all over the world. He brought them together in order to correct the lapses, heal the wounds, and pass them on to the rising generation. He worked for over a decade to identify the great authors and writings of the past that could meet the problems of our day. He went back in time. He returned to eras where a Christ centered view of the family was understood much better. He has revealed the doctrine locked in the literary treasure chests of the past. I am thankful that he also did this for the doctrine of the family.

Review
A Theology of the Family is an excellent anthology featuring a wealth of mostly-forgotten material from great Christian leaders of the past 500 years... In fact, the current dearth of biblical wisdom, combined with the rapid decline of the family as an institution, illustrates precisely why the material in this book is more truly relevant and more desperately needed than ever. --Phil Johnson, Executive Director of Grace to You, Sun Valley, CA

This volume is a spiritual buffet for Christian family life, a delicious smorgasbord of short selections largely drawn from treasured Reformed writers. It dishes up biblical truth, loading the table with meaty explanation, sweet comfort, and well-spiced exhortation for fathers, mothers, children, and young people. --Dr. Joel R. Beeke, President of Puritan Reformed theological Seminary, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and author of A Puritan Theology

There are many books on the family, so why another one? This is not another one ! I commend A Theology of the Family because it is a compilation of some of the best articles on the subject of the family from proven teachers of the last five hundred years. --Conrad, Mbewe, pastor of Kabwata Baptist Church, in Lusaka Zambia, and author of Foundations for the Flock: Truths About the Church for All the Saints

About the Author

Scott T. Brown is the director of the National Center for Family-Integrated Churches and elder at Hope Baptist Church in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Scott graduated from California State University in Fullerton with a degree in History and received a Master of Divinity degree from Talbot School of Theology. He gives most of his time to local pastoral ministry, conferences on fatherhood, church reformation, and strengthening the family. He has been married to Deborah for thirty one years, and they have four grown children. Scott also helps people think through the two greatest institutions God has provided the church and the family.

By God s grace Jeff Pollard was converted to Jesus Christ from a career in rock music in the early 1980s. Though religious from his youth, his true conversion at age thirty brought him to understand and then to preach God s sovereign grace. God s Spirit and Word awakened him to his responsibilities as husband and father as well as to God s vision for families. Jeff is now an elder of Mt. Zion Bible Church, Pensacola, Florida. He is the editor of the Free Grace Broadcaster and author of Christian Modesty and the Public Undressing of America and Do You Know Jesus Christ?

Incredible Resource of Godly Wisdom
By Rick Haluszka
I received my copy in the mail yesterday, and all I can say is: WOW, what an incredible resource!! As I looked through it, I could not stop thanking the Lord for His provision of this book. The wisdom found in this thick volume will undoubtedly serve me, my wife, my family, and my ministry for the rest of our lives. The content ranges from godly manhood/womanhood, to pursuing God-honoring fatherhood/motherhood; from looking for a spouse, to issues regarding the marriage union; from bringing up children together, to how to handle a child who has forsaken the faith; and from standing against abortion, to many other practical concepts.

The format makes it very special, in my opinion. It contains writings from sermons and articles of godly men over the past 500 years— Spurgeon, JC Ryle, Jonathan Edwards, Luther, A.W. Pink, William Gouge, John Bunyan, Thomas Watson, Matthew Henry, and many other men who have gained insight from the Scriptures and their experiences of seeking to lead/shepherd their families and churches. These excerpts are not too lengthy either. They are laid out in such a way that will make a daily reading of this 700p book seamless and non-burdensome. My wife and I cannot wait to sit down and study through this together, gleaning wisdom from what the Lord had taught these men.

Also, as a side note, if you are worried that this is "just another NCFIC pitch" to knock youth ministry or whatever, it is not. First, notice the men on the back who have endorsed this book (Phil Johnson & Conrad Mbewe). It is even recommended by Sam Waldron, who has offered a brotherly critique of the group. Second, though I personally do not totally agree with everything the NCFIC holds to, they are sounding a very important alarm for that the Church should listen to..especially us men! Scott Brown and Jeff Pollard have done an incredible service to the body of Christ with this work on the family, and they ought to be commended for their efforts.

Might God be glorified as we seek to be sacrificial, servant-minded shepherds for our families...Sola Deo Gloria!

P.S. Buy it!!

This is a gem! Highly recommend!
By Sam
This is an absolute gem! Love how this book is laid out into sections such as Fatherhood, Motherhood, Husband, Wife, etc. The various authors gives you a glimpse into the wisdom of each without the need to read other books individually. I bought it as gift for my husband but now I am reading it as well

Powerful, needful, complete
By Kelly Crawford
I'm not sure there is a more thorough, more poignant resource for the Christian family than this book. Couched in the eloquent, powerful language of former days, the timeless truths and biblical direction offered here are invaluable for the family striving to honor the Lord and impact the culture for His glory. I pray every Christian family gets a copy.

The Kingdom Way: How the Kingdom of God Transforms our Lives, Churches, and Cities, by Keith Wood

The Kingdom Way shows how the Kingdom of God can influence our lives, churches, and cities for Christ. It relies on Scripture to develop a clear and compelling vision of the Kingdom of God that is simple, and yet provides a powerful and coherent model for many areas of life and ministry. The first chapter lays out a clear, precise, and biblical definition of the Kingdom of God as it exists today. The following chapters develop practical applications by carefully examining the Kingdom of God, and seeing how various components of it can be applied in our lives, churches, and cities. Some of the topics covered include the centrality of the Word of God, the importance of confession in our walk with God, abiding in Christ for empowerment from Him, unity in the church, and the need for prayer to bring the power of God in all these areas. The book builds toward the conclusion that the Kingdom of God is meant to be a visible, transformative force within cities, and goes on to paint a clear picture of what that looks like. Using historic and recent examples of cities that have undergone radical transformation through the Gospel, the book makes the case that transformation of our cities is something we must all work toward, and can actually see happen in our time. Far from theoretical, however, the book is immensely practical. Its groundbreaking, thoughtful approach to application will clarify your understanding of the Kingdom, and provide guidance and encouragement as you join with Jesus in working for the transformation of your city. It should be of interest to all Christians devoted to growth and ministry, and will be of particular interest to pastors, elders, and mature and maturing believers.

Transforming Our World
By Ed Moore
The Kingdom Way provides a Biblically-based mandate for Christians to first recover their own personal holiness and relationship with God, then changing the culture of their cities with a proper understanding of relationships with God, fellow believers, and their neighbors. The author describes the prerequisite to change in the sometimes lengthy and painful act of personal confession of sin leading to peace, strength and power in relationships and ultimately the culture at-large. The Kingdom Way provides historical understanding of the purpose and methodology for Christians and churches to empower each other, their church leadership, and their public acts of prayer and spiritual living to enact the salvation of cities, the cultural center of states and nations. Emphasis resides in living in union with Jesus, the necessity of unity in the church, the kingdom authority residing in the true nature of the Godhead, and pursuit of the goal of salvation for the cities. Through confession, prayer, the power of congregations and the unity of many churches united in "devotion to unity, prayer, fasting, and spiritual warfare" change can and will occur. The author has outlined historical and current steps with hundreds of scripture verses and a proper theological understanding of their use for instruction, proof and application. This well-written and well-explained book is of great use for pastors, Sunday School teachers, elders, Bible-study leaders and home small groups.

John Frame's Selected Shorter Writings, Volume 1, by John M. Frame

Short, pointed essays summarize some of John Frame’s central (and a few peripheral) ideas on theological method, apologetics, and ethics, beginning with Frame’s shortest and clearest presentation of his signature concept of triperspectivalism—the need to read Scripture from various perspectives, especially threefold perspectives that reflect the nature of the Trinity.

“Before this book was published, most of these rare theological, philosophical, and practical gems had been hidden away in Frame’s electronic files or posted on websites and blogs not widely known to the public. Do yourself a favor and mine the rich truths in these winsome and provocative essays (written in Frame’s inimitable style of robust charity) on a wide array of important topics.”
—Steven L. Childers, President and CEO, Global Church Advancement

“John wrote this book so that the average person could understand it, which is a concept introduced by the apostle Paul but little employed ever since. It’s like the nine-hundred-pound gorilla wrestling with a newborn and restraining himself: John could do a number on us intellectually, but he prefers to communicate for the sake of the kingdom of God.”
—Andrée Seu Peterson, Senior Writer, WORLD magazine

“A veritable cornucopia of Frame’s theology. . . . Frame is not afraid to slay sacred cows . . . if he believes they don’t pass biblical muster. Whether you have never read Frame before or have read all that he’s written to date, this book will inform, intrigue, encourage, edify, rouse, and convict you.”
—P. Andrew Sandlin, President, Center for Cultural Leadership

John M. Frame (A.B., Princeton University; B.D., Westminster Theological Seminary; M.A. and M.Phil., Yale University; D.D., Belhaven College) holds the J. D. Trimble Chair of Systematic Theology and Philosophy at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando and is the author of many books, including the four-volume Theology of Lordship series.

Review
"In comparison with the 'feast' of John Frame’s major works, these are the 'nuggets.' They still offer vintage Frame, and I heartily recommend them for their wisdom, balance, and incisiveness. Some have a more personal, informal tone, and will usefully complement Frame’s major writings, especially for those who want to understand the connection of his writings to the person behind them." --—Vern Poythress, Professor of New Testament Interpretation, Westminster Seminary

"Dr. Frame has produced a series of theological articles that will engage the reader to consider more carefully the correct understanding of various Christian ideas that will confront him in the progress of dogmatic thought. Dr. Frame is committed to being biblical with a focus on being 'balanced' in one’s theological perspective. For Professor Frame, being 'biblically balanced' expresses his goal of a lifetime of teaching theology. He has not only sought to express orthodox doctrine from a biblical perspective, but also to convey a theology that is capable of affecting a Christian's total world and life view. Theology is not an abstract study. Understanding theology not only requires us to correctly understand the propositional truth of Scripture, but it also seeks to engage each believer in their daily walk with Christ. This excellent book is a must read for anyone who seeks to be challenged in their understanding of biblical and theological issues that face the Church of Jesus Christ today." --—Dr. Kenneth Gary Talbot, President, Whitefield Theological Seminary, Lakeland, Florida

"John wrote this book so that the average person could understand it, which is a concept introduced by the Apostle Paul but little employed ever since. It’s like the 900-pound gorilla wrestling with a newborn and restraining himself: he could do a number on us intellectually, but he prefers to communicate for the sake of the kingdom of God." --—Andree Seu Peterson, WORLD magazine

A great introduction to those who are new to Frame's Writing
By Chris Ho
If you have been in the reformed circles long enough, you would have surely came across the name John Frame. Frame has often been praised for his lucidness, but frankly when I first tried to read his books (AGG, SBL), I went away rather confused. So it was with trepidation and a deeper desire to be better able to appreciate this theologian that I took up the task of reading this book. And boy was I glad I that made this decision.

The book starts with an essay on (tri)Perspectivalism, a great introduction to the distinctiveness of the way John Frame approaches theology. This essay is the best short introduction to the famed tri-perspectivalism and it is apt that the book begins with this particular essay.

The first two sections spend the majority of the time dealing with the theological topics that are the forte of Frame. In it, Frame raises many basic yet important and thoughtful questions that spurs the readers to become better exegetes (see his essay on what the bible does not say, in particular) and to think more deeply and thoughtfully over theology.

Following which, the next section discusses about apologetics -- another area of his forte. It is however regrettably a little too short! (only 3 essays on it). One would have wish that the second volume would hopefully have more articles on this topic. Following which, some essays on the topic of ethics and worship. These chapters, I feel were a mix bag, some were really good, (see his Family, Church and State: A Triperspectival Approach), some were just his responses to reviews, which probably helps you understand his DCL better.

Lastly, it ends off with some personal essays about the author himself, letting the readers take a sneak peek into the life of the author and a list of 100 books that have most influenced him.

Overall, I found that the chapters were not evenly spread, some were long, some were really, really short, which seems odd even for a book titled "Shorter writings", one would have wished that John Frame could have expanded some of the shorter ones to make this volume "fuller". Even so, the short articles were often insightful and perceptive, many a times after reading a few paragraphs, one is made to pause and ponder over what was written. And I think, one of the greatest gains from reading this book is that one would surely begin to think more "perspectivally" after reading it.

This book is surely recommended to the younger or newer audience who hopes to dip into John Frame but fear his larger and more challenging works. May this be the first stepping stone towards reading more of Frame for yourself.

Rating 4.25/5

Fans of John Frame must get this
By SLIMJIM
This is a collection of various essays and articles written by John Frame over the years that hasn’t been published, with some being articles on his website and others being shared for the first time. For anyone who is a fan of Frame this is a great supplement to the many works that Frame has written over the years. Ideally those who have a little exposure to John Frame’s writings (say a book or two or some journal articles by him) will benefit the most from this book. John Frame can write very lengthy books so I appreciate the format of shorter essays in this book. In particular I found the first chapter that serves as a great introduction and summary of his perspectivalism. This essay is very important in light of how some within the Reformed camp have misunderstood his position as relativism. If some of his opponents have known about this essay it might have deterred some of the unhelpful criticisms of John Frame out there (or then again it might not).

I also found the various articles in part one of the book that focus on theological method to be a wonderful feast for the mind—in fact it’s probably the best part of the book. Specifically I enjoyed his discussion about contrast and exegesis, with his call for preachers and theologians to properly extract what exactly the Scripture is saying and then correctly noting what the contrast of the idea is; this is important when we say that the Bible prohibit or refute something and people often err in saying what the Bible is against when in actuality the Scripture didn’t prohibit or contradict it.

In part two of the book on theological meditation I appreciated his review of N.T Wright’s bibliology in which Frame showed how Wright overstretched his rhetoric when he claimed in the subtitle of a recent book that he has gone beyond the “Bible Wars” by offering another alternative. In reality Wright didn’t really offer anything new and it turns out instead that at times he is unhelpful because he isn’t clear or too ready with the cliché. At times Wright turns out to be still quite conservative in his view of the Bible despite how he rags on conservatives. Frame also did a good job of showing Wright’s complaint to move beyond the concept of infallibility is inconsistent with his job of being a Bible historian is still dedicated to defending the historicity of the Bible.

Surprisingly the shortest part of the book was the section on apologetics. Here I have to level a criticism of Frame’s review of Greg Bahnsen’s Presuppositional Apologetics: Stated and Defended. After going through carefully what Frame has to say, I thought the essay really was not a review of the book but more of a celebration and recollection of Greg Bahnsen the apologist. Frame criticized Bahnsen for being unfair to Gordon Clark, Carnell and Schaeffer but Frame doesn’t really demonstrate that Bahnsen really was unfair in his critique of these men. It was more of a comment made in passing rather than actual documentation it was so.

The last section was more personal and had several assorted pieces that reveal more of John Frame the man. If you are a big fan of Frame you would love this section and Frame is pretty funny. I recommend this work to those who want to understand more of Frame’s contribution to theology and apologetics and those who want to get every work by Frame. These two types of readers will benefit most from this book.

A Good Introduction to a Gifted Theologian
By Amazon Customer
John Frame is a gift of the risen Christ to the 21st century church. Those who may be a bit intimidated by some of his larger works (such as his brilliant Lordship Series) may find in these shorter writings a good place to start in benefiting from Frame's Bible saturated, God glorifying, Christ centered approach to theology.

Review
The psalms have long been recognized as a treasure found in the heart of our scriptures.  With this project, one hears these psalms as a slowly unfolding gift, shaped by the color and inflection of the human voice.  Even with the familiar psalms, one finds oneself hearing them anew, noticing things that the inner voice of one's own silent reading or the spoken prayers of church or synagogue might not bring to mind in the same way.  If good St. Augustine once famously heard a child's voice, which he took to be God's, telling him to "take and read," one might say of this unique project:  "Take and listen!" —Prof. Dr. Mark Burrows, University of Applied Sciences

The tone is literary and modest in these Psalm recitations. There is no urge to inspire, no devotional excess.  The prayer is authentic and straightforward. —Br. Paul Quenon

Listen. Sssssshhhh. Really, just listen.
Listen to the Psalms. Listen to all one hundred fifty of these ancient prayers — one psalm after another, one voice after another, without music or interlude, without commentary or homily. Just ssssshhh, listen and let the Psalms settle over your spirit with Hear My Prayer: The Audio Book of Psalms (Paraclete Press 2015).
It matters that we give voice to Scripture. And it matters that we listen to Scripture, not only with the ears of our hearts but also with the ears of our bodies, so that flesh and spirit hear together. Listening to the many different voices of Hear My Prayer, I realize this again. When lifted from the page to the ear, the Psalms come alive with emotion and we are reminded that prayer is the embodied expression of our lives to the Holy One. In the voices of Hear My Prayer, the Psalms echo with the joy and the gentleness, the sorrow and the trust of this thing called faith.
Listening to Hear My Prayer, individual psalms suddenly catch my ear and I wonder, “Have I never heard or read this psalm?!” Through the voice of Paula Huston, for example, Psalm 102 is surprisingly ethereal as I imagine God’s celestial perspective on the nations of the earth and on the fleeting nature of my days. Meanwhile Psalm 10, read by Jack Levison, sighs anew to my spirit. And Paul Quenon’s articulation of certain psalms reminds me of the rhythm of our prayers, of the ways that our hearts’ murmurs weave and dance and sway to the ear of God.
Then there is this line from Psalm 45, read by Margaret Manning Shull: “My tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe” — oh! how have I missed the delight of this verse until now?
Hear My Prayer: The Audio Book of Psalms is an unexpected gift to my spirit. I who unapologetically surround myself constantly with sound — music at work, music in the car, television at home, conversations with colleagues and family and friends, plus the constant “noise” of social media — I find surprisingly restful stillness in listening to this collection of voices, to this collection of ancient prayers, to the spaces of silence around each word, to the calming tempo and timbre of the psalms given voice.
In full disclosure as I commend this newly-released audio book to you, I had the pleasure of recording three of the psalms for Hear My Prayer. And, in full disclosure, I’m really just one of the “ordinary Christians” of the audio book’s description: “The Psalms were written by human beings, and here, they are read by human beings — a wide range of ordinary and extraordinary Christians.” The list of more extraordinary readers includes such notables as James Martin SJ and Joan Chittister, Scot McKnight and Cathleen Falsani.
I pray that you will be blessed by Hear My Prayer as I have been. —Rachel G. Hackenberg

Down through the centuries, monastics have been encouraged to work with the psalms in a devotional or transformational context -- chanting, studying, and meditating upon them. These poetic songs have also been very popular with other clergy and lay people.
Paraclete Press has put together an impressive group of Christians to recite Psalms 1- 150 using the NRSV translation. Among the readers are James Martin, Sr. Joan Chittister, Cathleen Falsani, Paula Huston, Carl McColman, and many others.
Listening closely to the five hours of readings, we were able to hear in the Hebrew Psalter three major perspectives: the wisdom psalms with a hope in the divine order of things; the lament psalms as human beings struggle in a sea of troubles; and the hymns of praise where God is revered for creativity and grace.
As you make your own pilgrimage with these four CDs, you might want to supplement this journey with the spiritual insights of other explorations of these sacred texts:
Cynthia Bourgeault's Chanting the Psalms
Nan C. Merrill's Psalms for Praying
Nahum M. Sarna's On the Book of Psalms: Exploring the Prayers of Ancient Israel
Another perspective is offered by poet Daniel Berrigan in his Uncommon Prayer: A Book of Psalms:
"Long before I went to jail, my family and friends had accepted the idea that the scripture, more specifically the psalms, were our landmark, a source of sanity in an insane time. The psalms spoke up for soul, for survival; they pled for all, they bonded us when the world would break us like dry bones. They made sense, where the 'facts' — scientific, political, religious — made only nonsense. For me, the psalms gave coloration and texture to life itself; gave weight to silence, the space between words that, like the white Cezanne painting, intensify form and color, their other side, a sweet cheat, almost a third dimension." —Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat, Spirituality and Practice

On the four audio CDs comprising Hear My Prayer, listeners hear every one of the Bible's 150 psalms read in sequence. A wide variety of individuals lend their voices. Some are authors whose names may be familiar: James Martin, Paula Huston, Jon M. Sweeney, Joan Chittister, Albert Hasse and Scott Cairns. Other readers of one or more psalms will be unknown to most listeners; assorted clergy, academics, and a few employees at Paraclete Press. No music or other extras distract; each reader simply announces the psalm, then reads it.
An insert with Hear My Prayer suggests that listeners first experience the entire set straight through. Listening to the psalms in succession affords a sense of their timeless power and poetry. The cumulative effect of the succession of various readers—male and female, in differing accents and tones—suggests a chorus of voices and heightens awareness of the universality of these verses.
The presentation in Hear My Prayer of these ancient songs of praise, lament, supplication, and celebration will be a useful tool for private meditation. It will perhaps be especially valuable for people with vision impairments or other difficulties with reading the printed word.—Monica Tenney, Congretional Libraries Today

Review
Hear My Prayer offers those committed to reading and opportunity to hear the prayers of the Psalms offered by contemporary voices of faith.  It is a rich compendium and a sumptuous audible feast of all 150 Psalms.  I enjoyed participating in the project, and have enjoyed listening even more! —Margaret Manning, ordained minister and writer for Ravi Zacharias International Ministries

The recording is awesome for another reason as it is done by all ...
By Dr. Eileen Quinn Knight
I bought two copies of "Hear my Prayer" one for myself as I drive to the University and one for a retired Bishop. Others have written of the amazement of just listening. In returning from the Holy Land, I know where the psalms were written. It is so evident. One feels God's very breathe. The recording is awesome for another reason as it is done by all the voices in the Universe: male, female, young, old, Palestinian, Irish, Jewish and all voices are included. To hear the great writer, James Martin, S.J and many others is a delightful experience. I would encourage all to purchase this recording, it is a great way to start your day and get in tune with your God. No road rage just the wonderful psalms. The ones that are violent, I ask God to protect those this day who are subjected to violence. May their day be filled with peace.

Finding My Worth
By Jackie McNutt
"To every woman who has ever doubted her own worth. Or who doesn't know where to go from where she is. Or is losing heart"
So begins a journey into this beautiful leather clad book of long form devotions, that will open your mind and heart to see yourself as God sees you, not the flawed woman we so easily label ourselves.
I loved this book because we can lose ourselves in the busyness of life and often think we are less than who we were created to be.
With heart touching examples and encouragement Darlene Sala has covered many areas in our lives where we feel vulnerable to doubt, and believe God looks at us and judges us the same way we do ourselves.
With gentle encouragement the meditations lead us on a different path, where we come to know that we are precious in God's heart and we can emerge stronger and more self assured in that truth.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who longs for healing in their heart and spirit.
This book is a keeper, and one I will read often.
I received this book from Barbour Publishing in exchange for my honest review.

Loved this Devotional
By Bookshelf Fridays
With encouraging words, relatable stories, and impactful verses, Darlene challenges us to see how valuable we are. That we were created with a distinct purpose and plan by a God who loves us immeasurably. Each day was a gentle nudge to grasp this understanding along with specific verses to fortify that belief.

It was easy to read and a great addition to my morning devotional time. This would make a great gift for yourself, a friend, or your daughter.

A great gift
By Amazon Customer
If you know a woman who may need a reminder of her worth, this book may do the trick. There are topics about our relationship with God, which have short, practical stories to apply. The stories are both enjoyable and relatable. Bible scripture is given for each topic.

This is a small book--dainty and gift-like, and each topic is about 7 pages long. This would make a great gift for teenage girls and elderly women alike.

Helps to Intercession, by Andrew Murray

“Helps to Intercession” has been written to help believers to follow the Scriptural command to “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess, 5:17). But how can we do this, you may ask, when we are surrounded by the cares of daily life? We may as well ask how a mother can love her child without ceasing; how the eyelid can hold itself ready to protect the eye without ceasing; or how we can breathe and feel and hear without ceasing. All of these ceaseless activities are the functions of a healthy, natural life. And if our spiritual life is healthy, under the full power of the Holy Spirit, praying without ceasing will be natural as well.

Does praying without ceasing refer to continual acts of prayer, in which we are to persevere till we obtain, or to the spirit of prayerfulness that should animate us all day long? It includes both. The example of our Lord Jesus shows us this. We have to enter our closet for special seasons of prayer, we are at times to persevere there in persistent prayer. We are also to walk all day long in God’s presence, with the whole heart set upon heavenly things.

Know your calling; begin your work. Give yourself wholly to it, and before you know it you will find this attitude of “praying always” (Eph. 6:18) without you. Just be sure to do your work. Christ chose you and appointed you to pray for others.

About the Author
Andrew Murray (1828–1917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor. Murray considered missions to be "the chief end of the church." Andrew pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860. In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. After Martha Osborn married George Howe, they formed the South East Africa General Mission (SEAGM) in 1891. SAGM and SEAGM merged in 1894. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission's name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with SIM in 1998 and continues to this day. He died on January 18, 1917, four months before his eighty-ninth birthday. Over the years he has influenced many, including Jessie Penn-Lewis, a key figure in the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival.

Helps you pray for things that matter to God
By PM
My wife and I wanted to start practicing intercession for things that mattered to God. In this book, Andrew Murray has covered various topics that cover a lot of areas of the world and we quickly start realizing that these are things that matter to God. We did 1 chapter a day and it helped us focus our prayer and intercession outside of our immediately family needs. We really enjoyed the time when we went through this book and hoping to do that once again.

Little Amish Matchmaker: A Christmas Romance, by Linda Byler

Simon can't stop thinking about the pretty Amish teacher at the local one-room school. But he's ignored the sparks between them because he's so shy. So Simon's little brother, Isaac, takes matters into his own hands. He's determined to give his brother the best Christmas present ever—a date with his favorite teacher.           Amish novelist Byler brings her tender humor and skillful observation of family relationships to this holiday story. "I love Isaac's self-confidence and scheming as he prods his reluctant older brother," she smiles knowingly about the characters she's created.           Byler takes her reader straight into the Amish world as Isaac is both charmed and annoyed by his too talkative, but quite bright, Mam. He can barely tolerate his little nieces and nephews, who substantially outnumber the grown-ups when the whole family gets together. And he loves his humble circumspect Dat, although he isn't always pleased by how well Isaac sweeps the forebay in the barn. As anticipation for the Christmas program at the schoolhouse builds, Isaac cares for troubled Ruthie who stutters miserably when she practices her poem. And he wonders how much he'll have to help his brother Sim act on his growing affection for Teacher Catherine!

From Booklist
Renowned Amish romance-novelist Byler has deviated from her traditional trilogies to provide readers with a morsel of holiday goodness. Narrator Isaac Stoltzfus is a seventh-grader at the schoolhouse in his Amish community. Like most adolescents, Isaac thinks adults make the world too complicated. This especially applies to his older brother, Simon, who can’t muster up the courage to ask Isaac’s pretty teacher, Catherine, on a date. Despite preoccupation with chores and helping a friend overcome her anxiety about the impending school Christmas program, Isaac finds time to plot an encounter between Simon and Catherine. As Christmas draws closer and Simon still hasn’t acted, Isaac finds himself hoping for a miracle. The true charm of the novel lies in the tension an adult reader can detect between Isaac’s self-assured narration and the reality of the world around him, which is often different than he assumes. Byler’s tactile evocation of Amish life, and Isaac’s innocent yet revealing ponderings about tradition versus modernity, will satisfy any reader interested in the nuances of Amish culture and emotionally rich love stories. --Amber Peckham

Enjoyed Isaac's story
By Rhonda
The Little Amish Matchmaker by Linda Byler
4 STARS

The Little Amish Matchmaker is charming. Isaac is still in school and he notices that his older brother Simon likes his teacher Catherine but he is too shy to asks Teacher Catherine for a date. So he tries to help him.
Isaac is a smart teen he notices a lot of things around him and tries to help in a lot of ways. Isaac also notices what he should not be saying him and teaches alot inside his head about Pride, worldly things and what he should do.
I really like Isaac and how he goes to his friends to reach out and help a girl Ruthie who stutters all of a sudden. They give up thier recesses to help her for the Christmas
program. He finds out why all of a sudden she is stuttering and let her know that
she was okay and not worry about people judgeing her because her mom had problems.
It makes me want to be better at seeing a need and reach out to help and not judge others because they were different or family member different.
Isaac sees his teacher at different places and lets his brother know where she is. Simon then heads over and talks to Teacher catherine. But Simon still won't ask her out.
Another thing I liked about the story it showed a lot about the different foods they serve. I want to go and look up some of the reciepes.
This story also tells a bit about the different Amish families some are stricter and others are more lax but they don't stop being friends. They respect what their families rules.
Also tells a lot about the different ways they cope without electricity. You can see
a difference that Linda Byler being and living as a Amish writer brings to her books.
I was given this ebook to read in exchange for honest review from Netgalley. I have enjoyed reading Linda Byler's books.

I love Linda Byler!
By aidansmama
The Little Amish Matchmaker was a cute light-hearted spin on your traditional Amish romance/fiction. It is told through the eyes of eighth grader Isaac. Isaac sees that his brother Sim, likes his teacher Catherine, and tries many different ways to get his brother to ask her for a date. Isaac is in his last year of school and he is learning many of lifes lessons such as humilty, and not having pride, he looks out for his fellow classmates. At first I wasn't sure I was going to enjoy the book told from Isaac's perspective, but it was an enjoyable Christmas tale.

cute Amish Christmas story
By Rhonda Nash-Hall
Linda Byler has written a very cute story about the younger brother matchmaking his brother, Sim, with his teacher, Catherine. Sim and Catherine seem quite stubborn and uncooperative. Will Isaac finally give up on them ever getting together or will he remain persistent to the end?
I enjoyed seeing the one-room Amish school children preparing for their annual Christmas play and program for their families. It was very touching for Isaac to be so concerned about Ruthie and her stuttering problem. He shows a very compassionate heart...not something you always see in children that age. It was refreshing to witness the assistance he and his friends gave her.
This is a very quick read at only 88 pages. It can easily be finished in one sitting. One thing of interest that I noticed was the women wearing a kerchief to bed at night instead of their kapp. This was done so that if the woman felt the need to pray all during the night, her head would be properly covered. Many books show the females brushing their hair out at night for their husbands and leaving it uncovered. I wonder if that differs for the various Amish districts.

Black Bible Manuscripts: Why the Bible Isn't the White Man's Book, by Firpo Carr

Surprisingly, all 5 billion Bibles translated in whole or in part into nearly 3,000 languages sprang from Black African manuscripts. The oldest Hebrew Old Testament manuscripts, the oldest Greek New Testament manuscripts, and the oldest Greek translation of the Hebrew Old Testament (called the Septuagint), are all African documents. After 25 years of preparation, Firpo Carr is releasing the latest in his string of books. He is the only one who could have written it with such ferocity. A number of fragments among the world famous Dead Sea Scrolls are African documents. In fact, the oldest document among the Dead Sea Scrolls is an African manuscript. Carr brings a unique perspective since he personally worked extensively with Prof. Dr. John C. Trever, the late Bible scholar who was the first Westerner to discover the Dead Sea Scrolls and announce their existence to the world. Only a handful of scholars around the world were exposed to what was at the time the 2,000-year-old unpublished Dead Sea Scrolls. Carr was not only one of these, but was the only Black man to have done so. As a Man of Color, he was able to see through a set of lenses different from those of his colleagues. He was accorded the privilege of being in the "inner circle" since he was the first person ever to take color photographs of the oldest most complete version of the Hebrew Old Testament in the form of the 1,000-year-old Codex Leningrad B19a, located at the time in the Soviet Union, now Russian Federation. His daring adventures there made international news. Showing the influence of Black African rulers in the Hebrew Old Testament in the present book, the title “Pharaoh” is mentioned approximately 271 times in the first half of the Bible. Five pharaohs are mentioned by name, while eight remain anonymous. This book discusses an African Greek New Testament manuscript that was initially deemed the oldest of its kind until it was “re-dated” so as to lose that distinction. It was also first recognized as the best and most important manuscript in its genre. Scholars with questionable motives have even argued that the impressive Greek New Testament African manuscript is from anywhere but Africa, even though it is fabulously known as the Codex Alexandrinus, named after the Egyptian city of Alexandria from which it came. Amazingly, the Greek New Testament was "officially" cataloged in Africa in the fourth century CE. However, in the early centuries after Christ’s death, distinguished African-born Christian historians, writers, and theologians like Origen, Athanasius (who was derisively called a “black dwarf”), and St. Augustine confirmed that the 27 books of the Greek New Testament had already been assembled and collectively recognized by the first-century Christian community at large. Not knowing the above details as presented in this publication by a Black man who was in the "inner circle," some see the Bible as “the White man’s book.” While the oppressive White European Catholic Church, which sponsored the horrors of the Inquisition and engaged in other unconscionable acts, endeavored to prevent the Bible from being translated into the language of the common people, a handful of brave White European “revolutionary” translators like John Wycliffe, William Tyndale, and Martin Luther confronted the Church head-on and dared to translate the Bible in such a way that even a ‘plow boy’ could read it. Rome responded with a vengeance by hunting some of these down and burning them alive at the stake. These godly, honorable men are descriptively called "Snowballs in Hell" in the third section of this book. And what of the Black Christians who were contemporaries of the Bible translating martyrs? These and other long-overlooked and forgotten persons of African descent--peppering all strata of European society--are discussed in detail in this unparalleled piece of literature, "Black Bible Manuscripts: Why the Bible Isn’t the White Man’s Book."

    About the Author
Firpo Carr is an internationally known author, historian, scholar, Bible translator, lecturer, former radio show producer, former radio show host, university instructor, documentary producer/screenwriter/director, and newspaper columnist. He has appeared as an eminent scholar on such nationally televised documentaries as "Encounters with the Unexplained: Secrets of the Bible--What Do the Dead Sea Scrolls Tell Us?" and the prime-time specials "Ancient Secrets of the Bible I," and "Ancient Secrets of the Bible II." He was also the only Black scholar to study the secret Dead Sea Scrolls, Bible documents written on African papyrus and other material. Numerous media outlets like the Los Angeles Times, and the prestigious international journal Biblical Archaeology Review, said he was also the first person to take color photographs of the oldest complete manuscript of the Hebrew Bible: the Codex Leningrad B19a. It happened in January 1989 when the Soviet government, knowing he had studied Bible languages, invited him to photograph pages from the sacred text. Aside from co-authoring an article in the scholarly peer-reviewed two-volume encyclopedia set, African American Religious Cultures (2009), Firpo has examined ancient Biblical documents in his multiple trips to several countries, and has conducted comprehensive research at the National Library of Russia, the Israel Museum (Shrine of the Book wing), the Egyptian Museum, the British Museum, and the National Museum of Ethiopia. Furthermore, he has engaged in extensive field research, having explored artifacts and ruins in various places. And as a Bible translator, he has studied little-known fragments of the book of Matthew, reportedly the oldest New Testament fragments in existence.
