Good story

This book has a good story line but I fell like I had to stop a lot to figure out what the author was wanting to say. This book should have been proof read and corrections made prior to publishing. There are so many errors in it. But I did enjoy the story.

A Timely and Timeless Read!

It is quite evident through this book that Ken Behr loves Jesus, The Church, and people in general. Desiring to see us all in UNITY and as ONE with and in God and with one another just as Jesus prayed to God the Father prior to His beating and death on The Cross, Dr. Behr does a phenomenal job in not only reminding us, but bringing us back to the true essentials of the life that we all have been created for, and invited into through Jesus Christ. Born out of his own journey which he so openly and creatively shares early in the book, and through his commitment to credible research and his life experiences, Ken treats us to not only a fascinating read, but I believe to all being personally and lovingly challenged as to whether we are subtly, or not so subtly, allowing non-essentials to dilute our personal love for God and for each other - for exactly what God created us and called us to do; Love God. Love People. Speaking as a pastor and having personally been a part of a few of Ken's discussion groups years ago called Catholic Connections, and to see the minds and hearts of so many people open and sense freedom from what I and we as the Church at times can do by inadvertently mixing up what is "God's doctrine" and what is "A specific church's cultural preference," there is such clear evidence that it doesn't have to be this way. God has called us to something so much greater, and in this book being biblical-based, God provides us His wisdom and desire for us to be ONE, through His Word, and as the basis for this must-read. Take the challenge to not only learn Ken's story and some fascinating history, but get ready to be ignited in your faith, taking family and others with you, as you passionately pursue the essentials of Jesus, UNITY, and being ONE!

I have not been a "Catholic" per se, but ...

I have not been a "Catholic" per se, but I have been a wandering "Lutheran." Pastor Kenneth Behr hits it out of the park by explaining that our roots of faith are similar to Luther's and Augustine's. By their own admission and wandering God led them to the belief that "the righteous live by faith!" This is the same for all Christians! I too had to end my own wandering and embrace this faith in Christ.

Jesus Christ prayed for us all to be unified as one holy catholic church. We, Protestants and Catholics, are the holy church and the future bride that is awaiting His return. Pastor Behr emphasis is not upon the earthly divisions of things, dogmas, traditions, or cultural differences. But instead points us to the firm foundations of faith as outlined in the Nicene Creed.

This is the BIG picture that Pastor Kenneth Behr so clearly illustrates that by "coming together as one, the Body of Christ will bring revival." Just as Behr explains, I am reminded of Jesus' prayer for the church "that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me...they may be one even as we are one" (Joh. 17:21-22). This is certainly something I want to be part of and will continue to embrace the wonder that is found through the unity of Christ's Holy Catholic Church. May we (the Church) all await the return of our groom, Jesus Christ.

Awesome book to read!

As a former Catholic, I was most interested in reading this book to see what the author's motive was in writing it. To my pleasant surprise, it was NOT a debate or argument pitting Catholic doctrine versus any other major Christian denomination. To the contrary, the book was and is more a book about the history of the Christian church and unity in the church than anything else. It is clear that Ken Behr, the author, supports and espouses unity in the church. Ken does this by showing the reader that all the major Christian denominations, including Catholics, share, at their core, the same major doctrines. This book is an easy to read, easy to understand yet interesting and enjoyable book. If I had to try to classify this book, I would say it is either a book on the history of the church that also supports unity in the church OR a book that attempts to unify the church by teaching us not only what we have in common but also how our basic traditions and beliefs came to be. Either way, you must add this book to your library. Whether you are a practicing or former Catholic, an evangelical Christian or anyone interested in Church history, this book is for you.

Wonderful book of Psalms and of course the Psalms are a wonderful gift from God.

I have brought this pocket book of psalms more than once before. I wear them out or lose them. I love this version as it is organized by the day of the week and by the time of day. Written in a bit of older style English - you may think there are typos but the suspect typos are really just a bit of arcane English. I recommend reading the Psalms and I recommend this wonderful pocket version. Although the book is small the type is not - while I use 2.0 reading glasses I can read this in a pinch if I forgot my glasses.

Fabulous prayer book!

I have used this little book for over 25 years and have been dying for it to become available in ebook format. The Psalms are one of the most ancient forms of prayer and no matter what I am going through, there seems to be one that fits. I highly recommend it to anyone who truly wants to understand how to speak to God.

Needs Table of Contents for Day and Liturgical Hour -- otherwise fantastic

I've been reading this book for years. Very happy to see it moved to Kindle format so I can carry it with me everywhere on my phone. I completely agree with the other reviewers. This is an amazing translation of the Psalms and the Kindle typesetting is excellent. I like the fact that they kept the illustrations -- it looks just like the printed edition. My only beef (and why I give this 4 stars instead of 5) is that the original book is keyed to the day and liturgical hour ( Matins, Lauds, Prime, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers and Compline) but the Kindle version has no Table of Contents, so there is no way to easily move from day to day, or to a specific hour in a day. I hope that Tan fixes this issue in future revisions. With that fix I would give this book five stars -- six, if I could.

EDIT: I added bookmarks to beginning of each day. These sync to all devices so it's a good enough solution to enable me to rate this book as a five.

Sharon Jaynes is an international inspirational speaker and Bible teacher for women’s conferences and events. She is also the author of several books, including Becoming the Woman of His Dreams and Becoming Spiritually Beautiful. Sharon and her husband, Steve, have one grown son, Steven, and live in North Carolina.

Very good book

This book did a good job describing what men want and giving suggestions of how to give it to them. I've read much of the same stuff before, but this was a well-written book on the topic and I'm going to keep it in my library for another read-through.

However, if you were to buy just one book on the subject of improving your relationship with your husband (which is why I bought this), I'd recommend "For Women Only" by Shaunti Feldhahn. She not only covers most of the topics in this book but she goes much more in-depth so you can really understand what men mean when they say that they want respect or whatever.

An excellent book. Highly recommended

Jaynes is a God-fearing woman who writes about what it is to love your man well. She writes beautifully, feels deeply, thinks clearly and gives today's woman -- "modern" and "traditional" alike -- a good dose of reality in a kind but direct way. The reality is, your marriage isn't about you. It's about God. Finding and marrying the right person matters, but being the right person is our calling. Great advice!

I'm single and bought this for a married friend, and ended up reading the whole thing myself on an airport layover. It's a great read even for singletons.

Great book for strengthening a marriage.

Sharon Jaynes does an excellent job of presenting information about what men really want in a marriage. She did a simple survey with hundreds of men and shares her discoveries in this book.

What I enjoyed was that she gave stories of various women who either excelled in one of the seven qualities or was an example of what not to do. Although she occasionally gave a list of "25 ways to show respect" for example, I didn't feel overwhelmed by a to do list. I think Jaynes communicates in a manner that stresses the importance of the relationship with your husband.

Sharon Jaynes made a simple statement near the end of the book that could save a lot of marriages. She wrote, "It all goes back to why we want to become the woman of his dreams. Is it to give or to get?" Just keeping or re-gaining the perspective that it is possible for me to be the woman of my husband's dreams and experience the joy of a vibrant relationship with the man I married is liberating. He didn't choose me to compete with, but rather to complete him.

Jim Newheiser has given us a little gem of parenting wisdom and grace in this booklet! Don't be fooled by the size, because the content is rich and radical. Jim cuts through all the fog and hype of so much of the Christian parenting materials and gets to the heart of what God's Word actually says that is sometimes less than what we parents were hoping for! Jim brings clarity to what we as parents can and should do, while cautioning us to take a step back from all the 'formulas' that too often spur us to charge in with a detailed plan to that too often nothing more than legalism and pride cloaked with a biblical veneer. Caution: Don't read this unless you want to be reminded of just how weak and dependent we are on God's grace and mercy in this whole parenting process! We have 9 children and were taught "forumlaic parenting" for 16 years and are now unlearning that principle. This book is an awesome "nutshell" of why formulaic parenting is NOT a good plan and why. Perfect for a husband to read, too, and get the whole idea without having to read multiple parenting books, or for older teenagers or young adults in a home with little children so that they can also get the idea of what the new parenting plan is and why. =)

One of the best parenting books out there!

Parenting is More then a Formula
The first impresion you get when you start reading this book is - ohhh great this guy just took the whole Livrare of professional books and trashed them! Well let me tell you that is not the goal of this book, i should say, the author of this book challenges all the formulas drilled into us parents with its emphasis on the fact that there are no two people alike and no two families alike so you cant just take something out of context and plow it all over the poor parents. It creates a lot of undue failure and guilt. This book challenges us parents to study our children's uniqueness and study the bible deeply and apply it into their lives in their unique way. This book is full of honest encouragement and realistic free of quilt guidance. This should be your first choice parenting book.

Brief but good

The author did what he set out to do and that was to convince parents that parenting is more than a formula.

This is not a complete work on parenting, but more of a short pamphlet reminding parents that our goal as parents is not to be successful, but rather that our goal is to point out children to Christ. He is the only one who can change hearts.

short and riddled with grammatical errors

Full of grammatical errors and names mixed up. Very short - I know it says 136 pages, but there are actually only about 36 pages. Even so, the grammatical errors are quite bad.

She’d come to Tombstone on a ruse. In a hurry to relieve her mother’s brother, and his family of her forced burden, Maddie Hawkins caught the first stagecoach out of town. Without reading the fine print in the ad, Maddie showed up with false hopes, and is now stranded in a strange town with dashed dreams, no place to stay, no food, no job, little money and no way home. An outsider, Maddie agrees to the conditions of the ad, and regretfully prepares to get on with her life.
Maddie always thought she’d marry for love, but would love win out over forced guilt and shame? Can Maddie Hawkins make a go of her new life and the mess she’s gotten herself into? After-all, she is a beautiful, young, Christian lady, caught up in a tumultuous plot of twists, turns and surprises. Will she have to throw caution to the wind and marry for survival, or will the handsome cowboy of her dreams ride in on a white horse in the nick of time?
I must admit, this is the first writings I have read by Bayarr, and I am pleased to say, she will be on my list of Favorite Authors. Her writings are good, clean fun . I felt like I rode that stagecoach, and stepped off in another century, hot dusty, dirty and sore from all the bumps and lumps.

plot twists!

First time reader of Samantha Jillian Bayarr and this book has turned me into a fan. Maddie is an amazing strong woman looking to change her life. She sees an ad at the general store for free silver mine shares for women and saves up to go. When she arrives to get the free shares there is a catch, she must marry one of the miners to get the shares! So upset that she didn't read the fine print she reluctantly signs the paper to go ahead and marry a suitor at a meet and greet pinic. She has no money to return home let alone room and board The other women have wrote letters to their prosepective husbands and it is a binding contract. Then she passes the most amazing Christian man she has ever laid on eyes on problem is , Maddie finds out he is to wed another woman! Will Maddie get her good man or will she be married off to another miner? This is book is a page turner. It is a short and fast read and the characters are very likeable. They are witty and fun. This plots twists and turns. You will fall in love!!

About the Author

At the age of seventeen, Heath’s life was dramatically transformed by an encounter with Jesus. Steeped in drug abuse and the occult, he came to believe in Christ for salvation. Heath’s dramatic salvation experience has led him to serve in multiple leadership roles with global influence. He is intrinsically involved with the World Evangelical Alliance Youth Commission and chairs Empowered 21’s Next Generation Network, in addition to serving as a national leader for a ministry serving more than half a million students.

He holds an MA in leadership from Evangel University and is a PhD candidate in religious studies at Chester University. Heath and his wife, Ali, and two daughters currently reside in Springfield, Missouri. Together they endeavor to leave a legacy for generations to come.

Incredible

I would recommend this book to absolutely everyone. If you're looking for an authentic relationship with Christ and you're wondering how to truly live and walk out this thing called Christianity, check out this book. Heath's testimony and story are powerful and his insight into Scripture and its practical application to life today are powerful. This book is a paradigm shifter - a must read.

I'm finding it REALLY good and I'm sure I'll need to go through it ...

I'm only, say, half-way through the book. I'm finding it REALLY good and I'm sure I'll need to go through it more than once to absorb the whole message. The author is so expressive in the way he phrases things. I would recommend it to everyone who considers him/herself any kind of a Christian, and even to those who may not. Among other things, Adamson makes a big point of the difference of knowing ABOUT Jesus and truly knowing Jesus. He says that many people who attend church on a regular basis fall into the first category and maybe have read the Bible through and through and listened to many sermons, some of which may have been delivered by preachers who only know about Him. He tell us to slow down and really seek to KNOW our Lord and Savior. He keeps returning to the title saying that the bush is ALWAYS burning and that wherever we might be at any time, we are always standing on holy ground. He gives many examples and illustrations. Once again, I say excellent!

Sweet and Sincere

Sweet and sincere character driven Christian romance with just the right amount of comedy of errors and requisite tension to keep the pages turning until we ultimately reach the anticipated reunion between the main characters, Paige and Jackson. Nicely paced and plotted. Maddrey has found a formula that works - without being formulaic in her story-telling. (And formula isn't a bad word - we expect a romance to turn out a certain way, don't we? It's the fresh characters, interactions, and unique journeys that make a story interesting and compelling, which is what the author has provided in this novel.)

Written in alternating POV/chapters, we get to know Paige and Jackson (and their friends) as they navigate the choppy waters of life, romance, and Christian decision making. Set in the same world as her other novels, this first book in a new trilogy also touches on modern day topics such as the Christian's role in politics and our response to environmental issues. Never heavy-handed, Maddrey simply weaves important themes into her stories and leaves it up to the reader to come to their own conclusions and convictions about them. In other words, the author is not a "teachy" writer, but simply creates a setting and introduces a cast of characters that you want to sit down with and naturally talk to about life. Though I received this ebook for free, I look forward to buying Book 2, "A Pinch of Promise."

I loved this book and will definitely read more books by Elizabeth Maddrey. I loved reading about sustainability and people having small gardens in suburban areas. We are getting ready to move near Alexandria this weekend from country living. Paige's father wants her to take over his restaurant after going to Culinary school, but she starts a catering business with local and organically grown food. Even the milk is from cows that aren't given hormones to produce. She has no interest in politics, but she wins the bid for a Senators fundraiser. That's how she meets, the senators aide, Mr. Jackson who thinks a good meal is fast food. Sparks fly between them from the beginning. This meal, for the Senator, could jumpstart her business, until the Senator comes under fire for misappropriation of funds. Will two people, with so many differences, be able to have a Godly relationship amidst the problems that arise??

Food, passion and politics blend dramatically to create A Splash of Substance

A Splash of Substance is the cleverly written, oh-so-creative story of Paige Jackson and Jackson Trent who share similar names but at first meeting they think that is the only thing they have in common.

Owner of a catering company based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, Paige has a palate for properly done beef tongue and a strong distaste for politics. She believes in buying local food that is sustainable and no part of an animal is wasted on the plates she serves.

Trent works for as U.S. Senator whose office is on Capitol Hill. He is an advocate for applying your personal belief to the shaping of national policy. He speaks his mind and sometimes puts his foot in his mouth (so to speak). Trent’s passion for politics is no match for Paige’s love for serving sustainable food.

However, Paige’s business is struggling. So she bids on a contract to cater the Senator’s next fundraiser, an event she hopes will result in her acquiring more high-end, high-paying clients which is exactly what she needs to help her business not only survive, but thrive.

Oh but what’s a political story without scandal? Maddrey rocks the imaginary world of her characters with breaking news of a scandal that threatens Paige’s career and the growing affection she has for Trent.

The climax of the story may make the reader question if there will be happy ending to this story for all the characters, not just Paige and Trent. The only way to find out is to buy Maddrey’s book and read it.

Once you pick up the book and read the first page, you will continue to the end in one sitting. So set aside a good four hours to enjoy this clever story world created by Maddrey.

Like any skilled storyteller, author Elizabeth Maddrey keeps readers guessing from the rocky first meeting of Paige and Trent, to the very sweet yet unpredictable ending.

Hope for the Weary Mom: Let God Meet You in the Mess, written by Stacey Thacker and Brooke McGlothlin, is an honest look at motherhood and the weary moments that can surround us as moms on this journey. Brooke and Stacey are honest and vulnerable about their own struggles and moments of frustration as moms, yet always bring readers back around to the hope that we have because of the Lord Jesus.

This book was such an encouragement to me. Life and motherhood can seem so weary and tedious some days. The perspective of it being a marathon, and not a sprint, encouraged me to keep looking at the big picture and not simply what I see today. Furthermore, the challenge of turning weariness to worship reminded me of His beautiful grace that covers everything. All we have to do is keep surrendering ourselves, and our kids, to Him. He will give us His wisdom, guidance, and direction for each day of the journey.

perfect for mothers who believe

If you're a mother who is honest enough to say that motherhood is not easy but the most rewarding job you could ever have, honest enough to say that you could use words of wisdom from mothers who are in your same place, honest enough to say that you are ready to let God help you and ready to take some healthy steps forward in understanding yourself and your role as a mother, then this book is for you. I really loved how Stacey and Brooke (Authors) were completely honest, open and real about themselves and their own roles as mothers. They are quick to claim their imperfections, their struggles and their days where they have questioned, "God, where are you?" But they have found him and God has found them in the midst of laundry, fighting kids, fatigue, and worries and he has proven time and time again that with faith, trust and hope, we can get through the hard times. There may not be perfect days, but there is a tomorrow where we can start fresh and new again, just as he did. As a mother of a 19 yr old, 6 yr old and 4 yr old, I highly recommend it. Read it slowly, meditate on it and this book will become a new best friend.

A Must Read

I first read "Hope" as a brand new mom with a newborn. Stacey & Brooke's stories and words of encouragement met me in those long nights and helped me feel less alone. I read "Hope" again this year when the toddler stage of life felt overwhelming and discouraging - and, again, Stacey & Brooke were there like two sweet friends offering a hug, a cup of coffee, and a safe place in the middle of all the chaos. This is my "must read" motherhood book for all mamas.

These articles originally appeared on my website, joshuanickel.com. They were some of the first posts when I started a blog. They're not precisely related to one another, so they can be read in any order. When I put them together to form an ebook, I had to find a common theme.
The common theme is Jesus Christ: He is great and His grace is wonderful. These five articles all say either one or both of those things. I named the ebook in a way that reflected that theme.
