I like red meat and setting things on fire

I'm a man. I carry a pocket knife. I drive a black truck. In the winter, I grow a beard. I like red meat and setting things on fire. There's nothing quite like catching a fish.

I'm a man, and I'm comfortable with both beauty and grace. I love a well-placed mason jar of daisies, and the evening sky makes me teary eyed. There's nothing like spying the tenderness of a boy with his dog or a girl with her dolls. I'm still a sucker for heart warming story.

I'm proud to be the only fella to contribute a story to Dawn Camp's new book, The Beauty of Grace. It's a beautiful work. And if you're a fella, consider buying two copies just to show the world that you ain't skeered of either beauty or grace.

Like a Room Full of Old Friends

It's difficult to sum up a book like this in just a few words simply because it's not from the mind of one writer, but nearly twenty writers. Each woman comes to the table with her own story, her own lens to see the world. What Dawn has done is create a book that is not just a lone voice to beckon the reader, but more like a room full of old friends that welcome the reader in with encouragement and love. Stories are brought together under broad headlines that help to unify the voices. I recognized many of the names, but many others I was not familiar with, but there were no weak links or sour notes. Readers are likely to not only find some writers that they already love, but discover some favorites. Highly recommended.

Collection of Wonderful Stories

If you are looking for a sweet collection of stories by a variety of authors, check out The Beauty of Grace: Stories of God’s Love from Today’s Most Popular Writers. The book is like a smorgasbord of inspirational stories, and even if you don’t like all of it, there’s something for everyone.

One of my favorite stories was “On Comparing Yourself” by Arianne Segerman, which had good commentary about comparing ourselves to others within this digital age of rampant social media. Another one of my favorites was “Peace in the Pieces” by Kelley J. Leigh; I liked the author’s descriptive writing and Scripture-based message. Throughout the book, I also enjoyed reading the Bible verses and quotes that were included at the end of the stories.

The stories are each short, so they are easy to digest quickly. Some of these stories would be good for prose interpretation contests, or if you needed to read something at a luncheon or banquet. Each story is packed with thoughtfulness and valuable insight. The book teaches important lessons about life, love, self-esteem, and truth. Ultimately, The Beauty of Grace points readers towards Jesus Christ, reminding us of the power of God’s unfailing love.

I would have given this book four stars if indeed it were a 'book' instead of a piece of a book. I detest authors who sell a piece of a book and call it a "series." Those pieces are "chapters" not a series. A real book has an ending. This book does not.

This "piece" of a book is about a woman, Cassidy Jane, who's the youngest of three daughters. Her mother's passed away and she and her older sisters live with their father. Her sisters are in their mid and late twenties which is a bit old not to be married for that time period. There's no explanation given as to why they still live at home. Cassidy's father says it's time for her to get married, but he doesn't seem to be at all concerned that her older sisters aren't married. (Cassidy Jane's 20) For some unexplained reason, Cassidy's father doesn't like the man she's interested in so he sets her up with suitors of his choice. Along the way, Cassidy believes the man she cares for is engaged to someone else. This "book" ends before Cassidy Jane ever has her first "date." The author very thoughtfully includes a sampler of the second book, entitled "Courting Cassidy Jane" so you can read a "little" more about Cassidy Jane's romance. Unfortunately, the sampler ends before there's any actual "courting." The third book in the series is "Wedding Cassidy Jane." So if you'd like to read the "whole" story please be sure and buy all three books. If the author had written a "complete" book about each of the sisters' romances, that would have been a great series. She writes well but not well enough for me to buy three books to read one complete story.

Sweet read....

In a world where there are so many books filled with sexual implications....and very explicit sexual scenes..this book was a breath of fresh air..I gave it 4 stars because it held my interest all the way through....What a sweet true to life read....Cassidy Jane was sure a strong willed girl with a pure heart and sweet demeanour...BUT...and there is always a but...I thought Doc was a character I would love to know more about..a big city Dr. coming to a small town...WHY... The story line hinted about his family issues....I would also like to read about the life of the two sisters...why they have not married yet...And why did their father never remarry..it had obviously been a long time since his wife's death...This book left me with questions I want answers to..

This book was a short but entertaining read. The author did a great job with creating characters that were memorable and likable. This is the type of book that you love reading and can't wait for the next one to come out.

Fourth in a series by Fr. Papavassiliou

Meditations for Pascha is the fourth book in a series by Fr. Vassilios Papavassiliou. The previous three were Meditations for Advent, Meditations for Great Lent, and Meditations for Holy Week. The book begins by discussing the meaning of the week which follows Pascha, also known as Bright Week or Renewal Week. There are three themes for this week - water, light, and renewal. It is in this week that we celebrate all things being made new by Christ's Resurrection. We also begin to get hints of Pentecost, despite it still being more than a month away. The rest of the book dedicates individual chapters to the weeks that follow Pascha, like Thomas Week; Week of the Myrrh-Bearing Women, Week of the Blind Man, etc.

Thomas Sunday was an interesting read. For starters, it is also known as Antipascha, not because it is in opposition to Pascha, but "instead of Pascha." On the Sunday of Pascha, in the evening, there is a Vespers service called the "Agape Vespers." In this service, the Church hears about the first post-Resurrection appearance of Jesus. If people are unable to make it to this service, then the following Sunday, known as "Thomas Sunday," they can hear about Thomas seeing the Risen Lord. Therefore, some of the Church is like Thomas in that he wasn't present when all the others first saw Jesus after his Resurrection. Little things like this are what makes the Orthodox calendar so awesome.

Another section, I particularly liked is the Week of the Paralytic. We all know this Gospel story from John. There was a man who lay at the pool of Bethesda who was paralyzed for 38 years. An angel would go down and stir the waters, and the first person who went in the water was cured. However, for 38 years, someone always went into the water before him, so he never was healed until Jesus came and healed the man Himself. Instead of focusing on the paralytic, Fr. Papavassiliou focuses on those around the man and compares them to us. We are all suffering from some sort of spiritual illness or paralysis. We may try and do good for our neighbors and help them when it's convenient for us. But what about when it comes down to us or them? Will we choose them over us? We like to think so, but unfortunately we are usually selfish and think only of ourselves.

This was another superb book of meditations by Fr. Papavassiliou. I believe there is one more book coming out in this series on the Twelve Great Feasts. After that, I believe the series will be done. I'm not sure the ins and outs of publishing and what kind of response is needed to merit a new printing of a book, but if possible, I think combining all of these Meditations books in a nice leatherette edition would be a nice idea, especially if it is the same quality as The Ancient Faith Prayer Book.

A masterpiece

I was raised a Roman Catholic as far back as I can remember. Tragedies in my life immeasurably challenged my belief in God. It was challenged to the point where I began to despise talk of religion, specifically the faith I was raised with -- Christianity. I began to consistently ask myself, "Is God real??" My "blind belief" wavered to the point where I found myself with a strong tendency to challenge religious believers, almost to the point of unconsciously trying to convince them out of their faith whenever I can. I became a man of logic and reasoning, and simply could not entertain "blind belief" in any way.
Then I read this book. It was logical and compelling, and I found myself with no sound way to refute what Josh McDowell was saying. I could criticize his thoroughness, but diving into excruciating detail onto the sciences he employed would've been criticized as redundant. It did not have the "hype" and "hoopla" of "Praise the Lord!" mentality. It was just plain scientific reasoning, logic, and common sense.
I saw the criticisms other people had of this book, and I find it hard to understand how they could castigate this book as they did. I was very steadfast in my resentment towards Christianity, but I was influenced otherwise -- I just had to be because the logic that the author used, for me, made sense. For example, I lost a great deal of faith in Christianity when I learned how the Bible was written many years after Jesus' death, and that it was largely a result of "word of mouth". But the author points out that if the miracles of Jesus were farce, how can it withstand its persistence through all those years? If any of us decided to make some sensational claim like being able to fly without wings, and if we were to start disseminating such information, how long do you think that will last? Will it last decades so as to eventually land on a book of "facts"? The point here is that the human way of doing things has a way of weeding out untruths and inaccuracies of "news", and that the words and deeds of Jesus would not have lasted as long as it did if there were no corroborations so strong as to withstand such forces; this is true for anything, religious incidents or otherwise. For me, this was a reasonable and persuasive argument that Jesus did do what he did, or it would have been shot down way sooner, much less making it into a book.
I only have 1000 words for this review, so let me end it by saying this. I now am totally convinced that God and Jesus are REAL. It is hard to accept that at this day and age, and I've been through that phase of constant skepticism.
My biggest arsenal against Christianity was my own intellect. But this book used the very foundation I had for disbelieving to show me otherwise. How can I not respect that?

The Day I Began to Doubt I Got This Book

Throughout my life, I have been proud of being intelligent AND a Christian. But never until high school did I start hearing from non-believing peers that I MUST be blind; how can a Christian be in any way intelligent? I decided not to listen to them -- until one day during college, EVERY doubt I ever had of my faith emerged. The day the earth came down -- I ran to my Christian friends in desperate help, and the first book I came upon through recommendation was this book. Evidently, this was a Christian classic. And so I began to read, and from this experience, I learned a couple things and other points in hindsight, for viewers to know. 1) Josh McDowell has a powerful testimony. Just that made me feel a little better. However, my intellect told me I can't base my beliefs completely on other people's experiences. 2) I found out I was an extreme skeptic, and I had no idea how powerful my doubts were. I even wondered if I had EVER been a Christian. 3) This is a great introductory book into apologetics. It outlines the basics of most arguments an apologist can give. It's almost a mini-handbook, insightful and a comfort. 4) However, the very fact that I was not completely assured or fully convinced afterward says something. The book only made me want to run right to Jerusalem and start doing my own personal research; why? The book's arguments were 80% of the time decent and challenging enough to keep you encouraged you may be on the right track, but the other 20% was vague and lacking in thought of other possibilities. Yet, in hindsight, I would still recommend this to skeptics as an introductory book and helpful in your search for truth (good enough to get 3 stars from me!!), but this should not be your sole source to the evidence of Christianity. Overall, I left this book a little disappointed but also encouraged enough to go on and read more. Yes, I persevered. McDowell's book became my steam engine due to its good qualities, and so I kept on. I researched for several months over other books by McDowell ("A Ready Defense" is incredible, and "The Resurrection Factor" is thought provoking), Lee Strobel, Philip Yancey, Ravi Zacharias and even the Bible. And you know what? I'm still intelligent and a stronger Christian than I ever have been. I may have even become a TRUE Christian due to my reading and determination. Check out my wish list -- you will find out I'm not being phony here at all. I encourage you, overall, to read this as this is a great overview, then KEEP on reading. Don't give up. This book is only a good, decent foundation to today's apologetics.

This book gets life-changing RESULTS!

If you want someone to really understand why they can actually believe in the Bible and the message that it contains (the Gospel of Jesus), my experience has been that getting them to read this book is one of the best ways.
While in the US Air Force, I was stationed on Guam, where a friend of mine had a copy of this book, which he had borrowed from a friend. He explained a little about it and told me he really enjoyed reading it. He said that his own faith was greatly increased. I thought that sounded pretty good, so I asked him to let me borrow it. I did, it was awesome, my own faith grew tremendously,and I couldn't help but to tell another friend of mine all about it. So, this next friend borrowed it, he thought it was great, it made a great impression on him (he was a newborn Christian, at the time, and 12 years later he still has a very close walk with the Lord), and then a friend of his borrowed it! So, finally we had to get the book passed back up the food chain, from friend to friend to friend to friend to friend, just to get it back into the hands of the original owner (I can only assume that he hadn't borrowed it, too). That was around 1989 or 1990.
12 years later, I was thinking about how great of an impact that little paperback book had on me and was telling my wife how grateful I was to have ever come across it. She decided to buy 18 copies of it for me, for Christmas. So I gave copies to some family members and friends from work.
A recent incident was a few months ago. One night as I was leaving work, I decided to give a copy to a guy who is a supervisor (not mine), but because the lights were being turned out and everyone was expected to leave for the night, I didn't have time to write a note to him explaining where the book came from and why (like I wanted to), so I just left it on his desk. The next day he was sent to a different floor of the building, so I didn't see him again until 3 weeks later, when I was also moved to the same floor. When we first saw each other, I had forgotten all about giving him the book. I noticed that he was far more chipper than in the past and he had a plastic Jesus on top of his computer monitor. Here was a guy who, not too long before, I'd seen wearing a Metallica t-shirt and sometimes could get edgy over seemingly trivial things. A couple of minutes later, I remembered leaving that book and went and told him that I was the one who left it and explained how I didn't have time to leave a note. At first his eyes got big, which made me think for a second that he was angry with me; but then his face really lit up with happiness and surpise (that it was me). He said, "That was the best little book I have ever read in my life!" He couldn't stop thanking me and said that his whole life has changed and that book had a lot to do with it. Since the last time I had seen him, he had been baptized and even married! He said that he now attends church services 3 times a week, too. He thought for sure that either his wife or one of her friends had left it for him to find. But, of course, she insisted that she did NOT! So, finally the mystery was solved for him. Now, I can't wait to buy some more to give away, as I believe the Lord leads me to do so. I already have a few more people in mind that I think would really like it and benefit from it.
The book is easy to read and understand, not too long, and just gets right to the point. The point being that Jesus claimed to be More than a carpenter. He dogmatically claimed to be God. Either he was lying, was delusional, or else he was telling the truth. Only one of those 3 options allows for one to say that he was a great teacher. So, if someone wants to say that they don't believe that Jesus is God, then they should not also say that he was great teacher (as a lot of people do).
It's explained that the odds of one person fulfilling all of the Old Testament prophecies regarding the Messiah to come, as Jesus did, is so mathematically improbable, that it is obvious that Jesus IS who he said that he is (It would require a whole lot MORE faith, and of the BLIND variety, to believe other-wise, after learning this). McDowell has a mathematician to give an example of what the odds are of one person fulfulling them all. The example given is something like, if you filled the entire state of Texas with coins 8 feet deep and only 1 had a special mark, Jesus would have had to have picked that 1, on the 1st try.
I think this book is kind of like NIKE shoes. JUST READ IT! :-)

About the Author
Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was ordained as a priest in 1969, became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998. He was elected pope by the College of Cardinals following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on March 13, 2013.

Beautiul Wisdom

With so much hubub centered around the comments the Holy Father wrote about “trickle-down” economics in Evangelii Gaudium, the entire population, including Catholics, have ignored some excellent points from the exhortation. In Section II, Pope Francis explains that, “Every authentic experience of truth and goodness seeks by its very nature to grow within us, and any person who has experienced a profound liberation becomes more sensitive to the needs of others.” This is a beautiful truth that can be shared across the religious spectrum and is no doubt why this pope in particular is gaining so many admirers from the non-Catholic Christians brethren and even the non-religious.

He’s funny also. In the same section, he says, “...an evangelizer must never look like someone who has just come back from a funeral!” Later he acknowledges the proclivity of some pastors to ramble on in less-than-inspirational homilies: “We know that the faithful attach great importance to it, and that both they and their ordained ministers suffer because of homilies: the laity from having to listen to them and the clergy from having to preach them!”

There’s no escaping the controversial section on economics, however, and I cannot see it any other way than the Pope criticizing the free market. Of course, he’s right when he says that the free-market alone doesn’t lead to a holy society, but I don’t think anyone is claiming that. What the free market does exponentially better than the alternative statist, socialist, or centralized economies is distribute wealth in the most effective and efficient way possible and has brought more people out of poverty than any other institution on Earth, including the Church.

In Evangelii Gaudium, the Holy Father offers readers a wonderful exhortation from which anyone, Catholic or otherwise, can garner wisdom. Despite the glaring flaw in his economic terminology, this is an excellent read.

Five stars for 'Joy of the Gospel'

A clear, joyous statement of what our world can be if we truly follow the words of Christ. Popes have said many of these things before, but I think people are paying attention to Francis for two reasons: 1) He "practices what he preaches," e.g., visits the homeless, embraces a seriously disfigured man, and washes the feet of prisoners (not other Cardinals) on Holy Thursday. 2) He is a good communicator, who writes in accessible, understandable, and friendly language. And he writes for all Christians--not just Catholics. Actually, he writes for all people. I especially wish our policymakers and politicians would read this.

About the Author

Shane W. Houle, DMin, has been active in Christian ministry for over twenty-five years. Through his preaching he’s come to understand the power of brevity, particularly when dealing with distracted young people. He’s pleased to share the aphorisms he’s compiled over the years in his first book, Uncommon Wisdom.

Dr. Houle has been happily married to his wife, Julene, for more than twenty-five years, and they have two grown children. The family makes their home in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

This book is an excellent collection of wise thoughts. Any person who could apply even 1% of these aphorisms would markedly improve their life. I for one will look forward to reminding myself of these aphorisms over and over. Highly recommended!

Beautifully written

This is such an amazing book! It tells of a young girl and her struggle with life! There are many people than can relate to this book and the best and wonderful part is that this book reminds us of how wonderful our Lord and savior Jesus Christ is, it reminds us that no matter what we have done, that there is a God, a good, merciful, and loving God that will take care of us, forgive us and welcome us with open arms! Thank you Jesus for allowing Sis Myrie to bless us with this novel!! It was truly a delight and a great read!! I'm so ready for the next book!!!

Awesome Read!!!!

OMG...this was one of the best reads ever!!! I'm not much of a reader, but this book truly kept me intrigued. This is definitely a great book for anyone working youth/young adult ministries. It portrays real life events, and ties them in with biblical based solutions. This author did an awesome job with this book and I am anxiously awaiting book #2....Getting Over Kyle! If you purchase this book, you will NOT regret it!!!

This book is awesome!!!! The story captivates the reader. Once you start reading, you don't want to put it down until you're finished. I was saddened upon completion of the book because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I can't wait until part 2 of this book is released. The author is very talented. Love this book! August 12, 2013 By Tammy Burch Format:Paperback I love this book! I wasn't sure what I was in for when I started, but once I started reading, I was hooked! The author takes you on a ride in the future right to the past. The time travel is seamless and very easy to follow. The characters bloom more and more with each page! I loved how easy it was to fully engage in the character's lives and feel for them. Can't wait to get my hands on book 2!

A fantasy of what romance should be, it's all good.

I don't read romances very often, but I do like historical fiction. I also like action/adventure and mystery. But this book was definitely a page-turner, I'm glad I purchased it.
The last fiction book that I read was "Gone Girl" which was a fun read but it was so dysfunctional that it made me feel depressed at the end. Another book that I read with a historical fiction and time travel element was "Outlander" which was also a fun read, but had a lot of stressful or negative elements in it.
So, it was good for me at this time in my life to pick up "Shenandoah Nights." The reason is that I have been under a lot of stress lately and sometimes it really helps to read something positive. Also, the protagonist is a Christian and it is really, really rare to have a Christian portrayed as the heroine in a story. That was really refreshing to read. If you read fiction frequently, you will often find Christians (or a group of aliens that represents conservative type people) portrayed in a very negative light. You won't find this attitude in this book.
If you are not a Christian, you will not find the Christian elements to be intrusive. The heroine prays, and values the good character of her men. She also blushes! That is about it, you will not hear any preaching in this book.
This book is very positive, very engrossing, and it ends well. The romance is emotionally intense and not graphic. It is perfect for teens and perfect for those of us who have enough darkness and distress in our daily lives (and on the evening news) that we are ready for a break. Enjoy!

Shenandoah Nights is a tightly written time travel tale

People read books for different reasons. If you are looking for a sweet time travel tale that gives you plenty of history, then this your book. If you are looking for a book about the transforming power of love, then this is your book too. If you want a family base of loving folks with strong values, then this is your book too. It is an entertaining read that not only reveals the people from the past, but also the intriguing past of the tall ships.

Now, I like books that are written, edited and formatted well. Shenandoah Nights meets this standard too.

A Time-traveling Romance

Here is a lighthearted romance with a lot of imagination and even some history worked into the contemporary story. Rebecca O'Neill is talked into being the teacher chaperone on a field trip for the class that will start sixth grade in just a week. This field trip is aboard the Shenandoah, a reconstruction of its name sake that was a schooner used in the American Revolutionary war. In the rebuilding of the ship, Captain Roberts makes sure they use every piece of the original ship that was salvageable. They painstakingly numbered each board as they removed it so when they built the new ship they could put the old boards in the exact location they were originally in. Which creates one cabin made completely of the original materials. This cabin becomes the transport to the past, in 1776.

I loved the movies The Love Letter and Somewhere In Time that involve time travel and falling in love with a person in the past. Then there is the conundrum, can the person from the present, or future depending how you look at it, go to the past and stay in order to be with their true love. This novel falls under that same category. Lisa does a great job of bringing out the chemistry between Rebecca and Captain Reed.

It is fun to imagine such things. The story takes you from present day, to over 200 years ago and back. As a sixth grade teacher, and still in her twenties, some of Rebecca's thoughts seem a little too "young" for me. I wasn't sure if this book was written for young adults or adult women. Lisa has assured me it is for women, although there have been quite a few teenage girls who have read it and contacted her or left a review. Even one sixty-year-old man who read it after his wife did and enjoyed it.

The book was very hard to put down once the romance was established. The last half of the book didn't seem near as geared to such a young audience as I first questioned. It is a fun read, and if you are looking for a short, light hearted romance novel, you will most likely enjoy it, as I did.
