About the Author
Richard Leonard, SJ, is a Jesuit of the Australian Province. He is the director of the Australian Catholic Film Office, a consultant to the Australian Catholic Bishops' Media Committee, and a film critic for all the major Catholic newspapers of Australia. A holder of a doctorate in cinema studies, he has lectured all over the world. He writes on Catholic approaches to film and is the author of Preaching to the Converted (2006), Where the Hell Is God? (2010), and Why Bother Praying? (2013). He currently lives in Sydney, Australia.

Another EXTRAORDINARILY IMPORTANT BOOK by Fr. Richard Leonard, SJ

Before reading this book, I had read Fr. Leonard's best sellers "Where the Hell Is G0d?" (2010) and "Why Bother Praying?" (2013). I considered these books to be two of the best I'd ever read. This book makes it three.
After a hilarious yet informative Preface about his experiences in traveling by air as a priest, Fr. Leonard quickly gets down to vitally important matters PRESENTED IN EVERYDAY LANGUAGE, not aimed just at the intelligentsia or academics well versed in the subjects, but to every single Christian and perhaps those of other faiths.
Being a scientist (nuclear physicist), I found Chapter 1 (of 3) particularly intriguing as Fr. Leonard includes a review of the disparate worldviews of pure scientism (truth through science alone) and pure fideism (truth by faith alone), as opposed to the total truth as now known to us, post- Renaissance, which is not a dichotomy but rather a non-competitive, complementary mixture of both - the "how" and the "why", respectively. Many esteemed scientists, theologians and philosophers have written scholarly tomes about the importance of the latter viewpoint, which today is the subject of the formal discipline Science and Religion; but few if any have presented this subject in a manner so accessible to everyone, comprehensive and yet so clear and concise, as is to be found here.
In large measure, Chapter 1 is devoted to Father's brilliant, in-depth description of the underpinnings of atheism vs. belief in God.
In Chapter 2 Fr. Leonard presents and addresses contemporary, thought provoking questions presented to him about reasons for and against religious faith which he has compiled from those of both believers and nonbelievers, with emphasis on those from young adults. His answers are fascinating, non-apologetic, and in several instances surprising. All I can do here is is give a glimpse of this highly rewarding material by indicating a dozen of these questions: Isn't religion the cause of most wars? Does the Qur'an insist on violent aggression? How do we maintain our faith when clergy have abused children sexually and then church leaders have covered up their actions? Is the Bible true-how can people base their belief on a book filled with contradictions, incorrect science, and time-bound customs? Is there any evidence that Jesus actually lived, and even if He did, isn't his story just a religious version of the Superman Story? How could a good and loving God need or want Jesus to suffer and die on Good Friday? Because of Jesus's life, death, and resurrection, Christians believe that eternal life is opened to humanity-therefore, how can anyone believe in a loving God who can also damn people to hell-hasn't this theology just been about religions maintaining their social control over adherents? How can we believe in a God whose followers won't have women as leaders? Given that Jesus was a simple man who advocated for the poor, isn't the Church's wealth and power a major stumbling block to belief? Why follow any religion's moral code-why not simply follow your own moral code? If Christians have to believe in their fairy tales, can they just do so privately and stay out of politics and law? The worst aspect of religion is moralizing-how can such outdated thinking offer anything to modern society?
In discussing all of these, FATHER TELLS IT LIKE IT IS, warts and all.
Chapter 3 is devoted to the lives of Christians who inspire us. As this Amazon review is already growing far too lengthy, I won't even list their names. Suffice it to say that Father brings new insights (warts included) into the lives of people who, as he says, "walk the talk".
Finally, I would dare to add to Fr. Leonard's discussion re. science vis-à-vis religion my own observation that, in the "how" of science and the "why" of religion, it is important that the leaders of each of these inquiries be very careful about sticking to what they know. On the religious "side", there are many examples of invalid trespassing ranging from the saga of Galileo to today's sadly misinformed attempt of Pope Francis to reduce atmospheric CO2, which has little if any effect on global warming (there has been none for the past 18 years, despite alarmist predictions by radical environmentalists which have now been disproved experimentally). CO2 helps vs. harms the pope's beloved poor by its large positive effect on agriculture and, via fossil fuel plants, by providing the cheapest way to fulfill their immediate and essential energy needs. (I contacted the U.S. Papal Nuncio and the Vatican's Pontifical Academy about this.) Other examples of papal errors can of course be found outside the physical sciences; e.g., one mentioned by Fr. Leonard is Pope Nicholas V's decree that Catholic nations had the right to enslave non-Christians. On the science "side" there are equally numerous examples from d'Holbach (1791) to Richard Dawkins (present) in aggressively attacking religion for incoherent reasons. Whenever attempts have been made to revert to the old paradigms of fideism or scientism they have failed conspicuously. It is important to realize (1) that two fundamentally different questions are being addressed, as Father points out, (2) that authorities in one area have no preordained competence in the other, and (3) that the sum of knowledge from both is obviously greater than is possible to achieve from attempts at mutual denigration. The goal of Science and Religion is to promote a healthy dialogue that will enrich and expand our understanding of what we are doing on Earth, for Christ's sake.

More wisdom for today's readers from Fr Richard Leonard SJ

Australian Jesuit Richard Leonard begins his new book by providing a point-by-point guide to the perils of revealing one is a Catholic priest to inquisitive fellow travellers on long-haul plane flights. It concludes with the surreal case of a 30-year-old American man, Thomas, who, on learning that he is seated with a Jesuit priest, asked Fr Richard if he knew of the books "Where the Hell is God?" and "Why Bother Praying?", which Thomas had recently read. Fr Richard had to produce his business card to convince this doubting Thomas that he was indeed the books’ very author!
As is often the case in Fr Richard’s writing, the whole account is presented with levity, but does have a serious purpose. Thomas is a highly educated man, and a very dedicated humanitarian in his work. During the course of the flight, the two men discussed matters of belief and the Church at length, and Thomas confided to the author-priest the burden of having his contemporaries constantly not understanding his embrace of religious faith, even in some cases seeing such belief as bad.
Fr Richard has produced "What Are We Doing on Earth for Christ’s Sake?" in response to the circumstances of Catholics such as Thomas. Why have religious belief? And is having such belief as ignorant – or even evil – as some vocal atheists now claim?
In the first section of the book, Fr Richard addresses the core issues of belief and unbelief in our time. The analysis he provides challenges the common arguments of today’s prominent atheist thinkers: not all religious are the same, indeed, not all Christians are the same in their beliefs and practices; religion and science are not incompatible, as each realm has its own complementary purpose.
After his encounter with Thomas, Fr Richard asked thirty of his young adult friends – believers and nonbelievers alike – to tell him what questions they most often receive, or have themselves, about the reasons for and against religious faith. The central section of his book is a collation of these questions and his concise but incisive responses. Is religious belief really the source of most wars? Did Jesus really exist, and even if he did aren’t the stories of him like superhero myths? How can we maintain our faith in the wake of the clergy sexual abuse scandals? Shouldn’t Christians just hold their beliefs privately – why should they think they have a role in politics and law?
Several times Fr Richard reminds us that it is our lives that can best give convincing testimony to the value of Christian faith. In the final section he presents his own perspectives on a number of saints – canonised or not – who were “witnesses to faith, hope and love”. They range from St Ignatius of Loyola and St Mary MacKillop to Dorothy Day and Blessed Oscar Romero, along with individuals the author has himself encountered, including in his own family.
This is a strongly but engagingly argued case for the continued relevance of Christian faith and practice in our time, while also challenging the reader to more wholeheartedly embody their faith in how they live.
