Short but worth it.

Reading the Book of Ruth was transformational in helping me 43 years ago as young single new convert to devote myself to Christ the way Ruth did to Naomi and trust his ability to provide a husband for me (if his will) without me searching for one. For me, Naomi was a type of Christ and I, Ruth. I loved the way God spoke into the author's life and circumstances so uniquely and differently from my experience from a completely different perspective and purpose. Once I adjusted to the author's British expressions and colloquialisms, I was off and running. The title of chapter one is pure gold: Stomping back to the promised land. I appreciated the author's inside down to earth view of the attitude of coming back to God. I look forward to sharing her concepts and application of Ruth with others from this perspective of returning to God empty as well my earlier experience of being encouraged to devote and entrust myself whole heartedly to Jesus. Both perspectives end up in the same place of God's story, His love and His provision. It is short (55 pages) but worth the purchase and helpful perspective. Thank you!

I wasn’t expecting something that I could so easily identify with

Tanya writes about her experiences with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) while pulling inspiration from the book of Ruth. I wasn’t expecting something that I could so easily identify with. I appreciate Tanya’s honesty. She expresses many of the same thoughts, fears, and insecurities that I’ve had. It’s nice to read something that was written by someone who “gets it”. Chronic and invisible illnesses are hard for most people to understand and there isn’t much out there that addresses us on a spiritual level. This book is useful for those of us who are dealing with life challenges (especially health challenges), but it’s also beneficial for anyone who wants to better understand the spiritual challenges we deal with.

GET THIS BOOK!

Last night after having a completely ridiculous pity party, I needed a distraction and suddenly remembered I had this book still unread. So, I spent the next few hours reading, crying, and praying and now I'm advertising to everyone I know:

GET THIS BOOK!

It tells a bit of Tanya's story as well as walks you through the book of Ruth in the Bible. Of course there was at least a line or two, per page, that, at times, felt like God's loving embrace and, at other times, felt like God lovingly smacking me upside the back of the head (in those moments, God starts to resemble Jethro Gibbs from NCIS) but it was a night very well spent. The hardest smack was a line that was almost word for word pertaining to my earlier pity party... God has definitely blessed Tanya with the gift of writing.

About the Author
Dr. Wilma Ann Bailey is the Minnie Vautrin Professor of Christian Witness and professor of Hebrew and Aramaic Scripture, Emerita, at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana. Bailey earned her PhD from Vanderbilt University. Her scholarly publications and popular publications have usually focused on issues of peace, justice, women, and ecology.



Dr. Christina Bucher is professor of biblical studies at Elizabethtown College, where she has served as chair of the department of religious studies and as dean of the faculty. Bucher earned her PhD from Claremont Graduate University. She is the author of several books and journal articles and serves on the editorial council of this commentary series.

Worth a read!

A very interesting short story that recounts how men, women, children and elderly were submitted to the horrifying torments of the barbaric Ottoman armies and how George refused to renounce his love and faith to God.

I love how Demetra describes the incidents and the characters in the story, it's pretty descriptive and is definitely worth reading.

And if you're like me that appreciate short stories like this, then you'll never regret having this one.

Great detail and history.

I was pretty excited to hear of another author writing on this topic. I was thrilled to read it too. Great detail and history. I particularly loved hearing how one is known as a saint today. They surely suffered terribly but they knew where they were going. Gotta read this because it is happening today. The author did her research and did a wonderful job.

A Masterful Treatise On The Great Evil Of Sin

The Evil of Evils addresses a great need and exposes a great weakness of those who are followers of Christ in our day. The theme of the book is that there is infinitely more evil in the least sin than there is in the greatest affliction. The renowned Puritan preacher Jeremiah Burroughs shows in great detail the fact that there is no good in sin at all and that,though affliction is not desirable in itself,God uses it in the lives of His people to accomplish much good. Rarely do modern authors even begin to approach the depth and breadth that the Puritan's reached in exposing sin for the immense evil that it is. This is due in part to the strong opposition to such preaching and teaching that will often be encountered. On p.28 Burroughs makes this comment about how evil sin is "Sin is so opposite to God that, if it were possible that the least drop of it could get into God's nature,God would instantly cease to be God." Sin is so opposed to the nature and the very existence of God that it would destroy Him if it had the power to do so. Mr. Burroughs then seeks to show how sin is opposite to man's good. The truth set forth in 'The Evil Of Evils' is so much needed in our day because it is to be feared that many in our day are much more fearful of the least aflliction and have very little fear of the greatest sin. If the believer is to bring every thought captive to the obedience of the Lord Jesus Christ then sin must be exposed for the great evil that it is,and affliction should be viewed as an instument that God uses to conform His people to the image of His Son. The Word of God exhorts the people of God to count it all joy in the midst of trials but never is this to be their attitude toward sin. This book will help the Christian reader to have and maintain a godly perspective with regard to sin and affliction.

Simply the Most Forceful Theological Exposition on Sin

It is mind-boggling that Jeremiah Burroughs wrote and preached at least twenty interconnected sermons about sin, whose manuscripts were bundled into a 345-page book entitled "The Evil of Evils." Puritan ministers have this habit, that is, to handle a particular passage of Scriptures with such a level of depth and meticulousness, and with such soul-piercing applications that few or none even come close.

After briefly elaborating on the thesis of the book being "there is a greater evil in the least sin than in the greatest affliction" taken from Job 36:21, Burroughs gives nine excellent corollaries (p.18-23); nine intensely practical corollaries, specifically the last one. I wouldn't write them down here so I won't overwhelm the readers with excessive content of the book, but would invite them to read for themselves. The next interesting part is where an allusion that the reason there seems to be much evil in afflictions is precisely because there is much sin in them, while it is not strictly true that all afflictions are the result of sins as we consider two examples of Adam and Job in the Old Testament. This argument is covered in the third section under the heading of sin being opposite to all good (p.180-191), after an excellent treatment on the depth of the loathsomeness and the dreadfulness of sin in relation to God and to human beings. Here Burroughs argues sin as being the strength of all evils, the sting of affliction, the curse, the shame and the eternality of all evil, where though he uses the word "evil," these statements are applicable as well when the word "evil" is replaced by "affliction." This is worth mulling over. The reason why there is so much power in the intensity, so much sting, curse, shame and eternality in affliction is because there is sin in it.

Another thought-provoking, conscience-awakening, and soul-stinging section is when he talks about one who "may be in a most miserable condition, though he is delivered from outward affliction" under which he proposes two cases; "if a man is prosperous by sin," and "when one becomes more sinful by their prosperity" (p.257-271). These should properly fall under the application section though Burrough does not divide the treatise this way. Yet another section that I am most stunned and stung with is the last one where he examines six possible cases: (1) those who are more afraid of affliction than sin, (2) those who are careful to keep themselves from sin, but merely for fear of affliction, (3) those who will sin to avoid affliction, (4) those who, when they are under affliction, are more sensible of the strength of affliction than of sin, (5) those who get out of affliction by sinful courses, and yet think they are doing well, and (6) those, who after being delivered from affliction, can bless themselves in their sin (p.330-344).

"The Evil of Evils" is a dangerous read but on the other hand, a most necessary read. It is not a comfortable read, though it's not all gloom and doom as Burroughs did not forget to offer the gospel and other compassionate pastoral counsels (see p.272-273, 302-306, 307-309). In closing, he charges the readers as follows in regard to all he has "said of the evil of sin,"

"... know that every one of you here, at that great Audit Day (he was referring to the judgment day), must be brought to answer for what you have heard, and how you have heard, and for what effect it has had on you all. Consider what has been said, and the Lord give you understanding in all things" (p.345).

Why Sin is to be Feared, Avoided, and Hated Even More Than Affliction

Most people will do all they can to avoid affliction, but do very little to avoid sin. The one recurring theme of this book: it is better to choose affliction than sin. As Burroughs expounds godly wisdom from Scripture, he shows us why nothing is to be more feared than sin, nothing is to be more avoided than sin, and nothing is to be more hated than sin.

He effectively shows that sin is the greatest "evil of evils" by exposing the nature of sin: how it is so opposite to God, wrongs and offends God, most opposite to man's good (and more opposite to man's good than affliction is), takes away excellencies in all things, of the same nature as the devil, a furtherance of the devil's work, fullfills the devil's will, makes man conformable to the devil, etc. Along with pungent analogies, Burroughs opens our eyes to see the ugly heinous nature of sin and exposes sin for what it truly is, so that we may once again have a dread of sin, a hatred for sin, and a love for holiness.

a beautifully enchanting Christmas story

Have you ever come across a story that was so surprisingly unique and intensely meaningful that you just couldn’t help getting lost within its pages? I am here to tell you that Christmas Stray is one of those stories. Not only did I lose myself completely to this beautiful journey, but I found that when it ended, I felt like a part of me was left behind never to return. The only way that I can aptly describe this book is that it felt like pure magic mixed with love and sprinkled with a bit of luck.

Juliette has lost her direction and meaning in life. Her heart died the same day as her son, and she doesn’t know how to revive it. She has tried to find herself in anything that brings her a little bit of joy, but no matter how hard she tries the once bright spark fizzles out way to quickly. Even her loving and supportive husband Gabe has finally reached the end of his own rope after dealing with this for three very long years. In a last ditch attempt to salvage what they have together, Gabe whisks Juliette away to a very romantic and cozy holiday retreat. Are they both willing to fight for the love that still tightly binds them together, or will they find that even with their dazzling chemistry, their bond is far too bruised and broken to be mended?

This story took me by surprise and led me down a very unexpected path that left me heartbroken and speechless. At their darkest hour, I found myself so invested that tears were running down my face before I realized that I was crying. While this is a solemn story, it is also a story full of opportunities for hope and a promise for a better future. Nothing is impossible if we want it bad enough and fight for it hard enough. Hope and love can transform even the most bleak outlook into one of a beautiful masterpiece. The variety and intricacies found in Rachelle Ayala’s books continues to astound me. A heartwarming story that will bring a smile to your face.

Gabe and Juliette's marriage is rocky after the untimely death of their young son, Jeremiah. Trying to save their marriage, they go to a remote cabin to spend Christmas and hope to rekindle their love for one another. Juliette, however does not want to celebrate Christmas or have anything to do with the holiday as Jeremiah had passed away the day before Christmas the prior year. Losing all hope in her marriage and missing Jeremiah terribly, two unlikely characters show up on a cold snowy day and show Juliette that there is hope in her life without Jeremiah, and even though he is gone from her life, he will always be in her heart.

So, I admit it. I totally judge a book by its cover, so when I came across the book Christmas Stray, I could not resist. I had to read this story. I mean look at that cover. How can anyone resist those cute puppy eyes? I know I couldn't! But what about the story inside that cover? Did it stack up and meet my high expectations? Yep. Indeed it did. Matter of fact, this story exceeded my expectations. This is a heart-warming story that will tug the strings of even the coldest heart and bring a smile upon your face throughout. The whole story flowed so smoothly and was extremely well-written. I fell in love with Patrick and Puppy and the outcome was wonderful. This was a really fast read but was one that I wanted to go on forever just because it was so inspiring. Even though it is a holiday romance, it is one that can be appreciated and enjoyed anytime throughout the year.

Great story!

Juliette and Gabe's marriage is on the rocks, and this trip is their last-ditch effort to save it. They didn't expect to find a little boy in a snowstorm, but Patrick and his dog enter their lives and help Juliette remember that life can be good, despite her grief.

I really liked these characters. Of course, Puppy and Patrick are little darlings and I just want to squeeze them! Gabe is a good man who is trying to be a great husband - I think he is just at his wit's end, not knowing how to help his wife who refuses to live in the present and is always looking back.

Juliette is a complex case. She has so much she needs to learn throughout the course of the story, and the growth in her was good to see. Everything isn't smooth sailing for this couple, but the author does an excellent job of making it feel real and getting me to hope this couple works things out.

I was surprised by the slight paranormal aspects of the story, but it was a nice change from what I normally read. All in all, a great Christmas story about the power of love and making yourself see the miracles all around you.

The Holy Spirit is Awesome!

This is an excellent book on the topic. It's refreshing when you're not looking for a devil behind every bush but are living your life free from the devil. This book is an easy read and I read it in one sitting. I highly recommend this book to Christians who do not understand the gifts of the Spirit and also to those Christians who have not been baptised in the Holy Spirit ( which is separate from salvation). An unbeliever has no use for this book. You must be born again to understand it.

About the Author
George Berkeley (1685 - 1753) was an Anglo - Irish clergyman and philosopher after whom the University of California, Berkley, as well as the city, are named. Ideal Idealism

This is not the place for a philosophical analysis of Berkeley's original text, and its content of argument. The review concerns the specific book edited by Dancy, and its worth in respect of its further contribution to understanding the Treatise.
This book is to be strongly recommended as it provides a multitude of resources that contextualise, criticise, and clarify, the positions put forward by Berkeley in this work.
The most substantial contribution is the extensive introduction comprised of 15 punchy sections, covering Berkeley's life, his academic heritage, and analysis of his thought (both internal and external to that given in the Treatise). Dancy is fair to Berkeley in setting forth the most robust defences of his position, and marshalling critical arguments against the Berkelian stance. This is supplemented by an extremely thorough set of endnotes that are continually present in the background of the text, offering detailed guidance whenever necessary, or desired.
Additionally, the book offers a summarised concise overview of the arguments provided in the Treatise, a glossary of archaic terms(!), and a very helpful short section entitled "How to use this book" (why don't more books include this sort of thing?). There is also a manageable annotated bibliography of further reading to trail a path for academic expansion.
Overall, I found that this book provided a systematic treatment of the text and provided a solid structure of support surrounding the subject. Also included, the letters between Berkeley and Johnson, provide an unexpected bonus. This book is relatively cheap, considering its breadth and depth. In my opinion, it is an ideal text through which to study (and enjoy) Berkeley's Treatise.

This is a very important work of George Berkeley. On of its most interesting topics is that about the existence of matter. As, for human beings, the "existence" of something is related to its perception, there is a very close link between "things" and ideas. Both cannot have their existence completely proved. The arguments place the book among the most interesting on the top issues discussed in its time (empiricism, materialism, etc.)
