A good reference on the subject and well worth the price.

I have studied the idea of Conditional immortality for some time now. I recommend this book because the author list scripture verses and lets them speak for themselves without pushing his own personal view of hell. The book is short in length but packed with useful information to help one see what the Bible says about what happens to the unrepentant. It is a good reference on the subject and well worth the price.

The author does a great job - as another reviewer noted - of letting the Scripture speak for itself.Being that this is a potentially controversial topic, I would have liked more extrabiblical references to both modern and ancient scholars but the references provided probably offer this within their own works.

Born in Sussex England in 1948, I attended St. Catherine's College, Oxford and Surrey University. After working for British Telecom for about twenty years, in 1994 I solved my midlife crisis by moving with my wife to Greece, where I found a new career teaching English and a new spiritual home in the Orthodox Church into which we were both baptized in 2001. I live with my wife Eleni in Elounda, Crete.

To deny the Holocaust is to deny the many priests and nuns who were murdered by the nazis.

An important book for all to read. With England capitulating to the muslims to not teach the Holocaust is a harbinger of doom as America's Christians and Jews have 2 kids and muslims have 4-8 in America as in Israel. To deny the Holocaust is to also deny the murders of righteous Christians, many of whom were priests and nuns, who believed in Jesus and decency even above their own safety and lives. The Nazis even had a concentration camp called Priest Block to house the many decent priests as contrasted to the complicity of Pope "Pious" and many church's.

If we deny history then we risk its repetition. This time, the muslims will murder not only Jews but Christians as well.

An important book and contribution.

Not as good as I thought it would be

I'm a big fan of Dr. Dobson's, so I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, I was left disappointed. It seemed that there was little practical advice. Instead, there were pages upon pages of warning about how depraved our culture has become and how toxic it is to girls. It was filled with discouraging statistics. There is a place for such warnings and such statistics, but I thought that this book focused on them without providing the counterbalance--the advice of how to help our daughters grow strong and healthy, avoiding becoming one of those statistics. Despite this, there were a few gems in the book. The one that stands out the most for me was the early emphasis on the role of the father--too many fathers do not realize how important they are in their daughters' lives, right from the beginning. The early part of this book did a good job in pointing that out. After those couple of chapters, however, it was all negatives and no advice for how to avoid them. I hoped for better from Dr. Dobson.

Bringing Up Girls Review

Several years ago I read Dr. Dobson's book Bringing Up Boys. As the mother of a boy and the wife of a man who used to be a boy, I was thrilled to learn what made them tick. So, I was very excited to have the chance to review Bringing Up Girls through the Tyndale Blag Network!

Dr. Dobson, in Bringing up Girls, first relates the physiological and psychological differences between boys and girls answering the question: What makes girls unique? Everything he writes is well backed up with current research. He goes on to talk about the importance of mothers and then fathers in a girl's life. He broaches some discussion of discipline. He looks at modesty and why this is such an issue with girls today. He sites research related to our current culture and technological trends that affect girls particularly. He attempts to give parents a better understanding of why their little girls (and big girls) are the way they are are and to equip parents to raise these girls to be the young women God wants them to be.

I was very impressed with Bringing Up Girls (as I was with Bringing up Boys). I find the physiological differences between boys and girls very interesting- especially as our culture has tried for so long to tell us boys and girls really aren't all that different. I think Dr. Dobson does an excellent job of bringing in a wide array of statistical research as well as writings form other learned people on the topic. He also provides real life interviews with girls and parents to give practical examples.

Dr. Dobson is very opinionated about such issues as stay-at-home moms, abstinence, and modesty. Some readers may not appreciate this "political incorrectness", but , as I happen to agree with most of what he says, I do appreciate his candidness. I also appreciate the fact that he is willing to be counter-cultural to address some of these important truths that parents need to know.

I will definitely recommend Bringing Up Girls and plan to pass my copy on to other moms who are raising these young woman of the future.

I was very disappointed by this book. I really enjoyed "Bringing Up Boys" and found lots of insights and practical advice in it. "Bringing Up Girls", however, offered very little, if any, practical advice. I was hoping for insights on things like good vs. bad friendships, gossip, effective methods of disciplining girls, attitudes, and all I got out of the book was "make sure she has a good relationship with dad". We've already heard that from a hundred different sources.He even took it to a Freudian level, making a weird comment about dads being attracted to their developing daughters' bodies. That one point seemed to be repeated over...and over...and over...until I was ready to scream "OK! I get it, but what else should I do?!" It seems to focus entirely on the teen years and offers little help for moms of younger girls other than "encourage them to play princesses". I almost got the feeling he never met a real little girl. He seems to assume they are all sweetness and light until puberty and then they are going to cut themselves and have sex. I have a seven year old and I wanted to know how to handle bossiness and know-it-all attitudes and bad influences. Maybe the book was helpful to mothers of teens, but not to me.
I should ad here that I really like Dr. Dobson and his other books. I just can't believe he didn't have more to put in this one.

About the Author
James A. Harnish is the author of numerous books and Bible studies, including A Disciple’s Path, Strength for the Broken Places, Simple Rules for Money, and You Only Have to Die. He is an acclaimed pastor and ordained elder in The United Methodist Church who has led congregations throughout Florida, most recently Hyde Park in Tampa where he served for twenty-two years. In 2014, after forty-two years of active ministry, he retired from full-time ministry and moved to Winter Haven, Florida, where he lives with his wife, Marsha, and enjoys writing, reading, and playing with his grandchildren.

Justin LaRosa is a licensed clinical social worker and Deacon who leads the new ministry of Hyde Park United Methodist Church in downtown Tampa, Florida. He served for eight years as the Minister of Discipleship, working with a team of leaders to facilitate the process of organizing, training, empowering, and supporting laypersons. Justin is co-author with James A. Harnish of A Disciple's Path and A Disciple's Heart.

A Book Of Modest Accomplishments

If you are looking for a particularly dry book that gives fairly commonplace details about the content of every book of the Bible, arbitrarily divides the Bible into various historical periods and provides a lot of questions for students of the Bible to answer on their own (without providing those answers), this is a good place to look. To be fair, this book is a very old one, probably used as a textbook back when people read Bibles in school (it has the feel of being used as as form of Bible education in a formal classroom setting). As the work of a Texan doctor of divinity, it represents early 20th century biblical scholarship of a conservative Protestant fashion.

The first eight chapters of this book seek to provide introductory material to the Bible of a very rudimentary and straightforward fashion, giving some reasons why we believe in the Bible based on internal and external evidence, a discussion of the names of God (at least as they were known to early 20th century Protestants with a limited knowledge of Hebrew), the sacred offices, the seven covenants, the divisions of scripture, the various supposed dispensations (as the author is a clear dispensationalist), the ages and divisions of biblical history and some notable personages in the Bible. The rest of the book contains a rather uneven summary of the books of the Bible with their contents, comments about their author and theme and perspective and questions for the reader (who is presumably a student).

As might be expected to be the case, a greatly disproportionate amount of the text of this book focuses on the New Testament, with a particular spirit that always seems on the verge of, if not actually crossing over into, a spirit of antinomianism. The author's knowledge of Hebrew and biblical ways appears very limited and largely second hand. To his credit, the author does not claim any great originality of thought or expression (nor is it to be found in this work), but the lack of biblical understanding of the author does make this work of limited value for believers. Mind you, within those limits it is a book that is of modest pleasure and accomplishment, but it is very limited. However, a point in this book's favor is that it does occasionally contain within its dry outline form answers to particularly notable questions within Christianity, including a refutation of the idea that Peter was the first Prelate of Rome, doing so economically but with some skill. On other questions, like the Sabbath, the book has little of worth to offer whatsoever.

Therefore, those who read this book should be aware of its limitations, so as to not have too high expectations of the work, but also to enjoy the occasional details the book does offer that is of interest. Generally speaking, the beginning of each chapter discussing the book of the Bible is the best part, giving a biographical account of the author and a brief historical introduction to the context of the work. What follows after this are largely superficial accounts of the organization of material (some of the time, such as in Judges, not showing any awareness of the chiastic form of organization within it, and failing to do justice to its structural integrity) as well as basic questions for the reader to determine how many times certain words or expressions are used in certain texts by certain authors (for example). For those who appreciate its limits and its dry and superficial nature, this book is of some interest to contemporary students of the Bible, so long as they are content with texts and no illustrations or charts or diagrams to liven the presentation any.

This book is written as an outline of the Bible, not the Bible itself

Josiah Tidwell Blake taught scripture at Baylor University in Texas for 36 years. He was memorialized there when Tidwell Bible Building was erected on Baylor's campus. Sixty-eight limestone panels, each a ton and carved by talented craftsmen, tell the story of the Bible in a panorama encircling the Tidwell Bible Building.

I would recommend this book to any who would like a little insight into each chapter of the Bible.

Cindy Johnson is a vibrant and active single living in Orange County, California. Growing up as a pastor’s daughter, working at Christian camps, and attending Biola University have all given her great insight into the ins and outs of her audience’s culture. She works for Young Life so she is relationally connected to young single women all over Southern California and beyond. Cindy doesn't pretend to have all the answers, but provides a relatable picture of God's greater plan for our lives sprinkled with honesty & lots of laughs. While I am not a woman, I am single and a Christian. So although this book was not necessarily geared towards me I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and found that it had meaning that I could relate to the struggles I face in my own romantic relationships and my walk with Jesus. Each experience I encounter is a personal experience and one of the great realizations that came from reading this book is that while my experiences are my own everyone is going through or has gone through similar trials in their life. The individual testimonies give a great insight to what goes through our minds when we are faced with choosing to indulge our desires of the flesh or our love for Jesus. We know what's right and wrong in the eyes of the Lord but how do we apply it? In the, "heat of the moment" how do we keep our faith over come our desires? It's certainly not an easy task and I know I've fallen short on many occasions. It really helped to hear how others dealt with the situations in the moment and in the aftermath. Cindy's reflections on the stories really help to tie everything together and made me reflect on my own walk and how going forward I want to respond to situations. It's also wildly entertaining, had me laughing out loud and wanting to keep turning the pages to hear the next disaster of an experience.

Dr. Jonathan Akin is the Pastor of Fairview Church in Lebanon, TN, a suburb outside of Nashville. He is a founding member of a movement of young leaders called Baptist21. Jonathan also serves an adjunct professor at Union University and the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Jonathan has a BA from Boyce College, and he received his M.Div. and Ph.D. in Old Testament from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Jonathan is married to Ashley. Great stuff here. Enjoyed reading this book. Jonathan provides, in a short but thorough way, why Proverbs is much more than a "Christian Aesop's fables" or as he says "Dear Abby".
Although I am a layman, I appreciated the insights that will allow me to see Christ in the book of Proverbs more clearly.

Helpful and practical!

A worthwhile addition to any library. Akin shows the principles of how to preach Christ from the book of Proverbs. He stayed true to the nature of Wisdom Literature but has high Christology in his Biblical theology. I've been preaching for twelve years and this book added freshness to an upcoming sermon series from the book of Proverbs.

Good, but....

This is a very cute book and all the kids in my Sunday school class liked it. Unfortunately some of the parents were irate that I would read a book about bunnies and eggs. The message is this--When you see bunnies and eggs this easter, they represent new life and remind us of the new resurrected life we have in Christ. So...this is a warning....do not read this book to children who have legalistic parents, unless you enjoy being the target of persecution.

After graduating from the University of Florida, Jeanie Shaw went into the ministry, helping women learn to apply the Bible to real life. She has taught classes and workshops world wide on issues such as marriage, parenting, leadership, and spiritual growth. For eight years Jeanie served as a vice-president for HOPE worldwide, working particularly with orphans and the elderly in New England and Europe. Jeanie has written numerous books for adults as well as for children. She has four grown children and seven grandchildren.

“When the Chicken Hits the Fan” by Jeanie Shaw is not a light feathery book. The vignettes in this book have a humorous touch but carry a powerful impact for your life.
Reading this book is like taking a time release capsule in that it has benefits as you are reading it and after, when you think about it. The author uses everyday events and connects them to spiritual truths that create lasting pictures in your mind. As I read this I thought, “Oh, so that is what that would look like in my life,” and “That is something to consider for my children.”
Jeanie Shaw combines humor, vulnerability and truth that not only produces practical wisdom for life, but also helps us see God and His truth in our daily life.
